  • STOP Doing This to Your PC
For many years I have seen buzz words like pc performance boost and speed up your pc used in a lot of articles and videos. A lot of this information is old hat and not even worth doing in 2021. things like registry cleaners, defrag, registry tweaks, virtual memory and loads more are not really needed in 2021 and people need to stop.

Virtual memory tweaks haven't been relevant since Windows XP ..... Plus back then you had much smaller hard drives so you tried to save every MB you could ..... I see a lot of people have problems with AAA games because they try to set virtual memory to too small of a fixed size and then wonder why the game crashes after an hour or so of playing ..... Windows memory management has been really pretty good since Windows 7 or even Vista after the 1st Service Pack (Remember those?)

That virtual memory tweak only really was necessary on mechanical hard drives to lessen fragmentation and the inevitable slow down of operations due to increase seek times. On slower processors it also sped Windows up a little due to the fact that the CPU didn't need to calculate and recalculate the size of the paging file.
SSDs don't suffer in the same way and even larger mechanical hard drives should be less prone to fragmentation due to greater free space and memory compression algorithms.
The only tip I'd offer is to keep an SSD operating more quickly do not fill it to near capacity with data. I'd suggest no more than 3/4 of the drive space should be in use and certainly no more than 80%. SSDs do tend to slow down the more full they get.

In Microsoft Support they did not have a clue when I talked to them few times during these 2 years and insisted either to fix their updates or to stop updating me. I found the solution on a forum. At the forum they said they actually made a lot of effort trying to report Microsoft about this widely spread problem, but Microsoft neither fixed nor even let know their support employees about reason for this particular update failure, with wide range of Asus 9-years old desktops affected.

wrt the page file there is a reason to tweak it. if you have an ssd and a lot of ram and you dont want your ssds to get thrashed with a lot of high frequency reads/writes that wears down the memory cells. computers are always adding layers to storage/memory and the lines are really starting to blur, like optane for example. ive even seen ssds in a ddr package in datacenters.
whats funny is when people defrag their ssds. fragmented is how they operate (wear level always copying cells so even if windows moves them the ssd will just move them again).

The only case where messing with the page file is advisable, is when you have multiple physical hard drives, NOT partitions on the same drive. You may want to distribute it over the various drives. Also, with mechanical drives, increasing the minimum size of the page file can reduce it's fragmentation, but only because more of it is allocated but, most of the time, not used.

While you are right that the BIOS flashing has gotten better, I will highly recommend doing your research first. Everything needs to line up. That means:
    1. The motherboard needs to be the right revision (I can attest to this one personally as I have an old revision 1 ASUS Sabertooth 990fx motherboard. There are other updates for later versions of that board PCB, but only a few for mine, so it's as up to date as I can get it. Still an excellent board though with my 8150 FX Black Edition, as it still runs a pile of new stuff just fine).
    2. The update must be for your actual motherboard (obvious, but sometimes what is being claimed is not always the case).
    3. Make sure your board will handle what you have now. This extremely important for some updates even now as there are some boards I have seen where you need an older CPU to allow the board to fire up long enough for you to get the new BIOS installed, then you can swap to the new one you want to use. Yes, there are some dual BIOS boards that can avoid this issue and some where you can flash the board without firing it up, but these are the more expensive boards. You do get what you pay for.
Pro Tip: Read your motherboard manual. It will tell you all kinds of things about your board and the various companies do update them often, so do go to the official manufacturer of your board for this information. It will save you a lot of issues.
P.S.: If you're one of those graphics card BIOS flashers out there these tips apply to you too, after all who wants to turn a several hundred dollar graphics card into a paperweight.

I agree 100% with everything you just said... The ONLY thing I do these days is remove bad or "Frozen" App settings from the Registry. Every now and then I get issues either with my PC or Clients PC's where Programs don't run properly or refuse to uninstall or reinstall freshly. Most Companies do the usual... "Did you switch it of and on again", "Try clearing your Cache", "Uninstall and reinstall", and my ultimate pet peeve which absolutely grinds my T!ts is... "You'll have to Backup and reinstall Windows"...
I haven't reinstalled windows since Windows 7. I lose instant respect when an IT company says this.
A quick recent story. I had a client call me about 2 weeks ago. I'm usually the person she calls (for the past 2 years) to sort her PC out or help with general advice etc. Anyway she had a problem with her network printer that refused to print from one of her home office PCs. This issue started about 3 months ago. For some reason she opted to call some other IT guy (not me) who was unable to help, she then called the ACTUAL Branded Printer company who tried to help her numerous times and eventually said that her drivers were corrupt and advised all the usual cr@p, with the final result being to reinstall windows as they could not help her. Well, one last chance, she decided to call me... I did the general peaking around and did the usual uninstall, reinstall, update, dated back. installed the original drivers, etc, etc... So I eventually resorted to my personal Last option before reinstalling windows. I Backed Up the Registry and removed every reference there was related to the Printer, It's Software and Drivers from the Registry. Rebooted, Reinstalled the Printer and Bingo... All this within about 2 hours, when another Computer company and the Official Printer company couldn't help for 3 months.
I had the same issue with my GOG Games app... It refused to log me in and they could help and advised the same... I did the same thing removed everything from the registry and all good.

