  • I desperately needed some closet space! So I broke down and went with the IKEA PAX wardrobe system. But due to stocking issues and prices, I opted to go with some pieces I found on Facebook Marketplace! Road trip!
The secondhand PAX units I found were in pretty good shape - but had some damage to the back panels. Check out how I fixed them!
Also, be sure to watch until the end to see my plans for my bedroom makeover! I need your input - so drop a comment to share your thoughts!

Hey Andrew! Another great video. Since you asked, i am going to provide my thoughts.
    1. Yes, turn the closet bext to the fireplace into built-ins.
    2. Yes, open the Guest Room to your room to allow light and be able to close it off when needed.
    3. Yes, do a straight line of wardrobes to use all of the drawers and allow the door to open fully.
As always, thanks for asking fir unput. It is fun to be on your Journey. It was so fantastic to se you and Dad on the Road Trip! Be well - Don

I did my whole bedroom in grass cloth wallpaper in my last apartment in Florida and LOVED it! I live just outside of Savannah, GA now. Just got done building my house. I was my own GC and the hardest part was finding a reasonable priced carpenter to do the custom walk in closets I wanted so I ended up with a temporary, albeit wood, slap happy job that works for now. I think I need to borrow your dad 😂

This video is 2 months old, so you've probably already completed this project, but here goes. Put three cabinets in a row. Keep your drawers. You can add a mirror on wall to right behind the doorway. Add a built in next to fireplace to tie in. Take out closet and often to guest room. I love your blue sofa!

I’ve been researching and planning for ikea pax myself. I’ve read and heard alike that the corner configuration actually wastes space in the corner because you’re basically sectioning out the very back corner. With that and all else you’ve considered, I vote go with all on one wall and potentially add the third 19” skinny. Put the full length mirror on the wall behind the swinging door. New follower and love your videos! And go dawgs ❤

We have used all the shelves and rods to maximize the space in our old closets. IYKYK

Loved seeing the reissued window in the background at the start of this... Also, now that I know that you're doing up a 30s house, the design on the window etc makes a lot more sense. It does give me strong art deco vibes. And your work on the bathroom - yes, totally so art deco, love it! I did cringe a bit at the idea of painting whole wall, including fireplace, in the bedroom. Not because of the changes to old property so much (in the UK, anything from the 1930s is hardly an old property... even Victorian 1830s would be bog standard here!), but just because I worry it'd be a bit too oppressive maybe, though I get the point about darker spaces for cosiness. I love so many of the pieces you have been gathering, and love to see a place with any amount of history being thoughtfully and caringly refurbished, so go you!! Awesome...

    • @REISSUED
      @REISSUED  Рік тому

Thanks for much for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment! It’s crazy to think of how old most properties are in the UK! That must be amazing. I’m really honored and inspired to have a relatively old property here in the US… I love the history of older spaces… one of the things I loved about NYC when I lived there. I hear ya about the black in the bedroom… I’m not 💯 on that decision yet. I’m planning to start with the ceiling and see how that feels. I’m not scared of black but I don’t want to lose too much definition in the fireplace or in any built ins I add.

    • @iamsherlocked2
      @iamsherlocked2 Рік тому +4

@@REISSUED thank you so much for replying! I think that’s a great idea to start with ceiling first and then decide. I definitely think the fireplace might suffer from loss of definition so can see why you’d be concerned there. Oh my gosh the history is amazing to be sure. I couldn’t survive without it. I live in the most Tudor city in the UK (highest number of Tudor age or older streets remaining). The cathedral dates back to the late 11th century around about 1096 I believe. Right behind my flat there is a street with 40 or so places dated between 1500 and 1650 and also the oldest residential building still in the city built in 11-something. And we have more than one pub still in use from the 1200s. The market place is the only market place in all Europe that has been in continuous use in the same site beneath the Norman castle for 900+ years. It’s crazy but glorious. And one of so few places where a cathedral is still the only high rise you can see. One of the things I love most about it. Any history lover can do no better really haha. I love the 30s tho as I have a real obsession with 20-40s decor and style which makes me super jealous and interested in your lovely house project. :-) So invested haha.

Ok, I won't try this at home lol Thanks for letting us know because I can't afford stress. It already looks great, I can't to see what you decide!! No corner unit, 3 full wardrobes means more storage and that door opens right up, is better. You can place a floor mirror on the right side of your bedroom door. I'd open up the door next door for more light because there's an option for a lock. I'd definitely do a built-in draws and shelves for the other cupboard, it will definitely look great!

    1) yes to axing the shallow closet, you can reuse the architectural elements when missing from other doors and windows (plinth corners) 2) yes to creating a connecting door 🚪 between rooms, I wanted to have it both ways in my house, so I got wardrobes from the restore, and will eventually put them on casters or furniture dollies, so they can be wheeled out of the way, a secret door if you will! 3) I like doing the 2 wardrobes and a 19 inch one along one wall, to not lose the drawers, and also it starts to feel too massive near the door, imho!
just discovered your channel, subscribed, i’m an avid repurposing person, and loved your take on fast furniture…

I literally have the exact same configuration of Pax in my closet. The 2 large Pax wardrobes specifically. I chose to not use the backing and I wallpapered the back wall in my closet a black and white mural of a rooftop sketch of Paris. I am waiting on the corner piece as its back ordered currently. I too am wondering if I should just do a 19” Pax instead as a corner unit can take up valuable space. However something to consider is that instead of your interior door swinging all the way to the wall it would stop against the side of wardrobe creating a little hallway space into your bedroom. I like the narrow closet idea of a built in and I’m all about flow in a home! New sub here you have a great channel and bonus love how your parents help out!

