    As some folks have said, no need to take the junction box thing out but the OP had his reasons for doing so. But to just take the BCM, take off those two big-ass plugs at the bottom, just squeeze the tabs, no nut or bolt. Then, the 3 screws that are facing you that require a 10mm socket, remove those. Then, as he shows in the video, the 2 screws with the 8mm head, and then the one on the other side at the top. You'll need some extensions for that one and a flashlight but keep looking for it, it's there. Thank you OP for a great video, couldn't have done it without you.

    Thanks for the helpful video. I just completed this task on a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. I bought used BCM on Ebay but kept the fuse/relay panel. I made the mistake of disconnecing the face plugs. As noted in the previous comments, this is unnecessary. Anyway, a tip for getting them back on: install them and the plugs on the bottom before installing the assembly.

    My problem is radiator fans don't go on?? 1998 Plymouth Voyager, so far replaced coolant fan relay, checked power goes in there, there is connectivity from relay control harness, into pin #73, going in PCM, checked that, there is ground going into relay, replaced both fans ( for nothing), they work, when connect power and fan ground, replaced temperature sensor, everything else work..., but there seems to be NO command from PCM to turn fans on. When running car warm, or turn AC on, which works, fans just don't go on?? Bad PCM?? How do you test that?? Thanks for helping me, I want to test PCM, before I replace that, if I can !!! Thanks=)...Ps. also cleaned and checked grounds, G103.....

    Great video. Thank you. I am likely going to have to do this for my nieces 1998 grand caravan. do you know of any "learn" routine the BCM has to do to sync up with the ECU or any sort of re-programming that needs to be done? Also, is the vehicles mileage stored in the BCM or the ECU? All my past experience is with ECU. But never had a car with a stupid BCM to go bad. Just wondering if the mileage on the odometer is going to read differently. Thanks again.

    I think I may have a BCM faulty unit also as I have two problems one is minor in nature the other is CRITICAL.
    - - -THE MINOR PROBLEM - - -
    The minor problem deals with the overhead trip computer display. In one of the selections you will see dual display of MPGs. - - - Under normal conditions the left display shows AVG MPG, the right display shows INSTANTANEOUS MPGs, the next step shows INSTANTANEOUS MPGs by itself. - - - Now the problem, in the dual display step, the AVG MPGs display is blank but, has moved the display to the right into the INSTANTANEOUS MPGs position. Further, the next step displays INSTANTANEOUS MPGs is correctly displayed by itself. I changed out the display module to no avail the problem continues.
    - - - THE CRITICAL PROBLEM - - -
    The critical problem deals with "Daytime Running Lights (DRL) / Hazard - Turn Signals" integrated module, about $100 for this bit of technology. - - - Under normal conditions when the Light selector on the dash is set to the "Automatic" position, the DRLs work when the vehicle is in motion the head lights are on and if at night the head lights and other outside lights switch on. The Hazard - Turn Signals work by pressing the "HAZARD" button all turn signal light flash together. The turn signal works by moving the signal lever up for right turn and down for left turn. - - - Now the problem, intermittently the Hazard / Turn sSignals do not work. Checking fuses under the hood at the power distribution block indicate all fuses good. Some video postings suggest removing the DRL/Flasher module opening it up and re-soldering the solder joints to correct for possible cold solder joints during production. Based on this video and others I suspect a defective BCM. I'll keep you posted.

      there are videos on how to repair a defective BCM the same way by resoldering the solder joints. I had to resolder my dashboard instrument cluster because of cracked solder joints and it solved an intermittant instrument cluster. At least give the soldering fix a try before buying a new one

      Not hard to find. Check eBay, or your local auto salvage yard. These vans were made by the hundreds of thousands. Still plenty of them in junkyards. Buy two or three bcms and one will work for sure. You don’t need the whole fuse block like I did, but it doesn’t cost any additional if you pull it yourself at the junkyard.

    At 0:48, the 4 nuts holding down the electrical connectors, I'm finding the 11mm too large and the 10mm to small. Is this a 10.5mm (or dog forbid a 13/32 inch)? I've reached an impasse. It seems I will have to special order a very rare tool. Am I missing something?