If you run a registry cleaner, sometimes it ends up cleaning up maybe 50 invalid keys. When you compare it to the millions of remaining keys, it's actually a very tiny modification you made to the registry. Even if the registry would consume 100% cpu power, removing 50 keys out of say 1 million keys, that's only a 0.005% boost you'll get. You have a far better performance boost by disabling stuff in the startup that you don't really need. Defragging on an SSD is kinda useless as it can switch to a different address at the same speed as just keep reading address after address like normal reading. On a HDD it's a different story, but only when you have files that are fragmented into ALOT of pieces. Reading a 200Mb file which has only 2 or 3 fragments isn't a big deal, but if you have the same file that's split up over 3000 fragments, that's 3000 head-movements, which all take a few milliseconds to execute and can slow down reading that file. It all depends how many fragments there are and how far the head needs to move to find each fragment. Of course the biggest slowdown would be where the head needs to move from center of the disc to the outer edge of the disc for every fragment. Unless that's the case, you may not find big improvements for defragging.

In my experience lately disk fragmentation is still an issue with windows 10 on mechanical drives. On all of the installations I have done over the last year to mechanical drives, windows has been very sluggish until I defragmented the drive, which always has been extremely fragmented right from the get go. I defragment the drive, Windows wakes up and it's fine for a long time. I almost feel like Windows 10 is not optimised for mechanical drives.

I've used Windows without swap file for many years. I believe that were Win 7 and Win 10, but maybe Win XP as well. No issue with that. So, when making a suggestion, at least give some reason why that suggestion is worth listening to.
Yes, you can run out of memory if your total memory size (real + virtual) is overflown by programs. If you're not ready to deal with that, then let system expand that swap file whenever needed. Other than that, no real problem to live without swap, despite many scary stories over internets.
Why would you want to disable or set your swap size manually? Here are my reasons:
    1. Even if your system has 128 Gigs of ram, Windows will still write some data to the swap. That means (a) slowing down if that swap happens to be on HDD, or (b) killing SSD resources unneccesary.
    2. Suppose you have a program that may occasionally demand large amounts of RAM. Say, if you try to resize big image in Photoshop, and instead of 200% you type 2000%, you'll get huge memory demand. What will happen? Windows will try to satisfy that demand by allocating huge swap file. Be that on HDD, you'll get an unresponsive system, that for minutes tries to do something untill fails. If you're on SSD, you'll get Gigabytes of unneccesary writes. And remember. SSD can get really slow if you write to it too much in very short time. So unresponsive system for minutes is still an option. And if you don't have a swap at all? Photoshop just gets denied to allocate that amount of ram and shows you error message about insufficient ram.
In any case, you'd better set swap to a reasonable limited size or disable at all.
    3. Windows may be not so smart. It may increase swap up to the size that it takes the whole disk size. If that disk is a system one, you could get an unstable system. If that is another drive, other bad things may happen. Imagine you're working on a big image in Photoshop (yes, again!). After many operations and a half an hour of work, you notice that windows happens to occupy all drive space that you expected to save your file to. Now, you have your work done, but you can not save it, because that "convenient" windows feature of automatic swap growth.
    4. If you have more than one drive, you probably have an HDD that is used for storage. If you use it rarely, It may even sleep most of the time, thus reducing noise, power usage, and mechanical wear. But if Windows desides to put Swap on it, that HDD will be doomed to spit all the time.
There are reasons why you'd want to have swap, but who cares?

Another thing you shouldn't update every month is your graphics drivers ..... You should only update if it has a bug fix for a game you have or you bought a newly released game that needs new drivers ..... For instance I haven't upgraded my Nvidia 2080 Super's drivers since the Game Ready drivers for Cyberpunk 2077 came out .... and once every 6-12 months, depending on how often you upgrade them, you should run a programs like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in the Safe Mode .... Also it helps to run DDU if you have to downgrade because the latest driver version breaks one of your games .... There is a case where cleaning out the registry actual is necessary because if you update the graphics drivers every month sooner or later you are going to have conflicting Registry entries and CTD problems in many games .....

