I love the sound of Joplin’s Works on a piano roll. I want to buy a vinyl record featuring Joplin’s rags on piano rolls but it’s quite hard to find here in the UK, so this will do for know, thanks for a great video.
Haha, hope it helps out until you are able to locate you such a vinyl. :] Over here in the US, I know only but a few vinyls/albums that feature a bit of his piano rolls including the transcribed versions.
Of course! It's always fun to put stuff like this together, especially for the people who happen to tag along the ride like you. :] And hey, the fact you can play like Joplin in any regard is impressive. 😂 I can hardly play his MLR myself.
@@themajesticgeorge I have a lot in my YT jazz piano recordings collection etc etc already but yours helps give context. Just as the individual piano roll recordings become part of your collection, the totality of your collection becomes part of mine.
What a treasure of an upload!! Wow, this was incredible for you to put all of Joplin's own playing in one video for us ❤ I really like the honky-tonky feeling on these piano rolls 😎 Thank you thank you for this video!! 🤩I just wish we had a piano roll of Joplin playing each and every one of his own compositions. Also, Happy 2025!! 🥳
@@Natt_piano Hahaha, your all the welcome! 😆 It's incredible that we have record of his own playing by it's own right! 👀 A bit mind bogglin' for me to say the least, lol. They really do have that strong honky-tonk feel to them and it looks like even Joplin enjoyed playing around with variations and octaves himself. 😂 And yes, haopy 2025! ☃️✨ Looking forward to making this an excellent year. 😌
My introduction to ragtime beyond anachronistic approximations by Japanese composers (see: Mario music) was through Joplin's own MLR roll, and to this day I still think it's the best version of the piece. In this video it's a bit slower which makes it even better. Even in Joplin's early days as a composer there was a subtle melancholic quality in his pieces (MLR being no exception) that often gets lost in modern interpretations. Also in these recordings the piano is out of tune by about +.2 semitone which makes it a little more haunting if anything lol
@@angus7977 Yeah, I think many modern versions if MLR take out a lot of the original qualities that make the piece pretty unique in attempt to give it that "honky-tonk" style & etc. Also, I'm suprised you can hear the piano being out of tune. 🤣 Never gave it much thought until now. (Normally assume it's the rolls themeselves being out of wack in a few areas.)
Yeah I was joking, but of the recordings that exist of Joplin's rolls, these are on the slower end anyways... MLR specifically is perfect tempo here which most don't really get right at all besides Rifkin
Damn. Considering how he was suffering by 1916, you can really hear his deterioration on that second roll of Maple Leaf.

Thanks George for all the great work you do! On my best days, I play like Joplin. (in his syphillis years)

Legendary reccomendation pull
Thanks for the upload
Dang, it's barely been a day and it's already being recommended? 😭😂
Anywho, your welcome. Thank you for stoppin' by. :]
The Ole Miss Rag piano roll will never not be surreal. Scott Joplin playing 12-bar blues is a sound to behold.
@@GavinLepley Almost something unimaginable, haha. Fever dream material right there.

Too fast
@@JLack-dm1zz You think so? 🤔 They seem to be at a pretty moderate tempo I'd say.
No, just right if anything, you'd think the composer himself would know...
But he doesn’t control how fast the roll is played
