- Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is facing calls to recuse himself from cases before the high court involving former President Donald Trump after reports emerged of an inverted flag flown outside his home in January 2021. Whenever judges are appointed to the supreme court there will always be s division in the country. All judges should be elected to the court by the people. Only then can a judge deliever a verdict based on the law not on his or her affiliation to a party.

Actually, the upside-down U.S. flag has legitimate historical roots. Mariners have traditionally flown the U.S. flag upside down to signal that their vessel is in dire straits. And some Confederate forces flew the U.S. flag upside down as a symbol of their rebellion during the Civil War. And anti-war activists frequently displayed the American flag upside down as a symbol of opposition to the Vietnam War. Even Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were known to speak out against racial discrimination while displaying an inverted U.S. flag.
But most recently, and disturbingly, flying the flag upside down was co-opted as a symbol of the "Stop the Steal" movement created by Republican political operative Roger Stone in 2016 to promote the illegitimate conspiracy theory.
