- Cliff Eidelman's epic Overture (Title Theme) to Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country performed live on a Yamaha CVP809 Clavinova at Tom Lee Music Richmond.
I'd been wanting to do a Trek theme; Was working on TNG (very difficult on a keyboard for the arrangement to not sound cheesy, not to mention the multiple key changes!); and Discovery (turns out I need to find a way to play 3 parts on 2 hands), so this unique, one-off score was what I decided to try next... all the other Star Trek themes tend to be happier sounding. This one in particular can only be described as intense; I remember watching this in the theatres ('91?) and being glued to my seat during the opening titles because Eidelman's score was so pulse-pounding.
Couple of big mistakes (the bass run up at the end you can see I lost a beat and 'hiccuped') as well as 2 of the program changes wouldn't activate (about 1:17 in there's supposed to be a triangle on top of the melody, like in my Raiders Theme video) but alas. The 2 best takes; the internal audio recorder lost a second of sound data, thus impossible to sync with the video, and on one attempt, it cut off 30 seconds before the end: my phone was full!) Ah well, hopefully for the inevitable Genos/PSR version I put up.

LOVE IT! I wish there was more people playing the score to Undercovered Country as that is undoubtedly one of my favorite scores for a Star Trek movie. You did Darn well given it was just you on the piano/ synth. A few more layers to really add the complexity to what that score has and it would be absolutely perfect but I'm not doubting what you accomplished whatsoever!
Bravo!👏👍👌😁🖖
It had me sitting at attention in the theatre (each time; watched it 3 times in the theatres!)
I have a Genos arrangement ready to go; it's frustrating to me that this was the best take, because one of the registration changes (which included a glock to accent the high notes) didn't jump immediately as I was switching styles from the USB and registration as well, whilst simultaneously recording the audio to the same USB; so there was a long pause and I kept playing without any program changes for almost 10 seconds (I ended up having to skip over 3 program changes). I tried multiple takes but this still ended up the best.
On the Genos, with the built in SSD to record the simultaneous wav file, that won't happen.
Great job bro. Impressive. Thanks🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the kind words! I loved this theme since the moment I watched the opening credits of Star Trek VI in the theatre!
extraordinary
thank you for this succinct review!
wow. More blue ale for you!
Thanks, but be careful of that neutron energy surge the size of your head!
This is better than the original score. 👍😃
Well, that's simply not true, but I appreciate the sentiment! Wait til you hear the Genos 2 version!
WOW!!! Fantastic!!! This was a treat for a Trekker!
Trek really does bring the word together!
Absolutely excellent!!!! Thank you)))
*adds Bill & Ted's "Excellent "guitar riff*.
Thanks!
Awesome!!!!!!
Thank you!!
Awesome talent. Bravo!
Thanks! I still remember just being on the edge of my seat on the opening night of this movie because of Eidelman's intense score!
Like always, great performance!
Thanks!
Wow. Color me impressed. That was awesome. I saw this movie when I was in highschool. I loved every second of it back then and that soundtrack is definitely one of the reasons why. It just grabbed you right away. In retrospect I think the movie could have done without all the Scooby Doo whodunit stuff. It slowed the movie down. But they wanted to give each character something to do, I guess. I can respect that but there had to be other ways of giving each character some of the lime light.
thanks! This opening theme really captivated me from the moment the opening credits started to roll. They'd never done that before... make the opening credits exhilarating! Yeah, the pacing slowed down a lot after the assassination, but the soundtrack came to the rescue again at the finale
Interesting cover. This makes it sound like a mix style wise of George Oldziey and Cliff Eidelman. Like it :)
Don't know who George Oldziey is, but I'm going to check him out right now! I love Cliff Eidelman's score for ST6. I'm baffled why he hasn't been asked to do more sci fi scores.
@@MarkWilburnTLMApologies for the delay in replying. Is he still active?
@@treguard1982 Sorry I never got back to you! You're right, those 2 share a very similar sound, especially orchestrated:

The question becomes, did 1 influence the other? wing commander released a year before STVI, but it's also possible they learned from the same teachers?
Looks like he was active til 2018. Apparently, so was Eidelman! He scored something called Star Trek: The Final Darkness in 2004, and a whole bunch of rom-coms!
Ah, never mind, the FInal Darkness is just a fan film that uses his STVI score
@@MarkWilburnTLM Very possible! I can't say I've seen the final darkness before, b ut I'll definitely have a look. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you :) Did you ever have a chance to write this down on sheet music?
@@treguard1982 alas, I don't do sheet music... I neither read nor write it.
A fantastically good performance.
I am impressed with your skills.

Thanks so much!
Great! When I saw the movie on its theatrical release, the overture did its job: it got me in my seat and paying attention. I just wish the movie had lived up to the musical score. Anyway, congratulations to Cliff for his composing, and to Mark for this performance!!
Right? I was on the edge of my seat right at the start due to the incredible score; I still really enjoyed the film, but admit its pacing slowed way down immediately after the opening until about 2/3 through, when it picked up again.
@@MarkWilburnTLM Yes. By the way, just to be clear, I am an original trekkie from 1966, and I love classic trek. This movie has several memorable scenes, and I especially like the exchanges between Kirk and Spock.
@@dandeliondown7920 I was there opening night; the "Only Nixon", "Guess who's coming to dinner", and "...lifelong dream" elicited roars of laughter. That is still one of my favourite Trek films (WOK being #1, TUC and FC being essentially tied for 2nd) but other than the opening, the dinner scene/1st encounter, and the insane crescendo of the finale, the rest of the plot pacing was admittedly somewhat mellow.
What did you not enjoy about the movie?
@@thewinner7382 Hello. I don't know if you are asking me or Mark or both of us, so I'll just give a brief answer for now. I did not like the story. The writers (Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flynn) stated that they were heavily influenced by the news of the day: namely, the coup d'état attempt against Gorbachev in the Soviet Union in 1991, and also a popular theory at the time about "the end of history" ("the end-point of humanity's sociocultural evolution and the final form of human government"). I see both of those things as being deeply specific to the era. Therefore, for me, the story seems small and local, rather than universal and timeless.
HOWEVER, I own the dvd and I still watch the movie once in a while. It is well made, and it has MANY good scenes and qualities.
Live long and prosper.
