- Our digital Doors Open Days continue with a trip to the Scottish Borders where we’ll be looking at four medieval abbeys and monasteries.
The magnificent ruins of Melrose, Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh are in close proximity. All were founded in the 12th century and we’ll be exploring this snapshot in time during our livestream Q&A event.
Excellent video very informative and knowledgeable speakers. Really whetted the appetite.
Sorry I missed the live stream but the conversation and information was well done and informative.
Was Thomas the Rhymer a real person or a mythological character? I am still fascinated by tales of underground tunnels re the relationship between Thomas and the Earl of Dunbar.
Thank you all for this tour. Am rethinking rebuilding as opposed to conservation. Conservation wins.
Reivers and towers
I also missed the live stream. Am interested in the close to water aspect. I read somewhere that 'ford' in Scotland was linked to where an abbey would be situated. Am I going further back in time re this question?
May we see Sir Walter Scott's resting place at Drysford Abbey?
Hi Martha, you can find some images of his tomb in the HES Archives: canmore.org.uk/search/image?SIMPLE_KEYWORD=%22walter%20scott%22%20dryburgh
Wow love this question re restoration. Had a great visit to Smailholm Tower. And know there is a history of attempting to restore the tower at Earlston. Have read a trilogy by Elizabeth ? re Thomas the Rhymer. I could be well off the mark here re connections to abbeys in the Borders. In my limited experience and sporadic knowledge I just can't help but think there has to be a connection between towers and abbeys. Maybe the wrong forum here and maybe venturing into the realm of mythology but apart from the 'ford' connection to establishing an abbey the relationship to Thomas the Rhymer and the Earl of Dunbar and secret tunnels fascinates me.
Am I posting today's 06/20 question in the correct place ?
Hi Martha, this livestream took place last year, but we'll pass your question onto our experts and hope to come back to you soon! :)
But can't help myself - surely Rhymers Tower would be better in hands of Historic Scotland.
