I don't see how anyone can look at the government, and how it conducts itself, and think "more of that, plz."
"but if we just put the right people in power"...
If the government is giving you money, it’s quite easy to want more of it.
The only thing that would be worse than our representative democratic government is not having a representative democratic government. Believing a corporatocracy, free market, or wealthy ruling class would lead to greater prosperity for the country is not sane. Voting and term limits at least give a mechanism to reign in human greed and corruption. Without it, there would be no reason for the ruling classes to pretend to care about us proles. We would literally devolve into the type of country the founding fathers fled and bled to get away from.
When you don't believe in anything you'll believe almost everything
“If the government is giving you money, then it’s quite easy to want more of it.”
Congratulations, you just described corporate bailouts and the military-industrial complex.
The conservative experience isn’t a lack of adversity or disadvantages, it’s about overcoming them and succeeding despite of them.
Whatever you need to tell yourself.
You just said there isn't a disadvantage so what are you overcoming? Thats an oxymoron.
@@anarchychicken69 He said there isn't a lack of disadvantages...
@@douglemay7989you sad, bitter little person 😂
Also want to refer to another point overcoming adversity is not the same thing as pointless suffering. I've noticed with conservatives the conflict the two things for some kind of martyrdom thinking of something to do with religiosity.
The fact that people think conservatives are not nor have ever been disadvantaged is ridiculous and laughable.
💯
True! I'm a high-functioning autistic conservative older white male. Academia has engineered so much automatic hate into graduates, that the empty spaces left by autism are filled with the hateful presumptions of academic activists. Academia has created an army of activists that are driving people like me from being socially functional to outright disabled. Academia has created a new type of social disability.
Absolutely agree. I don't claim any actual political party 100% because none are without flaws. Although I will admit that most of my values & beliefs agree overall with the conservative perspective. Most of the people I know & have known throughout my life have come from a poverty-stricken life riddled with disadvantage. The majority, probably 95% or more, also have mostly, if not entirely, conservative values.
Conservatives base their understanding of the world on facts and analysis.
Progressives base their "understanding" on narratives and feelings.
Progressives gave us the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and Communist China.
In the US, progressives gave us Segregation, Jim Crow, and the KKK.
In the US conservatives support individual liberty and representative government.
Progressives in the US support control of the people by the bureaucracy and single party government by any means necessary.
I’ve done that “privileged” test, I am less “privileged” than the “disadvantaged”. I am now privileged because I worked for it! I served, I put myself through night school while supporting my family. And I will soon be living a better life. The government will not do it for you, you have to do it yourself!
FYI I am not conservative but libertarian. Not an anarchist but a minimalist when it comes to government. I believe the government should do nothing but keep a military for self defense. That’s it!
I'm a conservative, and I came from abject poverty. I realized early on that if I wanted anything, I needed to be responsible and work for those things. I also didn't have any special "privileges". In my family, we were all expected to work. We worked after school every day, and we worked during the summers.
Liberals do not work. Got it.
I was born in the 60s, I had to work for anything I wanted. I had to mow and trim the lawn, wash dishes, take the garbage out etc. I was given 50 cents a week. my mom would make me a sandwich and a bag of chips for school and I think it was 30 cents for a can of pop and a cinnamon bun. had a paper route several times, worked at the Ohio state Buckeye's stadium selling soda, county fairs, shovel snow for money, what ever we could think of to make money..we lived out in the country making it a little hard to find ways for money. we would even clean barns out for farmers, bail hay, carry and stack firewood. our street had about 10 houses and farmland in every direction. I only had one friend across the street, everyone else was too far away. we were never allowed to go into town and "hangout" our town was about 6 miles away. I miss those days and often think back to the simpler times...today vs that period, feels like two different planets.
Conservative here too. Did not grow up wealthy by any means but we were always taught to be fiscally conservative. Our family did not believe in material things and we always had to work for everything we’ve gotten.. that statement from the black dude is so ignorant and almost a little offensive
Same here. We were poor, especially after the recession in the 90's. Us kids all worked anytime we could. My Aunt had an orchard and we'd all work 8-10 hours a day picking fruit, babysitting the younger kids, or doing general chores. We got $5/day and we'd use that to buy school clothes. I started working at the age of 8. I'm a better person for it too. I never ever expect handouts and frankly, I don't want them. I can work. When I need more cash, I work more. It's called character.
The simple fact is that some cultures are superior to others. Inferior culture holds back some groups. Those groups simply need to recognize that their culture is Inferior, repent and work to fixtheir problems.
As a Catholic Latino with a cultural heritage that is conservative some of these comments are bizarre. The professor was right to call out the fact that conservatism is not the exclusive party of wealthy white privileged males. He was also right to call out the bias in the population in the room and it's easy to see here that bias is at play with some of the interpretations of the video.
Democrats are the most bigoted
Bingo
Many African Americans are very conservative- the GOP needs to cultivate that base more than we do now. Latinos share more values with me than any of these students.
Labels are so often inaccurate
There is an easy way to blow up this whole 'conservatives are the rich party' thing. Go to a county-by-county Presidential election map (the NY Times has a good one). Pick a Presidential election year, say 2016, 2012, 2008... What you'll see is a sea of red, punctuated with blue islands. Those blue islands often are the larger metro areas: LA, San Fran, Seattle, Chicago, etc. The red areas tend to be the more rural areas (compare upstate NY with NYC, for example). Now tell me, where do you think the rich people live - in the rural areas or the larger metro areas?
Conservatism is based on a long history, not on speculation and emotion.
And reality.
Take what works, discard what doesn't.
It's the tale of the Ant & The Grasshopper.
Conservatism is absolutely based upon emotion - mostly cynicism and fear.
@@mytmouse57 Found the liberal
I don’t get the rich are conservatives I make $36,000 a year and by no means rich and consider myself a conservative. I love the approach that this teacher takes to get students to have a civil conversation on today’s issues. Won’t find this on many campuses.
Democrats on average have a 6% higher income than conservative Republicans and donate considerably less personal time and money to charities. This was the conclusion of a study, conducted by an ivy league professor, to see if what the democrats claimed was true.
In other words, Republicans make less money but gives more of it away to help others, along with their time.
Yeah i mean I didn’t meet a lot of liberals in factories or on roofs. Seems like working class is pretty normal for conservatives
@@dixonbuttes I've been doing landscaping and stonework for years. Pretty much the only time I meet liberals on the job, is when we're working around their mansions.
The vast vast vast majority of the working class are conservatives. Emphasis on "working" class. The narrative of the rich white conservative is laughable because the majority of rich white people are generally very liberal. Always have been. Hollywood, Treasure Valley, Silicone Valley, Carnegie Hill, Upper east Side of New York, Lincoln Park Chicago and the list goes on and on and on. Bill gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk (until very recently), Larry Ellison, Warren Buffet, Larry Page, Sergey Brin ect ect ect. All these billionaires are and have always been overwhelmingly democrats.
I'm conservative, I'm college educated, but squarely in the middle class. You'd laugh at my "savings" account.
Something to ponder: If conservatives are missing the experiences of disadvantage and barrier, and most conservatives are not wealthy, then how is poverty different for conservatives and liberals?
That is an excellent question. I think most of these students, no matter thier leanings, couldn't imagine the poverty I grew up in. Yet today, I am so far away from that simple start. We had no phone at all until I was 16 years old. My mother never had a car. I didn't have a car until I was 23. I worked every shit job you can think off. I had no idea we were that poor. I didn't realize this until I was an adult. I wasn't coddled. If I wanted something, I had to work and save for it. I think that is all the difference. I am fiercely conservative with my resources because I am acutely aware of what it took to aquire them.
Liberals have weaponized poverty. ie, "vote for me. I will save you from being poor or a victim of X".".
@@Riorozen maybe in 2023...but the reason that bums have cell phones is because leftist policy.

