I saw this film in the theater when it was released. At the time I thought it was the greatest movie I’d ever seen. I still think that. Gives me chills every time.
I also saw this at the theater in fall 1982 and remember it well. (of course I have seen it countless times on cable TV since then and I know most of the lines by heart). I remember even then (I was only 12 1/2) thinking it was a really good movie.
We have veterans of the Chechen wars, many of them have such a thing, as the switch in their head switches and it is impossible to stop. One guy with a hangover almost stabbed his brother, fortunately his brother was stronger than him.
It’s true. I had met a veteran at a job I had during the summer as a teenager. I was told by my supervisor to not mention Vietnam because he had PTSD from the war. He was a nice guy and enjoyed working with him. I still remember him to this day and meeting him made me sensitive to war veterans especially to my father who was a WW2 veteran.
2:01 The gratuitous foot sweep and elbow to the face of the guy who is just carrying packages, and has no idea what is going on, is my favorite moment in all of cinema. I have watched it thousands of times, and I will watch it thousands more.
I'm wondering why he didn't just shove the guy out of the way with his shoulder, as there is no way he would've drawn a weapon beforehand with an armful of packages. I guess it just added to the brutality of the scene.

Ramboo's escape from the police station is brilliantly written & filmed. Very realistic combat scenes. The blows were quick to weak points on the human body, one,two shots move on to the next opponent. I trained in martial arts for years. This movie really got it right.
In the commentary track for this scene, Stallone said that he worked and trained with Navy SEALs for this fight scene to make it ultra-realistic, especially for him taking on a small number of opponents, one after the other.
i knew younger people who always laughed when they heard "Rambo" then after actually sitting and watching this movie were baffled as to what an amazing story this actually is.
Me and my Uncle were watching it when it was on telly, and my Aunt jokingly asked if we were watching “Rambo 637”, it’s baffling to think how restrained and actually meditative the first film is when the bombastic gun-ho power fantasy sequels became more known in pop-culture.
What many don't realize, is this movie portrayed how many Vietnam vets were treated at that time. Keep in mind, this was only 7 years after the official end of the Vietnam war. First Blood brought a lot of attention to how horribly many of our honorable Vietnam war vets were being treated by society.
Police brutality has been going on for eons. They literally get away with murder. Rambo ended up getting blamed for this and went to jail but no one asked what led to him going on rampage. I hope the Biden administration has a federal policy regarding reform of the police root and branch. We might not hear much of it but their brutality is directed at lower class white folks too.
You are absolutely right. I watch a few documentaries on UA-cam. Vietnam Veterans returning home did not know about the protests, I guess stars & stripes didn't mention it. I understand the protesting about the war,but too take it out on the young men returning home is unacceptable then & now.

When you have a ptsd spell, everyone looks like bad guys to you, and unfortunately it cannot be stopped, I’ve worked around psych patients as a paramedic/firefighter, and it’s the scariest thing you will ever witness.
1:33 is my favorite. The guy had no idea what was going on and out of nowhere a batshit crazy Rambo jumps him and demolishes him in 2 seconds with zero chance to fight back. Just like that the whole day ruined.
I really like rambo as a character. Not just cuz he's badass at fighting, but because as a character, he's tortured inside and out. People can respect his skills, but also that he hates that life he lived that gave him those skills. He doesn't glorify violence and only uses it when he or someone is in danger.
Veteran is a wide term I grant you, I've looked up the exact defenition "an ex member of the armed forces" There are veterans then that aren't good people, but my thinking is there are many of those who have been in combat fighting for a flag and that generally deserves respect. I think that's obvious enough. Thanks for requesting extreme specificity I guess. But I think most people understand my point here generally. It's such a wide term and things aren't so simple I think we can agree.
One of his best movies. First Blood and Rocky had a lot in common. I think the most endearing aspect is the ascension of the underdog. Both are far greater than they even know and they are seen as the least of us. So, in the doing of the story, they become endeared to the viewer because they are both worthy and downtrodden. Only until they have their spirit awakened by injustice and castigation do they become the thing they always were. A hero. This is a very good take on how we treat the people we send to war and the people we write off as stupid or course. It's all in the writing.
Watched this film at the age of 14. The way rambo was being harassed by the cops for no reason, it broke my heart for him. This film is still one of the best memories now in my late 20s
I was 8 when this came out. Watched it when I was 11-12 and enjoyed it for its raw action. Years later, one can still appreciate the artistic value of it all, and the -very realistic- depiction of the psychological underpinnings. Great iconic movie imho.
My grand father was a soldier, when he watched this movie he always went mad and started screaming like if where inside the movie. I love this movie, because of the fact that Rambo just likes to be alone, and i feel that i am somehow like him, and he kicks ass when someone gets in his way or he just tries to survive. He just wants to live life and walk around or just chill, that's what characterizes this character Sylvester Stallone played, the most.