    1. Windows defrag will not defrag the operating system files if they are installed on a traditional HDD while in use (i.e. while Windows is running). That means if Windows fragments them (moves pieces of them around over time) eventually those files will slow things down, like if you installed on an older system. Therefore the inbuilt defrag is junk. You need a defrag that can run on startup BEFORE Windows loads to address the above mentioned issues. I run such a program on an older laptop that has only a HDD ( because there is no SSD available for that model).
    2. Some registry cleaners also have their place when used correctly. Some programs leave junk behind when you use their provided uninstallers. Also, I have found that even the "wonderful" Windows 10 leaves junk in the registry from big things all the way to as simple as things like deleted shortcuts. These all add up and will eventually bog down a system if left to fester unchecked. Wait, Maybe that's why Microsoft once stated that it's best to "back-up everything regularly and do a FULL re-install every 6-12 months." It was probably because they knew how troubled their stuff was back then and CHOSE TO IGNORE THE PROBLEM.
These are just the Ideas that come to mind right away.
This is all common sense, Brian; something Microsoft seems to be lacking lately. I ask you this, Brian: Are you considering these things or just skipping over them? Are you assuming that if people can afford a computer then they should automatically have a top end computer with no issues? It just seems like some of these things are being glossed over or completely ignored. Maybe I'm just ranting but I hope I've made my point.

    Hi,
So what do you recommend people do when their systems start to slow down, and crawl along?
I have been using Auslogic’s Boostspeed for years now, and it definitely makes a difference to the speed of my PCs. My main machine is a 10th gen core i7, with 32 GB, running Windows 10. I use it for a variety of things, but mainly gaming, 3D printing design, and internet.
I do notice the machine running slow when gaming online, or when using programs which push the GPU when designing 3D models. When I use registry cleaner, and disk defrag, my system performance is restored to best performance, so there is no argument from me that these programs do work.
I also use the internet optimiser on first run, and whenever I update my modem/ router. This always boosts the upload and download speeds achieved. I would not have a clue as to how to go about tweaking this, without this program.
And finally, I run the free, full version of Auslogics backup program. I decided to install this as, for the life of me, I could not figure out how to backup my hard drives with Win 10 software. Without it, I would have no fast way to backup my files. I have had several hard drive failures over the years, so make sure my drives are always backed up with recent changes.
    Cheers,

your advice is usually pretty solid, but for myself I always prefer to use an adequately sized fixed size swapfile, to do this I use several perfmon counters to discover this over a period of time I pick the highest determined values and allow an extra 40% headroom for increased memory demands due to future patches or changes in the software or working patterns - I must be doing something right because this machine is over 6 years old (z97/ i7 4790k, ) and I havent had to do a bare metal install in 4 years on it, and its still nippy enough to run 3 1080p screens to play Elite Dangerous in surround on it smoothly despite the pcie m2 'system' drive pinching lanes - and so this means I can pretty much forget about it and not touch it again as in my experience leaving it set to auto will end up with the swapfile in a non contiguous state, with its performance issues - as I use a strict separation of data rule, keeping the OS , Apps & Data & %userprofile% on separate spindles as much as I can or on separate partitions on my laptops (apps that sneak into the Appdata folder are a particular hate of mine) I've never had to use a disk defragmenter or have the need of housekeeping Daemons, services or TSR's running in the background since windows NT 4.0 came out - being an old timer that believes that 'form follows function' should be first I dont like the shiney bells and whistles that annoy and get in the way of everything - for me old habits die hard -

C cleaner was one of them in the beginning but the product was sold to a new owner and the rumour was it got.. eh.. corrupt.
I have been playing around in the registry sins the 90's to get rid of old things from bad uninstallers and of course testing tweaks or turning off things I couldn’t find in windows own gui. But I truly recommend people to NOT fiddle around in the registry if you don’t know what you do!.
I have tested Glary Utilities and it seems pretty harmless, but as always, DON'T over do things as it can remove things that windows put ex empty keys etc in the registry as a solution to prevent programs from writing data into the wrong place in the registry and corrupt things.

    Finally uncovering the truth...
I never actually followed any of these methods just because I knew they were (and are) ineffective. Cleaners, such as CCleaner or Avast Cleanup Premium just do things that you can also do, but automatically. There's a built-in program in Windows, the Disk Cleaner, which, you guessed it, cleans your disk. So why installing an external program? Also, if you guys didn't know, you don't need any external antivirus anymore. Windows Defender's not how it was in Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8. It just works now; you can test it if you don't believe me. I go pretty often on... let's just say non-trustworthy sites, and download lots of potentially malicious files, but Windows Defender never failed me (of course I try to unzip and run the downloaded files in a Win 10 VM, but even there a message from Win Defender pops up). So STOP following how-to-speed-up-your-pc videos, as they're outdated and useless. Aside from disabling some startup programs or stopping some services, there's not much you can do. That's just how it is.