Its unhealthy and counter to evidence based cognitive behavioural therapy and the mental traps described therein. I hope this makes sense.
I agree.
Props to you my friend. You’ve seen the light.
Absolutely wonderful comment.
You could have stopped with, “I used to be liberal but then I worked.” Lol.
Kidding. Great story.
@@josephupton3601 Just another clapping seal.
I think the best consolidation of why conservatives advocate for small government is first because the constitution restricts the government powers and second because very often big government programs lead to unintended consequences. There are a bunch of videos that talk about unintended consequences of government programs, mostly by economists and libertarians. That seems to be what leftists miss and intentionally miss.
Iraq in the 70$ is a perfect sample
I voted Democrat for 27 years. It took some economics classes and honest evaluation of the effectiveness of Democrat policies to make me switch. It doesn't matter if the intent of the policy came from a place of empathy if the policy fails to produce the desired outcome. Most of these democrat policies make things worse.
Look no further than California to see the effects of “compassionate” policy led by democrats for decades. Maybe their policies would work if there wasn’t so much corruption in the system. Maybe… but probably not.
Regardless, we don’t know because there is corruption and there will always be corruption, which is another argument for smaller government. Smaller government, less government corruption.
Small government? GTFO of our bedrooms.
@douglemay7989 when your bedroom is marched down Main Street USA in assless chaps, under a rainbow flag, specifically for public consumption and popular promotion, don't act surprised if someone happens to notice, and potentially disapproves. If you don't want people all up in your bizness, don't force them to watch.
The "white privilege" premise is wrong. But there are "privileges". The "two parents in a household privilege". The "don't use drugs and alcohol privilege". The "don't have children out of wedlock privilege". The "work hard and save money for a rainy day privilege". The "don't have a victim mentality privilege". The "don't cover your body with tattoos and color your hair blue and wonder why everyone avoids you privilege".
2 parents you can't control, the rest are good life choices. Ppl gotta take responsibility for their lives
Absolutely true!
@@alicekoscianski But you can control it, for your children, conservativism is about what you can give, more so than liberalism.
@@alicekoscianskican’t control it, but it’s a valid point still. A stable and nurturing 2-parent household absolutely confers a privilege onto the children from a socioeconomic standpoint. I don’t think 2 parents by itself is enough of a condition- there’s plenty of incredibly dysfunctional families out there with 2 parents.
Your comments are both funny and right on point.

