Cycling Across Cuba-Santiago de Cuba to Havana
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Cycling across Cuba at 15mph is the perfect speed to experience this beautiful country. I began the trip in Santiago de Cuba, headed through the steamy Sierra Maestra mountains to Baracoa, then headed west toward Havana, passing through all the major cities. The entire trip was about 850 miles through beautiful Cuban countryside.

Dude, you made my cry giving your bike to the Cuban Teacher. Grande Ryan! ese fue un acto de amor.
I'm still in touch with him too, went back last March and hung out with him
@@duzer Awesome Man!
@@duzer This was a nice thing to do!
Watched this video again this evening with my son Adam. he loved it!
Ryan, when you gave your bike to that gym teacher, my heart was pierced with a sword!
Dude, you are a really awesome soul!
May Jesus richly bless you!
Best,
Frado
Thanks Frado, it was an amazing moment...and we're still in touch, I saw him again in Cuba last march!
Ryan, way too kool! I'm nominating you as; "Mr. Bike Ambassador to the world!"
I watch your videos at work and it drives me crazy because I just wanna jump on my Specialized CrossTrail and ride until I arrive at earths end! "Hey, wait a minute. Have you gotten that far yet?" Just kidding my friend.
Take care and watch out for the crazy drivers on the roads!
We need you and others like you around to inspire us to be the best we can be! 😁
It's common to do that
Most inspiring one yet!
Thanks, Rob!
My family is from Havana I’m the first US born in our fam and I’ve never been there. I’m a recent bike fanatic and is my work out sanity which is how I found your video. I absolutely love that you all loved Cuba and your commentary was great to listen to. Makes me sad I’ve not been there yet. Will soon and hope to cycle through that type of landscape 👍🏼
You should absoutely go, whether your government allows it or not. Cycling in Cuba was one of the greatest experiences of my life!
Thank you for sharing your experience.
I am 57 years old born in Cuba but grew up in USA. I arrived in 1968 when I was 4 years old. Never returned. Had family there but all are gone my aunt passed away last year and her son came to Miami after her death.
I have always wanted to return and maybe do something like what you did. The people there are humble they will give you whatever little they have.
Again thanks
Oh wow! I hope that you can make it back someday, it's a wonderful place to ride a bike
I love how happy and excited all the people are! Giving that bike away at the end was the best. Great story and adventure Duzer!
+Gone with the Wynns Thanks, I'll meet you in Cuba when you sail there...and I promise not to give you boat away at the end of the trip :)
I dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Conrad Omar Instablaster :)
@Jamari Leroy thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Jamari Leroy it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account!
Wao, thank you! What a great documentary!!
+Anthony J. Pagan Thanks for watching!
I get it! I once got a haircut in Turkey. Still one of my favorite experiences; drinking tea, telling stories and laughing with the locals. This video reminds me of that great day! Thanks
This man has shown a new level of energy and zest for life here, which has impressed me very much. We also ride the bikes and have fun with life, but his positive mood is unimaginably great.
Thanks for watching my videos!
Just discovering this wonderful video!
Paying it forward! Bravo!
always!
Hi Ryan. You did not talk about why the woman gave you the bike? It was great seeing the joy on the man's face who received the bike. Hopefully it changed his life for good. Thank you for sharing.
Exactly what I plan for this fall .
You will love it!
2016 seems so far in the past, but yet so fresh in the memory for you, I guess Ryan!? Man!! This video makes me feel just as alive as you were back then! Thanks for sharing your excitement through Cuba and its warmhearted people!!
just want to go to Cuba Now, excellent video
Thanks, Cuba is the best
provabily the lucky guy with the bike can give bike tours :)
Thanks for the great video, I leave a bicycle in Cuba every time I go. People donate them to me and the bikes are appreciated and I use them when I am there. I hope the normalized relations with the U.S. doesn't change Cuba to much because I love it just the way it is.
Awesome! What a great place to ride a bike!
Yep, a good bike makes all the difference in your travels, especially when cycling so far. What a great adventure.
I've heard wonderful things about the people of Cuba.
+Roamancing Travel The people are so awesome!
Huge fun! Hope things settle down and more of us can make the trip!
I hope so too, it's an incredible place
I can't believe that I've been watching your videos for months now (remember I said I watched ''the great dive'' video twice?) Well, I just 'discovered that you were in Cuba. I've been living in Canada for 20 years now but you know what? You just rode 3 blocks from my house there.
What an amazing country and friendly people that make you feel welcome. I just returned from my second trip to Havana less than 12 hours ago. I am already missing it and hoping the next trip come sooner rather than later. I had great experiences in casa particulars each trip. Next trip will be out into the country on the bike.
Cuba by bike is the best!!! Viva
At least back in 2014/15 there was a Canadian guy in Havana who rented pretty decent touring bikes, it was called Canbicuba. And taking the bikes on a bus was no problem.
