  • UPDATE: 12-3-17. If you Install the right timing belt cover before the viscous fan pulley the right timing belt cover will go on easier.
    After removing the front bumper. Remove the inter-cooler shroud. This will allow the lock carrier to move further forward. This part was missing from the car I was working on.
    Best camera views and illustration. Include torque specification in newton meters and pound inch/feet.
    TIP:
    If you are doing the job with the vehicle in the service position. Removing the vibration damper and viscous fan pulley bolts is done mostly by feel...you cannot see them from above.
    Align the timing mark back to the same position it was before you remove it then rock left + right to feel for the notch in the pulley.
    To install the viscous fan pulley, catch the top-most small 5mm bolt in the pulley first, then the other bolt afterwards. The other internal bolt is located about 85-90% right of the viscous fan thread when looking down on the pulley.
    The camshaft sprocket bolt size is 16mm socket.
    Valve cover gaskets and Cam chain tensioner gaskets change

    Piece of cake, one good day and a half or 2 just to keep it a little longer and do double or triple checks.
    Nothing wrong with that! GJ!

      I drive a '99 A4 Quattro 2.8L and bank 1 (cyl. 1 2 3) are misfiring. Changed bank 1 CPM (cam position sensor) and no change. This leads me to believe the cam has jumped a tooth. I'm looking for cam locking tool 3391 and puller T40001. I will attempt to do this without removing everything on the front of the car. If you know a lead on this please share. Thanks, cheers.

    Great video with very clear instructions. One extra thing I always do to be 100% certain everything lines up is to use Tippex or a small white touch up brush a few small lines across the belt and every toothed sprocket before removing the belt. Then carefully transfer the white lines to the new belt exactly and when you fit the new belt they should all align. I find this give me extra peace of mind as even with TDC marks and locking tools, a sprocket can easily move by one tooth and may not be noticed.

    • @pnswg01
      @pnswg01  3 роки тому

      When you mark, you are basically following the last guy that set the timing, so for piece of mind, do it from scratch.
      If you have no tools, then you have no choice.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@pnswg01 Yes, that's true but I will have already checked that the timing is otherwise correct with all factory markers aligning first (i.e. from scratch). You will also know whether the timing was already out from the last timing belt change as the engine will run badly. My point was that by just relying on factory marks, it is possible to put the belt on one tooth out as shown in the video with the crankshaft pulley. If you also mark all sprockets with tippex, you are guaranteed to have matched the last timing belt, which you have checked with marks anyway. We basically agree !

      @Nemesis2747 2 роки тому

      This is an incorrect way to set timing and can lead you over stretch the belt. And you are not resetting the timing, you are copying the current timing. This car is timed with tools not marks. The sprocket is meant to spin freely and doesn't have timing marks, because the cam sprocket position does not matter. To make sure the engine is in time perfectly, spin the engine 2 times by hand and reinstall the tools. If they both go in without effort, you are in time.

    • @jeffskillman9275
      @jeffskillman9275 2 роки тому

      @@Nemesis2747 In response, if you read my comments I actually said this was an additional action to checking all marks with TDC so it therefore cannot be incorrect . It was an additional action. It doesn’t stretch the belt as the tipped or paint is minimal.

    • @pnswg01
      @pnswg01  4 роки тому +1

      It is just a safe way of making sure the bottom end (crankshaft) don't turn during the procesure. (When tensioning or installing the belt etc.)
      Since the camshafts are free to rotate before they are pressed on, if you are not careful the crankshaft can move slightly. It can be done without it if you mark the crankshaft gear 0 position and make sure it don't move. (Similar to the method used for 4 cylinder engines)

    We always used cheap squeeze clamps on the cam gears to keep them in time. Never had to remove cam pulleys? Audi can make a paper clip cost $500. If you use good timing belts, they have timing marks on them. ...and if you know how to time these things, it helps. They sure are awesome to drive, and profitable to work on.

    • @KorashSyndikat
      @KorashSyndikat 9 місяців тому

      You remove the pulleys to time it 100%.
      If you put on a new belt and tighten the belt with the tensioner the cams might rotate a slight bit and get out of time a fraction. By removing the cam pulleys they can move freely on the camshaft without changing the timings and thus you time it 100%.

      There are 2 TDC. If the timing was correct, the 2 larger holes in the oblong washer will be inwards (facing each other) if you are at the correct TDC. If not, rotate 360 degrees.
      Some time they are slightly off. Release the tension from the belt then use the tool to line them up. MAKE SURE THE MARK ON THE PULLEY ALSO LINE UP after the tool is securely on. LOCK the crankshaft. Everything should now be at the right spot to change the belt.

      Match timing belt with what mark(s)? plural with and S, meaning more than one? If you are using the tools in the video, there is only one mark to think about and it was shown in the video. (TDC mark)
      People make timing marks when they are not using these special tools. The method shown here is exactly how the manufacturer said it suppose to be done.
      The only way to do the job correct is using the correct tools. What happen if the last guy that did the timing was not that precise. (Not so much off to throw an error code) or the belt stretch a bit.
      Marking how you found it mean the same non-precise timing will be set after you do the job. Don't repeat what others have done by marking. If your mechanic use the marking method, take your car somewhere else.