    • @supdan
      @supdan 3 роки тому +1

@TTgamer OP Uhhhh who said it harms your PC? I just said that it's useless. Yeah, maybe if you're not a power user it could be handy, but if you are then there's no point in installing it. You can just do what it does manually.

    • @supdan
      @supdan 3 роки тому +1

@TTgamer OP Good answer, but to that I respond that cleaning the registry does not affect your computer speed at all. And yes, you can clean it from all the unused keys and values of uninstalled programs manually pretty easily. As I said, it's up to you. If you want to have some extra programs on you PC then install it but I just prefer having less things possible, especially if they're 3rd-party.

    • @supdan
      @supdan 3 роки тому +2

@TTgamer OP This is starting to become interesting! Here's my reply, then:
The fact that you noticed some increase in performance is due to the fact that CCleaner actually does something, of course, I don't doubt that, but I meant that all what it does is easily doable without it. So, of course it increases the speed of your PC, but just because it does automatically what you can do manually. "So isn't it simpler to just let the program do all the work?", you'll ask. Well, yes it is, but the fact that it's third-party is alone one of the main problems with it: you can't exactly know what it does to your PC. Not saying that it's SURELY malicious, or that's malicious at all, of course (it's CCleaner, come on...), but you can't be 100% sure. The other main problem with it is that... it's a program. Another program to add to a presumably infinite list of others you already installed. Isn't it better to have less 3rd-party stuff as possible?
Now for the updates. You said that updates really used to break Windows, and I can't argue on that - just thinking about version 2004 brings back so many bad memories - but you can't do anything about those. You just gotta install 'em, boi. With CCleaner, or any other program of course, the choice is yours, and my choice is not to install it. For me at least, it's not useful at all, for the reasons I gave you. If you don't know how to clean files manually, or you just don't want to do it every time manually, then it's the perfect program for you. Just know that it subtracts space from your hard drive, adds some processes in the background and it's not officially approved by Microsoft. If you have a powerful computer, it won't make any difference. It just adds himself to the list of programs you have.
This discussion is getting really interesting tho, hope to see another reply from you! Peace!

Again, my challenge was to try it out for yourself and its a fun exercise even for linux. There are still many possible solutions.

@@peregrinesantos7483 On my main systems I run PopOS, which isn't lean but is a pretty smooth experience. For a lean system, I either use Lubuntu or something similar. I've also found that if I install a bare bones Gnome on Ubuntu server, I can keep it under a gig (760mb) at idle.

Hi. I'm not good with PCs so I thought I'd watch this to avoid making any mistakes. 1 problem I've got which I hope you might be able to help with is that, I can no longer drag and drop files from my pc to my phone. Any idea why or how to fix it?👍🏼✌🏼

Well, I have been working on computers for over 20 years and I can say a good registry cleaner, makes a real difference to the performance of a PC that hasn't been cleaned for a while. People would say to me, my computer is so slow, I can make a cup of coffee faster than it can open a screen. Run a good cleaner like AVG or Avast and wow what a difference. The screen opens immediately, so no, I don't agree with you. However, some cleaners are treacherous and can do more damage than good. But it's like saying no one needs to defragment their drive, HDD, and that is sheer nonsense.

Like the Vids Brian ( Thank You ) Paging file is only worth adding from say 2048 on Win 10 if running old machine with 4gb - 6gb of RAM and with HDD ....BUT if Using a SSD ( Variable capacity ) paging files do over work the SSD ( Scrubbing ) for No real reason .... The ratio on Calculation is 1.4 Page file Too RAM Size .. Let Windows Calculate .... Got to say Regarding the Windows 10 Optimize Vid ..You Didn't reply to my reply to about Taskbar Icons Going AWOL after Slapping and WAS it a VM You were Using ??? BUT all in All Great Vids which are Appreciated By Me .... ( Can only Speak for Myself ) Be Safe and Thanks For Great Content Sir

Need ~ 4GB or more, virtual memory per card on mining rigs. I have one set to 60GB virtual memory. Most rigs have 6 cards. I think it helps the DAG file too.

I think some people believe that gain so much from registry performance tweaks. Your notice a lot of these channels doing these videos, never show a before and after.
