Mr. Alpert came to Portland Oregon in the mid 70s. He bought dinner for his band and a lot of other people at a restaurant near downtown. One waitress took care of them all night, and he went out of his way to make sure she was well treated, and then gave her the best tip she got ever at that job. She needed it. She was my mother, and we were scraping by. He didn't have to do that. Thank you Mr. Alpert.
She touched me too I never cry for any artists like she "chokes me up" Idk why.I cried when Dr.John(NOLA)died, however Karen I've been crying over her for years.I'm not ashamed she's the only artist outside of my family I cry for when I think about her no exaggeration

@@bradfordhammond8689 I LOVE HERB. What a wonderful and talented man. I grew up listening to the Carpenters and know the story of their rise to astounding success and the part that Herb played in it at his A& M record studio where I believe ALL of the Carpenters songs were recorded. It doesn't surprise me that he chokes up when thinking of Karen. She was so young and talented and it truly is a loss that so many were devastated by. Including myself. I was just listening to her today. Some days I can't listen. The voice of an angel. I miss you Karen.
Jeffrey Miller He cries because must feel some of blame due a frustated release of Karen's solo album. She stayed devastated, and she was very ill. If that recording had released, she would have cured and she still would be alive.
Jeffrey Miller Rick Henry: I ask every fan I interview about Karen's solo album. I feel it's one of the most important albums in the entire output of Carpenters/Carpenters related music. Had the album been released in 1980 do you think it would have changed the way people viewed Karen Carpenter? Randy Schmidt: I think it might have given her a bit more edge than she’d had in the past. I do NOT think it would have done anything to tarnish her image or reputation. RH: Do you think her solo album may have helped or hindered sales of subsequent Carpenters albums? RS: If anything it would have helped. By 1980, the Carpenters’ albums were not selling like they did even five years earlier. It would have surely garnered more attention and sales than Passage and Made in America. It would have at least had people talking. RH: Do you think the album would have changed Karen's course of life in anyway? If so how? RS: I have said this before, but I firmly believe that Karen’s whirlwind romance with Tom Burris was a rebound from the disappointment and eventual shelving of the solo album. Had she been releasing and promoting an album in the spring of 1980, she would not have had time to devote to that relationship. In that manner, I do feel it would have changed the course of her life in a very big way. Also, I wish she’d stood up to Richard and the folks at A&M. Herb Alpert never liked their A Kind of Hush album, but it wasn’t stopped. There wasn’t pressure to go back and redo everything. It was terribly crushing for Karen to have this album-her most personal, creative product ever-deemed unworthy of release. Her friends told me she never fully trusted Richard after that. Their relationship was damaged and you can sense the tension in the interviews they did together for Made in America. And as a record company exec at A&M, he gave so many other stellar artists their big break. He is a pebble that was dropped into the pond of modern music.
When Herb Alpert passes one day he will be remembered as a great man and musician who inspired so many others with his music and generosity. If the question is asked, was the world a better place because of his life, the answer would be an easy yes. As a trumpet player myself in the 1960's his music was such a joy to play and listen to. While in a rock band in 1969I got to play the wonderful song "A Taste of Honey" on stage and it meant so much to me with my admiration for Herb Alpert and at that moment understood the real joy of giving to others while performing. His music will be loved long after all of us are just memories. He is a true legend.
Got to meet Mr. Alpert & get his autograph when I was about 10 yrs. old (he & his band stayed @ my dad's motel after a gig). Nicest & most gracious man in the world! Bless you, Sir...I'll never forget how much you made me feel I mattered to you. Love your music, too!

Since I was a kid growing up in the 60s I listened to Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass, my parents used to play his music at parties and it was such a positive lively sound, playful fun music spectacularly played, what a treat. But now that I know a little about the man behind the music, I can see that it came from a kind loving soul who wanted to bring everybody joy. Herb is a truly a class act. It made me smile when I found out he didn't hesitate to give back by writing a half-million dollar check to keep that school open. If more multimillionaires would do things like this -- instead of just hoarding more money than they could possibly need in a lifetime -- this world would be a better place.