      I keep coming accross many mechanics saying its a bad ground
      Bad and intermittant grounds can cause havoc with all kinds of weird results. Think about it...all that salt they put on the roads in winter is going to eat away at ground points, corrode them and cause high resistance which are located at the lowest point of the vehicle.

    I just replaced my Gauge cluster with another one from a Pick a Part. I originally had the dead gauge syndrome & banging my dash brought it back to life until one time it went dead permanently. I did try the soldering repair thing on the main connector to the circuit board, but that didn't last too long. All is good now except for one thing... since I bought the van 3 or so years ago, the gauge lights have always been out. I've checked wires for continuity, bulbs and fuses. All are good. Could it be the BCM is afu & needs to be replaced?

    • @rogerd4559
      @rogerd4559 5 років тому

      sometimes when mechanics replace things like the battery or alternator, they dont disconnect the negative terminal first. according to my repair manual you should alway do that to avoid shocking the delicate computer electronics in your car
      It might be ok once or twice but it could have been the last straw that broke the BCM's back. have your mechanic swap out the Body Control Module and see if that helps

    I had some trouble with the face connectors. 3 of the 4 backed out as they should but the upper left would not come out on it's own even after the nut was completely loose. I had to carefully use a screwdriver to pry it slightly loose. Then it came out. Same troublr getting it back in. Took forever for the nut to engage the bolt. Those are all back in and now I have another problem. On my fuse panel the front connectors were all color coded so I didn't need to label them. However, the two bottom plugs looked as though they were only able to go one place each due to the length of their wiring. It took so long to get the new BCM that the wire hung loose and now seem to have enough length to fit on either side. Before they are plugged up I'd like to know which goes where. One comes from the floor and the other from overhead. Does anyone know which plugs where when looking at the BCM with it mounted in place?

    • @alanross8313
      @alanross8313 6 років тому

      Looking towards the front of the van the overhead plug goes into the bottom right side of the BCM. If you have the junction block bolted to its mounting it is a tight squeeze to get the left hand plug inserted. Just pull the carpet out of the way and it will go in.

    • @rogerd4559
      @rogerd4559 5 років тому

      I believe the one from overhead goes on the left and the one from the floor is on the right not sure because I had the common sense to mark all my connectors before removing them

    I attempted the easy fixes and solder connections with no luck, and also had wonky wiper behavior, so it looks like this is the issue. • @CarsandCoding
      @CarsandCoding  9 років тому

      Marcus Butler Ok the clock spring. The clockspring is a common problem and is still covered under a lifetime warranty in the USA. I would say that the BCM could be your problem but the fact that your windshield wiper problem started when you replaced the clock spring, probably is related to the wiring in the column. I am not an expert though.

Do a search for it in the forums on chryslerminivan.net funny as it sounds one of the common problems is a bad solder joint in the instrument cluster, which can be temporarily fixed by hitting the top of the dash. forum.chryslerminivan.net/forum.php

      @CarsandCoding  7 років тому

      Dennis Fucci there is nothing to program but they keep the mileage of the junkyard car. So if you want the mileage programmed you need someone to do that for you. Might be worth it in your case since you have such low mileage. Bcm is about $40 at junkyard, but probably $150 to set the mileage. I did not program mine because I don't care about mileage. Get one and try it first before programming though in case you get a bad one.

      These cars are incredibly difficult to work on cause they change back and fourth from ASA to metric, I think those 4 connectors I used a 7/16th short socket on a 9 inch extension I cut one end off the extension so it would fit in my cordless drill. I backed them out in 5 seconds. the two white BCM connectors on the bottom must be dosconnected first as the cables are so damn short that they wont release the juction block and BCM. after unfastening all 6 connectors the whole assembly will drop right out

