    Get the car up to scratch, head lining, radio, wing mirrors, little bit of body work, wheel refurb then maybe some overland additions - chunky rubber, roof rack, few videos and trips and then auction it off. I think that’d be a great series, something different and maybe get your money back if not make a bit. 👍🏻

      Completely agree with the above idea. It would be well worth getting the spares online and trying to get everything working. Nothing like a car in this shape to develop car repair/build knowledge and experience.

    It's a shame the sound system isn't working - that should be the top Dolby Prologic II system, which was absolutely banging back in the 00s, and still would be great by modern standards. At the Volvo dealership we had a demo CD with various sound clips on it, (including things like a jet taking off and a train whizzing by) which was played (only on the Dolby Prologic cars) to impress customers.

      Bad for leaking under the floor from grommets under the scuttle panel. Then it leaks water down behind the carpet and under the floor. The drivers side floor is where the amp sits.

    Hi Joel, I had an 04 D5 SE 10 years ago, but I was lucky enough not to have any of the usual problems (non working hifi and memory seats that have a mind of their own...). The hifi system is great when it works, can take 6 CDs, the heated seats are fantastic in the winter (setting one is HOT and the second one sets your arse on fire lol). You may find if you get the fibre optic working that there will be many issues that come up on the dash - the rear parking sensors like to work when they feel like it but enjoy, it's a great engine with a great snarl when you floor it but it's not fast and watch out when exiting junctions, it needs a bit of time to spool the torque converter up!

    The ABS light is probably a wheel sensor, which is very simple to change. The first switch with the light sign on it is a disable for the internal alarm sensor, so you can lock the car and only have the external triggers set, if you have a dog in the car for instance.

    Not sure if the Volvo systems are similar but I’ve got a fibre optic system in my BMW. If you unplug various components you can see the light flashing in the plugs. No light means there’s an issue further down the line. A decent wiring diagram is needed too.

    I drove one for 2 years and it was great! Paid £3k for 180k miler which I then sold at 220k The only problem I had which I found out is very common is the auto gearbox (made by Aisin Warner) suffers from clunky/jolting gear change issues. A lot of people believe it's because Volvo said it's sealed for life and never needs servicing. Toyota use the same gearbox but the service states the oil must be changed every so many thousand miles! My one had the same factory cabled car phone built in! The ringtone if someone called was Greensleeves 😂I loved how comfortable the seats were and swear that car cured my bad back! The pop up sat nav was at such a weird angle it was hard to look at it! Volvo claim noone has ever died in one. Sometimes a bad fuse, bulb out or dead head unit can cause issues with the most system.

  • @kieraz10
    @kieraz10 11 місяців тому +1

    The info system as you said runs off and optical system. I recommend buying an optical bypass and disconnect each module one at a time and plug the bypass in until you see it power up. My v50 had the same issue and it turned out to be the iPod module had corrosion on the pins. Otherwise cracking car plenty of life in it once the few bits are sorted. I am a massive Volvo fan and have had many some love them and some hate them but all the issues these cars are common problems and are shared. Looking forward to more content.

    • @itsjoel
      @itsjoel  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the tip, I've checked all the fuses etc and have inspected the optical connections for red lights, but like you've suggested i've ordered an optical bypass. When I plug in the optical bypass and something powers up, does that mean that it is not the system causing the issue?

    • @kieraz10
      @kieraz10 11 місяців тому

      @@itsjoel you need to check all the modules one by one to the point where the red optical light does not shine back out of the module which breaks the link. The bypass allows the optical light to continue on to the next module. You could have a burned out module but you need to find the diagram on Google showing where all the modules are. I have some for the v50 as an example if you wish me to share by email.

    I think you should get the audio working - Volvo factory systems are absolutely cracking. I think there are more modules in the boot (under the side windows) and they can get damp. Usual procedure is to remove them from the loop one at a time.

  • @Parknest
    @Parknest 11 місяців тому

    I own a 2003 XC90 and they're generally quite bulletproof. The ABS problem is most likely the sensor. Another likely culprit is the ABS ring whic necessitates the removal of the driveshaft. The CEM (Central Electric Module) can be prone to acting up but the good news is that they can be repaired. Volvo Diagnostic in Tilbury offers a module repair service and if the module is beyond repair they can supply reconditioned ones a lot cheaper than new ones. The Volvo forums are a wealth of knowledge. There are a few channels (mine included) with helpful Volvo content.

    Worth a punt at that price. I see the MOT is due in 2 weeks! SO first, I would go for a long drive and get something out of it. Then get the MOT done and see what it tells you. All being well, if you think you are going to keep it, try and find out when the cambelt was last done, and if you cant find out, or it is overdue, get it done. Or... you could just wing it. It is a lot of car, but like other cars of this age, if you spend money on it, you probably won't get it back. So have a bit of fun, then sell it on.... because I am sure you would get more than your money back.. . if it passes the MOT.... and even if it doesn't get your drive in now first, then absolute worst case, if it did fail the MOT, you can sell it for almost breakeven...

    I have a '08 D5 Summum since 7 years back. If the transmission, Haldex and rear differential are ok then this can be saved. But keep in mind that this is not a drivers car even when everything works

    So. I’ve was a test engineer at Volvo cars and worked a tone with these cars. Your instrument cluster get its data via CAN. Not the via optic (MOST). The radio display, ICM users both MOST and CAN. So I would start by verifying that you have 12v to that. If not, you would get this errors.

    I do admire your optimism but, I couldn’t live with the level of work required to put this right! Cheap indeed but, it needs a re spray, much work inside and out and none of it will be cheap!

    Have you bought the car as a real project or just as a load lugger ?
    I would spent as little as possible just to keep it running and pass the MOT. That would be a brilliant bangernomics story. Music? Use your phone with a separate bluetooth speaker! DO IT ON THE CHEAP! Really going to enjoy this story - good luck!

    I had one of these back in 2009 in the same colour. Magic Blue Pearl I think? Wondering why your side indicators are on the wings? Supposed to be on the doors?

    • @cmartin_ok
      @cmartin_ok 11 місяців тому

      I think the side repeater indicators moved in 2005/2006 to the door mirrors. My dad bought a late 2004 V70 (2005 MY) and the repeaters ore on the side strip. The following MY they were moved to the mirrors

      @@cmartin_ok I think I remember that. But I’ve never seen them high on the wing. Either on the door on the front of the rubbing strip or the wing mirror as you say.
