I don't think Ian McLaglan ever received the recognition he deserved. Those keyboards are so tight and really rounded out their sound.

Ronnie Lane was one of the most under-appreciated figures in the Rock World. He gets a shout out from me. "Rest well, sir!"
Absolutely! The band has a loose-sloppy feel (not a complaint), and his bass playing is the glue. It is really the musical base of the band - the guitar is scratchy, the lead vocal scratchy, the background vocals scratchy, the bass is clear and carries the harmony to the vocal line. It is like he plays slightly behind the beat, which gives the whole band a rollicking bar-band feel.

I saw them in Chicago in 1971 at the release of Rod's Every Picture Tells a Story. They did Maggie May before it was released; the audience went insane over it. The whole concert was beyond incredible. It still rings through my mind. I'm grateful to have been a part of it.

Saw them in 1969-70 at Pirates World in Dania, Florida. Really went to see Savoy Brown, but Faces went on first and no one wanted them to get off stage for Savoy Brown so they partied and played for 2 hours great show always remember.

My granny is 84 this year. She always said Rod Stewart has the best voice. She said she has never thought of him as good looking. ( yea right lol ) She just adores his voice. She loves this man. She loves whatever he does. He makes her shine. She sings along. Its beautiful,man. I personally cherish his stuff with the Faces. Just .. mmm.. wowza! The entire band was far-out! But he was a good looker in those days I gotta say . My Granny's favorite indeed. Bless.

Saw The Faces at their last US show ever, November 1, 1975 in Minneapolis...I also believe that was the last concert that they ever played as a group....Yes, I know that Tetsu had replace Ronnie for the last tour, so it wasn't technically The Faces. They knew it was their last concert, (they hinted at it several times) and tore the house down! I still count it as one of the greatest concerts that I've ever seen. At the end, Rod Stewart broke the mike stand over his knee and said "it's over". What I remember the most is the energy they all put into the concert...There was a lot of press about Rod taking over the band, but you couldn't see any animosity on stage. Just pure joy of a band who put everything into their last concert together.
The funny thing is I didn't want to go to the concert. It was advertised as "Rod Stewart and Faces"...I knew of Rod Stewart but had never heard of Faces. A friend talked me into going with him. To this day we talk about that concert. An incredible band and experience.

The Faces always looked like they were having a great time on stage esp Rod and Ronnie, would have loved to see them live . Great band.
I am forever grateful to my H.S. girlfriend who turned me on to Faces back in the day. Forty six years later any Faces tune will light up my day and I think of her. Thanks Pam, where ever you are. Great f'in music.

I saw this band twice in 72, at the lincoln festival and Reading, and for me ,for a couple of years they were the best live band in the world

I saw them with Humble Pie. They were incredible. Rods finest hour, what a incredible showman. Between them and the Pie, I don't think many or were still the whole show. I would have loved to seen Rod & Ronnie when they played for Beck.

God I loved The Faces. How good is Kenny Jones' drum sound? And Ronnie Lane's bass sounds the way a bass should sound. Saw them in Melbourne, Australia, in '74 (minus Ronnie Lane, RIP, unfortunately) and they were brilliant.

I know this is old, but I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl also. I remember the bar. I also remember Rod kicking soccer balls into the audience. I was front row because a friend of mine was in charge of the security and we could take any seats we wanted if they were empty. They called themselves "Peace Power". All bikers.

I've always felt that The Faces were the best showcase of Rod, Ron, Kenny, Ian and Ronnie. I've enjoyed them in other bands but not as much as when they performed as The Faces. This is one of the most underrated and under appreciated bands in rock n roll history. Their live shows were always highly entertaining, soulful and featured great individual performances, as well as collectively as a band. This is how rock n roll was meant to be.

I could not believe how much he spoke about how many drug they did. What tore this band apart was Rod Stewart. Ronnie Lane R.I.P never got to sing the songs he wrote and felt stiffed and was very unhappy. Rod recorded the best songs on his own albums. The rest is history.
kat Mats I agree with what you say about Ronnie Lane, I think they could have functioned perfectly as a four-piece with Plonk on lead vocals. It may have meant a reduction in showmanship without a standalone vocalist, but I don't think the music would have suffered.
Bobby G It would have been interesting if they would have stuck together and saw what came out of it. The Stones were eyeballing Wood at the time. Affectionately as you said Ronnie was called Plonk from The Small Faces days. Poor Ronnie and Steve Marriott with all the unpaid royalties lives would have been a better one . Seems Mac and Kenny did alright. To this day they are still going after what is owed somewhere around L10 Million and L15 Million. As far as Rod~~~~ I own Gasoline Alley and that is it. Never been a big fan of him once he left Faces.
I have read although that he helped out Plonk with his medical bills along with Pete Townsend. Pete helped a great many brothers in a pinch. An unsaid hero. Good to have a conversation with ya.

