I respect Dan's decision to adhere to the preferences of a cartoon cat, regarding when he should upload his video.
Dude knows his Garfield lore
I mean it’s a good joke but it works because he uploads Charts on Mondays. I’d be had uploaded on Monday he still could have made a joke about it,
I don't think the world was burning with anticipation for this movie either. in fact it's been out for a while where I live and the interest of audiences is a sound 'meh'.
His integrity is no joke, as we all know 😌
Im shocked Awkwafina is not voicing a character in this movie
I was a little shocked when her name didn't appear in the voicecast. Doesn't Sony know the rules?
perhaps a wisecracking bird of some kind
Thank God.
She'll do two voices in the next one
Her commitment to voiceover is astounding
There should be a tally on Awkwafina vs Chris Pratt voice roles. I feel like they are head to head by now. Because....why does every animation need both of them?
Awkwafina is like only 10, Pratt is probably half of that
Fun Fact: This is the second time in Garfield media where we get to see his parents.
The first time was with “Garfield On The Town” where we get to see him reunite with his mother.
That was all the way back in the 80s! Nice memory!
I bet making Garfield as a slice of life comedic drama in the vein of a Studio Ghibli movie like My Neighbor Totoro or Ponyo could have been great while still adhering to the spirit of the comic strips.
But I think they made that with TV cartoon. For the movie, it “must” be “epic”.
0:39 The Emperors New Groove came out when I was 10, it was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, still, my favorite Disney movie to this day
The whole “main character meets long lost father” plot looks so painfully cliche
The one giant eye design makes me so uncomfortable.
It was very uncomfortable in theatres , a lot of the times the characters looked crosseyed
"Ya Know, Because he's a cat" had me rolling.
I'm a HUGE Garfield fan. Unfortunately it jumped the shark into the 2000's. I think the magic and the humor of Garfield comes from its core characters: Garfield (of course), Jon, his dorky owner who can't get a date, and Odie the stupid dog. He doesn't have to venture outside his home. But that's just me.
It's so weird that grown ups would refer themselves as a "fan' of anything. No offense.
Are adults not allowed to really like things?
@rodneycooperjr3223 it's so weird that stupid kids are just so ignorant
@@rodneycooperjr3223 so, you're not allowed to like things? I think it's weird that you think fans are weird. Some people can take it far IMO, but most adult people that I know that claim to be fans of things just "like" those things, but aren't obligated to love everything about them. What's the problem even if people really do love something anyway?
@@rodneycooperjr3223 so weird to hear anyone refer to adults as grown ups - And trust me if you ever feel the need to say no offence - it’s exactly in the same ballpark as “I’m not racist but” - you are going to cause offence but you want to absolve yourself of the consequences of your actions and words .
Garfield was a show with unbelievable dry humor and strangely deep insights into life and ennui. They should have left it alone.
Yep. Dan giving this film WAAYYY too much credit, apparently not realizing or caring what made Garfield Garfield in the first place. I guess his point is that if you didn't grow up with Garfield the comic strip or the cartoon, you shouldn't care what the studio has turned him into?? The real Garfield wouldn't be caught dead in some hijinks adventure caper like this. And Chris Pratt needs to stop. He's not that good.
Why have I not subscribed to this channel? Subbed!
The insinuation that there is such a thing as a "Garfield purist" is about as believable as a straight-faced review of a movie about Garfield.
Niiiice intro! 😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
ETA: Love the Honest Trailers shout out! I miss the old gang...
Yes, im hoping we get another podcast with Dan Joe and Spencer soon. Its a shame we dont get honest trailer commentaris anymore
Yep
At least this movie will make me fall in love with “I’m Sorry Jon” all over again.
Fun Fact : In the previous Garfield movie, Bill Murray who voiced Garfield took the role because he thought the script was written by Joel Coen of the Coen Brothers when it turned out, he misread the last name as the script for his movie was written by Joel Cohen, a completely different person which shocked Murray after he signed on 😂😂
A Garfield movie by the coens would’ve been wild
@@noahmagana137 Any material that is made for kids written by The Coen Brothers would be wild tbh. Hell, a SpongeBob movie written by The Coen Brothers would've been awesome lol
@@15Candles"ya know, for kids"
Seriously tho, if i was gonna point to a Coen brothers film that is most appropriate for kids, it would be raising arizona, not hudsucker proxy.
