Brick Pattern Instructions in the description!
By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have made a little mosaic swatch of a simple brick pattern, which happens to be the foundation of quite a few cute and easy projects (like the Ballband Dishcloth above).
You’ll also learn how to switch colors neatly when making stripes (which is key in mosaic knitting because you only knit one color at a time, so you have to alternate between the yarns every couple rows - read: stripes).
Lastly, you’ll learn my favorite quick tip for binding off that will make any swatch lay flat and even (gotta love that).
Here’s the swatch we’ll be making:
Easy Mosaic Brick Pattern - Sample Swatch Tutorial
Row 1: (RS): With MC: K.
    Row 2: (WS): Purl.
Row 3: Switch to CC: *K5, Sl 1, rep from * to last 5 sts, end k5.
    Row 4: *P5, Sl 1, rep from * to last 5 sts, end p5.
Row 5: With MC, repeat row 1.
    Row 6: Repeat row 2.
    Row 7: With CC, k2, *Sl 1, k5, rep from * to last 3 sts, end Sl 1, k2.
    Row 8: P2, Sl 1, *p5, Sl 1, rep from * to last 3 sts, end p2.
    Row 9: With MC: K.
Row 10 (WS): BO in knit¹.
¹“Bind off in knit” means knit each stitch as you bind it off (even though you’re on the WS).
Knitting the whole swatch should take 20-30 minutes (that’s just a guess). My video is about 10 minutes long, and I show you everything except for the plain knitting rows.
    Prepare Your Yarn and Needles
    Bazinga chunky self striping yarn
Chunky yarn is my favorite for practice swatches
Time to get your yarn and needles out! Find two colors of yarn that are the same weight, that is, two worsted-weight yarns, two bulky-weight yarns, etc.
Get a pair of straight needles in the size recommended on your yarn band (US size 7 for worsted weight and US size 9 for bulky weight).
Bulky yarn is my favorite choice of weights for swatching and learning new techniques.
Next, look over the instructions for the Easy Mosaic Brick Pattern below. If you understand most of the abbreviations, give it a go and try to knit the swatch on your own!
Try the Swatch On Your Own First
The reason I want you to try this swatch on your own first is because when you watch the video with me, you will have some experience and context. You also might have some questions you want answered. It’s also good practice in just trusting yourself to read a new pattern, uninfluenced by any prior explanation.
If you don’t want to knit the swatch on your own, or don’t understand the pattern instructions, that’s ok - I’ve explained everything in the videos and in the photo tutorials that follow.
(In my upcoming mosaic knitting video class, Fantastic Mosaics, I give you tips and troubleshooting videos to help you get the most out of this tutorial, so if you have any trouble at all, know that there’s more than just what you see here.)
Last thing before you get started - If you prefer photo tutorials to video (or if you just need a reminder as you’re working through the swatch), there are detailed step-by-step photo instructions on my blog post: knitfreedom.com/color-knitting....
In this mosaic knitting video I use blue for my MC (main color) and yellow for my CC (contrasting color).

Liat, I love your videos!! You taught me how to knit 3-1/2 years ago through your videos. I have all of your ebooks and I have learned so much from you. I wish you were on here posting a "weekly" tip or class for all of us "Liat Gat" lovers out here and we could look forward in seeing you and learning a little something from you every week. Thanks for posting this mosaic video. You always make every pattern look easy to knit with no worries. That's why I love your work.

extremely detailed and easy to follow instructions - thank you! I can see every move of the needles and the yarns - just what I need. Too many instructional videos have the artist hiding their work, and it becomes a "watch me knit this" video instead of instructions. Yours are the best I've ever seen. Do you have one on socks? Maybe I could finally learn!

Hi Gale, thank you so much for this high praise! My motto is "When people watch videos designed for their success, learning is inevitable and fun." So all my videos are designed for your success. Anyway, I definitely have videos on socks as I think socks are one of the best (and most fun) projects a knitter could ever do to increase their skill and enjoyment of knitting. I recommend you start with toe-up socks. Here is the link: www.knitfreedom.com/shop/toe-up-socks. We are actually running a group knitalong for toe-up socks that starts tomorrow! Signups are still open. You can definitely finally learn to do socks, and we can help! Here is the link: www.knitfreedom.com/shop/august-2022-toe-up-socks-class-and-knitalong/ You can reach me here or at happiness@knitfreedom.com if you need any support in your knitting. -Liat

Hi there, I saw your question about slipping stitches purlwise vs knitwise, although it seems you have now edited your comment. I always slip stitches purlwise unless that pattern says otherwise. When you slip them knitwise, they get twisted, which may not be part of the design. Cheers!

Interesting introduction to Mosaic; however, there is a major error in Row 8: the presenter omits (in the written pattern) the SL1 after purling the first 2 sts, and at end: to last 3 sts...p2. should be "sl1, p2". Very frustrating for a rank beginner to see such errors in a written pattern.

Thanks a lot. If I want to make a jumper with this pattern and the jumper takes 8 yarns , how many yarns go for the secondary color and how many go for the main color? I have a feeling that the secondary one takes more shaping mosaics and the main one shapes the edges between the mosaics. No?

Row 8 confuses me. If you end with 3 stitches, what am I supposed to do with them? The instructions say "end p2" but if there are three, what to do?

    • @joycedudzinski9415
      @joycedudzinski9415 8 років тому

I was confused too, but looking at row 7 where it says...to last 3 sts, end Sl, k2.....I think that row 8 should read..to last 3 sts, you have to Sl 1 and end with P2...which gives you the total of three stitch thats needed to be worked. A typo error in pattern.

  • @shahilagh

Have you knitted mosaics pattern that combines a plain color and a variegated yarn ? Then which yarn to choose as secondary and core colors? I am going to use mosaic to break the variegated yarn so that it doesn’t become strips .... for a pullover .... but not sure which one to choose a primary? If I use the variegated yarn for mosaics -secondary, it helps to break but doesn’t still shape strips?or should I use variegated as the main color and the plain color as secondary shaping the mosaics ? Sorry I know I asked a complicated question

    • @Knitfreedom
      @Knitfreedom  3 роки тому +2

Sounds like an awesome project! The best way to decide which to use for the primary and contrasting colors is to knit up gauge swatches of each combination and see which you like more. It's also a great opportunity to check your gauge so your pullover fits perfectly :) Happy swatching!

      Hi Zubaida,

Thank you so much for writing in! I am so sorry for the delayed response. To answer your question, row 10 in the video is a bind-off row in the knit stitch. So it is different than row 1. It is telling you how to bind off your knitting when you are ready. If you wanted to continue knitting the pattern and not bind off, you would repeat rows 9, and 10 like you did in rows 1 and 2 (knit one row, then purl one row in MC). If this doesn't quite answer your question, please email me at happiness@knitfreedom.com. I would be more than happy to explain it more clearly or even write down the pattern further for you 😊 Thank you again for getting in touch!
