Building a Hunting Cabin 21: Metal Valley and Hip Details
Вставка

- In this episode of building a hunting cabin, I show you our process for metal valleys as well as metal hip details. Actually this video is full of helpful tips and tricks when installing metal trims. Let me know in the comments what you thought about the episode.
with losing my mic audio for about two days, I tried something a little different and personally kind of like it. I was able to just show the process and then voiceover what I was doing to detail the metal valleys and hips.

wondering what you think about this style of video? having no audio recorded forced me to do it a little different. I kind of liked it
RR Buildings I liked it, but I also like it the other way as well. I would say just mix it up with some live audio and some voiceover throughout the entire video when you can.
I liked it most definitely you can explain more and into more detail
I like the in depth detail you can go into with this style, but I also like the banter you have back and forth with your crew
Awesome
I personally enjoyed the video format you did. The information you talked about was a lot easier to understand.
I do have a question. I always thought a metal roof would last 50 years or more. Why would they only make the nuts or screws last 35 years. I probably misunderstood what you were saying but I do you remember saying 35 years?
For me, the ideas in ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxAfqpMLyFn37qcqUl0FAzqkkycQeXqrhP Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.
THIS IS WHAT I CALL TAKING PRIDE IN YOUR WORK, TRULY AMAZING WORK. THANK YOU FOR SHAREING.....
SECONDED!
Thirded !! Lol
Great attention to detail.Brilliant.
Hey mate, im a roofer here in Australia, and everything in this video is what were taught not to do. No i understand that there's completely different climates between us and that we have to follow the manufactures installation procedure so we dont void the warranty, i just simply cant understand why they'd have you screw into the pan. Thats where the water runs, water corrodes things in time and that washer would cease to exist, furthermore, there's no screw stopping water or snow from entering from under the lap, where here jn Australia, we use longer screws and only screw into the rib, to seat the lap preventing any water penetration and less chance of water causing corrosion to the washer, equalling a longer life span.
If you'd like to know more about a different way to install steel sheeting, please email me on collingwood-2@outlook.com .
I will gladly send you a PDF file containing all correct installation procedure supplied by the manufacturer of the steel, following the revised standard known as the AS 1562.1:2018 Design and Installation of Sheet Roof and Wall Cladding.
Compliance with the new standard is mandatory for all new building projects. It's part of a constant drive to improve the durability and weather tightness of homes in Australia.
Do you see the higher ridges in the body of the panel. It's not flat like most standing seam metal roofs. That roof is closer to a corrugated metal because of the taller ridges in the body of the panel. You really cannot use a cleat with that because it looks like crap and will not hold worth a shit. They used a thicker sealing strip under the screws just like you do with cleats, butyl tape and screws.
The building industry needs more contractors like yourself! Attention to detail, and pride in work. Awesome job man! Keep it up.
Perfect, absolutely spot on! I think the system you have for the ridge cap is more than adequate, unfortunately there’s not a lot of other options.
If you where in my area I’d love to help you build my shop in a heartbeat. These days it’s hard to find someone that’s willing to do it right and be proud of what their end result is. I always build to the best of my knowledge and abilities and it’s nice to see that I’m not the only one with that mindset. Keep up the PROUD work.
“It’s all in the hips...it’s all in the hips”... but seriously, looks great!
agree
The only complaint I have about no mic is I can’t hear Greg drop bars! Seriously good videos however you put them out.
Great work, and it's even greater that you take pride in your craftsmanship. The world needs more of this in every field.
“Not everyone can wear $160 nikes”
*wearing $172 cougar paws
Very impressive. I'm not sure how this building could have been built any better. Wow
Try to drill a hole in the hem before putting a fastner in it will lessen the oil can look. Sorry about my english.
What...? Your ribs don't line up on the valleys? That's it, unsubscribed...... LOL
You are right Kyle I bet you are the only one who would ever notice, most people would most likely not even know they are supposed to line up.
Too bad about the mic malfunction, that sucks, but I will say while I miss the banter and Greg's singing (did I just say that out loud...?) in the voice over you do get a chance to explain things in more depth.
That is an amazing hunting lodge, I'm sure that generations of that family will enjoy it.
Cheers from Tokyo!
I love your videos always very informative
PS: I look at you from France 😁😁👍👍
Congrats on 300K Subs. Awesome Man!
ya no one will see the ribs don't line up unless they look out the WINDOW right above ...lets hope the home owners are American and are clue-less .. it's ok the ribs on the other side don't match ether
I think z stripping the hips would be a waste of time. You don't do it on the cap.The sealer tape works decent I think. If you font like the dimples do you think pre-drilling would help??
the "wind wribin wain " gets me everytime lmao
Nice video. We would never screw into the pan of a sheet in Aussie, only on top of the rib. Bugger all chance of leaks from the rib of a sheet.
