Nothing is in front of him technically if he is on the street. Just more street is in front of him if he is walking straight down the road. The businesses and buildings are always on the left and right side of a street. That's how we think about directions in English. Very literal.

Why do you sometimes say "go up" and sometimes "go down". When should I say " up" and when "down"?
It really does not matter! You can say either one for any context and it's correct!