    • @rogerd4559
      @rogerd4559 5 років тому

      I suspect so! The body control module or BCM controls all those accessories and is a notorious failure on Dodge and Crysler, plymouth products due to crappy soldering proceedures on the BCM board, instrument panel ( lets hope not the ECM) that crack over time. its a built in failure to force you to buy another vehicle. all they had to do is go the extra mile and bolt the heavy componants down to the board, rather then rely on solder to hold them in place! If it were a Military componant board in an aircraft.. you damn well bet it would be done properly to keep their helicoptors from dropping out of the sky

      So that bolts come out completely? Ive been trying to take them out with a wrench but in a certain step the bolt doesnt come out, It look like It is stripped because i continúe on turning with the wrench and never end. What would cause the bcm to go bad and what does the bcm do

    • @CarsandCoding

      BCM is the body control module. It is the distribution block and computer for all electronics in the body of the car. All lights, electronic motors, power windows, alarm, instrument cluster, hvac, etc. It fails when solder joints crack, components fail, or it gets wet in a flood. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      You are on the right track. try resolder first, then get new cluster at a pick-a-part salvage yard or on ebay. you can't change out stepper motor, it's in the circuit board. If only your gas guage is bad I don't think bcm is your problem. sounds like a bad wire. if bcm is bad then all kinds of things start going wrong in the cluster and interior, windshield wipers, etc

    It was totally unessesary to remove the whole juntcion block, fuse block and relays and risk disaster of reconnecting all those connectors wrong. and 10 times the extra work. all you had to do is unbolt the junction block from the dash panel/firewall, lift it disconnect two cponnectors from the BCM, loosen the 4 screws holding the BCM to the junction block then slide it out. I can understand why you did that though. you wernt able to buy a BCM seperate from the Junction block so you went with replacing the whole unit combination.

    Great video and very informative on how to do this job. I wish u went into more details on why u R&Red this BCM. Since it's a huge job, I need a little more than just the instrument cluster being out. My instrument cluster went out on my 98 dodge caravan 3.3l went out and the problem was the instrument cluster. Bad solder joints. Resoldered and back on line. If I would have replaced the BCM, the instrument cluster would still be bad.

      Instrument cluster was out, odometer did not show any numbers, speedometer didn’t work, gauges would randomly work, interior lights such as doors and dome light would randomly work, windshield wipers would wiggle randomly. Like the wipers didn’t come on randomly, they would jiggle in place, like move a quarter inch. Random stuff. But I replaced the gauge cluster and that didn’t fix the issue so then I went to the BCM next.

    i have a 98 dodge caravan. And i have every intention on setting it on fire when i get a new car. New starter, Alternator, Power steering pump pulley since its made of plastic and sheered off without warning, TOWED New brake lines that where rotted and started leaking with no brakes to stop, TOWED. Drivers side window does not go down, Passenger side only works somtimes. Heater blower motor needs kicked to work somtimes, Fuel gauage goes to empty then back to what its actually at and beeps low fuel ligt 35 times a minute. Oil light flashes at idle, Burns oil, Leaks oil, Water pump leaks slowly, Muffler rotted and replaced, Wipers only work on low or high no delay, heat and ac only work on high, Body is rotting, Paint is worse then a 1991 chevy, Vacum hoses are cracking and breaking, Exhaust leak at the manifold, headliner sunk, Power door locks on front doors shot.Transmission slips when super cold, Belt drive engineered with smooth idler and tensioner pulleys so everytime it rains the belt simply falls off and in some cases ruins the belt. TOWED. Tow bill $100 a pop. 191k Miles. Nuff said.

      A lot of the things you mentioned are basic maintenance. Hoses don't last 20 years. Neither do starters, alternators, brake lines, water pump. The belt you can replace with a upgraded tensioner. I fixed all the things you mentioned on my 1997 Dodge Caravan in the first year I had it (I paid $1200 for it initially), and once I got everything fixed in the first year, I drove it 40,000 miles in 3 years. The final straw for me was water leaking through the roof in the back and a colony of ants that made its home in the HVAC that I couldn't get rid of. So I sold it for $800 and bought a new Golf Sportwagen. The dodge caravan was a cheap ride that could haul a ton of stuff. No regrets.