It's-a me! Garfield! Waa-ha!
I do love Garfield nostalgically and watch the Garfield Christmas cartoon every holiday season. I'll probably catch this one on streaming or maybe the theater if I find a free time for it.
Dan’s rating: Two-and-a-half out of five plates of lasagna.
I can't believe Chris Pratt actually said he doesn't care for lasagna.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody in Hollywood hires Chris Pratt to voice Scooby Doo or The Cat In The Hat 😂😂
Scooby no, but cat in the hat.... Maybe lol
They've already got Bill Hader to voice in the 2026 Cat in the Hat film like his SNL skit.
Great review Dan, I appreciate the work you put into every review - even Garfield.
This makes me want to see what a high budget Garfield movie that much less animated would be like, since he isn't a very active character anyway.
This is the exact entertainment I needed for the a lazy Sunday
The edit at 2:45 made me laugh. Love your work, Dan.
Epic deep Garfield joke at the opening. Chefs kiss
And hinted at with the thumbnail.
Loved the shoutout to Spencer! 🥲
Great video Dan!
Should have released this on a Monday.
Very good review Dan.
Wow nice job Chris. Really inspired work there...
So not only do you have a Ted Lasso reunion, you also have a Pulp Fiction one as well
the top gun moment made me smile
That intro was god tier level :)
Living for the Spencer shoutout lol! I wasn’t going to see this movie but these reviews are always a must see!
Dans opening Dad(n) jokes never fail to crack a smile on my face
My five year old is excited for this movie because of the 2007 show… gosh I hope he isn’t disappointed!
I saw it last Sunday too.
Is the Furiosa-Garfield opening weekend this year’s Barbenheimer?? GaRiosa?
Looks fun family film.
It not Snoop Dogg it’s Snoop Lion 😂
Maybe it's just me, but I'm still baffled at how Garfield, as a franchise, has managed to cling on this long.
It’s the suction cups he has for sticking to car windows
@@DanMurrellMovies Nice one. Also, Hi Dan! lol Miss your epic movie fights.
I applaud the first Monday home 👏🏼
I grew up reading Garfield, and buying the collections at Scholastic Book fairs. I guess my kids would be the target market, except they are in college. Guess I'll skip this one, and go back to reading Garfield minus Garfield.
I grew up on GARFIELD. Read the comics and watched the cartoon. I was cautiously optimistic about this movie, but it sounds like it's not for me. I may see it eventually anyway, but it doesn't sound like I need to make much of an effort to bother this weekend. Thanks for the review, Dan!
I had no idea there was a Garfield movie actually coming out.
Hey Dan did you see that HBO is doing a movie pass doc?
It's kinda impressive that 6 of the 8 mins in this video are just of Dan telling you in different ways that it is kids movie only kids will like but not adults.
Good review. I’m one of those “Garfield purist”. Not really , but I’ve known the character since the comic strip was good and the animated specials were charming. I know most of what they do with the character nowadays, including the strip in its last years, is usually dull and uninspired, but I had some hopes in this movie. It could have worked too. I understand why they’d think the strip is too simple for a movie plot or that kids nowadays prefer a faster pacing. What I don’t get why they felt the need to rush all the parts that were more intrinsically Garfield. I mean, fast paced montage about his misadventures in Mondays? Ok, it’s a new, more dynamic way to show these gags. But If you are not going to use any of those Garfield antics during the rest of the movie you may as well expand some of those gags a little bit. If you want to create new secondary characters well, it’s ok, but they are just decent, not better than most secondary characters from the script. For mature Garfield fans giving Liz, Nermal, Pookie or even Jon so little to do seems weird but I’d argue it is also weird for children who don’t know the characters. Why did they make a great deal about Jon in the first act and then not having him doing anything substantial? At the very least, even if he didn’t appear much in the second act he could have helped more in the third. The animation in the movie is great and it does try to match some of fhe peculiarities of the strip and the slapstick humor, which is probably more Looney Tunes than Garfield is very well done. So yeah it’s ok for kids, but Mark Dindal I think is a good director (Chicken Little was bad but Emperors New Groove and Cats Don’t Dance were very good) and I think he could have done something better or at least funnier with a better script.
