Tectone you remind me a lot of my dad telling me I should stop watching anime because cartoons are for children, when I was 13 this had some effect on me because I wanted to be seen as 'grown up.'
When I actually grew up I understood that most people are morons and I didn't need to stop likeing something that I actually genuinely found fun just to earn the approval of people whose opinion I care about less than my cats.
I'm 34 now and I still love anime, SpongeBob was an awesome show, pokemon will always be fun no matter how much Nintendo and gamefreak try to fuck it up Harry potter fanfiction is still great and yes I also love Genshin.
Luckily I can still enjoy all those things because I have no obligation to look 'grown up' to anyone.

He's not saying to stop watching things meant for kids. He's saying Genshin is a kid's game; as in lighthearted with no true "dark" contents. The lore may be dark, but they don't show it or most of the times quickly brush past it. And that's not a bad thing, as this is a game meant for everyone. So if a kid can watch it without getting night terrors it's a kid's movie? I don't understand your logic. What point are you trying to make exactly? As a kid I was watching R rated movies, are those "kids movies"? Genshin got a Teen rating, it's target audience is the young adult audience, primarily. Does that mean kids and families don't play it? No, but that doesn't change their target audience.
Also in old kids content, a lot of that stuff is in there is there for the adults in the room. Also, many of your quotes pertain to films that are rated PG, that suggest parental guidance because quote "some material may not be suited for children" which in the video game space would equate to an E10+ rating, not an E rating.

It is that simple. Now I'm sure they know, that they have families that play their games and yeah, they definitely do cater to that audience, and not just in Genshin, in Star Rail too. All of Hoyo's games have the silly family friendly mini games. Most Gacha's do, in fact.

One or the other other might not be everybody’s cup of tea and guess what, that’s okay. This is a problem with what tectone does, he’s probably just drama farming, but he breeds so much toxicity through his community in doing this that it does nothing but hurt everyone. I think a large part of why WW launch was disappointing is because of how much hype the CCs put around it. To put into perspective the type of lore that we could be in store for when it comes to WuWa; PGR has an entire 3 hour long main story quest that depicts a child trying to survive in a situation caused by a giant sentient blood ocean that's consuming people and replaying their dying moments as far as it can in order to attract their loved ones and eat them as well. It depicts an entire colony moving from place to place, just trying to find a safe area with the aid of the gray ravens and ends with very VERY expilict child death, s*icide, and extreme survivor's guilt. On top of that, trafficking comes up early in the story and the commandant that you play as is almost roped into it at the very start of the quest. Other things the game gets into, as time goes on, include more child death, the real conditions of a poor child estranged from their community because people think their mother is a whore, extreme mind-altering experiments on people barely over 18, child soldiers, systematic s*icide, g*nocide, and heavy drug usage just to name a few. With what was shown in act 5, I'm confident that WuWa will likely evolve into a storyline as dark or darker.

Exactly. Even the recent Hanying chapter with Pulao. I thought it's gonna be the happy and jolly break from depression like the Pulao quest but NO. It's a black mirror episode in the end. Still not done with this current patch so I shall see.
If the writers will write something similar to the likes of Surviving Lucem, Cinder Burns, Spiral of Chronos, Wintry Shackles, or Echo Aria to name a few. I'm not worried about WuWa's quality of story and lore moving forward. The delivery will only be the issue and they're able to show they could deliver in Act III-VI.
What I like about their writing as well is that they don't try hard to be edgy. There are sad and light moments. All are warranted, even the deus ex machina tropes (flashbang Liv) are very well written. Same with the snowpierecer train trope like Akdilek with Cinder Burns and eternal engine, the world and people in it felt so alive.
Their writing, at least in PGR, honestly reminds me of novels and books I've read and loved. From George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm to Steinbeck.

