I love that you really make this approachable instead of gatekeeping or making it too hard like it feels like a lot of people tend to do. Really awesome!
Hi, I've never had any confidence with rigging. I've modelled in Maya, sculpted in Zbrush and textured in substance painter with ease. Rigging just scared me, as I just found it complicated to approach it, instead, I have many times got the model auto rigged. I've tried other paid tutorials, but they were either over-explained or very badly explained, honestly, they didn't make sense and it never clicked. With your teaching process, it is fantastic and with every step of the way you're explaining, making it clearly understandable and making sense. High praise and with hats off to you and thank you. People need great teachers like you. -That is all. :)
I don't usually comment but you are a total lifesaver. I've been taking 3d modelling classes and it's been such a struggle. Everything was too confusing and complicated until I stumbled on your channel. I literally binge most of your videos! Thank you for this amazing tutorial.
i love the way you explain, an how you get into detail of good practices without making it boring, as game dev who already work in the industry just trying to learn other fields of the 3d production i love it as that kind of knowledge comes really in handy when doing more complex stuff later on.
Oh my god you’re the nicest tutor out there!! I’ve been able to revisit a lot of technicalities in maya because I couldn’t retain whatever I learnt in one of my classes. A big thanks to you!! Keep these coming!!
I've been putting off learning rigging but now is the time. Your way of teaching is helpful and good to understand. I only wish there was more tutorials by you for rigging
I am going to take 30 day challange of rigging but it seems like i will learn much more in a week thanks to your channel i wish you made tutorials on zbrush because we lack the tutor like you . Thank you so much for everything God bless you much more.we love you
I love your toturial. every time I came here to learn a specific skill. but you also give us an additional tricks and hacks to improve our skills. All respect
This was absolutely fantastic. I am working in VFX for a year now but I never got such a nice and simple Rigging explanation. Hope you will make part 2.
12:43 I’ve done everything you said, parented all the joint using the constraints but the controllers are still acting as if they are separate from the joint and aren’t moving the model at all
I can't tell you how much I love your channel! You are so clear and easy to follow. My lazy teacher is always away and when he is in to teach us he is useless. I'm so glad that I can come to you to learn how to use Maya
You make things extremely easy. It's very easy to understand, digest, and absorb. I did it after my first watch. I wish you posted every feature of Maya on UA-cam. Thank you 😊 💓.
Hey im running into trouble on this one. Just seeing if anyone can help. I make the cylinder and the joints fine, but when i go to bend the joints like at 7:03 the geometry doesnt bend. it just distorts the top of the cylinder? is there a setting i have on that causes that? Or do i need to make the last joint shoot out beyond the top of the cylinder?
Hi Javid, Let's see if we can troubleshoot. One, make sure you select every joint in the outliner and then select the mesh, then bind. If that doesn't work, make sure there is enough geometry for the cylinder to bend, several spans around the cylinder otherwise it cannot bend. I hope that helps!
This is the best tutorial for a beginner like me to start with the rigging. I would also like to know @ 12:00, how to scale the geometry portion using the controller ?
I am sorry I'm new, but why did we have to go to such lengths to hide the rigs and use those circles? I mean the cylinder moved even when we rotated the joints directly. I didn't understand what the advantage of using the circles was.
Wow, Maya has a complex way of doing things that should be so quick and easy. Make joint, make controller, snap this snap that etc. Rigging a full human character would take three times longer than necessary. Good presentation though. I understood what you were explaining but couldn't help but think it's a little more process heavy than it should be
15:30 what if you want to unlock and show them again? I can't seem to find the option, wouldn't want to lock and hide then be stuck that way Nvm you can do it in edit > channel control (in the same window as where the unlocked channels are shown) then find the hidden channels and move them to the left, then unlock
Great tutorial Monica! I love the way you have made the small graphical touches with the "like, leave a comment, subscribe" messages that occur throughout the video. Very creative way of bringing it to attention and so much better than just saying "Remember to like, subscribe and comment" like everyone else ;)
was super intimidated to do a rig for a model I made because I have no former experience, but this one video taught me the theory of it and explained to me why we do certain things, and why not. super clear! thank you for a wonderful video...I feel like I'd be able to apply this a lot of places and set it up well. Also did not know about find and replace (will be using it a lot in the future hahaha)
At 11:35 when I'm trying to parent controllers to the bones, my cylinder gets tilted (what i mean is it changes it's position). Why is that happening? Can someone please help??
Hahaaa, thank you. In a final major project and got the technical job despite…. Knowing everything BUT rigging(yes I can Python/MEL tools) and was never taught it due to the trade of with learning Unreal got me) this at least got my feet under me

Brilliant! I love your tutorial!!
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. When i try to use the controllers to bend the cylinder, it just angles it and the skeleton bends outside the skin.
Do you have enough geometry? notice that the cylinder has a lot of geometry, so that it can bend. Otherwise it will break like a straw. Otherwise, make sure you select the joins and the geometry when you bind. I hope that helps!