Well come on people. The Beatles were "vastly overrated"; "better"?. Whatever... They were not musicians of the caliber of ANY jazz musicians of the time, that is undeniably true, but if you look at their song writing and progression over the years and how they changed music, I don't think anyone can say they were overrated. That's like saying Michael Jordan was vastly overrated despite having won 6 world championships. The Beatles did at least one thing better than anybody ever, and that was to capture the world of music like no one ever had before or since and may never again. Maybe you liked other bands better than the Beatles, but to say someone is better is subjective. Fine, your opinion is yours and I will not argue that. But I liked both and I don't think liking the Beatles and HA&TB is mutually exclusive. I love them both. Herb Albert is still changing the world with his philanthropy and I say more power to him.
I learned so much watching this! Herb and his beautiful wife Lani Hall are awesome! Always loved her vocals on Fool on the Hill, and Herb is my man crush forever. Love you both!
i’m 63 and I grew up a middle class white kid that fell in love with the guitar but Herb’s music was incredible. I guess it didn’t hurt to have been raised in New Mexico but I ended up making a living as a rock guitar player for a short period of time and I still love to play and I was infatuated as a young teen by Lani with Brazil 66, she sounded so sexy....and I love Herb Alpert... I grew up with his music!

What a talented and GENEROUS soul!! My Dad had ALL of his albums--first on vinyl, then 8 track; cassette, cd....lol. Pretty handsome guy back in the day, too! LOL
Musician, composer, singer, bandleader, record producer/executive, painter, sculptor, philanthropist .... what a truly talented and fully fulfilled life this man is having. And he is still performing and touring at his age...what is he 70 odd? Best wishes to you man, keep on trucking.
I am glad to hear Herb Alpert has given back and I hope he starts an endowment so he can keep giving back after he dies. To Herb Alpert Thank you for letting grow up on your music Iam a big fan and now 38 years old and my dad introduced me to your music when I was a little boy and he had a bunch of your records.
Helped to deepen my love of music. Got to play backup for him, as a Sophmore in High School ('64), With about 1000 other HS band members at Kent State (OH) where He, Al Hurt and Doc Sevrenson played "Trumpeters Holiday". One of the great experiences of my young life. Thanks for the memory!!!
HE LOVED KAREN CARPENTER AS THE WORLD DID. I AGREE WITH HIM KAREN I THINK HAD NO IDEA HOW VERY TALENTED AND GOD GIVEN VOICE SHE HAD. WHEN KAREN SINGS ITS MAGICAL EVEN TO NTHIS DAY. HER MEMORIE WILL LIVE ON AND HER VOICE AND ALLM THEM WONDER FULL SONGS SHE AND RICHARD HAVE BROUGHT TO THE WORLD
imagine this...1971 Sunset/Vine I was in the tall building seeing a Dr...as I came down the elevator..I was anxious to get on the freeway and beat the traffic so I stood too close to the elevator door...as it opened...I was almost eye level to Herb's neck...I dam near fainted....HE'S GORGEOUS......oh my God...gorgeous
I grew up listening to my Dad play Herb's 8 Tracks and records, I listened to Lonely Bull thousands of times, I took up playing trumpet so I could learn to play along. Dad played guitar and I played trumpet to the records. Every time I play those songs they bring about the happiest feelings. Herb Alpert has brought so much to so many. A better world of music...a better world in general.
Herb Alpert was and still is one of my favorite musicians. I grew up listening to Herb and the Tijuana Brass and I still enjoy listening to his music. I have almost all of Herb's early albums. Herb Alpert is one of a kind. Keep up the good work,Herb!
What a wonderful man and musician. He'll always be my Trumpet Hero!! Thanks to him, many great new musicians will come from his generosity and love for music! Love you Herb!
What a life, well-lived. The estate is incredible. The artistic talent is amazing. His musical contributions are fantastic. And yet he still seems a very humble guy. I remember in the '70s thinking that the best-quality vinyl records I bought were always from A&M. They always has the best sound reproduction and they were the first I recall to provide a plastic liner for the record's paper sleeve. They cared about what their products sounded like.
I'd recommend "Mr A and Mr M: The Story of A&M Records" if you haven't already seen it. They delve into: the attention to artists needs and, the attention to artwork on album covers, etc. It was the "mom and pop store" run by people who had a passion. Looks to have been a cool place to have been a musician and/or other employee. Just the setting of Charlie Chaplin's old studio is cool vibes!
I started my pro radio DJ career in the fall of 1962 and "The Lonely Bull" came in at the same time so I've been a fan since he started. However I thank and salute Herb for the greatest gift he gave to my ears and my heart, signing Karen and Richard to A&M records. It was the perfect label for them and Herb gave them the support they needed. Thank you Herb, always!
Yeah, I just watched a documentary on Herb, and Richard Carpenter described Herb saying to him "Hope we have some hits" at the time when Herb signed them. That did work out, didn't it!
You should Google him up and see what they say he's worth...WHEW! That's okay. He more than earned it, coming from nothing in east LA. This is America and if there was ever a struggle story turned to gold, it's his.
I played Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on a 1951 Webcor portable record player (78/45/33 RPM!!!) until I wore out the records. This was before I found other music, of course, such as classical, renaissance, folkloric, folk, pop and so on. But "The Brass" never left me. I think that Alpert is one of my musical inspirations.
I have to say, I totally agree with you. Yes, making a living is essential, but most folks took pride in developing their craft though hard work and sacrifice. So, it was the hard work, sacrifice, and persistence to improve, that gave things meaning, not simply making money off it.
Herb and Lani seem to be enjoying an idyllic life, and they deserve it - all that talent they have shared with the world. I've seen them perform four times and they are elegant, exquisite.
It was because of Herb Alpert that most of my young male friends, as well as myself, took up the horn in grade school. I have heard his music from Lamu to Seoul and it never ceases to uplift and inspire and provide a touch of 'home." Only fitting that the trumpeter himself would be/ do so much so, as well. Sadly he ain't Mexican....I never knew...he looked as if he could have fought bulls!
My Legendary hero of music that my late parents raised me and my siblings with his music one of a kind Herb, keep the beautiful lovely music for more generations Amen.❤💜😘😘🙏🙏🎼🎤🎶🎵
Great piece on an amazing musician! Can't but get chocked up during the "Carpenters" portion...Karen fans can not help but the same "What if..." Its so great to see the respect he still has for here 40 years later...