Send the excess ketchup to Mar A Lardo. A recent report shows that 75 MPH is its top speed.
Why is it that there millions of working poor if hard work pays off?
You don't know what the word "privelaged" means in this context.
Do you believe racists exist? Do you believe black people or white people are more likely to run into a racist?
Hard work paying off doesn't necessarily mean it will always get you ahead unfortunately. And that's something many conservatives don't seem to understand in our messed up corporate structures. However, liberals then make a similar mistake half the time and seem to take it as hard work being meaningless. The truth is actually somewhere in the middle, and if you find the right circumstances be it luck or otherwise, it will pay off much better.
Can I get your Ketchup soup recipe? Mine sucks.
In a nutshell, conservatism is all about smaller government and more individual responsibility and liberty. The more the government gets involved, the less freedom we have. When wanting these things gets you labeled an extremist you know the wrong system is in place.
Gotcha, so it's about liberty and freedom. Just checking in, would that be:
1. The freedom to terminate an unwanted or harmful pregnancy?
2. The freedom to marry any consenting adult you damn well please?
3. The freedom to not have to pay $800 for an ambulance ride?
4. The freedom to practice your religion and not be banned from entry by the President?
I mean, am I close? Or do you just care about your ability to PREVENT people from doing those things and having ACTUAL liberty?
@@Orson_Welp It's not even in the same ballpark, genius. So you're perfectly fine with killing a human being for the sake of convenience? And yes, contrary to your stupid leftist feelings a baby in the womb is a human being. But thanks for saying that it's ok to murder someone just because. Wanker.

turned down because you wernt black? you mean turned down for being an inbred stain more likely
I have a similar experience. It's a class thing.
I got accepted to an advanced high school during the 1970s. Only to have it rescinded because I was NOT black. I have been discriminated against several times for being White during my life. I have no doubt I would have gone much further up the ladder had I been Black or Female. Every "racist" I have known, in my life, was a Liberal.
@@tominva4121 Exactly. Liberals believe that a law requiring you to present your ID to vote is targeting black people, because liberals believe black people are too stupid and lazy to get a state issued ID. Conservatives don't put everyone into racial categories, there are lazy and hard working people, dumb and smart people, across all demographics, all should have the same chance to prove themselves.
My husband is an immigrant from a Central American communist country (he’s not white lol) and is conservative. He grew up in extreme poverty, put home self through college and makes a very good living for us. He’s conservative and loves the U.S. because he was able to have the opportunity to work hard and make something of himself. With hard work anything is possible and if he as a poor non English speaking non white person could make it so can anyone. Especially if you’re born here- nothing is standing in your way but you.
Actually, the belief that government will help them is precisely what is standing in their way. It is the only thing in anyone’s way, but it is in many people’s way.
Great respect!
I appreciate the professor's approach - kind of. One of the biggest challenges I have, as clearly demonstrated here, is that it's all focused on feelings. It was all about what people feel like conservatism is about. There was no effort to validate those feelings or identify some ojective truth. For example, looking at the party national platforms, or what key leadrers have described. There is value in the discussion and understanding how people feel, but the continued discussion reinforces stereotypes without introducing truths.
I think what’s clear is that many in the class have no idea was conservatism is and can’t even frame the main conservative values.
He effectively had them create a strawman of conservatism and then poke holes in that strawman. Then he validated incorrect ideas of what conservatism is to further influence his students.
He’s done some good work in exploring opposing viewpoints, but this isn’t that.
@@Zenith_Of_ChaosI agree wholeheartedly!!
That's a big problem in education over the past several decades, instead of teaching, lecturing and indoctrination in Sociology, the focus should be on Civics. These children couldn't pass a 6th grade Civics test from 1925.
A Conservative believes that if you find something that works, don't mess with it.
lol, that would make sense, if you had something that actually worked.
@@DellikkilleD 10,000 years of civilization DOES work. That's why all successful societies have the same things in common.
@@DellikkilleD Conservatives also believe that a policy will always be flawed but that perfection is impossible so it’s best to find what works best while making tweaks over long periods of time. To throw the baby out with the bath water is likely to make the situation worse than it was before as has been evidenced many times.
To conserve, yes.
The core ideas of liberalism change every year so it would be harder to identify them
I would say we are in an era of "modern liberalism", of which is no longer comparable to run of the mill liberalism of 40 years ago.
Yesterday's "woke" is today's oppressor in many cases. The goalposts move constantly with the left and it's got to the point where the term Liberalism no longer applies. There is nothing "liberal" about today's left, just as there was no liberalism in Mao's "Cultural Revolution".
True. Thomas Jefferson was a liberal. "Liberal" is a mutating virus.
I like this professor. He's trying to get these students to think outside of their own perspective. That's important. However, I'd love for a Conservative person to actually speak up and talk from their point of view about their misconceptions. Thinking that conservatives are missing an experience is incorrect. Conservatives believe that you can pull yourself out of the fire, that you dont need help to achieve your dreams, you just have to take a breath, pull up your pants, and bust through at full speed. Whatever challenge that shows up, you can overcome with sheer determination and hard work.
I hope that the next part of the lecture was to ask what liberals are missing.

