The characters look bland because they're scared to use color, it feels like. 18:44 Except Jeffrey Katzenberg's editing of the Black Cauldron was likely the single biggest contributor to its commercial failure. Seriously. The edits he made were poorly done, and failed to take into account the soundtrack, leading to large and noticeable skips in the music. They also removed several crucial parts, making the scenes around them make less sense. Probably the worst thing though, was that while no amount of editing could've taken away enough of the horror elements to truly make "normies" consider it family friendly, the editing did manage to remove just enough to eliminate the crowning moments of the horror elements which could've drawn in more of the horror crowd.

Saberspark trying to say "I'm a fan of anthropamorfic animals." Without sounding like he's admitting to being a furry is the funniest thing in this video.
Roy LOVED those tigers. When I was a child, there was a pay-per-view behind the scenes taping of a Siegfried and Roy performance that my mom let me stay up and watch with her (that was a big deal back in the 90's, kids. 🤣) And half of the show was just Roy making sure that he was providing the best life he possibly could for his cats. On and off stage. Even after his attack, and the show ended, he made sure that his cats would never want for anything.
I regret that I never got to see one of their shows. I remember how big a deal they were back then and, as a kid, it always sounded so cool. Sadly there's only so much power a middle schooler has on vacation suggestions.
I heard that they wanted to make an autobiographical documentary a few years ago. I think their last show was taped too. . . Now I'm going to be on ebay all night looking for an old vhs. 🤣
I think it’s amazing that he knew the risks and when the stoke happened he made sure the tiger was okay, it is an animal, it was acting on instinct, not reason.
Father of the Pride doing it's whole "humans are interesting while the animals do bland stuff" thing actually reminds me of an anime, Nichijou. In that anime there are also 2 groups we follow, a group of school girls, and a group of a child scientist with a robot friend she created and a cat she gave the ability to talk to. The school girls have insane imaginations and do crazy and weird stuff daily, while the scientist's house is mostly normal issues and down to earth problems, just with a crazy cast and setting. There's a juxtaposition there that is interesting, and I'm not sure of Father of the Pride did that intentionally, but it does make sense.
I guess you're right, but its not as quality as the masterpiece that is nichijou (which in my opinion is criminally underrated, although ive seen its gotten more attention recently) but thanks my dude for bringing it up in your comment... the people must know!
Would you say that Nichijou did it well, or were the stories that took place in the scientist's house boring like in Father of the Pride? I don't know if I've ever heard of this anime, but I might check it out.
@@catbatrat1760 Well, yes. Nichijou is a fantastic anime. Absolutely hilarious. Another way of putting it is that the school takes mundane things and treats them as incredible crazy, while the crazy things of the shinonome household are used for mundane jokes (but funny jokes nonetheless). In any case, this dynamic only lasts for around the first half of the anime. For the second half the characters of both plots actually meet and start mingling and so do the tones. If you aren't sold, just search for clips in youtube. Is a relatively popular show so there are many clips uploaded.