No Awkwafina??
Hollywood today: "Lets make an original character!" "NO but we can just make whatever we want and put it in skin people will recognize"
I've had a better time chasing my tail then watching Garfield
Cute Monday joke. 😉
Wow, had no idea there was even a new Garfield movie coming out.
Don’t you watch Dan’s weekly box office videos? It’s been playing outside US for a few weeks already.
When I watched the movie I was thinking Sony tried to do a Pixar movie with Garfield in it. Now I know why. Thank you, Dan! ☺️
The movie itself is not bad. But it is like "The Fall Guy" movie. Colt Seavers in the movie is not Colt Seavers. And Garfield in this movie is not Garfield.
Can we please stop casting non-voice actors for animated movies? I get there are exceptions like Jack Black or Mark Hamill, but most animated characters can carry themselves independently without the need for celebrities to bloat the budget.
And I feel like most people don't care anymore if there is a celebrity voicing a character.
@@jessrl8025 That's true. I still wonder why studios think that a celebrity who doesn't show their face would be a draw for any animated movie.
Jack black isn't an exception. He just has a character, Poh, who kept getting sequels. He's not cast in other movies I think.
Anyway what you're saying about budget is true. But for this movie it's already doing very well and are already about to make profit.
@@jessrl8025ok there's feeling.. but where's the actual evidence that names in animation have no effect. Chris prat himself has 2 very successful animated movies and Garfield is doing quite well
@@piusdoe8984 I have no doubt that this will do well at the box office.
I can’t wait for this movie to sweep the Oscars.
Bill Murray is the hero we need for this movie. Ghostbusters 4: Frozen Empire already made $200 million.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Chris Pratt loves lasagna.
I was expecting the intro to say you watched the movie on Sunday... in 2004
chris pratt looks like phil spencer in that pic lol
I’m curious, but I’ll wait for Netflix.
Me too, it looks like fun though.
My only complaint about this video is...
Just kidding. No complaints.
Love ya, Dan.
but wait: is Akwafina in it? it's an animation movie?!
Just saw it. I dug it.
Sold out for advanced tickets.
Intro joke working
My daughter loved it
I HATE when studios use celebrities for voice acting. Now when I listen to Garfield talk all I’m going to be able to hear is frickin Chris Pratt! He’s fine, but give some other, more struggling actors a shot! Someone whose voice I DON’T know! It takes me out of the movie, when all I can think about is something this person posted on Twitter yesterday. Give some random guy off the street a shot at becoming the voice of Garfield!
This should've been a hand drawn animated movie, inspired by the 80s cartoon, with no celebrity voice actors, just talented voice actors
I will never understand the rationale for having celebrities doing the voices. Who is the person that says , "Wow , celebrity X is doing the voice, i have to see this now!"
A lot of it is about promotion. Chris Pratt is big on social media and is a draw for late night shows, internet videos that could go viral, interviews with big magazines, etc. It’s as much about driving awareness as selling tickets.
I saw the trailer for Garfield before The Phantom Menace and I just remembering thinking how generic and non-specific everything seemed. Like the main character would be swappable to any furry animated mascot. At least, going by Dan's review, the trailer is selling the movie accurately.
I’m gonna go see the movie tomorrow. If it’s bad, then I’ll still have Garfield and Friends. And the Garfield Show
I feel like giving this the title of “something you put on to keep your kids quiet for an hour and a half” is selling the movie kinda short. While obviously not as engaging as other movies, it’s harmless enough to where most parents wouldn’t have to groan whenever their kid wanted them to watch it with them.
