Richard Rodgers' own favorite score of his was for Carousel, but this has always been mine. They all keep coming around again and again because the quality hasn't ever been topped. Love it that every generation gets to experience these shows.
I knew about Brian Stokes Mitchell and even though I knew Reba had been on Broadway, THIS was totally unexpected. What a wonderful adaptation! I have this on dvd.
I think you need to see Mary Martin’s performance. She originated the role of Nelly Forbush. I really don’t think anybody can top her performance in this musical.
I did see Mary Martin, she was phenomenal. But I love Reba, her brilliant portrayal of Nellie Forbush her vocal & everything she’s brought to the character..Can’t help but smile whenever she acts,sings, & interacts with Brian. They’re both perfect
I was thrilled by the first touring stage production at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford UK in the fifties. Then I was disappointed by the movie version with major casting problems. Mitzi a Hollywood showgirl too mature and sophisticated. Brazzi obviously Italian not French, not actually singing. And the superimposed mood lighting, as if this amazing show cannot work its own magic. Now I am charmed by this presentation. The best thing since Broadway. Timeless and very musical. The epic quality of South Pacific is that in the grip of the most vicious war albeit also heroic in paets, human tenderness may be encountered. The animist power of Bali Hai and being sequestered in another hemisphere, another, more tropical world, Introduced to people who were not even aware of the hostilities. Escapism writ large. Not forgetting for a moment that the Japanese also happened to be of a different race. ….All of that. Honey, what a cue for a song! But as a contributor remarked, R and H also subverted the major romance of Nellie and Emile. Instead of singing the song to each other in a plea for love,.. this middle aged Frenchman tells her about the crowded room and so forth. The enchanted evening speaks of magic and sheer chance. You feel her calling you, and you are instantly aware of her importance to you. The crowded room echoes his lines that she was of course pursued by others more eligible, had many choices. He almost condemns her in choosing him. And the bottom line speaks of permanence. Both actually do let go of the relationship, thus defying this theme, but their love is so powerful. Issues of war and racial intolerance are cast aside. The show speaks of the triumph of the individual against an unfeeling world. Congratulations to all involved!
This will probably be taken down, but oh, what an amazing performance .... I normally dislike Reba, but she is perfect for this role, and owned it big time ... Brian Stokes Mitchell is sublime, Danieley was brilliant as well .... We could go down the whole cast and see stupendous performances from nearly every one of them ... One of my favorite PBS specials, who is going to take it down, unfortunately ... They are hard core about their copyrights.

having always loved musicals. i have been playing on my computr Rogers and Hammerstein, it has opened up a whole new world. South Pacific with Reba and Paul and i have fallen in love with their presentation at Carnegie Hall. i get the impression that Reba and Paul, also the entire cast are enjoying themselves. thanks Jennifer Gore