Putting aside the hilarity of Tectone attempting to judge Genshin's darkness and maturity when he skips 90% of its content by refusing to read (literacy is for babies)...
Dark things that happen in voiced quests:
1 - Stanley's friend suffers from guilt and PTSD because he watched his friend die in front of him and takes on his persona because he can't come to terms with Stanleys' death and believes he should have died instead.
2 - A Treasure Hoarder is sacrificed to the upside down statue
3 - Four of the five yaksha go insane and kill each other and themselves. Bosacious loses his mind and dies in a place like purgatory after everyone around him goes insane and dies
4 - We discover that hilichurls are innocent humans cursed to endless torment who cannot die and are so tortured by looking at their own faces in their monstrous form that they wear masks at all times to hide from the truth. Among those victims is a little boy who regains his sentience only to go insane when he disobeys his father's instruction and looks at his own face
5 - An innocent goddess with a soft heart is betrayed by her own followers and stabbed in the back as a mercy killing, accidentally killing all of her followers in the process.
6 -The 4 men whose visions were stolen whose minds are broken
7 - Kazuha's friend who braved the lightning's glow and died in front of Kazuha, scarring Kazuha
8 - The story of Tatarasuna, and how Dottore murdered an innocent man, ripped out his heart, and tricked Scaramouche into using it while lying and claiming that the one man who had accepted Scaramouche had betrayed and abandoned him
9 - Teppei, your kind and lovable friend and fanboy is tricked into aging to death without realizing it until it's too late
10 - Collei suffers from a degenerative disease that will slowly kill her, and to save her, her parents sent her off to a scientist as a child who performed horrible human experimentation on her that has left her with PTSD and a deep fear of being touched
11 - Another girl with the same infliction is far worse off and is desperate to attend an annual festival because she likely won't survive to see the next one - only to get that festival canceled, and then trapped in an endless timeloop that's slowly draining her life energy so she'll die in a matter of days instead of months

So much of these can be also be applied to other gacha games.
    - First of all, the art style is Irrelevant. I'm sure you cant think of yourselves plenty of games that is childish in artstyle yet not so much in story and gameplay. There were people that argued Wow was a kids game because of this. It's obvious that genshin is supposed to be a vibrant relaxing exploration game, same as the game it was inspired/copied from, Breath of the wild.
    - Paimon is SUPPOSED to be annoying. It's by design. She's literally Navi from LoZ. Her repeating everything is their way to do it. Can they be more creatively annoying? (much like how she annoys Itto) Yes but that's what they chose.
-The blood argument can also be argued to Wuwa. No blood at all. In fact Genshin has more bloodesque thing going on (Arlechinno uses blood and fire bending as her attacks although the blood is quite masked by the fire)
    - Combat is simple. Why is that? You may have forgotten Genshin is VERY experimental when it came out. It's an openworld "Breath of the Wild" like for smartphones. That's very important. For Smartphones. Another thing is it's a game made by Hoyoverse. StarRail is also very simple for a turn based game.
    - again for the Mini-game events, it's a cozy relaxing game. Not supposed to be hardcore. You cannot change the foundation that the game is designed on just because you think it's not in your level.
    - for this waifu/husbando argument... you say that as if you have never played a gacha game before. It's in every gacha game.
    - Mc as a self insert is just plain stupid. There's so many games with self insert. This might blow your mind. Some games even go so far as make a character creators for their self insert characters, I know crazy. I even go far and to say that the MC is less of a self insert than the ones that doesn't show their MC or these character creation ones.
    - No swearing? You motherfudgin Forking crystal ball. Is Star Rail a kids game?
    - Some of you believed that there's endgame content? yeah you assumed that there will be because... what? nobody said there will be. Even Mihoyo themselves said it very early on that there never be. (Although, they've been adding harder content in events with almost no rewards just to satisfy those demands.) you just assumed from how the usual gacha games you encounter that there will be.
-I cannot say anything about the new "endgame" because I have not tried and don't want to jump to conclusions. from the leaks before they announced it I too thought that it also will be very restrictive but since you can take characters from other players I'm not sure if it really is that restrictive. It will be hard... but isn't that what you want?
I watch you for your other contents now just move on.

    • @hijodelsoldeoriente

I agree but it is a factor specially when coupled with other factors like the writing technique.
For instance, Happy Tree Friends is bright and colorful but I need not say what it is about. Same with Bojack Horseman or Rick and Morty.
It has to do with intention imo, Genshin I think was meant to be your typical epic adventure fantasy anime trope. Aside from the art direction aligning with the genre, we can also consider how it's written to end up in a conclusion that it's catered towards a younger audience.
Paimon reiterating everything is for those who lack a bit of critical thinking or those who have short attention span . So Paimon is there to remind you what's happening. In some games like The Witcher 3 and WuWa, the inner monologue of Geralt and Rover is the paimon but they only often speak of what you think. Paimon most often than not just repeats things in case we don't get it.
I think when we consider more viable indication of whether or not a game's narrative is aimed towards a particular demographic, like the writing style and the genre, we could conclude that Genshin is indeed more targeted towards the kids.

