- Didn't think we'd make it through this heat wave (that's still ongoing) in Merida. It's been rough and we had no power for 3 straight nights!!

@@CartessRoss I used to live in Homun- for a month or two, two years ago. Actually I was living in Chelem, but went to Homun for a month or two. I think it was two months.
Anyways, one day the atm in the center was down- still down two years later, but they have some new/other banks now. Someone said I could go to the atm in Acanceh or Hocaba. I had been to Acanceh a few times, so I said let me see what's going on in Hocaba. Atm ended up being on the outskirts so I never actually saw the town.
Then when I was looking to leave Chelem and couldn't find a place I remembered that atm trip. I came to Hocaba and found a house the same day.
It's atrocious.

Only thing I don't like is that sometimes the air quality is trash! My neighbor burns chemicals, etc. I've been told to report him to the police but I know that's a waste of time. May only lead to problems with neighbor. They are actually two streets away, but it's so strong I have to close my windows and doors and have something under the doors when they burn. Can't even go into the yard. NUTS! I didn't come to Mexico for this. 🤣
But I finally went and spoke to him- nicely 🤣- yesterday and he said he won't burn anymore. Fingers crossed! I had a peaceful day yesterday and today.
Also, one day when I was walking at night- a few streets away- it seemed like all the people were cooking plastic for dinner! The smell was that strong! I've walked several times at night and that's the only time I've noticed the smells that strong elsewhere.
And I do live in the "jungle" side of Hocaba, not in the center/downtown.
I've been looking for a place elsewhere- mostly because of the burning, plus I think the kind of people I want to meet here are mostly in Merida. Anyways I also looked in elsewhere- small towns- and places I found not exactly what I want. I didn't want to take just any place so that's why I went to talk to the neighbor to buy myself time.
Overall I feel "at home"- somewhat- in Hocaba. The people know me and seem to like me. And it's beautiful here! Lots of open land! And there's Homun- with over 300 public cenotes- not far away. Just take a mototaxi for 80 pesos. And other cool small towns/villages like Hoctun, Sanachat, etc. nearby. If you haven't visited Hoctun check it out! It's such a vibe! Small town with cool calligraphy in the center, etc.
@@CartessRoss oh, and Hocaba is known for fireworks! I didn't know that before moving here. All of a sudden "BOOM!"💥 even at 6 am! Apparently my neighbor is into that! And he shoots his gun early in the morning too!
And it's not just in the jungle here either! I was in town getting water one evening and "BOOM!" above my head! Was surprised! I asked the mototaxi where it came from, and to take me there, because I wanted to be sure it wasn't near two houses I was looking to switch to, and it was! 🤣 And he pointed out more houses near those houses where he said they do fireworks.
There are these beautiful silver trees here that apparently fireworks are made from!
Apparently other people know about the fireworks and Hocaba. I was in Merida two days ago and in a small store near San Benito- to get away from the heat! Stayed there for a couple of hours chatting with a bunch of cool guys- the owner, etc. When I mentioned "Hocaba" a bus driver there said "veladores" (I think that's the word, for fireworks)! 🤣
Back to my earlier air quality comment, Homun- in my experience- has good air quality. Going around on a mototaxi at night and the air is crisp! I had a neighbor burn occasionally, but nothing like here in Hocaba!
It’s hot as hell here in Thailand. Thank God I live a block away from the Beach.

That's why I moved to Bucerias in the Riviera Nayarit just north of Puerto Vallarta because the max temperature is usually no more than 89 to 91 Fahrenheit during the hottest time of year with a cool ocean breeze also.
The last week it's been running only 88° and no power outages in this part of Mexico along the middle Pacific coast.
Summer is still a month away.....

