The Jamaican world of sprinter hasn't always been dominated by the vast collection of stars we know and love today as can be seen in these classic Olympic highlights of Arthur Wint at the London 1948 Olympic Games.
Much before the world of sprinting become dominated with the likes of Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake, Herb McKenley and Arthur Wint were Jamaica's key athletes for the London 1948 Olympic Games.
McKenley was seen as the main favourite to win the 400 metres event. Except according to McKinley himself, who pointed at Arthur Wint as the one to be watched. Though not largely considered the favourite for the win, Wint definitely had the crowd's support from the local crowd having connection with Great Britain, from a Scottish mother to being a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force.
Arthur Wint entered in both the 400m and 800m. In the latter, he lost out to America's Mal Whitfield, and had to settle for Silver, something that made him determined not to finish behind Whitfield over the single-lap race. He thought McKenley might beat him, but nobody else.
As it was, McKenley was leading on the home straight after his trademark flying start but began to fade. Wint saw this and pushed himself to catch his friend and rival. With 20 metres to go, he overtook McKenley and won the race by a comfortable margin. It was Jamaica's first Olympic gold medal.
A second might have followed in the 4x400m, but for the cruellest of luck. Running the third leg, and desperate to beat the American team, Wint pulled a muscle and the Jamaicans had to pull out. It would take another four years before they'd get the success they so craved.

Arthur Wint was also a world class half miler and went on to become an important doctor. We shouldn't forget that.
please respect my great-grandfather he made a difference. he was also a pilot in the world war 2 and a doctor.
+Raquel Cowan Yeah Mon. Nuff respect
+Raquel Cowan My parents (British) lived in Jamaica for 3 years. My mum was Arthur Wint, your great-grandfather's, secretary and he was the doctor who delivered me in Lucea hospital! My parents played bridge with him, said he was a gentle giant and a wonderful man. We left when I was only a year old, and they took me back to visit in 2008, by which time he had unfortunately passed on. I would have been so happy and proud to have made his acquaintance.
+Raquel Cowan You have my utmost respect for your great-granddad. I read years ago that after Jamaica's unfortunate result in the London 4x400 relay final, the entire relay team stayed and trained together for four years with one single goal in mind... beat the USA in 1952. Wow, that takes dedication!
Judi I thank you and blessings to you and your family
Raquel Cowan: many Blessings!!
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS LEGENDARY JAMAICAN ATHLETE
Wint was a fantastic sprinter and had his own personality and style. Bolt is a fantastic sprinter and has his own personality and style. They are both wonderful adornments of the sport of Athletics. So sad to see people denigrating either of them. Celebrate how great they are/were. We look forward to the Jamaican stars of the future. I am looking forward to travelling to Beijing in August to see Usain in action once again. I am from Australia.
My dad used to train with him and gorden pirrey while doing his National Service in 1952 to 54.
I just hope all those who think we just recently got recognition in Athletics better think twice after viewing this footage, in addition we won the mile relay creating a World record at this same Olympic game in Stockholm 1952, we HAVE ONE OF THE GREATEST SCHOOL ATHLETICS PROGRAM IN THE WORLD FOR GOODNESS SAKE, SO I SAY TO THE IGNORANT STOP BEING PERVERSE THUS CEASE THE HATING.
+Audley McLean, you've understated our position,we've the greatest track & field school championship in the world, the rest of the world is trying to follow but the don't have the high school vibes.
My mother's Jamaican much love from me to the Jamaican islands
Audley mclean no it was not at this Olympic Games that Jamaica set the Mile Relay record, this is the 1948 London Olympics, it was at the 1952 Olympics (as you said), but only that it wasn't in Stockholm (as you said), the 1952 Olympic Games were actually held in Helsinki. Just corrections I still love your comment.
Helsinki. Liang died on 8th Feb'21.
I was listening to a podcast about Arthur Wint and decided to Google him to see what pictures I could find and was surprised to see a link to this video. This is amazing footage that I've never seen this before. I never even knew this existed. That was great to watch the legendary Wint claim JA's first ever Gold. It's great to see McKenley taking the silver for the 1-2. Fantastic! With the sounds and sights, I got a vivid sense of the atmosphere. Chills!
this my great grandpa aint he the coolest? wish I could've met him looks like he has the wint nose its a iconic physical feature in our family there has to be dozens of family I don't know but I can tell Arthur was the light in a dark room that motivated people to stay happy and strong.
Also family here heyyyyy
Yes to the wint nose. We all have it
The Gentle Giant, they used to call him. He was a RAF fighter pilot in WWII, Doctor and Ambassador. He also played Hockey while in Canada during flight school.
Arthur Wint was my Doctor in Linstead, St. Catherine. He was the best.
My mom told me that once
Arthur Wint was a great man.
46.2 is a fantastic time on that track.
I am so proud
Thank you so much im using this for my black history project on Arthur Wint. I took this up after doing Usain Bolt, looks like i got 2 famous track stars!
Setting The Record Straight.
Peace!
