Truth can be stranger than fiction! A decade after being paralyzed in a car accident (NOT during the game season, btw), Gerry was killed in another car accident at 27. Sheryl died pretty young, too: In her thirties, of an unknown heart condition. Coach Boone made it until his eighties! Gerry had Coach Yoast's help in winning 2 gold medals in the Paralympics.

I only just learned Sheryl died young. I am so sad. Apparently she had 3 sisters and Boone was upset they just wanted her in the movie, but her sisters said it was fine, and she had already passed, so she couldn't give an opinion.

I'm not sure if that would've made it more impactful for historical accuracy, or lose the message entirely just for the shock value. Either way, it gets me emotional enough so I'm glad we got what we got. It doesn't need "end of Schindler's List" level of heaviness.
I'm still surprised they let "coon" and "monkey" fly though.

I wonder if they tried to put what was really thrown through Boone's window in the first cut. It was actually a toilet of some kind, not a brick. Boone said it haunted him for life that anyone could be that filled with hate.

    @user-sy5vv4ze3h Місяць тому +35

This classic movie holds a special place in my heart because I knew all the real people the movie depicts. I was a senior at T.C. when those events happened. Some old-timers don’t like the movie because it takes great liberties with the facts, but most of us love it because it is great drama with an important lesson. Julius died five years ago after spending many years traveling around the country, giving inspirational talks on race relations.
Some truths and untruths: Alexandria was not a southern hick town but a cosmopolitan, metropolitan suburb of 110,000. T.C. had been integrated since 1965 and at the time of the events (1971) was 30% Black. Hammond (Yoast’s school) had just two Black students because it was in the rich end of town, and G.W., in the poor end, was 60% Black. Race was not the main issue at T.C.; school rivalry was the issue, due to the merging of the three schools. Boone was not new to the school. He had been assistant coach at T.C. for two years preceding the events, and he was my P.E. teacher in his first year, when I was a sophomore. I liked Boone a lot and had a good relationship with him even though I was not a football player (I was varsity cross-country and track).
As most people know, Bertier’s first car accident was not as shown. It actually occurred after the season, but the movie changed it for dramatic purposes. T.C.’s hardest game was not in the State Championship, but in the regular season, 21-16 versus Marshall. T.C. had 9 shutouts in 13 games. I saw all the regular season games. Oddly, the team’s best star was not in the movie; he was a running back who led the state in yards and touchdowns. Yoast was one of the best coaches in the state at the time, and there was widespread resentment over Boone’s selection as head coach. It is true that the training camp at Gettysburg transformed the team, and students were marveling over it when they came back. Boone was a hard-driving coach as depicted, but he had a great heart for the game and for his athletes. Singing among the Black athletes (including some basketball players) was a longtime tradition at T.C, usually done in the locker room. The players were allowed to wear their jerseys in school at any time, and they actually acted as a calming influence as depicted briefly in the film. I witnessed an incident where a player used moral suasion and school spirit to stop a fight that was starting.
My favorite true thing in the movie is an event I witnessed: Ron Bass’s arrival. It actually occurred at T.C. in the first week after training camp. I was with the cross-country team, warming up at the end of the track straightaway. At the other end, a fancy car drove up the ramp from the parking lot and onto the track. Everyone was amazed; cars weren’t supposed to do that. Ron (with very long hair) and a military officer in uniform (his father) got out of the car and talked to Boone, who had stopped practice and came over to them to see what was going on. Later we learned that he was a hippie quarterback from California. He was terrific, both a fine passer and a great runner. He played much more than was shown, and he always kept our opponents guessing.
Bertier was a great success in the wheelchair Olympics in the shot put and discus throw. My brother met him once in the gym in those later years, and they played ping pong. Bertier won, because he was excellent my brother says.

He had already Malcom X in 1992 and then The Hurricane in 1998; both are movies based on real life people and he was concerned he might get typecast into playing historical figures. But I'm glad he did do this movie because he was exceptional in it.