Ronnie Wood is great when he isn't in the mix with Keef R. Of course, The Stones ARE Keef and Ronnie, but its really nice to hear his tone and talent properly. and Ronnie Lane is the most underrated fella ever. Poor sod was broke most of his life. Then very ill. God rest his soul.
Yes, very sad. I am so glad that there are better treatments for MS these days. My sister has that and she's thankfully doing rather well. Not as mobile as she used to be, but hanging in there. I'm a child of the 70s and miss groups like this, Humble Pie, etc.

a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, Rod Stewart was badass. The Faces gave the Stones a kickin' at their own game with this one. And that's the reason why Ron Wood got dragged for the Rolling Stones. Self-explained.

I grew up with 80's rod stewart.had no idea he rocked like this til I was waaaay older.i am soooo glad I got a heads up from a buddy who said "man,rod used to rock hard back in the day!".to me tho,ronnie lane is the absolute highlight of the faces.one of the best bassists of all time in my book and a helluva songwriter,too!

Hands down: TOP notch. No weak links in this group of five. Very accomplished, inspirational, as well as innovative. What is really cool about all five of these guys is that they actually have character, a great personality and great stage presence to go with it. As many times as I have viewed this footage, I cannot help but to think Ronnie Lane (bassist) had a "touch" of both Paul McCartney and Chris Squire ("Yes" music group) in his talented musical bass playing. R.I.P. Ronnie, a job well done. Flat out . . . this group is "legacy" people, whether you realize it or not. They were THAT good.

I saw them... a long time ago... can’t remember which album but Rod was rocking a pink satin suit, they were definitely feeling very jolly, and were brilliant... a couple of songs ended differently than when they started, but the crowd ate it up. Certainly a one of a kind band...
I'm not a musician but it sounds to me like everything is turned up so loud its creating a fuzzy sound like his amp speakers may burst at any moment (in a good way).
@@neilwhitaker6284 combination of amps, the pre amp gain just overdriving a bit, and his picking technique, and Ronnie used a pick which really gave a lot of attack to the sound, most bass players used their fingers which gave a softer fuller sound ... Personally I think he had one of the greatest bass sounds ever, that swampy, falling down the stairs kind fo thing, fitted the Faces perfectly

robert glenn the younger generation thinks that our generation were made up of cavemen and cavewomen. They don't understand that we accomplished plenty without a computer, but we had to use snail mail and actually meet face to face. The world couldn't be global and that's an advantage of today, but the world was more local community oriented and people were connected in real face to face interaction, and that's today's loss because the more we connect on line, the less we connect in person it seems.

Today, virtually all of my interpersonal connections are online, this due in part to retirement, dealing with post-polio and lack of resources to travel as I would otherwise wish. Even my two brothers, whenever contacting me, do so online. And one lives less than two miles. When my mother was in the late stages of passing, I was informed so online and same with her death, it came via email, a phone call coming only later. However, I've made some wonderful friends across the US as well as England, Spain, Sweden and Brazil, something that would have been impossible when I was living my state of the art old school days. It's rather sad that I haven't a clue who my neighbor is but have daily chats with a buddy in Spain! The kid upstairs devotes nearly 15 hours per day online. He leaves only to run necessary errands. What a shame. He is all of 24 and should be out and about discovering his world.

+robert glenn OK, certainly agreed, but look what a weath of fantastic music and movies is hidden in online chambers, only to be discovered by those with a curious mind... I know some 20 and 30 year old who "discovered" Led Zep this way. Unfortunately, they generally stop digging once they know a few big names, and can establish themselves as the one eyed king in the midst of their deaf dumb and blind colleagues of the same age. The internet allowed me to do from where I live (Antwerp Belgium) research in complete collections of 1950's music magazines on singer Sunny Gale etc. So, the cyber age certainly has a lot of cons, especially for those who knew the period before the TRS 80 & co., but it certainly also has a lot of advantages. People from different parts of the world communicating about their favorite music (even if you have to sift through a lot of mud) or disagreeing about it, sending each other links etc. But I agree, traveling each day in the commuter train from Antwerp to Brussels, it is really freaky: everyone bend over a blue screen or having headphones on etc. I'm not sure if it was very different in the 1970's: many commuters then were hiding behind their newspaper... It's rather a cultural thing: Flemish people (northern part of Belgium) is less talkative than the Walloons, who are living in the South. Much friendlier, more polite, even children, but of course let's not generalize. But having to hear about your mother's passing away through the computer... Frankly, that's "not done", that's in a chilling way rude and impolite... But that's the new mentality.... Look at some people dining together... with the mobile phone within reach.... And they're certainly not all doctors :)
Benoit Vanhees Excellent post. A wonderful read it is. You mentioned how technology separates humans from one another in any given age. I just now recall the myriad images I have of New York commuters riding the train into Manhattan, each of them shrouded from one another behind the New York Times, not one distinguishable face as all are hidden behind the headlines. Today, it's the same thing only high tech. The worst thing that ever happened to my family was the day dad brought home a TV stand with rollers. That night, he rolled it from the living room into the kitchen and dinner time was never the same.
Their cover of "(I Know) I'm Losing You" is particularly outstanding. Kenney Jones' groove throughout the song and drum solo prove that he is a wicked underrated drummer.
I absolutely Adored the Small Faces - when Steve Marriott left I was devastated! When Rod Stewart came along to join the best rhythm section of the times, Ronnie, Kenny, and Mac he must have thought all his Christmasses came at once! I saw Rod and the Faces with Ron Wood live twice in 1972/73. Once at the Hollywood Bowl, then again at the Caird Hall, Dundee. Ronnie Lane was the beautiful soul who was the basis of both amazing bands.

