    Great tutorial here my friend. I've often recommended this setup for taking phone calls and/or if you'd prefer to just take the Zoom or Skype call on your smartphone rather than the computer.
    Glad to see that you are using multiple aspects of the Zoom recorder as it's very capable.

      Thanks Kevin, appreciate it! You can't believe how frustrated I was when I first tried to do a 2 way phone conversation recording on the Zoom H6. Because the H6 recorder doesn't have "mix-minus" functionality, I was getting terrible echo/reverb from my own voice or the other person talking. After watching more than several different UA-cam videos on how to do H6 phone call recording, I was even more perplexed because everyone had a different method plus they all recommended a certain special sauce ingredient to use, such as iRig adapter, or various types of cables, including various advanced adjustment settings on the H6 recorder. At one point, I must have had 20 different audio products in my Amazon shopping cart to get cuz all those different UA-cam guys gave different recommendations for all types of accessories to get in order to record phone calls with the H6. It was maddening! So much to my relief after spending several days of trial and error, I came to this method that I'm using now which works great. The reason it was important for me to figure this out is because I want to use this as a low-tech method of simply having one on one phone conversation with a guest for a podcast with little that can go wrong. Plus not every podcast guest wants to be on camera and played back for the world to see, but a camera-shy guest might be more inclined to want to do a simple phone call podcast for audio only. So that's all part of my rationale, hope all that made sense.

      @@caseyonlocation8257 Casey, I completely agree with every word that you write here above. I, too, want to create a podcast through phone calls (with no video) so I can upload those calls to a podcast app like Anchor, for example. I have a question about your set up. Where do you store audio file? In the camera? In the H6? And what if you don't have a camera running, would you store it in your Mac or just the H6? And do you have and do you have any backups in case the H6 has a bad day?
      Casey, the next time you're in the Vancouver area, I'd love to get you a coffee. Nah, my wife and I will take you out for dinner. You deserve it with all the experimentation you had to do to put this video together.

    I put my smartphone on a stand so I can position it close to my mouth so the person I’m calling can hear me better through my phone’s mic. I connect the line out from my phone to the 3.5mm line in on the XY capsule. That captures a stereo signal and also allows me to record a backup file at -12db so I don’t have to worry about clipping. This is a great setup. Even if I accidentally talk over the other person, that isn’t recorded on their channel. You do have to mix the audio you record from the smartphone with the separate track you record of your side of the conversation in post.

    Hi. I bought the H6 and tried the exact same setup. However, when I covered the built-in mic on the Samsung with my fingertip, the receiver could not hear me anymore. I assume this means the receiver hears what is picked up from the Samsung built-in mic, not the H6 recorder or your SM58 mic. If you still have the H6 I would love to hear back from you if you could test this yourself.

      @@j.strong8480 Hmm, I can't find my own comment reply to you on the B&H channel. I have a feeling B&H must have deleted my comment, maybe cuz they felt it was getting off topic, not sure? Anyway, let me paraphrase here what I previously wrote: I refunded both my Zoom H6 recorder and the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 audio interface. Why? Cuz I got the amazing Rode Rodecaster Pro all-in-one podcasting solution instead. The Rodecaster with its 4 XLR mic channels plus 3 remote channels of USB & Smartphone & Bluetooth are extremely convenient for having remote guests come on at the same time. I'm very certain that 2 remote guests can be added at same time on the Rodecaster (such as simple phone call using Smartphone channel plus a Zoom/Skype/Facebook/VOIP app (etc) connection using the USB channel. I'm not sure if the Rodecaster can handle 3 remote guests at the same time, but I'm very certain it can handle 2 at the same time. Plus the Rodecaster has built in mix-minus functionality on all 3 of the remote connection channels so that the remote guest(s) will not experience the unwanted echo/reverb feedback from his own voice (extremely useful). The Zoom H6 does not have this mix minus feature. As for the upcoming Zoom PodTrak P4, that also looks like a very slick device and with built-in mix minus feature too. However from what I can tell from the Zoom video advertisements, the PodTrak can only handle 1 (one) remote guest, in addition to 3 XLR microphone channels for live in-person podcasting. If there is no remote guest added, the PodTrak is designed to accept 4 XLR mic channels. So in that regard, the Rodecaster has the advantage of being able to handle 2 remote guests simultaneously (maybe 3, not sure?) whereas the PodTrak can only handle 1 remote guest. On the potential negative side, the Rodecaster is much larger in size than the PodTrak, plus costs 3x more. But the Rodecaster is designed to do much more with all its many features, especially with the latest firmware 2.1 upgrade. Either way, both the Rodecaster or the PodTrak is waaaaay better than the Zoom H6 recorder if your main purpose is for podcasting. Hope that's helpful information. EDIT: Upon further review, it appears the Zoom PodTrak can handle 2 remote calls simultaneously, as per this B&H video: ua-cam.com/video/NaJp5kMiySU/v-deo.html

