Dozens of lawmakers stormed out of Britain's parliament on Wednesday with tempers flaring as the three biggest political parties sought to outmanoeuvre each other over a vote on a ceasefire in Gaza. The uproar followed a decision by the speaker to ignore precedent and allow a vote which helped the opposition Labour Party avoid a large-scale rebellion among its own lawmakers over its position on the Israel-Hamas war. Lawmakers from the governing Conservatives and the opposition Scottish National Party (SNP) left the debating chamber in protest and some tried to take the rare step of holding proceedings in private. The speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, eventually apologised and said he had made his decision to allow lawmakers to vote on a range of views because he was concerned about their security after some had faced threats of violence over their stance on the war.

UK parliament descends into chaos over Gaza ceasefire vote. 22.2.24 0917am Some vast convoluted cosmic joke I didn't get. I watched the comedy show new statesman as a lad - with interest.... In reference to that old timey classic - and some high handed espionage - I am thinking someone slipped some amended notes into your highly polished notes about the amendments to the vote you all wanted to amend should the vote take place which merely meant the government's amendment would need be dealt with as Starmer (der sturmer) and co. agreed, anyway...even though they were the only ones who got to vote due the highly contentious stringing out of a heap load of b.s... so they could all get last bus home, thus missing the vote...and the government were last seen in in pub, heads in hands, exclaiming: ohhhh nooooo..we might have to do some work, mean what we say............a puerile response to a puerile response to a set of consumer conscious dictates ie: they're all thinking about their arms deals and contracts.... i than' yow.

Has there ever been a bigger disconnect between the system and the people? On issues that British people do have serious and justified concerns about, politicians do nothing. They need to be removed and replaced with people who do want to deal with the real issues we face asap for all our sakes.

What unfolded in the House of Commons yesterday shamed the UK.
Our politicians chose to play politics as a game of arcane procedure, completely losing sight of the human dimension and cost: what is actually happening in the Israel/Hamas conflict in Gaza.
No they didn't. The only people playing games were Starmer, Hoyle and the Labour Party.

Labour black mailed the speaker of the house so he would change how things are normally done to save their face and essentially stop Scotland from getting its say
My understanding is that the SNP gets a set number of days when it can debate a motion as the third largest party and they made one calling for an immediate ceasefire and accusing Israel of collective punishment (a war crime which no future Labour government would want to be accusing Israel of for diplomatic reasons) which half of labour would vote for and split the party. The speaker allowed Labour to have a vote to amend the motion to say that there should be a ceasefire where Israel can't be expected to cease fighting if violence from hamas will continue and cut out the collective punishment bit. If the amendment is passed then the SNP motion is fully replaced and it isn't really an SNP opposition day at all because it's the Labour motion that gets voted on at the end.
This is something that hasn't happened since the '90s.
The SNP motion: "That this House calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel; notes with shock and distress that the death toll has now risen beyond 28,000, the vast majority of whom were women and children; further notes that there are currently 1.5 million Palestinians sheltering in Rafah, 610,000 of whom are children; also notes that they have nowhere else to go; condemns any military assault on what is now the largest refugee camp in the world; further calls for the immediate release of all hostages taken by Hamas and an end to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people; and recognises that the only way to stop the slaughter of innocent civilians is to press for a ceasefire now."
The Labour amendment that would override it:
"That this House believes that an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences and therefore must not take place; notes the intolerable loss of Palestinian life, the majority being women and children; condemns the terrorism of Hamas who continue to hold hostages; supports Australia, Canada and New Zealand’s calls for Hamas to release and return all hostages and for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, which means an immediate stop to the fighting and a ceasefire that lasts and is observed by all sides, noting that Israel cannot be expected to cease fighting if Hamas continues with violence and that Israelis have the right to the assurance that the horror of 7 October 2023 cannot happen again; therefore supports diplomatic mediation efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire; demands that rapid and unimpeded humanitarian relief is provided in Gaza; further demands an end to settlement expansion and violence; urges Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures; calls for the UN Security Council to meet urgently; and urges all international partners to work together to establish a diplomatic process to deliver the peace of a two-state solution, with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state, including working with international partners to recognise a Palestinian state as a contribution to rather than outcome of that process, because statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people and not in the gift of any neighbour."

The power of the Israeli lobby is far reaching in British politics
They are looking for a way out so as to not offend there masters. Their masters are not the British people but like the US the powerful lobbies.
A way to weaken these power structures is to be mindful where you spend your money. It may seem a bargain at first but they will get it back through the tax system.

Maybe I’m missing something but why are we discussing GAZA at all ? It’s nothing to do with us and we should keep our nose out. We are not a global power and have a tiny army smaller than Finland.
How many other countries sit in their parliament worrying about what is going on here ? I’m sure none. We have huge problems here with massive debts and are heading to the IMF. And yet our Politicians are more worried about other nations than ours, no wonder we are in the mess we are in.

Question from a Dane to every Brit who can answer:
In Denmark, when there is a vote for the parliament, the different regions of the country divides the number of representatives according to the votes cast in the respective constituency - as I understand it, in GB, it is "winner takes all" in the constituancies, meaning a 51/49 vote split could send ALL of the representatives to the 51 percent party (correct me if I'm wrong).
My question is: How has this not been changed long ago? It doesn't seem very democratic in the sense that the parliament is supposed to reflect the opinion of the people, as this paves the way for a party only getting like 40 percent public backing nationally and STILL ends up having a majority in parliament
The same goes for the US btw, but as I understand it, the American system is based on the British

@@jensasbjrnbgen4038our system is similar to that of Belarus. In the sense that proportional representation is very minor. Yes. It is almost a winner takes all, as not every constituency has the same sort of power as others. This is why tactical voting is so common.
There was a coalition government of the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats in 2010. The Liberal Democrats were promised a referendum on proportional representation (the Danish system you described). However, what was offered in the referendum was an overcomplicated cop-out. Anyway, the people voted against it. Our unfair system favours the Conservatives the most and Labour to a lesser extent (at least compared to less popular parties who have no chance of winning a seat). I think this is why Conservative and Labour governments are quite happy to leave the system unchanged. It's undemocratic and my vote is wasted if I don't vote for either Labour or the Tories in my constituency.

And even more interesting that the people actually votes against it, but from what you're describing, it sounds like the reason for the "no" was that it was very difficult to figure out the proposed new system, and therefore people maybe got afraid and chose to stick to what they know?