I have his autograph, given at Motspur Park on 19 May 1951, where, representing St. Bartholemew's Hospital, he won the quarter-mile in 48.5.
This video helps to highlight and emphasised the point that Jamaica,s success in Track and Field did not start with Usain Bolt. Herb McKinley was the actual World Recorder holder for this event in the 1940s.
Jamaica should commission a group to take all of our track and field history and put in a museum.
#Impressive!!!!!
His efforts are an inspiration to others!!!!!!!!!
Nobody seem to make much of the fact the Arthur Wint was also a Doctor of medicine and flew a Spitfire during the WWII en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Wint
Arthur Wint was 6ft 5" tall of Jamaica the height of Usain Bolt. He was running both 400 and 800 meters and was in the 1940s.
Obviously, the poster never heard of the great Herb McKenley. He was also there with Wint and just as great, holding a world record and world leader in three events.
+riptack heigberns You are correct Herb McKenley was another great Jamaican star of the time, who actually was the one pointing out Arthur Wint as "one to watch". We do mention him and that story in the full description, but unfortunately titles don't allow for full explanations. :) Thanks for your contribution!
IBBC Official Opening celebrations in Lincoln on April 12th 2018
And they still don't get it right , before them was the great GC Foster, he was before and one of the great sprinters ,the sports college was named after him
Before Bolt, there was Asafa Powell, arguably the greatest sprinter of all time. He mastered sprinting.
Ryder Washington no not even close
it's true, anyone who watches track and field will agree. Powell also has the ability to beat the world record, he just is emotionally weak.
Ryder Washington lol then how come Powell never wins anything
i just told u y
Ryder Washington cause he's not fast. That's why he doped before
I was wondering why they were playing "God Save the King" as Jamaica's national anthem but then I remembered that this was 1948 and we were still a British colony at the time. lol
Look at those strides!
RESPECT
Being that it was 1948 and run on a dirt track 46.2 was a good time.
I remember reading about these guys in grade 4/5.
So it's goes to show that is a long time Jamaica dominating the track
I think Bolt said Wint and McKenley were idols of his.
Wow!!!!!
Those are some great achievements!!!!!!
True champion - because everything were ital. in those days .... dirt track, natural food, etc.. Fast forward today with all the back-up staff, financial resources, advance sports medicine - manufacturers have the resources to research and develop various track surfaces and can make a track as fast as they want it to be. Not to mention the various running gears these lot have at their disposals.
This was probably the biggest upset of this olympics as Mckenley came in as a can't miss. He was the wr holder and was ranked #1 in the 100, 200 & 400 that same year, the only athlete up to now to have ever achieved that. Herb was the first to go sub 46 in the event.
Arthur Wint was also 2nd in 800 this same olympics, a feat he repeated in '52, along with gold in the wr smashing 4x400 relay.
How did he fit into a spitfire at 6ft4inch and well muscled. That deserves another medal.
people should just be proud of our country and what we achieve as a small island. you guys want to compare the pass to the future remember if we never have those wonderful people to represent Jamaica and keep our country's name in people mouth world wide we wouldn't have the future we have now from then till now our country is known for putting out some of the best runners and sprinters the world get to see so be proud and stop trying to brake down the pass we should embrace both pass and future thanks!!
Jamaicans are the best!
Patrick Smith I thought Che was the best! 😂
The great Arthur Wint
Just imagine how much faster he would be if he ran on a real track instead of dirt
For a split second there I was wondering if you'd mixed up the anthems. LOL. Thanks for posting. It gets so tiring to keep hearing how Jamaica had no records or domination in any event prior to 2008. Hopefully this will help Carl Lewis and the other naysayers. It's also great for me to be reminded that we have had and therefore can again attain 400m superiority.
Arya's Kill List We? Now you're French!? Just run. Either you're fast or you're not, no matter where you're from. So unless you're out there running, don't speak for anyone else but yourself. This isn't about being superior over other countries, it's about being the best that you can be. The rest is all B.S.!
@@BreuckelensFinest Yes Jamaica, oir small beautiful island, dominates
Dallas Long, Olympic Gold Medalist shot put was my Doctor in Irvine Ca.the best
Dr Wint
love it.....💗💗
Wow
Before Don Quarrie the Legendary Jamaican Sprinter
Quinella for Jamaica! Hats off to the greats!!
McKenley was also a great champion!!!
Wow!The British National Anthem playing for Jamaica
Still a British colony in 1948.
I love how the record was over 46 seconds then
With the tracks they ran on, it's surprising that the record was that good.
They were both over 6'3 (Bolt being 1 inch taller) as well
is nt yesterday or last week we've been at d pinnacle of sprinting so all the doubters can just go dive off #proudjamaican
my great grandfather
The Anthem sounded like the United States. Is the Jamacian Anthem similar to the United States? P.S. Usain Bolt THE BEST!!!!!! Those guys in 1948 should be watching their man come across the finish line like they did in 2008, 2012 & 2016 with a 100 Foot Outside Wide TV Screen. Go Jamaica! (And I say that as a United States Citizen) Jamaica will always produce the best runners EVER! Amen Brother! Amen.
