- I'm fortunate to call Deborah a friend because she is one of the most inspiring people I know. Life dealt her a nasty blow with a severe brain injury, but she has thrived in spite of it. She discovered that living in a van was ideal for her limitations and it turned around and extended the length and quality of her life.

I too am disabled so this inspires me!
I'm disabled, too. And I'm going on the road in three months. :D
I'm also disabled. And I am going on the road in 26 days. Bob and Debra have been a big inspiration to me.
Shell Cshells ME TOOOOOO... Its wonderful to meet so many Independant women! OMGosh! I love it!
Patricia Bailey - I'm jealous! :D I can't wait!
me too
She remembers the important things, like when and how her friends have helped her
That one dog is huge.
Yes, I'm glad that you mentioned that!
Yes, that's really all she talked about. It was so important to her. That's really why I love this video even more ❤❤❤

I too am disabled from Lupus. This is just wonderful. I love this woman's glow!
Disabled retired nurse.
God Bless you Deborah! Great guys like Bob and others to help you ! I hope you can show us more videos
I think Bob might be a living Saint. What a special man. It's a shame... as surprisingly large as this community is, it is still such a small segment of the population. I think if a broader audience knew what Bob is out there doing for so many people, from so many walks of life, I think he would be able to help even more people. He's truly inspirational. He does so much and he's so practical and humble about it all. Thank you, Bob!
I think you may be right. I'm sure he is doing God's work and I would love to follow his plan and lead a similar lifestyle helping people.
Awwwwwh... the care and assistance of this community was demonstrated here! Amazing... I loved the simplicity of this build and her story. Thanks for sharing
I would not have made it without Bob and the nomad community. It is a good life. Glad you enjoyed the vid. KOKO!
Hooray, it's Debra! Her optimism and spirit in the face of the real difficulties she encounters is inspiring.
Awhh, thanks again totoro myneighbour! :))
Bob, it really helps that you show folks from all different situations living this life. Deborah's an inspiration and so is your channel. Thank you sir and aloha.
Thank you Permanent Camper it is a pleasure to make these videos and I truly appreciate your contributions to the comments. Aloha.
What an amazing community. I love how everyone pitched in to assist her.
And her sense of gratitude shows what kind of lady she is.
It is heartwarming to see the results of the help she received, and the works she was able to do herself with the insulation. A wonderful community!
Agreed eileenfb1948! Thank you! :))
Agreed!
Deborah has decorated her van is such an awesome boho fashion. She seems like she would be so much fun to hang out with. Love her jewelry!
Oh wow, just saw this SSS S! Thank you! :))
@@authordebradickinson I'd love to see your van now/recent changes...
@@authordebradickinson thanks for the video.
@@hypnoticlistener4621you are most welcome. I am grateful to Bob for the interview and tour, and for all he does. KOKO!
I'm not sure how people end up in situations where your only hope is getting moved into a van with a sleeping bag and a couple of duffle bags of possessions, but the help and humanity that you have given to this lady ( and so many others that I have seen in your videos) is amazing. You are one in a million and are making positive changes for so many people. I don't know what many people, especially women, would have done without you sharing your expertise in making the van a home. I am positive you have given many people back dignity and hope for their happy future. Not everyone starts off wanting to live in a van but for those that did it out of necessity you have tremendously helped them. I dont know them or you, but I thank you for helping them. It inspires me to be more helpful to others. We never know when that little boost we give someone might just be a real life changer.
It's amazing to see how many single women can travel safe full time. ..and make helpful friends along the way...
CheapRVliving - Is there a way to donate to Deborah so she can get her upgraded bed and some more material, as well as the foam board she needs to finish her Van? God bless her. She is truly an inspiration. You can tell she gets a bit lost for a word or to access memory, but she is doing and is fabulous.
She has her own channel. Look her up - Debra Dickinson I don't know if she has contact info r not. She does have an Amazon link though.
You are awesome! ty
They did a go fund me for Debra and she went to a friends house and did a total rebuild on the van... She's back on the road and doing well...
Nun Ya I agree she is brilliant for doing this ,I'd love to do this for half the year .xxxx😊😊
I contacted her after watching all the work that man did for her. That man is a saint!
Bob.....you seem like such a nice and genuine person. I wish that there were a lot more people like you.
She is just precious, I enjoyed her so much... Would love to know if she has a channeL. You are so great to have helped her and so many.
SillyConeBaby She does have a channel...And you can find it in this video

