I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic).The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies.
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute @ you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born.
At minute @ you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated.

Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space.
The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means:
Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity.
So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state.
So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation.
One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem.
Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything).
The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world).
This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere.
The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way.
When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteeth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way).
So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else".
That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song.
The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore.
This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore.
We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore.
It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking.
Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄

I love that you are giving us your perspective as music video producers. We may disagree about how great Rammstein is (they are the best band EVER lol) but I think we can all agree that they are very, very good at making music videos that are insanely high quality and mind blowingly impressive. On a personal note, I feel like the blonde guy here would look soo much better with Till's hair style. 😆
Well they are without a doubt very good, their sound just doesn't really do much for me (the blonde guy), that doesn't take away from the craftsmanship at all though.

Many of Rammstein's videos are absolutely outstanding.
You guys need more subs! This video blows most people's minds and the NDA with it, honestly probably cost them an easy 7-8mil dollar range to make. It might be the most expensive music video ever made. But, with all that it included, historically, wardrobes, effects, it is easy to see why. Beautifully shot, amazing video, continuing to add to Rammstein's collection of accomplishments.

I am absolutely with you on this one. I actually was suggesting it when they did the "Zeit" video. There are 2 version (original and piano). And I think a back to back reaction - or two reactions in a rather short time span would be great. It will be easier to understand the relation and references between the two videos. And then, of course, "Mein Herz brennt" is also awesome to watch in one of their live performances as well.

As I hardly read that in comments about "Deutschland" -the black actress represents Germania - which you can see als the collective soul of germany - in the different scenes she represents the mood and the ideology of germany in that current era. In the prison scene, which is propably in the 20s with hyper inflation, she represents the rising militarism, in the nazi scenes, she represents the nationalism of germany - which is placed extreamly good, as she is blind on the left eye, and only can see with the right one, also the stiff neck shows that she cannot get other perspectives. In the roman scene in the beginning, she cuts off that roman soldiers head - which is imho representing the defeat of the roman troups at the varus battle - but later kissing it, as the germanic people started trading with the romans. Also showing her as an east german officer obviously partying represents the east german feeling. Most iconic is in my opinion the scene where she is held hostage - which represents the german autumn in the 70s when the left extremist red army fraction held germany hostage. The scene with the priests show as catholism eats up germany.
This whole video is so full of symbolism, you can watch it over and over and find always something new.

12:56 Specter Berlin is a German director, Rap producer and founder of Germany's biggest "Gangster Rap" record labels in the 2000s.
"Zeit" was directed by Robert Gwisdek aka. "Käptn Peng", also a German rapper. Not at all Gangster Rap though, Wikipedia calls it "Alternative Hip Hop" and I guess that's a broad enough definition to kind of describe it. Both philosophical and comedy lyrics and a live band "Käptn Peng & die Tentakel von Delphi".

By far, this is the best. It really resonates with people regardless of national origin with the line, "Will dich leiben und verdammen" (I want to love you and damn you) when speaking of their country. The production is straight up badass and, at least for Germany, they held no punches. So much history compressed into a single video. The most interesting thing was how the Catholic Cardinal helped birth a wolf from the loins of the woman embodying Germany, which is a reference to how the Catholic Church helped Hitler rise to power. Very very good job from such an amazing group
I really like your reaction video. It brings a whole new information layer to me about the video. The only possible reason why your video has "only" 100k views is that you're more than just "fashionably late" to the party. So that clearly means you've got to get really into depth and provide a 1hour breakdown of "Deutschland". That might end up in movie school just like "Deutschland" is being taught in history classes all over Germany now!

The read lines refers to the German expression "Roter Faden", meaning the quintessence through different periods.
Specter Berlin was one of the Co founders of "Aggro Berlin", a very famous Rap label in the early 2000's! This guy really envolved in a good direction!

Rammstein - Du riechst so gut 98 is an amazing music video aswell to check out... you can see that it is from 1998, but it is one f their greatest imo.
I definitely wouldn't check out the music video of Haifisch yet, since there you have a lot references to other Rammstein music videos. It is a fantastic music video aswell, but it is worth waiting for it
I think that this music video has a much more meaning and value for every kind a left oriented german. "Deutschland - will dich lieben und verdammen. [...] Deutschland, meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben!"

in addition to the similarities you pointed out, I also think the nazi officer & cleric hugging might specifically refer to the fact, that the very first treaty hitler signed after coming into power was with the roman-catholic church. if i recall correctly, this treaty entailed (among a lot of other stuff), the church withdrawing from all political functions. in exchange the catholics would, for the most part, be in charge of education.

the red lines are a german idiom for a "main theme/storyline", called "roter faden" or "red thread". main theme in german history was always conflict and destruction, the germans had to rise up from again to create something new and germania was the heart and soul, that made this possible. the end can be interpreted imho in 2 different ways.
either the new, actual state is sterile and heartless (hence the suits and sad faces), so germania literally fell in snowwhite hibernation, waiting to be waking up again,
OR
the astronauts, representing us, discovering out past, learned from that past and got rid of this part of german soul to not let it happen again.
The red lasers are probably representive of the proverbial „red thred“. In Germany we say that a narrative has a red thred „sawn“ into it that it follows.