Dragon13Loco Yes, this is the best of the best re Rod Stewart; I have a theory that he was advised to tone down his highly expressive side in the 80's but the truth is his absolute best performing came when he felt totally free to express in his way, which included a bit of connection to the softer, feminine side; I"m saying this was really, really good, and I would have loved to see where The Faces, with Rod Stewart, could have evolved to had they stayed together! I think Rod Stewart looks more happy in these performances than in some others even though they were still stellar. The best advice I would have given him, if I were his manager, would have been; don't reign in that expressive side because people are drawn in by that kind of authenticity. Know who you are, be who you are and don't change that if someone thinks it's wrong, because often time tells that you were right and they were wrong.
One of the ALL TIME BEST BANDS to ever play together ,write their own music & preform live EVER!!!!!! saw them live in Detroit every gig they did here, and there fairwell concert in 75' was unreal!!!

The Faces might have "out-Stoned" The Stones if they'd lasted. they were cockier, better looking, had a tougher, tighter louder sound, wrote great songs, looked, sounded and played so incredibly British. It's tragic they didn't go on.
agreed on every point.. Ron Wood was great as part of the Faces. With the Stones he faded away, or could not assert himself. Rod Stewart was never better than with this band. Listen to 'the unlistenable teen pop "Young hearts beat free tonight'. then compare that to Maybe I'm Amazed'... its not even in the same universe.
Well, they never had a proper drummer and the songs weregreat but not the equal ofthe stones, also they got invoved with Sharon Osbournes dad, a terrible criminal and conman
@@jamesblonde2271 Actually it was The Small Faces who were with Don Arden. They parted ways with that thug when Marriott quit, before becoming The Faces, about the time Peter Grant quit Arden's agency and took the Yardbirds with him. Also, Kenny Jones was the drummer through it all and is still is a great drummer.
@@deanallen927 Kenny Jones is a bloody awful drummer, just ask Daltry and I'm very close with Jez Jones and even he wouldn't describe his dad as "great" accurate,yes, metronomic, perhaps but not inspired, not a swinger and not original. Boo, who you can see in the ichycoo park promo film, a band "friend" lives in Kentish town and to this day describes Kennys drumming as " he was a handsome boy".

Great to see the amazing Ronnie Lane - a real drummers bass player.
Bass player Ronnie Lane left the band the following year after this because he was getting fed up with not getting enough lead vocals for himself as well as the growing dominance Rod Stewart had in the band. He started the band, Slim Chance. Later in 1977 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis while recording an album with Pete Townsend called "Rough Mix". He eventually moved to Texas, USA in 1984, where he continued playing, writing, and recording. He died in 1997.

Five British guys, in the early seventies just slayin' the blues with 100% authenticity and soul. The magnificence of Faces is not know by many folks who who are fans of the other bands of that era (Stones, Dead, Who, Hendrix, Cream, etc..) and that's a shame. You just have to dig down a little deeper to find what is in my opinion, another gold standard of music in the yrs of 70-75. My only regret is that they didn't stay together for a bit longer. They all lived long lives by R&R standards and it would have been great to have them for at least a full decade. Thankfully, the Robinson Bros. and the Black Crowes found these boys and developed a talent and sound befitting of a real rock, blues & soul band. RIP Ronnie & Ian

I was 9 years old in 1972. I started learning the Bass way back then. I'm about to turn 57 and I miss Ronnie something awful. We need to teach today's generation this type of old school rock or it will be lost to time..

I saw Faces first time in Feb of '71. All Brit show; Grease Band, Faces, Savoy Brown. Faces played for HOURS; so it seemed. Ended up standing on chairs, wailing along to "Feels So Good". The 2nd time was on Mac's birthday, in '73, the infamous night Ronnie Lane announced he was quitting Faces. We all sang Happy Birthday to Mac and then a huge cake was wheeled onstage which caused a cake fight. Roadies with towels desperately mopping up so as to avoid a slip and fall. Great parties both nights. Both in Roanoke, VA.
I saw the same line up when they came to Portland Oregon. My first concert ever! I think it was a pretty good one to start with ! :) Back when you had festival seating and you went to The Coliseum as soon as school let out so you could be one of the first ones through the door and get right up front, days to never be forgotten!

"Maybe I'm Amazed" is a Paul McCartney song. It was on his first solo LP. (1970) I believe it was re released in the mid 70's as a single.