Bob you are so caring for everyone. Thank you for showing all different people who embrace this lifestyle. It gives me hope.
I wanna learn to live in my car. I wanna live simple and say goodbye to house payments and yard work and overpriced household bills!
Do it, I did. And I don't regret it one bit
I too am seeking tiny living on wheels. 14 passenger mini bus. Just getting started.
I feel like I’ve made a new friend. Deborah is so friendly and her van looks great. So glad she’s doing well. 🙂

Bob: I find it hard to put into words how important your work is -- you provide such a valuable, humane service for people . For those who choose this lifestyle, you provide wonderful information. For those who are struggling, you provide much needed help. I know someone that could benefit so much from your videos, and this lifestyle, if I could just get her involved.
What a beautiful lady. Thanks to all the great folks in the community that helped her out with her awesome home. Thank you Bob. Another great video!

A lot of us have the Buddy heater. My friend bought mine. She also bought the adapter and the longer hose 😊. The Buddy is WONDERFUL!!
Deborah, I love the beautiful board your son had made for you:)! You have a great spirit and wonderful friends:)!
i learn so much with these videos. deborah is inspiring. im a 59 yr old disabled woman and this video gave me the inspiration i needed to believe that i can do this. i am watching every video of yours and have learned so much. i would like to know more about rtr and where you hold meets. where would i go for that info?
Billye Martin -Billie, I don't have my van yet and I'm 57 and planning to live this way. I was forced to retire early but I'm saving for my van and trying to learn a new way to subsidize my meager retirement income. I plan on being at the next rtr in January in Quartzite, Arizona. Hope to see you and all these wonderful people then!!!
thank you debra and dawn!
Just awesome that Deborah was able to find a vehicle that worked, friends and support in a community that is helping to build alternate options for living. As someone that travels for work on a budget and is seeing more and more greedy real estate hiking the cost of houses, apartments, condos to share I can appreciate people looking for a way to live with dignity and independence and have the option to do so.
You shoul have a prize for the absolute sweetest van lifer.❤❤😊❤
That is so sweet of you to say. Thank you!
Up until yesterday, all I've ever viewed with these van conversations were people with a lot of money making them look perfect.
Since yesterday, I'm actually getting real peoples van conversations.
Economical and functional.
Wow ! Debra is my inspiration and my strength. Im also disabled was crushed by an elevator door back in 2011. I am doing better after many surgeries but still have my hard days. My husband and family are my support. We are going full time RV'rs as soon as my husband retires to fulfill my dream. I was scared and had doubts but now all that is gone. Thank you for bringing peace within myself. Hope to see you both on the road one day. Thank you very much.

