The Hisense A9 is like a Boox Palma but with a sim slot. And it has the community working on LineageOS for it.
Very true but that device is almost twice the price point than the unit reviewed here. Also,, the Hisense has absolutely insane specs in comparison. The only similarity is the tech in their respective screens. It's kind of like, ya, both cars have wheels but which one do you want, the Ferrari or the Hyundai? Your call.
@@STR82DVD Honestly, I bought the A9 a while ago and it was actually reasonably priced back then. I didn't realize how expensive to import the A9 has become.
@@eink-reviews I'm guessing the price has only increased since Hisense announced it would no longer be making e-ink devices...
I bought one a week ago and it arrives today. I'm super excited to get this and replace my old Kindle.
Just received my boox palma today !! Excited to explore 😊
Very good review. Thank you. I got mine and am using Kindle on it and use the volume buttons to go forward and back on pages. I''d like to learn how to assign the left function key to turn the pages as well, since i usually hold this in my left hand and its a little big for my hand. best!
Any thoughts on time management and planner app functionality? Would it be useful as a digital planner and task manager?
Video is missing right audio channel
Thanks for letting me know. That's odd..
right... can't even watch this vid like this
On my last alt style trip I rolled with a flip phone and a price performance Moto G with no sim installed. (camera, gps, hotel rest day email)
Is the Boox trying to be an e-reader with a nice camera and GPS or a long battery life micro tablet? It just seems tiny for an e-reader. "No sim" instantly cuts the size of its target market.
Thanks for another video, love your channel!
A question - does the devide pair well with air pods or other bluetooth earphones?
Bluetooth headphones work well!
Way way way too expensive for a unit with NO SIM functionality. It's a really expensive e-reader from what I can tell lad. Thanks for the great review.
Yeah. There are other options out there for sure if people just need some 2 or 3 apps for functions.
IMO, id disagree. BOOX probably has some of the best E-ink displays available that can be reasonably be afforded, and it has the ability to run most e-book apps and can browse the web unlike a kindle or other similar device.
@@ColinXYZ I can browse the Web on my Kobo Clara 2e but ya, it sucks. The only realized upside to this device would be extraordinary battery life.
@@ColinXYZ I agree!
Nice concept, great ui. Love the eink screen, but it's too expensive for an wi-fi only device. Great review!
New to your channel.
Any recommendations or already posted videos for a good "dumb phone" for a kid? No apps, no internet? Or if a browser is available, a way to block?
Sunbeam F1 is a good one. Nokia 225 also, the browser is essentially unusable. An alternative is to buy a plan that doesn't have data from US Mobile or Tello :)
Do you have the option to widen the margins like you can with the kindle? The kindle allows you to make the margins as wide or as narrow as you want so you an have the text in a narrow column (like the way the text is in newspapers).
Different apps allow for that. I recommend Koreader for the highest level of customization.
Thank you for the video. How comfortable it is to carry this and a flip phone on your pocket?
It's a bit bulky. I recommend using one pocket for one and one for the other.
Thanks for the review. For a smart phone without the calling I still use my iPod touch 5.
iPod touch is a great option!
How does this compare to the Hisense A9 speed-wise and refresh rate-wise?
It's a bit faster than the A9. The panel is different.
The mf that watches this on a boox is a fucking legend
Good value device for the price
Can I read news apps such as wsj on this?
You can
This would be it for me if they put a sim option in. I want it so bad as a phone.
Is this thing any better than a bedtime mode on Android device?
I'd think so. It's designed to be boring by default.
I think this is a cool device, for what it is. Wish it was less than $200 USD though. Also, the audio in this video seemed to only be one channel. Just an FYI.
Thanks for letting me know. Super odd that my audio didn't mix.
I would pay a lot of money for a 4-5" color e-ink Android phone.
You should look into the Bigme Hibreak that just released. I think you'll like it
can I use bluetooth headset or earphones in this device?
Yes
@@JoseBriones thanks for replying😅, does it also have dictionary translation touch (sensor) like kindle?
Sometimes it seems like, by trying to simplify tech use, it's necessary to multiply devices and actually complicate one's tech life.
I.e., someone gets a dumb phone, but then has to carry around a separate camera and a separate gaming console. What would you say to this objection to the "digital minimalism" lifestyle?
Digital minimalism isn't about the number of devices you use. It's about what they are designed to do and how to integrate them in your life. Yes, carrying multiple objects adds complexity and sometimes can be bothersome. However, having peace of mind and creating a space that isn't demanding for my constant attention is worth it.
Easy and simple are usually misunderstood. Simple doesn't have to be easy. Easy sometimes leads to more difficulty. In the case of the smartphone, it makes a lot of things easy and convenient, at a cost. The question is if you are willing to pay that (attention, money, life) cost.
Does it work well with android auto?
It technically does, but in my experience it's half and half accurate.
Technology is definately advancing, we will have a e-ink phone very soon in future
This looks decent, really not a bad idea to have a wifi only device for stuff like banking apps or ride share, stuff like that. As I was typing this right at the end of the review you said exactly why I won't buy it, even for $200 I would buy it for sure if only it was the size if the ipod touch.
What’s the battery life like?
5+ days depending on use
I Can only talk for myself.
This device will eventually drag you back into buying a smartphone.
The sound of this video doesn't work on the right air piece of the apple airpods second generation
could it read QR code?
Yes it can!
Can you do a Ghostmode Pro phone review?
It's the same as my other Ghostphone reviews. The system is the same, hardware is the only difference.
Oh really? Thanks for the reply!
Right side audio☠️
Lost me on the no sim
yet its so slow, add more ram!
It's not slow because of RAM. That's just the technology of e-ink
@@JoseBriones still slow compared to older e ink products
@@Djoeeeeeethat's just not true at all
I m a boox air2 user and waiting an eink smartphone. this palma is useless imho... to little to read, no sim. Come on why?
Like I said. As a companion to a flip phone, it works decently well. It's about those apps like WhatsApp, 2FA, Podcasts, etc that flip phones don't have but this can help to bridge the gap.
@@JoseBrionesAnd how am I gonna get internet on it if my sim is on a flip phone
@@MrMRforeverwifi or hotspot from the flip
I'll rather buy china $50 phone, that price is blood sucking 😂