@@warlis4767 Yeah yeah, I'm not saying otherwise or that it is bad when it happens but it doesn't change the fact that the target is still kids. Unless it ends up overwhelmingly unbalanced to that unintended audience, the decisions are gonna be made towards their target.
Genshin is it's own example of this. As far as I know, people have been asking for more endgame since years ago, way before WuWa was a thing. But that people, for as vocal as they were, were not the main demographic. Their voices did not matter.
That's what I mean with knowing where you stand. Not all feedback is valued with the same weight. If you want change and you are not the main target, you are probably not gonna get what you want.

Wuthering Waves is soo much better than Genshin Impact and here are the reasons:
      1. Graphics
      - WW graphics are 10 times better than Potato Impact which is huge for a serious PC gamer like myself.
      2. Combat System
      - WW combat system is also way better(heaps more fun imo) - obviously massive plus.
      3. Artifacts
      - WW have root based artifacts meaning you can farm much as you want, unlike Genshit Impact's super limited resin plus 99% crap artifacts combo.
      - On top of that it's million times easier to get gg or perfect artifacts, so many people already have several perfect or near artifacts in WW.
      - So its day and night compared to game like Genshin..
      4. Wishes
      - WW wish system is super generous compared to Genshin, so many people got 5 stars within 2-3x 10 wishes.
      - WW developers already gave everyone one FREE 5 star hero, you know samething Genshin did for 3rd anniversary.. cough
      - WW doesn't have total scam weapon wish like Genshin.. you get the 5 star weapon you select within 80 pulls(usually much quicker).
      - Have fun getting Furina weapon by getting another two totally useless 5 star weapon first)
Honestly way I see it Genshin died on the release day of WW, personally I've spent tons of $$$ in Genshin but I will NOT be spending another cent on that total rip-off game graphics made for old Nokia phones.

6:01 tbf not even star rail has swearing. in fact they proactively censor boothill
6:57 i'm pretty sure only the chinese version of the game requires the censored versions. you can still have the uncensored version in global
7:23 the fundamental issue is that genshin caters to a casual audience, so ofc they're going to put the most time and effort into expanding what that casual audience enjoys. like it took them 4 years to add new endgame combat bc that wasn't a priority for them; polishing and expanding the core experience was
+ casual gameplay does not inherently mean "for kids". candy crush is super casual and yet the people that play it are mostly 30 y/o women. i think asmon actually has the most accurate take on this situation. games like genshin are for "girls, femboys, and pussies", all people who shy away from the grit, gore, and "git gud" nature of "adult" games
9:48 ... all traits that girls and emasculated men love. and i say this as someone who's probably closer to "femboy" than "man"
9:58 "who are looking for a more mature gaming experience" being the key detail here. adults are not a monolith, different people enjoy different experiences
13:25 i don't remember the last time i thought about teletubbies further than simply the fact that it exists, but unless i'm missing some sort of official lorebook they released, all of these claims sound like conspiracy theories/pure speculation. whereas for genshin, the events are canon and specifically mentioned in the game
14:01 bruh. you can't just say "i skip all side stories" and then act like those side stories don't exist by saying "genshin doesn't have any dark lore"
14:45 it's not part of the main story, but the fact remains that it's in the game for players to discover. and actually, i'm pretty sure the storyline in fontaine with vacher is part of the main story

this was so funny to watch. Lots of good points made honestly; hard to deny that Hoyo avoids putting more mature content at the forefront of their game. The one thing I'd probably disagree with is comparing teletubbies theories w/ the side quests in Genshin, as in regards to teletubbies, its all just speculation from people poking fun at the show, and for Genshin, its content that hoyo has actually put into the game. So saying A = B feels pretty disingenuous, and a bit dismissive of the point Minsleif was trying to make. That being said though, a LOT of kids childrens games or games primarily targeted towards a younger audience have a LOT of mature themes in the background, and sometimes in the fore-front of their story. A better conparison than Teletubbies here would probably be Pokemon, since you really don't have to look THAT deep into the games to find some messed up lore, such as criminal groups harvesting Pokemon organs to make food sold to old rich people, or humans marrying pokemon. Despite all of this though, almost no one would argue that Pokemon is NOT a children's game.