I'm inspired to hear that there is a strong and helpful community out there. I am also inspired to know that you can build your van over time as you live in it and it doesn't have to be over-engineered. My favorite part is how you did the insulation, which is not only easy to create and install but also easy to check for mold and replace as well.
Very nice of you Bob Wells to help her get started. Loved her son's work, her nice craftwork, and that huge, lovable-looking dog.
She is a Wonderful Person that I am Proud To Know! Great Video!
Thank you Beachcricket! Love and hugZ! :))
Im so glad i came across this. You guys are wonderful and im looking to do this to because i am disabled and when my youngest turns 18 in two years my income drops in half and it has scared me to death. I dont want to be dependent on my kids. So im so happy to see this cause now i know that there is something i can do. Thank you so much. God bless you all.
It warms my heart when I see all the love and compassion that travelers have for one another and how they help each other is a beautiful thing.
I love finding this video from four years ago. She has come so far, and she is a great Lady always helping others with her videos.
This means the world to me Debbie. Tyvm! HugZ!
Love the way Deborah finished off the interior walls and ceiling by covering the foam board with the beautiful fabric, really charming and pretty!
I am disabled and feel I will be able to do this as well. I have hope now.
Love Debra. Have been following her for about 2 years. Interesting to see what she started out with. Debra is still the same sweet lady who gives credit to her friends. I do admire her. ❤️🐕🌹
I remember the bed build video that you and Jamie did for Deborah's van, Bob. That is the most impressive part of your and Jamie's videos: you constantly help others.
Deborah made the comment that "she has some wonderful friends".. well I want add that from watching and hearing Deborah, that anyone who knows her has the better part of that relationship. Deborah is a delightful and tender hearted lady.
Awhh, thank you for your kind words RonRay! You made my day. And yes, Bob and Jamie, like so many others out here - are always helping others. Bob, through his hard work, his book, website, forum, and this channel, let alone his annual RTR, has built an amazing community and network out here. We are all blessed by him.
Thanks again and take care! :))

The more I hear, the more the Nomad community sounds so full of wonderful people, both the ones just starting, and those who help people like this young lady.
I know this thread is now a few years old, but i'm sure, even more relevant in the world that we now live in. Just reinforces an old saying. "Never judge a book by its cover". Good wishes to all van dwellers far & wide.😛
If the glue keeps coming loose, you might try strong magnets to hold insolation.
That is one of the most brilliant ways to both insulate and decorate!

wow what a beautiful home you made for yourself Deborah! I really love the beautiful fabrics on the insulation panels. They are fantastic and gorgeous! You made a nice place for yourself and enabled yourself to really have a good life. I think you are incredibly brave and creative. You can be really proud of yourself, Deborah. Am glad you have so many great friends who help you with things. Your dog looks really happy too. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us. All the best to you Deborah! greetz to Deborah and Bob - Jason
Thank you so much Jason! I loved that van very much.
I love love love Deborah. Such an inspiration! I can hardly wait to get on the road. I am a domestic violence SURVIVOR and Im going otr full time as a way of healing and not only physically but emotionally and spiritually. I fled with basically the clothes on my back and my lil truck. But im saving money and working out how i will support myself. I love to Crochet and any kind of crafts so im thinking I will start a channel to teach crochet...but Im so serious that i already have a box that when i see something i could use in my van that i havent even found yet...lol...it goes in there. My goal is to be otr in one year. I live my life AS IF. That means I live as if its already here if that makes any since. Deborah gives me such hope and inspiration. Thank you for all your wonderful videos Bob. I will definately be seeing everyone sometime in the future!!!
I am disabled with med.issues+tbi. I am so glad to see that someone like myself can do this and thrive.

Hi Sherry! Glad you are enjoying it again! KOKO!
What an inspiration! She’s so adorable, God bless her. And you Bob rock. Thank you for this channel and all you share- so valuable. And thank you for being of so much help to your beautiful community. 🕊💖🌞
I once knew an elderly lady that slept on a bus bench on Miami beach for years ,she had all her possessions in her shopping kart...when she died they found that she had a bank account with over with over 900,000 in it. Pretty sad that she didn't enjoy it
Sharky There must have been mental illness in that situation. 😞
To both of you why do you think she was not enjoying her life without the money? And why do you always assume it's mental health issues?! We have a local man, he is extremely well off and is mentally healthy! He walks all over town, picking up trash everywhere and lives in a tent behind one of our major stores by choice! He is a highly educated man and lost the love of his life and decided to set out and find community! He enjoys living off the land and meeting many different people!
She was obviously senile or worst Sharky....You see that lot's with the elderly!
Depression can take you down that path... trauma...PTSD.
I agree, it sounds like a myth. Every city has one of those stories. Generally it’s not true. And if it was, it goes without saying it would be mental illness. People don’t live outside on a bench if they are mentally well. Common sense would tell u that. I was homeless for a long time. I saw it all.
I am disabled too. You’ve inspired me! Love your van setup ❤️❤️
Thank you so much! I've been worrying so much about my own future and I've just discovered your channel. I'm 47 and waiting to hear from disability myself. And you've not only inspired me, you've lifted a constant anxiety from my shoulders. THANK YOU!!