Great advise, thank u and appreciate your feedback. I've been pressing those daughters of mine to make more stuff... When they run out of money, they typically come back with ideas for videos lol ...Merida is hot. The culture in the Yucatan is very different from other parts of Mexico from what I hear from others; it's not an easy place to live. Regarding photography, Kim has stopped shooting photos for about 4 or 5 years now (she stopped a year or so prior to coming to Mexico). I'll let her comment more on that.
The power outage had been all over the news in Mexico, it is not only a Yucatan problem lately, it had been a problem lately nation wide

Nah, we live in PDC we haven't had outages like this. Some parts of the city went out for a few hours maybe. But our area did not go out at ALL. And it's hot asf here. So not ALL over the country

Solar is the answer for low electric bill, but it's still connected to the grid. When power gets shut off, we lose access. Apparently, back-up batteries are the answer for when power goes out, but apparently backup batters cost more than the solar system

A cheap and simple backup battery for a system with solar pannels cost around 20,000 usd in Merida (approximately 320,000 mexican pesos) and that is the cheapest one. Not something everyone can afford and keep in mind it has only a very limited capacity and durability.
Some of my neighbors had generators in their driveways about the size of a small car ... And looked like all of the lights in their houses were turned on.... Even saw lights on in the back while they were out enjoying the pool ... I was like, 'I need one of those', lol

Buenos Tardes, Cartess y Familia. I noticed most UA-camrs in my stream are talking about the intense heat and power outages in the Merida area. My homebase is in Colorado Springs and here, it snowed yesterday and a little bit today mixed with rain. I plan on visiting Mexico in the wintertime ... but this year, I'm visiting San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Ya'll stay hydrated and enjoy the swimming pool. Take Care & God Bless.

You have a portable battery for small appliances and like fans and lights. Backup batteries usually will keep the whole house running for a couple days.

If you have natural gas, get a tri-fuel or duel-fuel generator that will run off of gasoline, natural gas, and/or propane.. but natural gas is the way to go if the house is equipped with it already.

You can buy a camping battery to run your CPAP around $50 so not as expensive as solar

cartess, if you can find a wrecked tesla you can grab the battery out of that to use as a backup battery :)
also, you are looking for Lithium batteries. 100 amp hour or more, you will need to buy several of those and connect them together. you will also need a charge controller and and inverter to change the power from 12 or 24 volt... to house voltage. at least enough to power 1 air conditioner and your refrigerator

@@MoveAbroadandThrive when you are researching you will search for off-grid solar power. your system is known as grid-tie, meaning it is tied to the grid. you can have both, but not connected together. safety mainly. if your power is running through the lines when the lineman is expecting everything to be off, well you get the point.
Here's a trick that I learned from a long-time Merida resident ... put a floor fan on full blast, and a ceiling fan on full blast, and keep your windows open. Her home was designed with brick walls that did not finish at the roof line. Old Hacienda style mansion. The floor fan pushes up the hot air and pushes it outside. It actually works ... along with sitting still and drinking a cold beverage!! Good Luck!

I'm on the other side, we had 1 outage for 4 hours. The "spicy" hotels are great for times like this 😅 you can pay by the hour , check in/ out anytime .

We've been lucky in our privada so far. Power goes out most days but comes back on between 1-3 hours. 🤞🏼Hope that trend continues throughout rainy season.
I know that you would like to build a house there, solar panels are great to have from what I hear as long as you have batteries to store the power. My father-in-law has a whole house generator that turns on within seconds of the power going out ($5,000 in Michigan). Obviously a portable generator would be ideal in your current situation, enough to keep the fridge running, and fans or a mini-split. I would imagine that your pool isn't refreshing when it's that hot out either. I'm glad you are hanging tough!
I’m used to summers being over 115 from living in Los Angeles but I’m not used to the humidity…how would I do in Merida? I’m visiting Costa Maya and Cozumel on a cruise for my birthday at the end of the month, wonder what type of weather I’ll get there. I went in September of 2022 and it was hot and humid but i was okay, but didn’t go outside much aside from port days. Didn’t really get to use my balcony because of the heat, but didn’t get upgraded this time.
It does sound frustrating that the generators are so expensive. Does the power go out very often there?

the only time solar is worth it is if you have a stand alone system with batteries and a generator:) We had that in Hawaii and it works well but we don't have that kind of heat either. You just convinced me NOT to move to Merida:) I was just thinking about it today after watching your older video and I said what if the power goes out, how will doggie and I survive? and here you are:) where I live if the power goes out doesn't matter bc it is mild or chilly (but not cold) year round.
Whew. Definitely need a contingency plan if one is gonna live here. If we build or buy, a quality, big generator will definitely be top of list.
I live in San Diego, California the temperature is 74 degrees. Our electricity is expensive but at least we don’t have power outages.