@@carlosreyes5371 Exactly, somehow because he looked and performed so "Latin," I didn't find out he was Jewish till years later, a long time ago now. Of course the name should have tipped me off, but people give themselves weird show biz names.
Out of all the music that I listen to, and I listen to music from country to rock to jazz and everything in between, Herb Alpert is by far and away my favorite artist and always will be. in the 60s when I was growing up, I listened to Herb Alpert on the hi-fi because my parents were huge Herb Alpert fans. The best that ever was and ever will be Herb Alpert and the TJ B.
Herb probably cried because shortly before Karen died he ruthlessly shelved her last solo album effort and then charged her $400K in the early 80s to recoup the lost production cost. That must of hit her frail ego and health like a ton of bricks. "The album met with a tepid response from Richard and A&M executives in early 1980s and was shelved by A&M Records co-owner Herb Alpert, in spite of attempts by producer Quincy Jones to convince him to release the solo record after a remix. A&M subsequently charged Carpenter $400,000 to cover the cost of recording her unreleased album, to be paid out of the duo's future royalties."
Grande Herb Alpert!!! Adoro su musica❤ Route 101 y Quiereme tal como soy!! Invaden lo mas profundo de mi corazon!!! Y gracias a el, los carpenter's tambien lograron fama con su exquisito tema Close to you❤❤❤

When others were oohing and aaahing the Beatles, my favorites were the Tijuana Brass! :) Still love them 40 years later!
tjb better then the beatles of course.
The Beatles were vastly over rated.
Glenn Lego
when i say that to people that like the beatles they look at me like something is wrong with me haha
Thats true brother good comment.
Herb has it all - Looks, Talent, Style, Class & great lungs! "This girl's in love with you"
I learned so much watching this! Herb and his beautiful wife Lani Hall are awesome! Always loved her vocals on Fool on the Hill, and Herb is my man crush forever. Love you both!
Hats off to Herb Alpert
WOW!! If this doesn't motivate people to do what's right then what will.
Most morally satisfying to see a great artist succeed in every way.
If anyone deserved the good life, it's herb, the amount of joy he spread.
Thank you Herb Alpert. I was thrilled as a kid in junior high when I figured out how to play the lonely bull..😊
i’m 63 and I grew up a middle class white kid that fell in love with the guitar but Herb’s music was incredible.

