- Soon Polish humanitarian hero Irena Sendler will have her statue unveiled at Newark’s Fountain Gardens on London Road, at a small COVID-secure ceremony.
Irena was part of a network of workers and volunteers of mostly women who smuggled Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto.
It is estimated that Irena, who passed away in May 2008, saved many hundreds of Jewish children.
Lili Pohlmann, a holocaust survivor and one of Irena's last living friends spoke to Polish Cultural Institute in London about her experiences with Irena and how she helped saved so many.