The original Garfield strip was never really designed for children - although the writer Jon Davis did then do a number of strips/collections aimed more at children. Garfield is basically sarcastic, manipulative, cynical, lazy quick thinking and greedy but he can also be hyperactive - particularly in the pursuit of food or when he's had too much coffee - so l never imagined him to be laid back rather quip-smart and snarky - and because he liked lasagne somehow I imagined him having an Italian-American accent. Bill Murray's voice was too slow for the character and Chris Pratt is just - well - Chris Pratt. I didn't like the previous films and l'm pretty sure l wouldn't like this one but then l'm not the target audience. Appreciate the review as always!
So many celebrities. I get wanting the name attention but the trend of voice work not going to voice actors has been a staple for so long. Just kinda sad to think about.
Granted the audience does not care. Many of the biggest and loved animations just hired celebrity voices and they always do just fine. From shrek to how to train your dragon to spiderverse etc but i still think its a bit sad.
I loved Garfield growing up and his voice from the series (Garfield and Friends) is his voice. All others are wrong. His voice needs to sound lazy because he is Garfield.
Commenting for engagement
Bill Murray as Garfield was perfect casting. Just needed to be in better films. Not sure why Chris Pratt is in every movie ever and what unique things he offers (seems like a nice guy tho).
Spencer J Gilbert, Shout out!
I mistakenly heard Dan say "...great writers for Amish trailers" 😅
I don’t know, I feel Snoop Dogg voicing Garfield might be more interesting… he has that lay back attitude in real life that might work for Garfield… 😂😂😂
I’m a fan of og Garfield. It’s a shame that they didn’t take inspiration from the og specials. Good I passed on this one. It looks like it will be a flop.
Wait til you guys hear that Marvin Gaye song
Shrek movies had cast full of lovie stars and yet they were all amazing. Movie star /= lackluster performance. This is a modern quality control problem//laziness
Now I’m craving lasagna.
Wait.....did we get an animated film that doesn't have Awkwafina doing a voice?
This was pretty funny on the positive, but not the greatest plot.
My take is lots of what you said. I'm 57. Garfield was at his height of popularity when I was a teenager. A large part of Garfield's appeal is the sardonic, adult sense of humor. Although he reportedly thought the whole experience was beneath him, this is why Bill Murray left a classic imprint of Garfield in his portrayal, especially the first movie. A patently, unambitious ball of fluff is not the treatment Garfield deserves as a character. Garfield is funniest in his home and his neighborhood. He's just a hungry, apathetic, self-absorbed cat, not a super spy. The need to turn him into one is indicative of the lack of understanding of or imagination with the character of Garfield.
I disagree. A heist plot doesn't seem too out there for Garfield. In Garfield and Friends, crazy stuff happens all the time like Jon getting a talking car that falls in love with him.
You gave this a pass over Ghostbusters. Having seen both, I don't get it.
I had fewer issues with this one. And it wasn’t a ringing endorsement. I take each movie on its own terms, and it’s just my opinion
@@DanMurrellMovies Fair, I'm a big GB fan and thought it was about as good as GB 2 which I also like. Im one of those Garfield purists you mentioned lol, so I honestly didnt enjoy the heist, but my kid did.
How many more franchises does Chris Pratt need to punch before he gets a free sandwich?
Garfield was never a go to character for me even in the prime of his popularity. It was just an okay show with dumb repetitive jokes.
orange cats are awesome, lasagna is gross
It's just a weird direction for a movie, because the Garfield comics were never for kids, they're mainly about very adult situations, and most Gen Alpha kids have never even heard of Garfield, so why would you create a movie about a comic strip character that's going to be mostly recognizable to Gen Xers, but make it for a target audience of young children? I mean this isn't like a Super Mario where you have a character that has had a resurgence of popularity among the younger generations, it's a character that hasn't be relevant in pop culture for 20 years.
Gah! The animation style of this movie makes me wish I didn't have eyes!
It looks so cheap, like a low budget kids tv show.
I didn't like this at all. I didn't find it funny, and the kids in the theater weren't laughing. On top of that, the flagrant product placement for Sony, Olive Garden, and (the final straw) Walmart really upset me.
I love Chris Pratt, but they really need to stop giving him voice work he has one voice his own.
Animation is for all ages
And I’m very excited to see this and people are being harsh on this movie
For me It was a 4/10 Movie
This was the most not a fan it's fine review ever