Like this build really cool learn few new things every time
Kyle these narrated vids are like the discovery channel!
So awesome.
so you like them better??
@@RRBuildings Personally, I like the interaction between you and Greg.
@@RRBuildings In some areas, they are better vs. listening to on the job narration. It's possible that once the scene is recorded, you have a better viewpoint to describe the subject matter in greater detail and focus. The real time narration focus's one way while an edited narration can focus with much more detail because you are actually seeing the results from the cameras and can drill down on those details.
Good work Kyle......Two observations if we're going to straight plywood we never used the smaller quarter inch screws we find them to loosen up in 7 to 10 years they make a 5/16 made for plywood seems to last longer also we batten almost everything that way the building stays much cooler with the metal off of the deck heat... not radiating down great work thanks for the tips.
The hip looks just fine Kyle stop beating yourself up man!!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I wish there were more contractors like you. Great job
Nice video
I am stunned by your attention to detail and your craftsmanship ...

The voice over after is fine but always good to hear it live. The exposed fastners is more of an industrial look and I quite like seeing neatly layed out faseners. Like nice big rivted steel door on an old steam engine. Keep it manly.
Congratulations on 300K subscribers.
thank you
I do alot of 20 gauge roofing it doesn't tin can. Maybe you could order hips in thicker material.
Nice building by the way. Love the covered areas great for working outdoors and keeping building cool and dry.
💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤙🏻👍🏻👍🏻🔨🔨😎
Have you ever had any issues with those exposed fasteners?
At minute 11:36 of this video, you took us a step back to see how a project can provoke artistry & technical beauty. I swear the Hunting Cabin's symmetry, line proportion, and evenness gave my OCD/Attention Deficit a short circuit into a calm, relaxing serenity that only a few things can provide for me. A few seconds later you said the same thing.
Just a question I noticed on another of your vdeos that you framed out the existing roof Is that necessary or can you go right on top of the exsisting shingles I live in Florida want to make roof as secure as possible. Is it better to cut the angles with snips or saw?
I would always recommend removing shingles
Вчера купил себе точилку Irwin...
I bet you are the fastest present wrapper in your state.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Great Work bro....... I like ✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌
Outstanding work Kyle, and the voiceover is just fine.
Great video. I’m an equipment operator and concrete guy. You gonna do the pour footage before the doors? I know it’s not your crew but just showing the work as a b roll type look?
This man is an artist! I'm a perfectionist and I love watching quality work!
For the hip caps ever tried pop rivets.. another great video keep em coming.
I would still need a clip system underneath but yes I have
Good contents mate, subscribed.
You talk about your trim oilcanning but you stated that you are using 29g trim... Why not try a regular ridge cap on your hips or use all 26g trim to drastically reduce the risk? On the other hand your detail work is amazing!
What's the difference between using a grinder and using a nibbled? Don't they both creat a bare edge that can rust out
The nibbler anneals the steel... almost self heals it so it will last longer
Awesome!! I do all my roofs with 24 gauge steel! Especially the flashings!! It helps with denting/oil canning and is crisper to bend!!
Standing seam corners on those wall flashings, and wrap the corners and 45 the drip kick on that drip edge! Love your videos! It’s great to see someone else using offset snips!! 😆
I doubt this is 24 gauge steel. Most of the stuff he has built, I believe, is 29 gauge.
Great. Is my job bro. Nice
To bad it's a crappy system....I guess you do the best with what you got
Hey Arthur I’m researching about these roofs and was wondering what do you mean by crappy system? Thanks man.
That is one HUGE hunting cabin. Looks great
They will hunt indoor, that's why it's so big. There is also a safaripark in it you can drive thru it in ur car. Amazing.
Kyle the voice overs aren't really a negative. Maybe there could be a balance of on the job audio and voice over. Especially times you're having to shout from 15 feet away maybe opt to just record ambiance at the site and voice over later. Just a thought!
Nice work guys keep it up ✌️
Amazing work brother. Thanks a million for your priceless advice. Very beautiful clean work...👍...
“Wait, What?” Keep the banter.
I've been a metal roofer/sheet metal/gutter installer for ten years now and I gotta say this roof looks pretty good. And the valley is called a single crown valley not a W valley.. just saying
Thanks
On our barn we just cut the ridge cap 2 inches long and folded the end over to keep rain out.
Lol, I'm such a dumbass. Was watching you talk about that cap sealant tape and was asking myself how you were going to lay that down over the high points to your snapline. Then you just put on the flat bottom of your cap. Been a long day.
Everything looks great man im lerning a lot from you 👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👌👍
Beautiful work bro, that's what I call art😎👍
6 dislikes???? I can't believe it... why? Can I see those 6 people do something( besides leaving negative feedbacks)so I can judge them .. thair life must be hard..
Nice video as always guys.. I just enjoy it everytime...
