    I'm learning 3D modeling coming from a programming background and knew there * must * be a way to do this.
    The reason you need to select non-color is because normal maps are not color data - the color values are meant to tell what direction and intensity light should show on that vertex, not what color it should be. Reading it as an sRGB map means you are adding the color values as literal color instead of values for light.

    Thank you so much for sharing Alex! Baking normals is a bit of a nightmare in Blender LOL
    I believe the circular dependency warning happens because Blender sees the map it's baking to already connected to the object. If you sever the connection during baking, the warning doesn't happens I find the hardest part is working out the values for Max Ray Distance and Cage Extrusion, do you have any tips, or is it just trial and error? And what does the Cage Object picker do, could that help with finding the right distance?