the joe of that scene was that the Snail is the word comedian and when he’s called out as such he insults the person the joke was never a gay bashing joke it was making fun of the fact the snail is a bad comedian.
22:50 I think it's a combination of four things: 1) The lighting is extremely minimal. Everything appears to be rendered under two-point lighting: one directional light and one softbox light to make the first light's shadows really muted and understated. This reduces the contrast in the shot a great deal, which - while it makes everything really easy to see, it doesn't exactly make for a dynamic and interesting environment. The intended effect seems to be to make it look more like a 'traditional' cartoon, but... 2) The entire color palette is pretty desaturated. All of the colors have a low saturation value to make for a more muted, 'realistic' quality to everything. This would be the perfect color palette for a more serious affair... But the lack of contrast creates a subdued quality that doesn't mesh well with either the character designs or the overall tone of the show. It doesn't need to go full _Problem Solverz_ but bringing in a bit more color would definitely help. 3) The character designs need more to them. Aside from the kids (who are at least cute) there is nothing especially eye-catching about the designs, especially with the aforementioned saturation issue. About the only character with a recognizable design is Grandpa, primarily because he's basically a knock-off anthro Scar. 4) The animation lacks energy. This one would be harder to explain if not for the helpfully-placed clip of Sully at 22:12 for comparison purposes. See how Sully's movement has energy to it, even when he's not moving most of his body? Compare this to the animation of Dad Lion at 22:54 where, in spite of running and moving his entire body, there just isn't any power behind it or weight to his movements. This has been my attempt to explain something that probably didn't need explaining using expertise I don't actually have!
I was thinking the same about the lighting, it's very basic which makes everything look bland. You have to remember when this came out however. Technology and animation artistic theory has improved significantly since then, so it's not really fair to compare it to modern day standards. It's also not fair to compare it to a movie for animation quality, since movies can get much more detail attention than a TV show.
@@Daggett1122 The comparison isn't fair, I'll readily admit. The goal is more to explain why something doesn't seem to be working, by comparing it to something that does.
Wait this wasn’t just a childhood fever dream??? I literally forgot this existed, I watched it ALL the time but it never completely stuck with me as an actual show that existed lmao
Re: The house and backgrounds: Pay attention to the color balance. Notice how all the house walls are boring washed out low intensity colors. Edit: Doesn't help that the lions are all very visually monochromatic. Compare this to the Simpsons where each character has different colors of clothing and hair.
I'm pretty sure that was all on purpose though...it was another way of highlighting the differences between the rainbow glitz and glamor of *VEGAS* versus the family drama of day to day life.
@@HaydenX I feel like it could have been done better than having it be washed out, like maybe use warmer, plainer color schemes and higher contrast, poppy color schemes instead of just washing it out. The chunk of the show happens in the home part and its really not great to have that chunk be so..... visually boring and bland.
23:13 I'm not sure if anyone in the comments talked about this (there's probably someone tho), but the feeling of blandness probably comes from the colour scheme of everything. All the colours are yellowish or brownish, making them all blend together in such a way that nothing stands out anymore unless it's a different colour. Never watched the show, but from the scenes you showed in this video that's the impression I have. That's why shows like (to use one of your examples) Miraculous Ladybug stand out more! The colour palettes are different from character to character and setting to setting (but not overdone in a way that confuses the viewer and makes it difficult to pinpoint what's supposed to stand out anymore).
they should've used the technique the crew for my life as a teenaged robot used. Make the background first then decide the color pallet for the charectors to make them stand out
19:42 Did NOT see that coming. Larry wanted Donkey to announce that they're friends; meanwhile, Kate slept with friggin' Tony the Tiger. In fact, Tony the Tiger is in Family Guy... Actually, that connects these two series in a way...

Roy LOVED those tigers. When I was a child, there was a pay-per-view behind the scenes taping of a Siegfried and Roy performance that my mom let me stay up and watch with her (that was a big deal back in the 90's, kids. 🤣)
And half of the show was just Roy making sure that he was providing the best life he possibly could for his cats.
that's pretty awesome of him!
I think it’s amazing that he knew the risks and when the stoke happened he made sure the tiger was okay, it is an animal, it was acting on instinct, not reason.
I love that man's passion for his animals..
Oh I love nichijou!
Where can I watch it
I guess you're right, but its not as quality as the masterpiece that is nichijou (which in my opinion is criminally underrated, although ive seen its gotten more attention recently) but thanks my dude for bringing it up in your comment... the people must know!

22:50
I think it's a combination of four things:
1) The lighting is extremely minimal.
@@Daggett1122
The comparison isn't fair, I'll readily admit.
The goal is more to explain why something doesn't seem to be working, by comparing it to something that does.
When you come back to old saberspark videos and remember that The actor for the old lion died. RIP Carl
That's what that was, I was having trouble thinking about what was wrong as well.
Nice breakdown of the colors.
I bet it would look much better if you just played with the lighting and colors saturation.
Exactly!
Yeah its use of colors and lighting are really dull and boring for the most part.
they should've used the technique the crew for my life as a teenaged robot used. Make the background first then decide the color pallet for the charectors to make them stand out
19:42 Did NOT see that coming. Larry wanted Donkey to announce that they're friends; meanwhile, Kate slept with friggin' Tony the Tiger. Whiiiiiich means Shrek, Tony, and Father of the Pride are all in one expanded universe. "They're GRRRRR-REAT!!"
Reminds me of the time that we learned Lois Griffin slept with Gene Simmons from Kiss. In fact, Tony the Tiger is in Family Guy... Actually, that connects these two series in a way... I wonder how many connecting threads there are between different animated series, and what the full animated series expanded universe looks like...

That’s putting it lightly
man, when he brought that show up i felt deep dark buried memories come rushing back Vietnam flashback style. I swear to god I thought that entire thing was some surreal fever dream i had as a kid...
That thing was real?! Thought I imagine the whole show when I was younger
I almost used the word "bizarre" to describe that show but that's like saying the sun is "a bit warm".
I didn't know it was a show. I thought it was just that one clip that gets shared around on UA-cam, like a freaky shitpost type of thing. I don't want to imagine a full show of that.
When I was younger, I always thought I was just too young to understand what was going on. Looking at videos of it as I’m 18 hasn’t much improved my understanding.
Father of the pride : oh we are some new amazing sitcom using animals The Dinosaurs: I’m a joke to you?