The action with the fireworks did not even take place in a stadium but in a hall ( Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy) and would be unthinkable in e.g. America due to their immense safety regulations. If they go on tour there, the fans will miss a lot and will never get to see many really wicked effects!
By the way Til does this specific move, called "Til Hammer" cause he had dislocated his knee before a concert and repeatedly hit it in the backstage area to bring it back in. The other band members found this movement totally cool so that he he adopted it for the stage !
Apart from the fact that Til is a trained pyrotechnician, at Rammstein concerts a special stage worker is very close to the stage and is connected by a microphone to the person who controls the fire. He feels the temperature on his cheek and gives corresponding instructions whether you can still step it up a notch or the flames have to be reduced.

The Ring, which we say, is the legendary Formula 1 race track "Nürburgring"(The green hell), located in the middle of a central mountain of Germany, the "Volcano - Eifel". Rammstein was the Headliner and there are more than 85000 fans on the target line and I was right in the middle 😜 and not only the few thousand hardcore fans directly in front of the stage answer Til's questions, but actually the entire audience down to the last row and to have been there and to feel the concentrated energy of the audience was just indescribable !
At some point Ramstein discovered that you can make up with instant coffee. According to concentration, black to red spots appear, which looks like dirt or blood. Flake was hyper nervous all the time during an earlier tour. What did he forget ? That he was made up with lots of coffee in the evening during every concert - Maybe the reason why he needs a treadmill 😉 ?
But without Flake Rammstein would never have been what they are. Again and again he is only moved into the nerd corner and underestimated enormously. What most people remember is only the treadmill he is running on while playing. Most of the Rammstein pieces are backed by a mostly inconspicuous but sometimes bombastically symphonic sound body combined with techno elements and so much more. It´s done so cleverly that it is hardly noticeable in the foreground. But if you take it out of the equation and mix it away at the mixer console, the rest sounds almost like any metal band. Together with the typical Rammstein monster guitar riffs the keyboards in the background fill up the entire sound, make things round, and not at least because of this Rammstein sound so unique !

Exactly this concert in Germany took place about 20 km from where I lived and you could still hear it over a hill in between and see the light show flickering in the distance. You could clearly experience the sound level at which Rammstein are traveling 💥🤯

Totally whacky. Richard Kruspe tells the story in an interview on the DVD "In Amerika" released in 2015. First the police arrested Paul Landers off the stage and then one by one, the sound became thinner and thinner as the other band members were arrestet and at some point he put his guitar down and turned himself to the cops. For Rammstein, who had come together in the former GDR, the left dictatorial eastern part of divided Germany, America was in their imagination the "land of unlimited possibilities" in which you can do pretty much anything. But be careful, because for those who have even dealt with the Holocaust a little, this is really hard stuff ! At first I was interested, then banned, then horrified and then there were only tears. As a German with a left-wing liberal background, I would have to hate the camp commandant, but otherwise he is also a father. However, someone who lets the children of others gasify without scruples. But something like this had to happen, I guess, so that he finally recognizes this absolutely inhuman madness and his constant self-deception !
"Wo sind die Kinder" - "Where are the children" alludes to the fact that in German death camps, women and children were gassed first so that no more Jews could grow up or be born. "Keiner weiß, was hier geschehen, keiner hat etwas gesehen" means "Nobody knows what happened here, nobody saw anything" refers to the fact that very few Germans wanted to have known about the concentration camps, which of course was complete nonsense. For example, thousands of apartments were suddenly vacant because the Jewish residents had been deported during the night. The very next day, "Aryan" Germans, mostly belonging to the party cadre, moved in. Then many civilian German guards were employed in the death camps, who were even proud of their "work" and bragged about it to their acquaintances and friends. I could give many more examples, which prove that it was total bullshit, when it was claimed not to have seen anything and not to know what was happening there.

The production price of the video was 7 million euros. Most expensive danish TV show ever produced was 1864 with 8 hours of footage, it cost 23 million euros. Puts things into perspective.

The red lasers signify a common thread or theme running through the video-Germany building itself up only to see it fall dramatically each time, lessons have historically never been learned. Germania, the mythical image of the German people, is usually portrayed as a blonde haired white woman which is not the case in the video. We see the monks eating off her in much the same way that the Church grew fat off the riches of the land while leaving only scraps for the poor, as represented by the people clad in the BDSM gear in the box below the Rammstein table. The concentration camp scene is set at Mittelbrau-Dora where the V2 rockets we see in the video were built by the prisoners (over 20,000 prisoners were killed during the manufacturing of the V2 rockets and the rockets themselves were only ever a propaganda tool, they never achieved their actual aim). The scene that you weren't sure about was that of the Red Army Faction, also known as the Baader-Meinhoff group who were left wing extremists who essentially held Germany hostage for a number of years , killing, as I recall 34 people. The leaders ultimately committed suicide whilst in prison. Till portrays Ulrike Meinhoff in the video here. The scene after that emphasises how lessons haven't been learned-witch burning in the background and then a few hundred years later in the foreground, book burnings. The birth scene where Germania gives birth to Leonburger puppies is interesting because the birth of these puppies (they were almost wiped out during WW1 and WW2) signifies a resurgence for Germany and the birth itself is overseen by a Law lord in effect-the robes etc we see Flake in are judicial robes from the highest court in Germany so a legal and political re-birth. There are also loads of references in the video to Rammstein's back catalogue all the way through the video. The directors for Deutschland and Zeit are different, Specter Berlin for Deutschland and Robert Gwisdek for Zeit. Once again, interesting to learn a bit more about the mechanics of video shooting and a great and enthusiastic reaction. Cost of the video, btw, in excess of a million euros.
I strongly suggest Rammsteins music video for Stripped. And if you watch it, you have to watch the making of as well. One of the most visually pleasing yet most controversial videos ever.
