this reminds me of some similar format pieces by Saint Saens: their sound & style make me think they were intentionally composed and published as short works for home performances (like songs without words) rather than as concert pieces, but I may well be wrong. It is unlike other Faure chamber music pieces. I tend to think of them (the sonatas, trios etc.) like jazz pieces on one level: "the sound of surprise": you never know what is coming next, bar by bar. It's so unusual for chamber music to be written that way. I don't know enough about music to tell you if or how their form is as bizarre as they sound to me. All i know is that I have to be in a particular state of mind to listen to them: when I want to listen to what sounds like improvised chamber music. That does happen sometimes. By contrast, a piece like this & nearly all Saint Saens is form, form, form. Even if, again with limited musical knowledge, i cannot accurately tell what that form is, "one" can always tell what's happening. The form sits easy.

Bflat and Eflat: Bflat major. Dedicated to Arma Harkness. Ok...that was the intent.
