I have ordered a bunch of stuff from hunters lodge, to include the Spanish Mauser and 48 battlefield pickup martini Henry and other things. They have always been great with me and I got whole complete rifles that cleaned up very nicely! I would suggest them to anyone always had great experiences with them!!

The Short Lee Enfield's were nice rifles! I inherited one from dad in .303 British. A MKIII built for the Australian Army in 1918. Very good condition, as it was still wrapped like a mummy in Cosmoline and bandages, with paper on the outside.

Acetone bath in two different plastic bins for 1-2 days. Good wash in soapy water and brisk, thorough cleaning afterwards. There will be pitting. Use a muzzle loader turbo cleaning spray. Then tornado brush the bore shiny. Grease the bolt. CLP the metal. WD40 is not for firearms. You may have hidden cracks in the stock. Ironing the stock with a moist towel to raise dents and doing fill jobs can be done. If it's solid, light sanding of the stock, hitting those rough areas. Then let the wood sit immersed in a plastic bin of unboiled linsead oil 5 - 7 days, checking it daily. Then dry the wood 3 - 5 days. Afterwards 3 - 5 coats of boiled linseed oil over two weeks with light sanding. Metal - clean, degunk, steel wool and CLP elbow grease until rust and pitting are addressed. Then if you're not in the mood to spend 200 - 300 dollars to have it refinished, spray it with even coats of high temperature engine paint. A primer coat, then an overcoat when dry. It's called "British black." If the headspace checks out, that is a 98 Mauser and all 7.92x57 ammo, including SAAMI spec 200 grain 2500+ FPS pills is what it can shoot. You're not stuck shooting American loaded 8MM designed for 1888s with .321 transitional bores and launching a round nose 170 grain soft point bullet at 2000 FPS.
There was once the rumor floated about Spanish M98s that because of inferior metallurgy they were more subject to setback. The metal does tend to be soft, but not as soft as Mexican M98s which don't have accelerated setback issues. So it is probably an urban legend. That being said, if you intend to rebarrel the weapon, it's probably a good idea to stick with non magnum calibers. If you do consider putting a .30-06 barrel on it, follow CMP advice for Garands and 1903s as to load and bullet weight. Lothar Walther makes excellent military contour replacement barrels for Mausers.
Otherwise, it's a solid dirty rifle and will probably outlive you. If you try out the cleaning and restoration method I've indicated you could probably get $300 - $400 back on it if you were to sell it. If you do things right. Yes, you'd have to get a cleaning rod. The sling is toast, but a Yugo M24/47 sling should be a close match. The bayonet will these days cost more than what you paid for the rifle, but 20 years ago they were about $30: some shops with old inventory occasionally have items underpriced from the era. Especially if they have an old gun section and usually deal in higher end guns. Although in the South many shops don't update the pricing on old inventory outside of major cities. At gun shows everything is overpriced. GunBroker is essentially the barometer for the market price.

    • @The_Casual_Collector

Wow, that's impressive. Thanks for all the info! Thanks for the info on the sling as well. Definitely a lot to consider.

The lower handguard is slightly shortened and there are no upper short & long handguards. Would love to know when was it made and if is really a Spanish Mauser or a German Mauser. Then I made my own invoice and sent it in with a money order, times range from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. It does help if you have a C&R license, in which case you'll provide a signed copy with your payment and invoice. It helps to ask first, though, if they still have whatever rifle you're looking for when you email. Calling works, too, but its hard to reach them a lot of times.

I usually make decent offers on them right before they pack them up and get awesome deals with out the hard tennis elbow and work involved with restoration which I enjoy and do for people. Best time to get one and also make new friends and solidify old friendships by doing this. Perfect example of lately on milsurp last show got K98 for 800 90% condition and a VZ24 perfect condition for 450 because they didn't want to pack up the huge amount of firearms and not get rid of much because of not only the surplus drying up but the disposable income has also been drying up just as fast if not faster than the market has.

That's a good point, I know in the last couple of years here, prices at gun shows have been astronomical, but things might start loosening up with the present state of the economy. I do have a buddy that got a steeply discounted gun safe with your same approach. So there no reason to think it shouldn't work on guns as well. Thanks.

I would rather throw my money in the toilet after conducting my business than pay these trash distributors.