Love your idea for the built-in shelves next to the fireplace. Would be much more functional storage and give more styling opportunities!
My two cents on opening up that closet... I think making any bedroom, but especially the primary suite less private would hurt the resale value of the home even if it's historically accurate - and it's a missed opportunity for more built-ins or reconfiguring the closet to be more functional. That being said, designing your home around a mythical future owner's needs (and a random internet stranger's opinions) and not your own does nothing for your immediate quality of life so whatever you decide I hope it feels right and you're excited about it!
If you don't have a need to reallocate that baseboard trim to another part of your home maybe consider building up the pax units on a base frame so you can trim out the bottom! Would give a really incredible built-in look
Thanks so much for sharing your journey! I just found your channel and I'm binging your whole home series and loving every second.

When doing paste wallpaper, each roll has a lot number that should match for best results. Also, I found out that with lines like that, rather than concentrating on the top matching exactly, if I worried more about the middle where the gaze falls, it looked better. Yes, it might be a little off at the top or bottom, but where people look most was fixed.
I’ve never done peel and stick paper but I have done old school contact paper which I think is the basis for this. It’s a pain even without a pattern of lines. Lol

I agree with the idea of removing the closet door and replacing with a shelving unit or dresser. I love that idea of reopening the doorway between the rooms. It will allow you to enjoy all of your house. I have a spare/guest room which saddens me at times with how little I actually use it lol.
Oh boy... The wardrobe options are quite a conundrum. I think the door not opening all the way would bother me. I would personally make it one flat wall.

LOVE the idea of painting the wall black and the idea of removing the right door for built-ins around the fireplace! Honestly, I could see you doing the same on the left side. That would allow you to keep some storage, maybe even adding a chair to that nook. It would nod to symmetry without being perfectly symmetrical since the spacing and depth are slightly different on either side. I like honoring the history of the house, but losing some privacy doesn't seem worth it to me. On the other hand, I hear you about natural light.
Awkward spacing is hard! I wouldn't add the corner Pax unit, but maybe add the 19 inch or doing the full length mirror (or consider mounting a full-length to the cabinet)?
I also like that you went for centering the bed in the room and ignoring the window; I did the same in my room. The only difference is I added floor-to-ceiling curtains - when closed you can't even tell it's off center. I'm a light-sensitive sleeper, so I appreciate the function and the drama!

Hey there! Love your thoughts about the built ins! Definitely something to keep in mind… I’m not opposed to curtains other than that I want to keep a strong architectural look on that wall to balance the softness of the bed. Plus I’m not a light sensitive sleeper at all and I worry that the curtains would be hard to reach. Lots to think about! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! ❤️

Andrew one thing about that paper is that the repeat is not always where you think it is, or where it should be. Without taking the backing off try to line it up as many as 6 squares away, although it looks like it would be square to square, the repeat could be 18" away. Also, you have to be really careful not to stretch it at the same time. This is just the crappy way they printed it. Another reason you are suppose to get all the same run and lot. It really aggravates me when your seams don't match, looks like you did a bad job.
It is inside the cabinet and you are the only one that knows the problem, don't worry about it.

i felt your pain with that wallpaper. such a nice dad to work with you.
    1. i totally agree w/ @SaadAlDossary on the curtain plan- that would really balance that space behind the bed. as it is, it's very jarring. I also kind of like his idea about painting the entire wall (fireplace & closet doors) black, but i think that would actually make it look more modern- which i think is better (less busy)
    2. i know a corner unit is a big space saver but i think better to go for 3 units side by side. it will look cleaner & streamlined that way. and maybe it's just me but a wardrobe w/ a corner unit screams I am PAX.
    3. yes, i love that idea of removing the small closet in the corner & putting in built in shelves - more interesting, it will look (& be lol) built in). (but i don't know about painting the built in black too...., that would be pretty intense).
    4. and yesi would put in a doorway connecting the 2 rooms . it's easy to close & lock when you have guests, & more light is always better. FLOW is important.

I agree with taking out the door for the built ins, but you are going to need closed storage especially in the bedroom, so I personally wouldn't open up the small closet to the guest bedroom, it would just be wasted space I fear.
For the pax, I'd say all on a single wall and the mirror behind the door, or on the wall near the future built-ins, so you have some natural light coming in and you can always put light over the mirror or around it for a better light. I used to have my mirror in a dark corner of the house and I couldn't see much, so that's why I'm talking about lights and where and how they hit you.

I'd seriously consider opening that little shallow closet right up, not just remove the door, and go with drawers, and then shelves above. Re-opening the space between the two rooms is a nice idea, depends how often you have guests use that room, how light a sleeper you and they are.

Material has what’s called a pattern repeat length. It’s usually detailed on the back and simply signifies the measurement when the pattern repeats itself. So when your trying to align it, you know the measurement to use. Maybe the wallpaper has one too. Even though the lines look the same all he way down, this may not be the case. Not sure if I explained this well, but I found it hard to put into words

Add an extra smaller wardrobe. If it won't make the walk way between the bed and the ensuite too awkward. Also i would reopen the door. Although the feng shui is a whole other issue in your room, the way your face lit up when talking about honouring the original architecture I think that you can't not do it. I would also definitely make that unusable wardrobe built ins. I'm sure you would use the storage. And it would balance having cabinetry/ wardrobes on the other side of the room.
