Born in 1937, the Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov may be counted alongside his contemporaries Arvo Pärt and Giya Kancheli as among the most profoundly spiritual composers from the Soviet republics. Silvestrov, however, distinguishes himself from those contemporaries by the sharpness of his ears and the freshness of his thinking.
Silvestrov’s Fifth Symphony achieved a cult status among dissident Soviets and then in the West through the gradual dissemination of a recording made in 1976. The loving adieus of his later music have come about through an immersion in the Western avant-garde, with Webern as the fountain-head, that unlike Pärt he has not so much disowned as refined. This is music perpetually on the threshold of saying goodbye, wholly in love with the Viennese classics and yet regretfully aware that their world is irrecoverable.

One of my favourite composers; his music always sounds to me elusive, like someone in a distant room playing, but you can never work out where. Something nostalgic for a remote past, at times unbearably moving.
First time I heard this composer and I had a similar feeling: something like a good dream that I remember little.

I first about this Post-soviet union era composer on the Now-defunct Soviet composers website. born during a time when Shostakovich was the main leader at the time and then Alfred Schnittke would later succeed him.

Слушаю Сильвестрова с 2006 или 2007 года, когда сначала узнал о его существовании из фильмов Муратовой, а потом, скачивая рандомно музыку, наткнулся на Bagatellen und Serenaden 2005 года, который, наверное, остаётся моим любимым академическим диском. Так что знаем и слушаем :)
А, да, я его ещё и вживую видел в 2009 году в московской консерватории, он приезжал :))

However, the term "post-soviet" is now inappropriate and offensive. Silvestrov is Ukrainian and his country is fighting for independence.