Bob. This brought tears to my eyes. You are such a blessing to so many people in the tribe. The kindness you show and giving of yourself to others in need speaks volumes about the person you are. I have been watching for a long time. It took me a while to figure out how to comment but now I'm able. I can see the joy and thankfulness in Debra for all the help she has received from you and others. Why can't there world be this way? Folks are just so lost in a world that just takes from everyone. Giving is much better than taking. Bless your heart. I hope to join your tribe someday.

This video was one of the first I watched last year (2017) as I was seriously contemplating this life style. I never forgot Debra. Now I have a van and am beginning to get it ready! (yea! I'm insulated!) I am so glad I came back to watch this and to be inspired by the simplicity. I have been complicating things because after watching hundreds more I got caught up in these van build perfectionist's bells and whistles and forgot about the basics. That mentality is holding me back from getting out of "Dodge." Thank you Bob and Debra for this re-run and reality check for the push toward freedom.. once again.
This was truly inspirational Bob❤️💖❤️💖thank you so much.

Thank you Bob and Deborah! She is amazing and definitely my favorite interview by far. You guys are both lucky in your amazing friends.
Very inspiring. I'm looking forward to her interview.
What you are doing with RTR is amazing and inspirational... the help you give to people starting out is outstanding and you created your own huge community of people from all over the world that are wanting to live nomadically I’ve been interested in this kind of life for a while now but I am still stuck on how to get the money to start off ( I have bills and help my grandma who I live with) and I am having a dilemma on how to make something that can double as an art studio, mixed media is messy and takes up space for all the supplies and I’m atm moving my craft room so as I’m doing that I’m downsizing and getting rid of stuff and I have an issue throwing out things that are still usable for someone else I wanna find people who are into mixed media art who have a faster turnaround for projects, if I had more time to spend crafting I’d have less of a back up of supplies for projects that I have yet to start it’s rather sad when you love doing something but you have no time for it because you’re working all day at a job where you feel under appreciated and underpaid I love my customers ( most of them lol) but I’d rather be at home making jewelry and setting up things for the business I’m trying to start of me selling my artwork I’m only 24 so I’m I have time but I feel like I wasted more than three years of my life on being an active heroin addict ( where I basically was living in my car since I spent most of my time driving and sitting in my car lol ..... I miss being mobile but I definitely don’t miss the drugs.... I hope I can figure out how to achieve my goals and dreams before I am physically unable to do what needs to be done to achieve them.... thanks for all the wonderful information and inspiration you spread to us all
Where do you find friends like these? I need this! I have great friends but I'm not sure if they would know my needs if I lived in a van. It seems like you all have developed a little family all over the states.
I needed a lift and came back to watch this again. I cannot believe it has been three years since this was aired!
Questions:
Q: Deb, did you ever take out the front barriers and install curtains?
Q: How many of those who said they were eager to get on the road have done so?
Q: Did anyone ever respond to the lady asking about receiving SSI/Disability payments while living in a van versus being homeless?
I honestly cannot track all of those questions and I regret that because it sounds like there are people that needed help. I agree ... hard to believe it has been 3 years. I’ve been a nomad a long time! Lol.
Love Debra! Great interview! Thanks Bob!
Hi Cynthia! Thank you! Big hugZ! :))
I really commend you on treating entry level nomads the same as more seasoned individuals . The way you do it is an art and really says a lot about your real personality . Thank you for being the person you are . Your a good man