LOL
Your Dad sounds pretty cool, too.
What a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing!
This nice guy finished 1st. What do you know...
Really well put by you.
Wow! He's been one of favorites for years. Quite a story.
Totally agree awesome story
Musician, composer, singer, bandleader, record producer/executive, painter,
sculptor, philanthropist .... what a truly talented and fully fulfilled life this man is having. And he is still performing and touring at his age...what is he 70 odd? Best wishes to you man, keep on trucking.
+Ryan Hill He is 80, now; DOB March 31, 1935. This video was done sometime in 2010.
+Ryan Hill 80
I dig this cat, always have.
One of my favorites!
Eric Purkey He has started an Endowment. He is just not one to talk about it.
HER MEMORIE WILL LIVE ON AND HER VOICE AND ALLM THEM WONDER FULL SONGS SHE AND RICHARD HAVE BROUGHT TO THE WORLD
No need to shout! She was a hell of a drummer, too. Somewhere on YT there's a video of her doing a drum solo. Look for it.
Yeah, I loved her, too. And it is very, very sad.
Thank you Mr. Alpert for giving us your music and treasure. The sounds of my life has your music playing in the background.
imagine this...1971 Sunset/Vine I was in the tall building seeing a Dr...as I came down the elevator..I was anxious to get on the freeway and beat the traffic so I stood too close to the elevator door...as it opened...I was almost eye level to Herb's neck...I dam near fainted....HE'S GORGEOUS......oh my God...gorgeous
Oh my gosh, I totally agree with you.
He signed Karen Carpenter! Wow!
Route 101 is my favorite tune. He is so so fine. Gifted man. I love him.
Awesome musician and artist, but even better than that - an awesome human being! Great coverage.
Awesome.
Herb Alpert was and still is one of my favorite musicians. I grew up listening to Herb and the Tijuana Brass and I still enjoy listening to his music. I have almost all of Herb's early albums. Herb Alpert is one of a kind. Keep up the good work,Herb!
Thank you Herb and Lani for supporting the arts! (stands up and applauds).
I like to see good people live the good life. Not many of us can.
Thank you so much for posting this. What a great man, and couple!
A LOVE STORY TO SEE . WHAT CLASS AND WEALTH SHOULD BE.
He's an amazing human being! Made me tear up when he choked talking about Karen Carpenter. What he's done for the Harlem School is wonderful.
Hello Herb!My Uncle~ Dub Edward's, worked at A&M RECORDS 25 YEARS!I was at the studio most of my childhood!
Wow, that's awesome. That seemed like a cool place to be.. good Charlie Chaplin vibes and good 60's/70's vibes!
Such a genius. It takes me back to the 80s
Term of Living legend is appropriate for him
You should Google him up and see what they say he's worth...WHEW!
I think that Alpert is one of my musical inspirations.
sad that in the 60s you had to play a guitar or trumpet to make millions while now there is kaitlin jenner or the karkrashians
Kartrashian is indeed trash.
I have to say, I totally agree with you. Yes, making a living is essential, but most folks took pride in developing their craft though hard work and sacrifice. So, it was the hard work, sacrifice, and persistence to improve, that gave things meaning, not simply making money off it.
glad I caught this spotlight on Herb Albert but there needs to be a new TJ Brass album!
Man. I always loved his music but now I can think so highly of him as a person too. What a great story.
Truly an awesome story about herb Albert ( special human being )
Love this guy like a brother
My Legendary hero of music that my late parents raised me and my siblings with his music one of a kind Herb, keep the beautiful lovely music for more generations Amen.❤💜😘😘🙏🙏🎼🎤🎶🎵
The Karen Carpenter part ❤️😭
He interacted with Sam Cooke back in the dsy
Great couple Lani has a beautiful voice as well
Great piece on an amazing musician! Can't but get chocked up during the "Carpenters" portion...Karen fans can not help but the same "What if..." Its so great to see the respect he still has for here 40 years later...

What song is playing at the end?
I like his music
Anybody notice his soft voice ?
Sexy soft voice. Yes I noticed. Lol
For decades, I thought Herb Alpert--even with that name--was Latino. Hee, hee
He is by default.lol
He is actually Jewish...
@@carlosreyes5371 . Call him a Jewish/Latino!lol
@@rockyracoon3233 He could be a Sephardic Jew, speaking Ladino...
Let’s keep paying it forward.
Amazing story!
Grande Herb Alpert!!! Adoro su musica❤ Route 101 y Quiereme tal como soy!! Invaden lo mas profundo de mi corazon!!! Y gracias a el, los carpenter's tambien lograron fama con su exquisito tema Close to you❤❤❤
It's pronounced "Tee-wah-na," not Tee-A-wahn-a"!
Even Herb has mispronounced it!
Dear allmusic1981's channel, thanks for posting this lovely video about Herb Alpert! I love his music. One question: can you please tell me the name of the beautiful theme played on your video at 0.22?
My daughter found it for me, it's "So What's New", thanks Maria João!
Why they didn't this documentary mention that Lani, Herbs wife was once the beautiful voice lead singer of Brazil 66.
Herb Alpert’s music is so fantastic and wonderful and he is a amazing musician
I would love to see him perform with Sergio Mendes.
That would be an amazing DUO 😎👍
They do of course here in You Tube Land....but yes...in person and both in concert...WOW
Just saw Herb and Lani Hall in concert. They still sound amazing!
How could you not love him.I have,since I was 8. :}
truly a very generous, talented man !
Can wait to she Herb Alpert at the Tucson Jazz festival. My trumpet hero for many years!
If Herb is living the good life, I helped out, first buying more than a dozen of his albums and later replacing them with CDs. It was money well spent. As I go through life, his music has provided the soundtrack of my mind.
I liked that way you phrased that, "the soundtrack of my mind".