I could explain it better, but I didn't read the book, so some details are missing for me, but basically, the police chief was being a scumbag, because he thought John didn't saw enough in Vietnam to be traumatized, and he saw hell in Korea...
This movie feels even more real and logical today than it did in the 80s. Thanks to mobile phones w/camera capabilities, the internet, and video sharing sites today, we have seen way too many examples of how the police can be unprofessional, power hungry, judgmental, prejudice, instigate little infractions to major lethal situations, use unnecessary force, held to zero accountability, create false crimes to justify their actions. I love this movie! Great writing, directing and acting!
. . . in the USA, yes. Most civilised countries the police are a hundred times more restrained by Law. And a thousand times braver personally. When the right wing piece of filth murdered the innocent people praying in the Mosque in Christchurch New Zealand ( shooting women and girls in the back, then running away when men succeeded in disarming him ) he drove away though the City. Two Police officers saw his car, ran him off the road INSTANTLY with no warning, then swarmed him and arrested him by hand THOUGH THEY THEMSELVES WERE ARMED and could have shot him dead lawfully.
A fantastic action packed movie from start to finished. When you left the cinema you knew you would remember this movie forever! Stallone was brilliant!
it was freezing out when they shot these scenes and stallone rocked this wearing only a tank top, while wet, riding a motorcycle. that's a special effect in itself, they don't make movies like this anymore.
Stallone played the part of Rambo fantastic. That was probably my favorite part of the movie. The cops pushed him for no reason. My opinion, they got what was coming to them.
This is a pretty good film as it pertains to showing how veterans were treated after Vietnam and especially those with PTSD which wasn’t treated nor viewed the same way as it is today.
Very true, many miss or overlook what he discovers about his wartime friends. Disease, cancer, biochemical agents rotting them away. A very similar experience after any war. Iraq veterans got it pretty bad but had to gight the VA hard for benefits/compensation.
Well PTSD is really the inability to adjust to life after a traumatic event, in this case warfare was traumatic but that didn't manifest in him not being able to handle warfare, it was civilian life he couldn't handle.

@@supereldinho They're movies, the director chose to put Rambo in those situations because he's not a real person that can feel or die. Additionally, in real life many Vietnam veterans did multiple tours because they couldn't deal with the way they were treated when they came back.
@@ultimate0706 Doesn't change the fact all the movies after First Blood completely ignored and disregarded its message and devolved into dumb action movies. You don't just go from watching Rambo have an emotional breakdown and pouring his soul out to the colonel to seeing him go "yeah I'm over it, let's kill a bunch of people" in the next movie, especially when First Blood had a grand total of 1 kill and it was unintentional on Rambo's part. Hell, the guy even wanted to turn himself in after that, explicitly saying he didn't want more people to get hurt. The sequels unfleshed him out and turned him into a murdering brute. That's reverse character development if I've ever seen any.
2 out of 3 of the guys he attacks while running away say something before he attacks them, so he knows where they are. The 3rd guy opens the door so he also knows where he is.
Besides the weather, there's something very nostalgic about looking at the scenery, the deli and restaurant. The overall quality of the film reminds me of sneaking into my brother's room and watching movies like this on WHT back in the day. Lol! Good times.
I loved this scene. A classic fight scene. 1 against 6. I just noticed something. There is a jail prisoner witnessing the whole thing from his cell. When Gault swung and missed with his club another deputy runs away. Rambo grabs his neck. Listen to Gault when it happens. LOL!! Then he gets 2 knee shots to the solar plexes. Rambo hits him hard with a backhand punch.
I love how he goes through the trouble to whoop ass on 2-3 people there at the end who didn’t want any trouble 🤣… almost reminds me of Lancelot’s assault in Monty Python
This movie is amazing and holds your attention from start to finish. The translation in my country was perfect, Rambo has many fans here and it was every kid's dream to be like him at that time. Old movies are much more interesting than current ones. Greetings from Brazil.
Not true. PTSD, and especially K-PTBS, can and have been been experienced by many in relationships (look it up). Mine was by my parents, although quite differently. Trust me, it is HEAVILY disturbing and affecting one's life. You do not need to go to an official war, any war, especially in families or relationships as an adult, will do just fine - to a greater extent if you are the more sensitive one. But I forgave my parents. Jesus was - like always - right in this one: Forgive and you will get peace (and receive forgiveness yourself). I do not say it was easy, though, nor is it now. But it is the only way. I highly recommend therapy as well as it is very relieving and gives important insights and help strategies.
A very important difference between the movie and book is that Rambo never kills anyone in the movie. In the book he killed 30 people, including civilians for emotional reasons.