Most likely those who thinks screws must be placed on ridge.
Second comment in 42 seconds LOL seems i have heard that from a girlfriend before😝
haha
LOL no I'm good see I'm missing both legs from Knees Down yes I am a contractor yes I do steel roofs buildings lean-to Electrical Plumbing Heating Cooling everything and I've had more than one woman call me tripod LOL I only need 30 seconds to get the job done like any good contractor😁
👍👏👏👏🏼
When does electric go in to your buildings? How do you plan for that?
Usually once she’ll is done
I’m need someone work for me
In Beaumont, Texas!!!!!
👍👍👍👍
Rivet the ridge cap
Kyle, I love your videos and your craftsmanship is superb. I'm hooked. If I could ask, what would you recommend underneath an open sided RV carport, to diminish sweating and dripping? Simple moisture underlay fabric, or perhaps OSB with a vapor barrier? Keep up the great work.
Drip stop
@@RRBuildings Thank you Kyle for taking the time to answer my question. Nice product 👍Beautiful truck too!
Excellent
Thats going to be a nice cabin!
Do you work here in FL
Good professional video...I dont care for exposed fasteners on a metal roof when applied on a house...barns and sheds.... yes.
👍👍👍
😁
Kyle- When is the wedding?
You know Greg’s ?
He is gonna marry himself right?
Oh no need to hire a singer Greg can sing for his own wedding to himself?
When you were talking to the camera while on the lift I noticed Greg had one foot on the lift and one on the roof strattling between the two?
How high up are you?
I notice you are getting pretty casual about safety ?
As I sit nursing a foot broke in 6 places after falling from some scaffolding ?
Yea I got pretty casual also?
No fun when someone gets hurt real bad? Not if they do Kyle? It’s when?
Why? Because ?
Do u go over safety every week?
Day?
Never?
You used to ride Greg if he did not wear his carpenter boots?
Unless they are approved construction work shoes then do not show up in them?
They saved my foot?
If I had tennis shoes on I work be in surgery with screws & pins in my foot?
Good equipment & tools! No exceptions in my work are!
Including footwear!
Protect your family/self; & your workers!
Yes, if you are going to enjoy the content then hit that SUBSCRIBE rectangle! Thanks.
... just checking in... have been subscribed for a good while, also bell button notified. IMHO, this is your best build series of them all, so far. always looking forward to next installments. also, if you get the chance with the owner's OK, swing by later on, when the whole build, landscaping, furnishing is done and give us a quick tour of what the hunting lodge finally looks like for posterity. p.s. coming to you from the Heart of the Ozarks just north of the MO/AR state line. :)
Really a thumbs-up and no reply very professional
Thanks
You and the crew should be proud. You all do great work.
Would realy like to see the inside of the building and all when it's fully done, hope that is in the plan :)
So you say the washers last 30-35 yrs - should I be concerned that in my new construction, the builder put silicone caulk over the valley screws? Seems like a shoddy method to me -a bailout for not knowing how to construct a metal roof valley (they have repaired said valleys 4 times -have not been able to stop from leaking...)
Good afternoon from Auckland, New Zealand.
Shout out to New Zealand where's that??
Love it ! Your attention to detail shows in the final product! The narration is awesome !
you a real pro .
I love it 👍👍
great work men
your attention to details is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job guys
Don't let them sell you the narrow walley tin,use a full piece 42 inches valley tin or some call it w flashing, got whole lot less leaks
beautiful...
Chechnya 👍
I was watching the Fabral valley install videoua-cam.com/video/WOoxpZ-JHIQ/v-deo.html and they held back the panels much further from the W with the reasoning it allows more room for debris to be washed or blown out and down. The video is about 8 years old though, has something changed causing you to put the panels so close to the center?
Nope I doubt it... that is how they want to do it? Nothing wrong with that. I don’t like the look
@@RRBuildings gotcha, thanks for all the great content!
Voiceover is cool for explaining things but I do miss hearing your banter while working.
Nice work!
Use screws
Nice job
Hello, please help, I am north California, Sacramento, and I need to know, can I install the underlayment under the metal valley, will that pass inspection. thank you
Kyle, a couple of things. Metal Sales should have a 20' break and can make you r valley and hip caps in 20' lengths, so no end laps. Go with an open hem valley and you can use cleats to attach the valley.
They surely can get me longer pieces... I worry about some of those details oil canning if circumstances aren’t perfect and that detail I want crisp
Either way is fine all your vids are great Kyle what would be awesome is see if you can do like a six month look back after all the final details are done and decorations ,etc.. if the building owners would allow
Passion!
Get the microphone fixed miss listening to the craic and banter
Nice job.
We are our own worst critics,That being said you guys do absolutely fantastic work and there is reason to put down anything I’ve seen here!!!The job all things considered looks amazing!!!!!Great Job!!!!!
