@@lexingtonbrython1897 Lincoln was not in frequent communication with Marx. There are more than 20,000 letters from Lincoln in the Library of Congress and they don't contain a single reference to Marx. @@lexingtonbrython1897 I've never been a member of the Republican Party, it has outlived its purpose, mainly because Lincoln didn't live long enough and was too embroiled in pragmatic solutions for the war effort to stem the tide of corruption that would take over the party after his death. And yes, the Republicans of the time did burn the South to the ground. My grandfather's grandfather was in the Union Army and burned the South to the ground. The point doesn't stand because there is no evidence that Lincoln was even aware of Marx or his writings, while the overwhelming evidence is that Lincoln was a Christian, a Classical Liberal and a free marketer. The Marxists were never allies of the abolitionist Republicans, they ended up murdering Union veterans like William McKinley. Marx never participated in electoral politics (he didn't really believe in it) but he was a kind of politician and did start a political movement so influential it caused more than 100 million murders. And as a politician, he took up causes to rally support for Marxism. But Marxism is not about freedom. Freedom to alienate one's own labor is an anathema to Marxism. Rather, it's an attempt to create a political and economic system which could apply the medieval ethics of economy to the industrial era. It's a very European ideology which is totally out of place in America. A generation before Marx, millions of European peasants had fought bravely in defense of their serfdom against the spread of the French Revolution. They preferred the security of a guaranteed income from an allotment of land to the peril of freedom. And historically, American Marxists have usually been either the children of the wealthy bourgeoisie or recent arrivals from Europe. Today's Marxists are totally out of touch with the working class. They are a product of an ossifying class structure, and support every policy which is driving the working class back into serfdom. Marx could not have predicted that the result of his doctrine would be that the bourgeoisie would rise against the workers. But, things are hanging on a much narrower thread than middle class people imagine. In the beginning of 2016, a prominent moving company in New York was hiring foremen for $10/hour. The only person who can afford such a low wage in New York, is a migrant worker who is living in an illegal tenement and sending the money abroad. Society is close to the brink of collapse. There will not be another civil war, that's just logistically impossible. One potential side doesn't even have its own water supply. But it's entirely possible that within our lifetimes, there will be a social revolution, and every person with a liberal arts degree might end up being killed as a class enemy and social parasite.