Ethan Suplee is so fun in this movie. He just shows up with a love for football looking to make friends. Boone instantly respects Lastik for it and never rides him like the others because he already gets it. Even going out of his way to help with his academic scores so he can get into college and prove he's more than just poor white trash, as opposed to the other players who choose to perpetuate their hate and racism for their teammates and are punished for it.

I read up on TC Williams HS Football stats after the movie. That State Championship, Gary Bertier finished the season with over 142 tackles and 42 sacks (guy was like JJ Watt out there). The team had like 4 players with 4 Interceptions on Defense (Including Gary Bertier), 18 Interceptions on Defense. Their toughest game was around week 4 against Marshall (21-16), The rest of the 7-8 games the team switched to "Iron Man" where everybody played on Offense and Defense, and the proceeded to Shut Out or Blowout every Opponent. So the filmmakers switched that moment to the State Championship Game because it woulda been boring to watch a 27-0 Blowout of Andrew Lewis HS at the end of the Movie

All "based on a true story" movies have a varying degree of stuff added to make the story more fitting of the big screen treatment. Some attempt to keep things more authentic than others. It is frightening how successful "The Blind Side" became with almost every bit of the script being lies that made the Touhy family look like saviors versus people taking advantage of a kid's talent.

It shows that even those who are judged and stereotyped by society such as the coach and the black players we see in the film, we also see the same characters behave the same way to other characters, such as making snap judgements based on Ronnie's appearence and 'needing to find out if he's gay', or the coach telling a sports mad little girl that she should play with dolls and not taking her seriously at all.

Even when i was a kid i realized how important and emotional this movie was. Every American should be forced to watch this movie. Denzel is literally the best… and hot. Not gonna lie. I also find coach yoast hot too. Bill paxton maybe? I can’t remember his name. Love him. He can make me cry with a couple well spoken lines

Fun Facts: Cheryl will eventually grow up to be a cheerleader that needs to be saved in order to save the world and later she'll move on to star as a Country Singer Oh and also she's going to star in a high school movie where she's going to try to show an unpopular kid that she's not as perfect as he thinks she is. That one's called "I Love You Beth Cooper."

Also, they really didn't have to work to hard on getting the players to get along. For the most part, everybody was cool with everything. There natural was a few that had issues due to the way they were raised. But in real life the biggest obstacle to overcome was with the parents, the community.

This movie is great and a definite must watch for anybody that wants to show their kids the importance of being human. The reason i say that is because it shows us the past in this country, but also what it takes to triumph in the face of adversity. The people that i will always be there for regardless are those that i had the privilege to play sports with. Participating in sports as a teenager allowed to understand the value of the human spirit, and if it wasnt for this movie i probably would have never wanted to play team sports. I used to skate as a child, but team sports didnt really interest me, even though my older brother was all district line backer. It was this movie that showed me how important it is to build comradery.

A lot of the real people has passed away since the past few years. Both Boone & Yoast, and Julius passed in 2019, Petey, passed a year prior and Louie, passed a few years before that. What’s really sad is that Sheryl Yoast, passed in 1996 from a heart condition

This movie needs to be a requirement for all High School History classes. Freshman year or something. People understand there is still racism today, but they don't fully grasp how it affects people. This movie does a phenomenal job at showing how racism tears apart people and communities, but how trusting the soul of a person rather than their color is what is needed in all elements of life.

My dad graduated from TC Williams High School in 1972 (and my uncle in 73) and had been on the team so he knew many of the people the movie was about. From what he said, a lot of the fictionalization comes from some of the names and the timeline being heavily scewed. The sentiments were on point though according to him.
Fun fact, President Gerald Ford was in either the congress or senate a little before this time and his son attended TC Williams and was on the team and they had at leaat one team event at the Ford house that he recalled 😂 😂

This man went from half a planet to being ready to take on Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in a double team arm wrestling competition. It's WILD.
