How to ask for and give directions in English

- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- Learn the language used to ask for and give directions, whether you’re walking or driving. Are you planning to visit a foreign city? What will you do if you get lost there? You will likely have to ask someone for directions back to your hotel or to the attraction you were planning to visit. They’re probably going to answer speaking quickly, using specific words and terms, so you better know what to expect. Even if you’re not visiting an English-speaking country, as a tourist you will very often be communicating in English! In this class, I’ll teach you how to use terms such as: "next to", "not far from", "kitty corner", "across the street from", "fastest way to get to", "head to", "eastward", and many more. Take the quiz on this lesson here: www.engvid.com/how-to-ask-giv...

Love your classes, Adam! 😍
In Brazil, before asking for directions, you have to say "Hi! Excuse me. Good morning/afternoon/evening. Sorry to interrupt (whatever you're doing). Can you tell me...?" The most important is "good morning/afternoon/evening" before anything. Hahaha! I hate this. Nobody is wishing you any good part of the day. it's just a formula to show how polite you are. Of course there are exceptions to everything. Great lesson. You said it's for beginners, but sometimes we're so focused on advanced vocab and skip very useful information. Thank you! (Watching at 2x)
Polite people do the same obviously .
@@stevejaenghan5589 I wouldn't say polite, but formal.
@@silviomp as an English teacher in Thailand there are formal ways of speaking in our language and informal . My mother being Thai , I was raised speaking Thai and English .
Every society has it's tweeks . Yes , we are very formal here in Thailand . All of my students 7 - 40 years of age will bow to me at the beginning and end of class .
@@stevejaenghan5589 Yeah, it's like a religion. If you don't do it, you might be "stoned." Human beings love formality, it makes them feel better, and they will do it even if they don't like you because it's not about being genuinely nice, but following the rules.
Sorry, Silvio... But you don't need to sound bitter when telling that in Brazil greetings( good morning, etc) are a mechanic talk. Maybe you only had met people in a hurry or bad mood. We usually are friendly. Have you forgotten that?