I did a 2 week bike trip through Cuba in 2009, ending up in Santiago de Cuba after cycling along the south coast. Good memories. I loved the basic food in the typical homestay - beans, rice, stewed chicken, and a simple salad. Couldn't ask for more. My big regret was that I speak no Spanish, and English didn't seem to be widely spoken. But really nice people, good music, and pretty much ideal cycling conditions.
I've done two rides in SE Asia, and in both cases - Cambodia and Laos/Vietnam - I bought a local bike and gave it away at the end of the trip. It's a good feeling. Bicycles are magic. :-)
Bicycles are indeed magic!
THANK YOU for the beautiful film!!!
Great video and amazing jesture at the end ..its what travelling is all about
Thanks! I'm still in touch with that guy too!
AMAZING! Cuba is a very special country! What a beautiful experience!
+Danielle Mamed SI SI SI! I love Cuba!

This was a great video! My dad loved Cuba, he frequently flew to Havana from Panama during WWII. He said it was beautiful. I can see what he was talking about from your video. It was really cool of you to give that bike to a guy who needed it. You have a kind heart Ryan.
Thanks buddy, I truly loved it. I wanna go back and ride some more. Happy 2016 my friend!
Great Documentary, loved that you were able to give the bike to someone at the end - he looked really happy and excited to get a bike. The people looked so welcoming.
Absolutely, it was an amazing moment!
Ryan you just make my tears come out watching this video, from the way that this video was shot, the editing and the voiceover it's just one word, awesome. How wonderful! I'll be in Cuba next month, you inspired me to get to know it on the bike and that's what I'll do!
Awesome! Cuba is great by bike!
I swore I would go back to Cuba after loving it so much in 2004. This wonderful video gave me a perfect blueprint to copy. Last time I have away my running shoes to a boxer on their junior national team. I hope to find a great subject to give a bike like you did ❤️
Oh Ryan, thank you so much! That's an incredible movie, i really loved it.. i would one day do as you've done, go for a ride around a country! Thank you for your inspirational message.

Thanks for watching!
Awesome video as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
Just excellent, Duzer!
Thank you fine sir!
Well done Ryan! You've inspired me
Nice, that's the goal!
in the public restrooms washing your hands was interesting. You need three things to wash your hands; water, soap, towel to dry. Well, the towel was your shirt or pants, because there never was any towels. In 1/3 of the toilets there was no water and in one case, there was a lady standing beside the sink with a bottle of water to pour over your hands. In an equal number of places, there was no soap.
If you thought not having soap and water in the restroom was a problem, imagine not having a toilet SEAT. Yep, no toilet seat and it wasn’t just confined to public facilities. One of the rooms we stayed in had no toilet seat, which was matched by the fact there was no toilet paper. In its place, somebody had carefully torn individual sheets of toilet paper from a roll and placed them on the back of the toilet.
Nice one Ryan 👍
that true. cuba es unica,, muy diferente a lo que puedas ver en otras partes de el Caribe.nice vid
+dan nlop gracias amigo! Es cierto que Cuba es diferente, un lugar inolvidable!

What a cool video. Awesome stuff. Really enjoyed watching your movies from the Baja divide as well. One question: How can you stomach so many Burritos with beans? :D :D Good luck and looking forward for your future adventures!
Thanks for watching! I love bean burritos, and luckily have never gotten sick of them :) Stay tuned for more (burritos and adventures)
My homeland
What a trip! Curious to know how you navigated your way around the country? also, how did you know which house had an available room for the night?
Ryan, do this again, but as a daily extended version.
I should!
"Come on bro hurry up,I have a cold and can get wet" is what the guy said in the beginning.
haha, totally!
Hey Ryan, amazing video dude. I'm planning on riding from Cayo Coco to Varadero (430kms) this October/November. Any tips about the route? Cheers and wish you tail winds
Tienes que hacerlo de nuevo, ahora si que esta difícil hacerlo :(
Ryan, my son and I are going to the orient alone and ride for 20 days just us. I am bringing with me my baseball mitt and bunch of balls. My goal is to play some pick-up games there gringo con los Cubanitos. That'll be my nirvana loving life in the rural towns.
I learned off of you and a bunch of other people to just bring a light bike bag and carry it with me instead of this stress carton. Can you tell me what was the panniers that you used in this trip? Would you have brought something with you that you overlooked? Can I assume you didn't have a rain coat? Gracias ....Mark
Good morning Ryan ,thanks for your videos,I'm CUBAN,I live in san antonio TEXAS and me and my friends we are planning a road trip from San antonio to miami Florida ur are welcome we planning to live san antonio on November 1 2019 by the way I'm going to get a new bike for this ride, what type and brand will u recommend to me,again thank you
Excellent :)
Hi Ryan it's Adam. Sals son.