-This comes from me who read the story of PGR, HI3rd, FGO, Counterside, Reverse1999, HSR, GENSHIN and WuWa-
Let's all be real. You just tried so hard to make WuWa story looks goods by downplaying Genshin story as "baby game", and you're losing your argument but still forcing it to your community throat hoping they will spread it around. (And also, to farm money through this drama)
Listen man, try as hard as you can, but WuWa story is not good written enough due to massive story revamp in short time and rushed launch. Only act 5-6 is bearable and can be said as "good". But don't forget in Act 6, Jiyan just casually let an amnesia guy lead the army he loved like a family, A GUY HE JUST MET LESS THAN 5 MIN.
Now you wanna talk about Genshin censorship? Ever heard of CCP or game censorship in China? How many gacha games we play actually portray blood like nothing? And you're expecting that from a game that's made for everyone and casual gamers?
Plus, what kind of "baby" do you expect to understand anything about Inazuma politics? Or even spend HOURS into 1 act of Sumeru arc? Most of them already died burned out without actually understand or paying attention to the story. And how do you even explain the strong sexual implication in Li Yue's 2nd Act, of Ying Er's heavy dialogue implication on mas*turbation during potion making?
Tectone, you have no right to comment on Genshin story when most of the time you just watch summary on youtube without actually playing through the story yourself no matter what's your reason are.
And btw, your LOOOOVE HSR right? Should I also consider it as "Baby game" since there are Pom Pom and also that Clockie mickey mouse? They act cutesier, meant like doing it for kids way more than Paimon ever did in the past 4 years.
At the end, the conclusion is you can't tell the difference between "Casual game story" and "Children game story". Simple as that.

Knowing Mihoyo from their GGZ and early Honkai Impact days, Genshin was almost definitely not made for kids originally. But they probably had to tone things down due to their increasing popularity getting the attention of the CCP. I mean, look at the characters who got "new outfits" from censorship. You don't design characters like that if it's intended for kids, and even that is relatively tame compared to what they've done in the past. Hoyo likes making attractive women. If it were up to them, most of the characters would probably have half as much clothing as they currently do, lmfao.
But once they were forced to tone it down anyway, and with such a big, casual audience, they probably just said "eff it" and rolled with it and decided to go full casual and let the money flow in while doing the bare minimum.

@Tectone My take: I do NOT believe Genshin impact is a game specifically made for children. I think it was made to appeal to an extremely wide demographic of casuals, casuals who’ve might not of even played a video game before. That’s why the “combat” is so lobotomizingly simple. It was the perfect starter game for the gargantuan amount of people that started getting into anime during the pandemic lock down, the perfect gateway to get into gaming for the people who didn’t own a console or a pc since it was so easily accessible being free and on mobile. I also find it hard to imagine that a game intended for specifically children would implement such prominent jiggle physics which HSR doesn’t even have. The Genshin impact story on occasion does tackle darker themes as well, it isn’t always all sunshine and rainbows at all times, but I digress. Why make a gacha game specifically for children? The whole point is to get you to spend money on characters. Why make a gacha game specifically for an audience who don’t even have any money to whale on characters? While I do believe Genshin tries to appeal to children in a lot of aspects, I highly doubt children were the only audience hoyo was trying to appeal to. But at the end of the day this is just my take, so take it how you will.

Ya know. After seeing this video. It really sums up the whole thing about Genshin. It's really, in fact, a kids game.
As with previous comments and debates, I have. Yes, the lore will have some dark elements, such as the ANIME (which BTW will cover the dark themes of genshin upfront. Which is what genshin could have been in that structure)
And the short clips we get on UA-cam, which do, in fact, show more mature themes (Blood. Strong language, etc)

So yes, the game is very kid friendly, but the anime and clips are definitely not kid friendly.