It's "God Save the Queen", because Jamaica was previously a British colony.
Ahhhhhhhhhh. Very Good Point. I'm glad you answered my comment. Thank you. God Save the Queen of England ... for the Jamaicans. Haha. But really . ... Thank you for answering.
Rudecia Berny Actually, in 1948 it was “God Save the King.”
UWalvern0810 You're right haha
God Save the Queen (or King in those days) has the same melody as My Country 'tis of Thee, a sort of unofficial U.S. anthem.
wow big up to JA
Didn't Wint follow in the footsteps of Herb mcKenley?
what is the date for the race and the name for the winer
jamaica was part of the united kingdom and only gained independence in 1962. as you can see this was recorded in 1948.
Does anybody notice that they played the Union Jack (British Anthem) at the medal ceremony?
Still a British colony in 1948.
I wonder what happened to Keith Boyce and Byron Dyce.
opened for me
Three of top6 runner came from the U.S.A..I can see how powerful the U.S.A. used to be just after the World War2.
Comparing with Bolt , Wint acted much humbler.Nice!!!
tw10513 - Cold War change all genuinity my friend The West and East started taking various forms of drugs and changed the landscape forever - no wonder Jamaica, Trinidad and other smaller nations weren't producing the goods - simply were competing on uneven playing fields. Juliet Cuthbert, Jackie Pusey, Merlene Ottey, Bert Cameron, etc. etc. were competing against drugged-up Americans and Eastern Europeans.
John ARTWELL Didn't Merlene Ottey get busted for steroids as well? I vaguely remember hearing something about this back in the day. I could be wrong.
To be fair, in 1948 we were practically the only nation in the West that wasn’t on postwar food rationing.
@@UWalvern0810 weh u seh......that mash up nuff people a Jamaica my parents told me the stories
Wint, Rhoden.
Video. Not opening
At sprinting
Put them long LEVERS on em.
Bolt is the best, maybe Wint or McKenley have class but... they run SSSLOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW
on dirt fool. different track. at best a 43sec on todays track
First off the training vitamins shoes were different between then and now. so if my great-grandfather had some nike track shoes or puma today I think u would say different
+Raquel Cowan Do you think if your great grand father was competing today, he would win a medal? Athletics is a completely different sport now, its all about money - as it should be. Could he have trained while studying to be a doctor and compete with the likes of James of Grenada or even Bolt over 200 metres?
+Alex Levy Actually it was cinder, not dirt.
Slap Happy I dont give a damn. You know what i meant. Dont get me started please
LOL @ Britain's national anthem playing for Jamaica
This was when America decided to put blacks in track and field!
I guess you missed the 1936 Games. There was a guy named Owens who did quite well, among others.
Ever heard of Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalf and other blacks from the 1930s.
Eddie Tolan won the 100 & 200m at the 1932 games in LA.
why englisch nationalamthem at the end lol
WaveboardingOltenCH Because Jamaica was a common wealth territory of Great Britain back then, genius!
Because Jamaica didn’t get its independence from GB until 1962.
People tend to denigrate what they envy or are unable to aspire to because of a lack of ability and education. The problem for them is that while those they denigrate achieve something magnificent they in turn remain in the gutter and their own filth.
Asafa Powell was the Jamaican star sprinter whose title was succeeded by Usain Bolt, not this athlete
Wurst Eh Okay, we all know this already. This video is talking about the first great Jamaican sprinter & Usain Bolt was used at clickbait in order to get our attention to view the video.
And unlike Bolt, he would have done it honestly. Enough of Bolt!
?
@@hydroreviews3305 which part of my comment did you not understand, Hydro? It seems pretty straight forward to me. It beggars belief that so many people still imagine Bolt was clean. I despair at the credulity/ignorance of the average American/Jamaican punter. Jamaicans have much to be proud of ... just not in recent decades, but then, neither does the US as far as its sprinters are concerned. You have got to find your new heroes elsewhere ... or stick with your old.
@@user-rj5kx8wr6y You would love you believe that. They are testing him all the time so he would not be able to do that
@@AS-wj1du you are showing your innocence. When he was at or near his best, he had very little out of season testing. Keep in mind a fellow called Lance Armstrong... Tested all the time. Forget Bolt and move on.
Too bad Bolt lacks the class of Wint or McKenley
+broadjumper1 Bolt has CHARISMA which is why he is cherished all over the world! Too bad you can't appreciate the uniqueness & individuality of a personality like Bolt.
broadjumper1 I disagree. I think Wint & McKenley are from a different time with a different behavior style. Bolt is a fun loving guy that has a lot of fun and expresses it that fits his personality. He doesn't seem like a bad or classless person. I just think you are misinterpreting his fun expression as no class. He's a different person from a different time, enjoying himself. Plus he has said in the past that it helps him relax before he runs bc there is so much pressure. In fact, to me his is a class act. Maybe you can learn from him & loosen up a bit. You seem uptight! 😀
That national anthem was for a queen so currently he was not Jamaica’s first
Smh you’re slow