I will take that 15 mph with a grain of salt.
Ryan, I am hoping to bike across Cuba this coming January. I am having a difficult time finding anyone with information on how to do this. Would you be willing to talk by phone or answer a few questions? What is the best way to enter Cuba? Any sense on safety in 2023? etc. Brett from Minnesota
Great video man, could you tell me how did you pay for groceries and drinks in the road? with dollars or local money? also, how did you find the accomodation? thanks!
I used local money, found casas particulares by searching out the symbol on people’s doors
Possible to ride a road bike with small tires there?
Yeah, some of the roads are pretty beat up, but you could pull it off...thicker tires would be better though
how was the ride i have a rise and muller delite e bike with 2 batters 1000w i plan to take my boat a 40 ft nordhavn to cuba and bike ride how are the roads there and the heat i plan to travel there feb 2019 for a month
nice video! why do they not have nice bikes, is it because of us embargo?
Will a folding bike be ok to do small trips between towns? any suggestion? Great video!!
totally! That would work just fine. Just make sure to have your own parts, cause there will be no parts in Cuba for a folding bike.
+Ryan Van Duzer Great, dude! What towns do you recomend to cycle in between?
Cant stop watching your videos!!
tcdp there's so many awesome towns, Trinidad is cool, barbacoa...you can't go wrong. You are gonna love it!
That will do ok, then. Been there twice and never left Havana, next year I can`t sumply miss be on the road and try something new. I will get sure to carry bike parts and few tools. cheers!!
You forgot to explain why Margaret gave you that bike. Or maybe I just missed it... :-)
She gave it to me with the simple idea of giving it away, she's a sweetie!
awesome video from The beautiful Island Cuba, , thank you! What a great documentary!! I wanna go to Cuba and make a bike ride. please can you send me info of a place to stay ? thanks again . Me facino la Isla esta hermosa , alguien ayude con lugar para quedarse y un mapa para paseo en bici?
Hi Ryan, what month did you do this trip?
November
I honestly had no idea Americans were permitted in Cuba. Prevented by the US Govt not Cuba. Or was that just American flights?
The US Gov makes it hard, not Cuba. Weird
@@duzer ancient history hanging on, eh!? Sad. So glad you got there. An amazing place w anazing people!
Also did u pass by Sancti Spiritus
I did! love all of cuba
Cuba produces some Olympic-Level cyclists.
Thanks for the great video. I'm planning a similar trip. If you don't mind may I ask a few questions.
#1 Why would one not rent a bike from a local company such as www.ciclocuba.com/ They seem to have a fleet of pretty nice bikes, perhaps this is a new development since your trip a year and a half ago?
#2 When you flew from Colorado to Cuba did they charge you one fee to take the bike the whole way? Would it have made a difference if you flew to miami Obtained a Bike There and brought it from there? Or Same Fee?
#3 If you were traveling with sombody might it be worth it to combine two bikes in one box?
#4 WOuld you consider brining a beloved bike both ways?
#5 Were you able to make some easy detours into jungles and coral reef beaches or was this impractical by bike.
#6 Is there a good coast-side route at times?
#7 Is it pretty easy to find places to stay? Would you consider bringing a tent.
Would greatly appreciate any advice.
THanks
HI!!!
When I went, I couldn't find any places to rent...but that would certainly make it easier. I had to pay to take my bike from Denver to cancun, and then another charge from cancun to havana. Two bikes in one box would be very difficult. You can take detours ALL over the place, easy! Plenty of coastal riding too! It's super easy to find places to stay, almost every town has a Casa Particular where people rent out rooms from their homes. Have fun!
Thanks could I ask one more question. Did you fly direct from US to Cuba with the bike & if so was there any issue with the Obtaining the proper card. As I understand it you are "not to have excessive free time there & the itinerary should be written out" I'm concerned that by bringing a bike they might consider that a red flag for excessive free time.
I flew from Denver to Cancun, then got on another airline from cancun to Havana. They didn't ask one single question at the airport in havana...it's super easy to get in. Getting the visa card in cancun was easy, just walked up to the airline counter and bought it.
@@jonschickman7561 Cuban authorities will not stamp US passports unless you specifically ask for it because they know it can get you into trouble.
Box too big
faut etre completement fou mais super fou meme en voiture faire cette route c est de la merde
This guy comes across as too in your face. Kind of more an ego trip or maybe just the UA-cam be cheery to attract viewers model of presentation.
What can I say? That Cuban countryside makes me so HAAAAAAAPPPPPYYYYYY
Gday Ryan! Watching this video in preparation for riding a horse or Hinny across Cuba. Would absolutely love to get in contact with you, do you have email or instagram?
Yep, crazyduzer@gmail.com
