To anyone with this error code, CHECK YOUR SPARK PLUGS! The previous owner never changed them and I was in the process of replacing them when the far left-most spark plug well was dipped in oil. Got a lot of paper towels and kept drying it up. Started up ol girl and the error code was no more!
Are you sure this wasn't your valve cover gasket leaking? Sometimes those things leak and cause small misfires that mess with the 02 sensors and the cat.
That makes sense. My valve cover gasket exploded sending oil everywhere. I bet that oil got into my plugs.

The spark plug fouler works great. Only problem is that now in California during smog check the attendant will pass a mirror on a handle under the chassis or get down on the ground and look for an extender. If you have one on, you will fail smog, as they are not legal.

My muffler was making a popping sound today after changing spark plugs and ignition coil. I reinstalled the spark plugs after checking to see if they may have been damaged but they checked out fine. The rough idling i had before went away so i was pleased. However 30 seconds into turning my 2002 ford escape on this popping sound started and i see the muffler back fire. Im going to try any of these steps. Hopeful that it works! Thanks for the informative video.

Did you figure it out? Something similar happened to me with a Hyundai Accent, turned I put the spark plug wires out of order.
Too much backfire will cause catalytic converter to melt inside.

I had the popping sound and that sound was actually small broken off pieces of the honeycomb rattling inside. It got very loud and annoying. Had to change the cat

My cars service engine soon light was tripped not once, but TWICE driving over the same exact crazy deep(I have 17 inch tires and the entire tire fits inside this dip. Replaced o2 sensor and it worked until I drove through that same damn dip again, as soon as my tires were in it BAM service engine soon light popped back on

I reset the check engine lightened code, but after 250 miles of driving it comes back on, I replaced the catalytic converter 5 months ago and verified with two shops that I don't have an exhaust leak. Hi Michael, the most common reason that triggers this code is a faulty catalytic converter but we suggest checking also the exhaust system for damage/leaks and check the downstream O2 sensor.
Carbon buildup can also trigger Code P0420. My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo threw up the code even tho there were no symptoms of bad cats or o2 sensor so I thought what if it's carbon buildup? So I used 2 cans of Seafoam Intake Cleaner and after following directions it killed Code P0420 and the check engine light never came back on

How long did it take for the code to erase
@Terrion Barlow 10 seconds after the seafoam blew all the carbon out. My recommendation is if the light doesn't turn off have the dealership or whoever else that has a OBD2 scanner they can erase the code

Check your coolant temp. Thermostat might be stuck open and the engine never reaches proper operating temperature.

Hi Marixa, kindly check the condition of the spark plug. If the condition is good, then the issue could be coming from the converter (needs replacement). If worn, you can replace the plugs and clear the code.
After getting a P0430 code only, I had driver side of catalytic converter replaced w/ factory part (also had P0301 code so I coil and plug replaced). After driving for less than a day engine light comes on and now getting P0420 code. could this be sensor issue or do I need to drive 100 miles to get better reading of car's computer. 2007 FX35 Infiniti?

I had it on once and it went away on its own..it came back few days ago so I took it to my mechanic and he’s telling me that I MUST change the catalytic converter and that There’s no other option. Hello, kindly check if there's any leak to the exhaust manifold, gaskets, and exhaust pipes pre-catalytic converter. Repair the leak, clear the code and complete several drive cycles afterwards. If the issue will continue to persist, please check the voltage reading of the downstream O2 sensor, this will tell you weather catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

P0420 is usually a permanent code that is stored in your computer. You won’t be able to clear it with a cheaper scan tool
@@bradgoodinTrue, a cheaper scan tool can clear the CEL but the code is still there and after a predetermined number of run cycles it’ll come back if the data is still bad.

Hi Dashty, you can check the exhaust system under your car. It looks like a bulge in the middle of the exhaust piping between the muffler and where the headers connect to the exhaust downpipes. If the bulge is not there, you do not have a catalytic converter.

Hi Chea, both of these codes imply a failed catalytic converter. As per your vehicle's make/model, a bad catalytic converter or a faulty oxygen sensor might be the cause why the code stored. We also suggest checking the wiring condition (downstream O2 sensor) and if there's an upstream leak in the exhaust system.

I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze with 1.4L engine it has 180,000 mile. I have been getting a P0420 code. It would go away and come back. Before replacing any parts do this.
I fixed it just by disconnecting the Negative side on the battery 1st. Now find the computer it’s on the side where the battery is. It’s has 3 connectors on it. I disconnected all 3 connectors and cleaned each side male and female connector with CRC 05103 QD Electronic Cleaner. Let it dry 15 minutes. I plugged all 3 back in. I installed negative battery cable. I started and drove the car 50 miles. It never came back.

After driving the Engine light did come back. The same error code P0420 came back.

I hv honda odyssey 2009 with 200k miles.recently i changed mobil 1 5w20 extended performance high milage. They guy put whole gln of 5 qrts instead of 4.5 qrts with oil filter, after 2 days of running 20 milages it threw up p0420 code. Plz advise

Hello we suggest checking for an exhaust leak. Testing an oxygen/O2 sensor or the catalytic converter is also recommended.

We suspect a clogged exhaust system/damage on your catalytic converter. Check also for exhaust leak. Test the oxygen/O2 sensor and the catalytic converter to verify the issue.

if you have your original cat..have muffler shop port a new downstream o2 sensor port at end of your cat.right at the tip.of cat and screw in your 02 and have them screw a plug in oem one amd see p0420 disappear..

@@kiettran3900 if your car is struggling going up hill. Chances are you need to replace your sparks plugs and possibly ignition coils. But narrow down the issues first. Get a code reader. Find out which cylinders are misfiring. Change all your spark plugs. If a code still comes up for a cylinder misfire, change the ignition coil for that affected cylinder. Then you should worry about your p0420 issue. You can put cataclean in your gas before attempting to replace your oxygen sensor or cleaning your catalytic converter. I had the same issues with my car. It would drop to 30 or 40 mph when I went up hills. Changing all my spark plugs and replace one bad ignition coil resolved that issue. All that misfiring eventually causes that 0420 code. So I put cataclean into my gas tank as instructed. My 0420 code went away and hasn't came back on.
After soaking. you can rinse it with the pressure washer but please set it to low. If there's no improvement after cleaning the catalytic converter then you might need to get a replacement.

Have you tried checking for leaks in the intake, exhaust tube and fuel injectors? Check also if there's worn spark plugs.