Brian Dennehy was one of my favorit actors. I believed him in every role I saw him in, even as the final boss in Gladiator 😁 (No, not that one, the 1992 one)

Galt tried to kill an unarmed man, who was helplessly clinging to a cliffside. It was, by any measure, purely self-defense. There was NO way of knowing that a rock versus a rifle would result in the death of the guy aiming his rifle on the rock holder.

I was born in 1978. Rambo, Cobra were one of the first movies I saw. Unforgettable memories.

Stallone earned everything he got...this was a masterpiece.
Incredible scene, incredible film, made me cry. So profound a film, a lesson in the respect all veterans deserve no matter what.

This movie feels even more real and logical today than it did in the 80s. Thanks to mobile phones w/camera capabilities, the internet, and video sharing sites today, we have seen way too many examples of how the police can be unprofessional, power hungry, judgmental, prejudice, instigate little infractions to major lethal situations, use unnecessary force, held to zero accountability, create false crimes to justify their actions. I love this movie! Great writing, directing and acting!

it was freezing out when they shot these scenes and stallone rocked this wearing only a tank top, while wet, riding a motorcycle. that's a special effect in itself, they don't make movies like this anymore.
Stallone played the part of Rambo fantastic. That was probably my favorite part of the movie. The cops pushed him for no reason. My opinion, they got what was coming to them.
He let them live. They didn't deserve mercy.

This is a pretty good film as it pertains to showing how veterans were treated after Vietnam and especially those with PTSD which wasn’t treated nor viewed the same way as it is today.
Very true, many miss or overlook what he discovers about his wartime friends. Disease, cancer, biochemical agents rotting them away. A very similar experience after any war. Iraq veterans got it pretty bad but had to gight the VA hard for benefits/compensation.

One of the best moment in cinema that i can remember, timeless piece.
This action sequence is one of the greatest turns of events in cinema. Up until the escape, he seemed like an unusual, yet relatively harmless guy.

Well PTSD is really the inability to adjust to life after a traumatic event, in this case warfare was traumatic but that didn't manifest in him not being able to handle warfare, it was civilian life he couldn't handle.

@@supereldinho They're movies, the director chose to put Rambo in those situations because he's not a real person that can feel or die. Additionally, in real life many Vietnam veterans did multiple tours because they couldn't deal with the way they were treated when they came back.
@@ultimate0706 Doesn't change the fact all the movies after First Blood completely ignored and disregarded its message and devolved into dumb action movies. You don't just go from watching Rambo have an emotional breakdown and pouring his soul out to the colonel to seeing him go "yeah I'm over it, let's kill a bunch of people" in the next movie, especially when First Blood had a grand total of 1 kill and it was unintentional on Rambo's part. Hell, the guy even wanted to turn himself in after that, explicitly saying he didn't want more people to get hurt. The sequels unfleshed him out and turned him into a murdering brute. That's reverse character development if I've ever seen any.

Besides the weather, there's something very nostalgic about looking at the scenery, the deli and restaurant. The overall quality of the film reminds me of sneaking into my brother's room and watching movies like this on WHT back in the day. Lol! Good times.

I loved this scene. A classic fight scene. 1 against 6. I just noticed something. There is a jail prisoner witnessing the whole thing from his cell. When Gault swung and missed with his club another deputy runs away. Rambo grabs his neck. Listen to Gault when it happens. LOL!! Then he gets 2 knee shots to the solar plexes.
Rambo hits him hard with a backhand punch.
I wonder what happened to that deputy? Maybe it was his first day 😂😂

Those who never been there, never really understand.
Not true. PTSD, and especially K-PTBS, can and have been been experienced by many in relationships (look it up). Mine was by my parents, although quite differently. Trust me, it is HEAVILY disturbing and affecting one's life. You do not need to go to an official war, any war, especially in families or relationships as an adult, will do just fine - to a greater extent if you are the more sensitive one.
But I forgave my parents. Jesus was - like always - right in this one: Forgive and you will get peace (and receive forgiveness yourself). I do not say it was easy, though, nor is it now. But it is the only way.
I highly recommend therapy as well as it is very relieving and gives important insights and help strategies.

A very important difference between the movie and book is that Rambo never kills anyone in the movie. In the book he killed 30 people, including civilians for emotional reasons.

I know he never meant to kill Galt, but I would be lying through my teeth if I said I wasn't happy when he died.
Galt tried to kill an unarmed man, who was helplessly clinging to a cliffside. It was, by any measure, purely self-defense. There was NO way of knowing that a rock versus a rifle would result in the death of the guy aiming his rifle on the rock holder.
Well yeah. Galt abused and then tried to execute Rambo. Karma.
Galt threatened the helicopter pilot with his life. He was a total “dick” and deserved what happened. Of course related to the story.