    This setup for recording a phone call is using the Zoom H6 recorder and my Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. I have no idea if this same setup will work with an iPhone since I'm an Android user. By the way, sorry for the low audio on my part during parts of the video, I should have spoken more directly into the Shure SM58 dynamic microphone while filming this video. The Shure SM58 mic being a cardioud design requires speaking very closely to the mic, otherwise my voice comes out low volume in playback. This entire video was filmed raw with totally zero editing and post processing applied.

    I have a zoom h6 and i use it with my galaxy S9 plus with a usb type c to mini usb cable. Plugs right into the h6 to my phone. Basically everything is pretty much the same except I'm only using the usb cable for the back & forth communication instead of my audio jack. The drawback is i can only use 1 phone at a time. The way you showed us looks like I'd be able to use multiple phones. Thanks for this 👍🏾 does the same principle work with phones that have audio jacks?

    does the 3.5 mm port of the XY capsule support TRRS? I thought it supported only TRS. I connected a lapel mic with TRS and plugin power but it didn't work. But with TRS adapter it did. secondly do we need plugin power to switched on when phone is connected to the 3.5 mm port of XY?

      I wish I could answer your question, but I sold the Zoom H6 awhile ago because I no longer needed that. So I don't have an answer, nor can I do any testing to answer your question. The Zoom PodTrak P4 with its built-in mix-minus functionality meets my needs for recording phone calls without having to "jerry-rig" anything, such as what I had to do with the Zoom H6. If you are in need of mix minus functionality (to avoid the unwanted echo) because you are always recording phone calls, you might consider also getting the Zoom PodTrak P4.

    • @arete_
      @arete_ 2 роки тому +2

      @@caseyonlocation8257 It does not work. At least not the way you think. The receiver can hear you through the built-in microphone on the Samsung, but you assumed she could hear you through the H6 or the SM58. However, as @Product Review said, there is no signal being sent from the H6 to the phone because the phone is connected to the line INPUT on the H6. You cannot send an IN signal to an OUT port and vice versa. Unless you are using a TRRS connector, but you did not in this example. Also I don't think the H6 supports TRRS, only TRS.
      To be fair though it is understandable that you made this mistake. The receiver will hear you just like a regular phone call because in a GSM/4G conversation the audio bitrate is greatly reduced and there is a lot of audio signal processing happening on her phone. All in all, this results in what sounds like a normal phone call to her.
      In theory, you could just leave out the SM58 and talk directly into the XY mic. She would still hear you through the Samsung mic, but your own voice would be recorded through the XY mic. Same thing, just without the SM58.

      Are you referring to the stand holding the microphone or the stand holding the Zoom H6 recorder? Those are two different items. The stand holding the H6 recorder is a very compact Joby brand tripod with an adjustable ball head that is designed to hold a small camera or smartphone. Since the Zoom H6 has the standard 1/4" threads, it will easily attach to the Joby tripod stand. Here's an Amazon link for the Joby stand: www.amazon.com/Joby-GripTight-Smartphone-Microphones-Accessories/dp/B07JM12C4N/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=joby+desktop+tripod&qid=1598645411&sr=8-1
