I am 38. I have stage fright. I love to play guitar and sing. I sing only by myself, except in karaoke whne I'm drunk. There was one instance where a dude asked if I was in a band. There are occasions when we go bars, that my head & friends telling me to take the stage, play guitar & sing songs, but I was scared shit lose. Now I see the courage and inspiration to do it this time. I don't care if I flunk, but I will take over the stage at some point. Thanks for sharing your talents and inspiration. Counting blue Cars will be the first song I will sing, when time comes. ;)
Words cannot acurately describe how truly beautiful JR's voice is, especially if you get to hear him singing live in a smaller, more intimate venue setting like this one. It's beyond moving.
USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) 2003 operating in the Mediterranean Sea in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) outbound; homeport, Norfolk, Va. evening of May 19. DISHWALLA plays a concert for us in Hanger Bay 2 and is exactly what we needed after a long cruise. They rocked it but J. R. Richards killed a cover of "Suspicious Minds" that Elvis would of loved! In fact I was getting a bottle of water from a cooler that was meant for the band and he was looking for a bottle before he went on and I played it off by handing him one. Sailors; you can't take e'm anywhere!

Just happened to be listening to Pet Your Friends while at work today. Got to googling for what's been going on since and stumbled on this. 8 years to the day. Very cool.
I was at his concert last night. I almost cried after I took a photo with him. I was kinda awake and dreaming. I was a huge Dishwalla fan. I was so sad they broke up
Wow! Most covers are ok, mainly just nostalgia for the original in my opinion. You have actually improved this already amazing song. Your singing is incredible!
My pleasure, JR. Looking forward to your best work, yet! It will not be easy to top past achievements but you can do it. It seems a lot of inspiration can be found in the silence.
Times flies. I became a Dishwalla fan in 2002, which is about 8 years later after their debut. Then they went on their surprise hiatus by 2005 & JR quit. This clip above is from 2010, which is now 13 years ago. JR does not have his black hair any more, some of it looks graying now, when he used to have flowing locks in the 1990's, then began a shaved head a decade ago. JR is actually starting to look like today's Curt Smith, of Tears for Fears fame.
@J.R. - A classic once in a lifetime experience! Absolutely hilarious! You and Jimmy Gnecco are the only vocalists I know of that can sing the phone book and make it sound great! You should check out his version of the Roy Orbison song, "Cryin". Please keep posting your cover versions. I like them better than the originals! 🖒
Makes me laugh the guy has an amazing voice, keeps it perfect all the way though, has one little blip and you see his confidence brake. It's not humor I say I laugh it's more rhetorical in the sense how we all feel about ourselves. John here is a fanatical singer, years of experience and can slip, powers on, and yet I see so many with potential that don't allow themselves to make mistakes. For me failing is not trying... Peace and love to all 🤗
I thought I was the only one to notice that. I understand that moment though because I'm a singer as well. I can tell that like myself, he is very critical of himself and some of thet is we feel very judged by people, mostly other musicians. Vocals are much more fragile than other instruments - like the bow of the violin - it can still be powerful, but we're always on the edge of straining as we live in the shadows of the greatest (Freddie Mercury, Sebastian Bach, etc) judging ourselves as well for not hitting the perfect note at the perfect time, but when you are performing you have to move forward and think about it after the song is complete. So you shake your head in disappointment for a very brief moment and move on to the next note.
Even post produced musics are not perfect nor computers and machines so there's no shame on it brother. Still his voice is ass kicking until now. #1 fan here. Dishwalla songs are my first to perform on a stage and makes me damn proud to sing their songs!
For the life of me....I cant understand how someone with SOO much talent....meaning.. he writes epic,he plays masterfully, and sings with an angelic voice...and hes relativity commercially unknown. Really Gosh Grobin is considered a great artist? the talents of Gosh are fleeting at best when next to J.R..... don't even get me started on something as shallow as the likes of a Bieber.
This is a really good version by the lead singer for Dishwalla as they were one of the best bands I listened to growing up, but I Prefer U2/Bono's voice more and the intruments with respect to both Bono and still to Dishwalla front singer ;)
Thanks so much for Posting :)
Oh ya? Why is that?
What a beautiful rendition JR!
You have an awesome voice. The first song I heard was Chasing Blue Cars. Listened to it over and over. Wonderful job on With or Without you