That's a good thing for sure, but if everything I have been hearing about California is true, cost of living, homeless, crime, and even big businesses have moved out because of high taxes, Cali is not the place to be. The negatives greatly outweigh the few positives.

I’ve worked in 14 different states in the past 10 years and stayed in each state at least 2 months each. I can tell you the part of California I live in is fantastic. I can tell you the income taxes are not high, I don’t see crime. In San Diego county you can find a 55 and over community for a reasonable price. My property taxes for the year are $1,260.00. I talked to a person who lives in Illinois and his property taxes are $18,000.00 a year. One other thing I know people who live in Tijuana, Mexico which is next door to San Diego. Check out North Country San Diego

Been here in Merida since May '23 and haven't had AC the whole time. This recent heat wave has been really intense. I've been taking like 20 quick showers a day. And too many beers too but the heat. They're saying the pattern is changing with La Nina but that won't be until middle of June. Pray that rain comes soon!

Look into Cholula, Puebla. It's 2 hours outside Mexico City and in the mountains. There is an active volcano, and very few English speakers, but it has a milder climate and is a very cool town.

@@MoveAbroadandThrive yes, lol but it's not 111! The ash bothered me, but it wouldn't everyone. It's a very beautiful town, the most beautiful I saw on my 6 month journey around Mexico. And very inexpensive. Of course I still chose Merida because of the culture and community. I'll be there in August for a year lease., and I can't wait! First thing I'll do is plan a trip to the mountains for next May!

I live in Cholula, Mexico we moved here in February from Cabo San Lucas we love it here we got a great deal on a brand new house 3 bedroom 3.5 bathrooms grated community we love it here, and it is not very hot or humid
would it hurt you all to consider one of the carribean islands possibly cooler i really appreciate what you have done for mexico i actually made a trip there last year and will be coming in october for help with my channel , i really do love your channel and your family, but possibly consider one of the islands the work you do, may be appreciated even more there.

That happens here in Hocaba too, where some areas will have power and the others won't! Ughh! Normally it seems to be my area without power.
One time the power was out from night until about 2 pm the next day! It takes a lot of mental strength! 🤣
These kinds of things I think happen mostly in villages/small towns. Like Hocaba, maybe Conkal, etc. Happened when I lived in Homun too. Power out all day once or twice. It didn't happen when I lived in different parts of Merida. Only once in Chelem.
Your mental game gotta be tight for real... I almost folded by day 3, lol ... But I realize it's temporary ... Even with these outages, I'd still rather stay out here from the city. I've never been to Hocaba. I may have to come check it out. How do u like it?

Will houses in Merida were constructed differently before with very thick walls, tall ceilings and doors to allow the heat to rise up, houses were kept fresh that way.
I don't have to get hit by a truck to know that it hurts!! You can keep Merida!! The central mountain area is better temperature wise!! You are correct, no place is perfect!!

I imagine the electric bills are high in Merida. I previously lived in Cabo San Lucas where it is also hot and humid. Moved to Cholula Puebla where I do not need ac or heat. Saving bank.
My electric bill in Baja Norte was $15.00us for two months. My friends in Oaxaca spent $320us for two months and it isn't even summer yet. $300us buys groceries and street tacos for a month.
Great public service announcement. My first experience with the first week of June cemented my never being able to survive living there full time. Asthmatic here. High heat & dry=no problemo. High heat & high humidity = I really Could.Not.Breathe. Had to leave. Or die, basically. People need to know that May 15-Sept 30 is pretty unbearable...Sept rains bring October mosquitoes...so for me,,, Nov - end of March is fine.

You've just described my reason to pick the end of May to the middle of June to visit Merida, México. Which the warmest months in Merida. To see if it is similar to coastal Georgia weather. It is similar.
That said, I'm staying in El Centro where I'm within walking distance to several good restaurants, and parks, especially after sunset. Mercado San Benito is also nice.
So far, Merida seems doable. But, it's only been 2 days out of 21days. Time will tell. 😅

Yep. I'm in Ensenada and today was the hottest day of the year so far at a sunny 70 with a forecast low of 56 tonight. The cool ocean water keeps the weather nice here year round.