I will add, however, that i have a very mentally and physically draining job, and i can very much appreciate having a cozy, adhd-pilled game i can unplug my brain to at the end of the day. Kids' content is not *bad* content and can be entertaining and enjoyable to adults as well. Bluey is a shining example of that.
Is bluey for everyone? No. Is genshin for everyone? Definitely not. But it has helped me calm down from many stressful days over the years. Do i wish there was some more Grit in there? Sure. I mean the same argument about it being made for a younger audience could be made for Breath of the Wild and the Mario games and they can be pretty fun even as an adult. Heck sometimes (with Zelda in specific) they even tackle more serious themes and circunstances in between just look at Majora's Mask or the Shadow Temple in OoT). A simplistic gameplay loop is not necessarily a detriment and in some cases it can help the game. And even then people find ways to make a simplistic system take skill and thinking on a very simple game at the surface. It's why i love speedruns and challenge runs from such games. In a more crude term it "puts skill in a skilless game" so to say which i find pretty neat.
And like you said sometimes you just want that quick dopamine after a hard day at work. It's why playing stuff like Animal Crossing or Minecraft for that matter after a hard day can be quite relaxing. I say people should just play what they wanna play be it Dark Souls or Wind Waker. Being made for a younger audience doesn't necessarily make a game unfun as an adult.

I really agree with minsleif in this. Genshin is not necessarily meant for kids, but it is presented in such a way. Some of the things you directly look at are pretty simple ie the enemies are easy to beat etc etc. But tectone saying that you really have to look deep to find the dark lore isnt correct here. You literally have to complete the sunchildren quest in order to explore enkanomiya. That quest in quite dark. I didnt have to reas lots of in game books to find that out.
The tsurumi island quest is also quite dark but its necessary in order to remove the fog so you have to see the dark stuff in order to unlock a cettain area.
Then theres the dainsleif quest which contains some really dark stuff. The wriothesly world quest etc.
Of course, having dark themes doesnt exclude it from being children centred. Lots of dark tales have been told to children in the past. But saying that you really have to look for the dark part is inaccurate
Though im aware that tectone doesnt like reading through unvoiced dialogue which many share the same opinion otherwise there wouldnt be many complaints about the aranara quest to begin with. But still, its important to put all things into perspective
Fan theories eg in teletubbies isnt equal to a game that openly shows the dark themes if you read through the dialogue
Tectone does say that its not in the forefront, but the dainsleif quest begs to differ. The quest keeps getting darker as time goes on, like the fact that the people in khanreah were wiped out simply for not worshiping the archons and believing in their ability to rule themselves, then they were turned into hilichurls who we fight every day as mobs. We've seen the caribert plot and the backstory of various characters etc. Its not that hard to find these dark themes. I personally like genshin because of the lore. Because no matter what tectone says, its really good. Not just the archon quest, but other stuff as well. I watch guys like minsleif and murderofbirds because of this stuff
To be honest, honkai star rail is way more children centered than genshin since it doesnt have as many prevalent dark themes as genshin.
However, tectone approaches this game from a gamer stand point, not as a reader and such. Thats why he skips the voiced dialogue and thats entirely fine. You enjoy the game as you want to and if you dont, thats fine. For my case, i enjoy genshin coz of the lore and star rail a bit more because its more fun to play. So im more of a hardcore gamer in star rail than genshin since its harder to explore and do genshin than it is to do star rail. And if thats the perspective that tectone comes with, thats entirely fine. Im just saying all this to put it into perspective.
Playing genshin and being told its a children's game is essentially saying that anime is for kids. Which is why anime was frowned upon when we were younger. I mean, the goofy animation eg in one piece and the fact that its animated in the first place gives the impression that its "for kids" but once you look into it and watch some more variety etc, youll be able to see that its much more than that. That anime has its own genres, some of which are not aimed for kids. Also, adult content doesnt only revolve around sex, gore and stuff but also around mature themes that kids shouldnt be exposed to. Genshin has plenty of that and if you just play the game not for the combat alone and read the text on screen, youll just see that
TLDR: genshin's dark themes arent hidden, they are present in the world and are sometimes compulsory to do in order to explore the areas on the map and get character building materials etc etc. But you wont experince it if you skip all invoiced dialogue.
Genshin gameplay is alot more boring if you approach it from a gamer standpoint as tectone does. Star rail is way more fun in this case, which is why i play it more often than genshin. Coz doing stuff in that game is just more fun than it is for genshin.
So lore enjoyers and gamers have a different experince with the game. One obviously sees how complex the story is while the other only notices how boring the combat is and tectone should consider this before calling the game objectively bad
Mature story themes: absolutely present and is in the forefront of you really care to understand the content in the game(isnt 2%as tectone says but more of about 70% as mentioned above)
Mature gaming themes(difficult bosses and endgame content): abysmal, not present at all

