It's so cool to see footage from The Original Haunted House, I went on it when I was really young and hid in my jacket through my most of it haha. Remembered all the screaming and the demonic faces even to this day, Then when I youtubed it, I found out it's been changed to Duel and it's just kinda ..meh these days. At first I thought maybe it wasn't as scary as I remembered it but then I found this footage..Now THIS is how I remembered it going like haha ! Awesome video dude! :)
Thanks man! I wish this video was much clearer than the VHS handheld camera it was shot on but it definitely proves how much better it was back then compared to now
I'm 34 now and when I first went on this ride I was no more than 7 I think. I wouldn't normally find this very scary as an adult, but seeing and hearing this for the first time since decades ago actually terrifies me because of the memories, especially the intense bizarre screaming sound of that head from around 3:34-3:54. Watching this makes me realise now where some of my fascination of supernatural horror films comes from. The whole entrance with the music etc made it that much scarier. It shows the effect this kind of stuff has on you when you're very young... this ride, the way it was back then, gave me nightmares! 😂 Thanks for this video.
The Haunted House still remains one of the best dark rides in the country for me, (despite the refurbishment to Duel: The Haunted House Strikes Back). Though many of the ride's original parts, props, theming etc. has, since, been changed or removed, I love everything about the ride. Making what once was a truly frightening immersive experience to an interactive one doesn't affect how cool this ride is. If anything, adding laser guns/targets/zombies in, fits a modern-day audience much better than it would before the refurbishment. Another favourite dark ride of mine is TERRORTOMB at Chessington: World of Adventures. Sadly, though much of TERRORTOMB's set still exists within the ride to this day, now as Tomb Blaster, it's like exploring the empty shell of what was once an incredibly immersive experience (much like The Haunted House, in that sense). Although over many years, both rides have changed extensively - Tomb Blaster deserves to be re-imagined, whereas, Duel still holds some kind of magic about it for me. And with the addition of the Haunted Hollow walkthrough in 2007, I do believe it helped make the Gloomy Wood area of Alton Towers even more chilling and spooky, and just as exciting! especially for first-time visitors. Duel: The Haunted House Strikes back is a top-class attraction at Alton Towers!
I love Duel although it does feel like it needs some TLC with old effects still not working or even bothered to be fixed and quite a few empty black spaces where more scenes / animatronics could go. I rather enjoy Tomb Blaster too I think their set pieces are absolutely wonderful and it’s very interactive and immersive but that magic you describe about Duel I can’t put my finger on but I agree, I prefer it more myself too
@@LiftHillsandThrills, when I say "magic", perhaps I'm referring to original sounds and set that still work the same to this day! (most notably the flying heads as I've always loved those!). I will admit that adding all the zombies in to shoot at with laser guns isn't quite the same as seeing lots of unique looking demons, ghouls and ghosts absolutely everywhere in pitch-dark with even more sounds and such a chilling atmosphere, but I do think it works for everyone in today's climate. Alton Towers having preserved parts of the original The Haunted House from inside the ride, and from what I researched earlier, a handful of re-painting on set pieces does show that they still care about this classic, however, I do agree that there's always room for improvement!
That got me in my nostalgic feels bro. I distinctly remember going on this again and again!! Was my favourite ride on the park. Second to Nemesis. The soundtrack the animatronics the trummel it was all amazing. Wish to god they would scrap Duel and remaster the ghost train that would be amazing!! 🤘🏻💛
What a mistake by Towers to change this Duel! This was a classic, the audio and theming were perfectly scary, probably too scary for kids but that’s what made it brilliant. Doom and Sons was another top attraction that was old school but had effective scares!
Really good video from the Classic Haunted House. I went to Thorpe Park today I was mainly looking around the park and filming stuff for my UA-cam channel. I only did The Swarm and Nemesis Inferno. I think Thorpe need to step up when it comes to investing new rides and refreshing there current rides like what Chessington and Legoland have done. I might be going back to Thorpe next Monday.
Theme Park Awesome Yeah Thorpe are begins but they have zero adult theme park competition. IF (and it’s a catastrophically big IF) London Resort comes to fruition then Merlin may choose to invest in something more substantial but I certainly hope they build another coaster before then!
@@LiftHillsandThrills I agree. The more Thorpe don't invest or fresh there current rides then the more it won't be as fun but will have to see? I can't believe the Towers CD is already sold out.
Theme Park Awesome I got mine a few seconds before they posted on social media but I’ve posted 2 videos about it already 😂 might just subtly throw it into an upcoming video haha
@@louiswright8282 No source whatsoever, don't get too excited buddy it is Towers after all they might do absolutely nothing but it's an anniversary for the ride next year so I'm hopeful of them doing something but NOT going back to Haunted House (sorry to burst the bubble haha)
I never got a chance to go on this ride as the haunted house but I have been on duel and no one told me about the giant spider (I have arachnophobia) 🕷
Jacob _0711 Id say the original Haunted House for me. Hex has its charms and the wonderful story attached to it but I’m a sucker for a vintage ghost train style!
Did you have your eyes closed by any chance? 😁, braver than me bud this is my weakness at park's I hate (I know that's a strong word but it's true lol) and I mean hate horror based rides🥺 stay well away at scare fest lmao, I'll stick with the coasters bud 🤣🎢👍
This was easily the best dark ride in the country when it opened and remained this way for many years. What a classic. Thanks for sharing the footage!
ThemeParksPlus No problem, thanks for checking it out!
You are not the only one Shaun! The entrance music, and the doll house girl terrified me. Thank you so much for the footage.
No worries!
3:08 the old strobe makes the big spider's face look dead evil - defo WAY more effective than the nightclub style UV strobe we have today
It was so much better back then!

The soundtrack and theming seems wayyyyy more intense than Duel! The giant head is freaky too.

Ben King Yeah it’s a real shame, I hope they get rid of the laser guns one day. It’s fun but it disconnects you from the experience
