- Wong Kar-Wai's films have greatly influenced my life and the art I hope to produce in the future. This video essay expresses my thoughts on why I enjoy his films.

Thanks!
His(and Doyle's) grainy and highly saturated images evoke melancholy and nostalgia. His unorthodox, frantic and up close and personal camerawork has an intimacy with his characters you don't see in conventional filmmaking, combine this with his use of inner monologues, we grow sympathetic with his characters and the circumstances of their lives. An emotional connection is achieved, despite the lack of narrative in his films. No aspect of his art is compromised by normalcy; his films are a joy to watch because it is made by a person not afraid of his audience. If anyone can be called the modern day Godard, it is Wong Kar Wai. He is filmmaking's greatest living auteur.

Wong kar wai is probably my favorite director. When I saw fallen angels for the first time it changed me and became my favorite movie
When I think of great modern filmmakers I sure as hell think of Wong Kar Wai loooooong before Nolan comes to mind
Good for you
5 people come to my mind: wong kar wai, haneke, von trier, apichatpong weerasethakul and my favorite director ever paul thomas anderson
Who was Wong Kar Wai? Never heard of him. I know Leung Kar Wai Tony Leung.
@@peacebe2u480 Bruh Tony Leung's Chinese name is Leung Chiu Wai, and Wong Kar Wai is a director you donut.
You can think of both
he'll ALWAYS be my favorite! his film is just so creative. It feels very dreamy and surreal. I very much love it. It has the core of my soul.
This is a great essay. Covering broad themes and a lot of movies but going still a bit in depth. Hope to see more.
That was an awesome video! I am a life-long filmlover who has finally found Wang Kar Wai and he has blown me away. His films speak to me on a different level. Thanks for helping me to unearth why this true
I really appreciate the video and the effort that you put into making it. Subscribed!
Wong Kar Wai's mentor, Patrick Tam has influenced Wong Kar Wai's visual style quite a lot! You can see glimpses of it in films like Nomad and Love Massacre
Wang Kar Waï est mon préféré : la beauté de ses films me fait pleurer à chaque fois, de mélancolie ou de joie.
Merci pour votre travail de présentation.
❤❤❤
Thank you for the great essay that brought me back to Hong Kong where I used to live for over 15yrs.
Very well put together and most key aspects of WKW work were mentioned here. Well done!
i’ rather want wkw remain underrated cuz people now a days only use his style for content even though it doesnt even resemble like wkw,, His style is not always about colors but the symbolism, philosophy, and the story he tells,, i hate it that people would only credit him for his color,, i think his cinematographer should also he credited for the slow shutter things,, in the end wong kar wai for me is about the philosophy of loneliness and love.
Wan kar-wai make the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. I love how he interprets memories and time.
Great video essay !!
I am in love with Wong Kar-wai, was actually surprised how such a brilliant filmmaker still doesn't have mainstream popularity.
Similar to many other people who like Kar-wai, I discovered his films only due to taking some Film Theory Courses.
Lovely video! I love all of his movies!
I'm waiting impatiently for the release of Blossoms Shanghai
Great video! Love Wong Kar-Wai and am glad to see others enjoy his filmmaking.

Fallen Angels is one of my favorite films of all times, thank you for this essay (judging by the accent, I'm assuming you're a HKer too)
..Zhang Ziyi was a dancer once long before. N so,
Nowadays, I just love to fantasize & imagine of what Wong Kar-Wai could do & accomplish with: Mina Myoung, (my babymomma) Minny Park, & Yeji Kim. 💯
This was excellent. Really great stuff. What was the song that played during the credits?
"Dreams" original by The Cranberries, but here performed by Faye Wong (from the movie "Chungking Express)

Wong Kar-Why? No. Kar-Way Wong!
Why does nobody talk about my blueberry night when talking about Wong Kar Wai?
I haven't seen it yet but I am also troubled by this. Is it not good? Or people don't want to see non asians in his movies 😂
Fallen Angels killed me. Those were my people. I finally found my self. I held it in
a long embrace for far too long, not realizing you have to grow and move on.
you rlly put multiple ads in this video .... smh
This video essay is heavily lifted from, and even plagiarises, the essay on Wong Kar Wai by the British writer Ann Lee. Very disappointing to see you taking someone else’s work without any citations or recognition. The original video essay by Ann Lee can be found on the BFI UA-cam account. “BFI at home: The World of Wong Kar Wai”