I think most of the things you suggested as "these are reasons why GI is aimed at kids" are them adhering to the rules that worldwide games(and sometimes games made in China) have to adhere to in order to meet certain criteria for available in China. The fact that WuWa managed to get away with more without hitting the country's censorship(which from what I know can be completely arbitrary on who they enforce on or not) is actually pretty impressive, but also risky and I think Hoyo just leaned toward more security so they wouldn't be punished later. Especially after it got as big as it did.

What "more" did Wuwa get away with? It's just as much of a "baby" game in his words. Just because the world is a little less colorful in some places?

tbh addressing the story for children argument, something like lion king as an example might be more appropriate because you know the kid witness his dad died in front of his eyes. Something as dark as that exist in stories for children. And also Genshin's age rating is PEGI-12 when I look it up on Google so it all make sense.

I would say Genshi is made for Teens but a large amount of its' player base are kids so they have incorporated many kid friendly elements (Piamon becoming more child like and basically handhold you through the story is a good example of that). You can't say that the Artifacts system is Kid friendly. I have a friend who is a grown adult who didnt watch any UA-cam videos. The guy had Deluc with Noel best in slot 4 Star Sword while run Wondering Troup with Instructor pieces. That was his best built character. This guy had 100% map and Quest completion. He could not pass Spiral Abyss 10 and has never 36 star the content. I of course explain how the system works and his account doing much better but this guy had all the 5 stars in the game with some signature weapons. He wasnt a wale. Just stupid lucky.

genshin is not for kids, and here is why. A company who specifically designs a gacha game, isn't looking to design it for a kids audience cause well here the the kicker..... they don't have jobs yeah. So it makes sense for them to target a more mature audience cause guess what thats where the $$$ is at.

From the second I hopped on genshin for the first time years ago I immediately got the sense that GI was intended for a younger audience that doesn’t mean the game is bad I still enjoy and play it to this day if anyone was around for the PS2, GameCube, and even original Xbox era when I was really young there were a lot of games intended for a younger audience that had more mature themes, dialogue, and storyline elements sprinkled in here and there to provide some shock value or even comedic relief at times to the younger audience and a lot of those older games had even more edgy things in them than GI does and they were considered kids games so I’m not quite sure what so many people are upset about it changes nothing if you enjoy the game you enjoy the game that’s all that matters

This man is coping so hard it’s getting sad.
It feels like Tec needs to talk about genshin every day of his life just to prove to himself that he is right in not playing it.
You don’t need an 18 minutes analysis of the game to explain why isn’t as good as your new game. Which is not as “mature” and “adult” and grown-up as your new game. That’s pure cringe.
Just move on dude. If you were really over this you wouldn’t be talking about it. You sound like the guy that keeps talking about his ex while he hangs with his date; It’s honestly sad to look at, and makes your new relationship (or in this case, the new game you are advocating for) terrible. WuWa feels literally like rebound sex for gamers, and I think it’s not the game’s faults but the obnoxious community of bitter former genshin players that are ruining the experience for me and most of the more casual players.
This video was an absolute joke, and a sad one at that. I remember when I thought you were actually fun and entertaining, I miss those days. Please stop sparkling controversies just to stay relevant, just go back to being good at what you do and enjoying it.

I think the "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon" series does darkness in children targeted games right. Especially "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity", which was so good I actually suspect it to be a least a little bit of a social commentary about society. But the maturity rating of games like "Genshin Impact" cripple how intense their darkness can be, and only makes their story suffer. It happened to "Naruto", and it's happening to Genshin.