Forecast highs for the for the next seven days in Merida is between 101 to 107F. For the same period in Cancun it will average 89 to 91F. I'll only ever go to Merida during winter. Go get that generator. Thanks for the heads up Cartess.
It wont get better. It will get worse year after year. Asia (Thailand) and all other tropical locations will experience increasingly dangeorus heat waves and outages. Climate effect in action. People really are not prepared for this.
It might be manageable in places like Aruba that have constant trade winds blowing through them
Yes, you need a battery bank for solar to hold power. Basically, having solar without power storage is useless (imo) You are also correct, solar is generally not meant to power entire house, it a emergency thing, ie a/c in 115 degree weather and cpap. The necessities. You can however get something like a Tesla power wall, large enough to run house. The type of solar you explained, where you share with the grid, are a ripoff, they may reduce bill, but they are pretty useless when in an emergency (unless you have some sort of power storage). I want all of my power for myself and family. However, companies like Ecoflow makes portable solar air conditioners which will cool at least a single room. I have a portable solar generator for something like my cpap. It will run for about 24 hours without charging, depending on load. If needed, I could use my portable solar panels to charge it back the next day. Mine is a Bluetti, but my next one will be EcoFlow. While looking for a generator, I would focus on a dual fuel generator, they can take gasoline, or propane.

Have you thought about a small generator with solar panels at least for your machine. It could be also for your cell phones. I’m researching for one myself and I’m not sure what kind to get BUT I know I need to get some type of generator.

Buy yourself a battery pack. You can run a small AC & your cpap . Cool one room.
This is worldwide, even in the USA the heat is so bad, that's why we are having many tornadoes etc.
a) Most long term gringos in Mexico live in the mountains. b) Best use for your daytime solar power is running a fan. This reduces the Apparent Heat that your body feels by 5-10 degrees. c) Sleep in your birthday suit, under the fan, in the afternoon. In real hot places, like Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, where I used to live, a significant percentage of my neighbors were Entirely Nocturnal. So keep Vampire Hours.

When I used to live in South America, I would use a plastic cover for the bed and sleep and wet clothes with the fan. It would keep me cool so I could sleep all night. Or I would run two large fans. 😅
That's a great idea! On the 3rd day i did drape a wet towel on top of me and slept like a baby on night 3 (minus the awful snoring) lol

It's true the backup batteries don't last long. I've seen a cellphone company and internet company that will have a room with about 50 batteries the size the of a car battery. And it keeps the system on for 15 min so people don't lose service. It's just enough to kick up the generators. They have big diesel generators. But they make small generators. That could be the answer is buying a small generator. I have an A/C converter for my cordless drill battery and it will power my laptop or charge my phone for a couple hours. It would work on a cpap machine but definitely not an air conditioner.
Oh my goodness! I'll be visiting Merida for the first time in July. Do you have any tips and or suggestions please.
Dress lightly cause it's hot as hades round here ... Drink plenty of fluids so u don't dehydrate. Wear sunscreen. I have a few other things I recommend and suggest. Yeah, I'm gonna have to take a pass on living in Merida. When "regular hot" is "just" 102 or 103 degrees and with high humidity on top of that, I know that's not the place for me!

Definitely. A few neighbors had some out... I even saw some in our neighborhood with 'Rent Us' signs on them. I'll have better planned options before this weekend is over. I won't get caught slipping again

Yep, and the weather report also gives you a "Feels Like" temp because of the humidity. Today (May 19) it was 105 with a "Feels Like" of 114+. It's forecast to be 107 by the end of the week.....

Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to get much better. It's going to be hot, and the more people who move there, the more the electrical grid will be stressed.

Could you all have gone to a mall, restaurant or coffee shop all day? I love the heat but not prolonged like that. I was planning to move to Merida but I’ve decided to move to Kenya instead. However, last week they had unprecedented rains and floods throughout the country that caused many dams to burst with ragging waters that swept away roads and homes while ppl were sleeping. Utter disaster with over 200 ppl dead and multiple thousands displaced with no where and nothing to return to. Unfortunately, the majority of farmers also lost their crops and livestock as well. It was caused by climate change and poor infrastructure, even in the wealthier counties. Looks like there’s no idyllic place to live anymore.
Yea... seems no place is perfect, and every place will have it's 'issues', but overall, I still love it here... We could have gone to the mall, but much of the outage happened in the evening and carried through the night.