What your students are missing is there are different “disadvantages”. Conservatives tend to be in rural areas and liberals tend to be more in urban areas. Each area has their own disadvantages. The overwhelming majority of your lecture focused on what conservatives are missing, but you aren’t teaching what liberals are missing.
Their entire premise is wrong anyways.

Equality or equity?..... you cannot have both.
If you want equality (everyone starts at the starting line on a level track), everyone will finish with different times....no equity.
If you want equity (everyone to finish together), some will need a head start or place obstacles in the way of the others in the race...no equality
I would even go as far to say that equality doesn't even have to start everyone at the same spot on the same even/flat track, it just ensures that the path, no matter how long or how difficult, is not littered with unnecessary obstacles.
I know the track i started on looks a lot different than the track that say Elon Musk's kids are starting on, but I want to know that the government is doing what it can to eliminate the obstacles not add more...and because i am a straight white man there are plenty of obstacles for me in 2023.

We are strict Constitutionalists.
We believe in small government
We strictly support common law based on penal and criminal codes used by Greeks, Romans, and passed down to Europe, then brought over to America.
We believe in religious freedom, even for pagans, provided they don't sacrifice animals or people.
We believe in low taxes and especially the promotion of small businesses.
We despise Communism and Socialism
We believe that family values are the bedrock of any thriving nation, and that family values should be promoted by the media and government.
We believe in legal immigration, but we also see millions of illegals as more of an invasion.
We are an independent nation, not a cabal to be driven or ran but the UN, World Bank, or NATO.
We despise slavery, which is why we fought so hard to end it. We don't like racism either, but we know that ethnicities have their differences and shouldn't be punished for these differences.
We think that the current welfare system encourages people to not work, which becomes a drain on society, and encourages people to become homeless instead of working to live, and living to work.
We believe that the media and Hollywood have become so far to the left, and have spit out so many lies, that they are dangerous and should be reformed.
We believe the Democrat Party is not American. That it has become a Fascist, Socialist party who wants to transform America without our consent.
This is the basics of what we believe. Sadly, there are some fundamentalist Christians who are very loud and say some really stupid things. We don't agree with them in as far as their religious convictions should not guide our nation. The liberal ideas of Locke, Kant, Plato, and writings of Jefferson and Hamilton should guide the nation, not the Bible.

Ugh this is painful to watch. You want conservative viewpoint? Fine. If the system (including the government) is corrupt, then how can you support the system to self regulate itself to fairness if you don't restrict the system from the gains it obtains when it's corrupt?
A system may be lax, but only people cause, create and profit from corruption. Punish the corrupt and close the loopholes.
@sundiver9074 Great, but it will even be better under Trump.
Good point about a bias being invisible to someone privileged but you're not going to find a single person that doesn't have to deal with some sort of bias every day. Hard work, dependability, and quality performance is the best way to deal with that.
Except depending on your position bias can either be extremely hard to overcome or easy to brush off.
The real bias in America isn't racism it's economic class. There is racism but this country hates poor people more than anything.
Look at OJ Simpson. He's black so he probably has to deal with bias. But he was also stupid rich. So he literally got away with murder. A poor white person would have been convicted 100%.
And depending on where you live in the country your ability to pull yourself out of poverty can be extremely different.
Growing up in California I thought community college was dirt cheap for everyone. I pulled myself out of poverty by going to community college to learn a trade. It worked it was hard but it worked.
Later I talked to someone from another area of the country and it blew my mind. I paid like $5/unit so a typical class was $15 plus the book so maybe $150 per class.
Then this dude tells me in his state community college is basically just as expensive as regular college. Didn't believe him until I looked it up. So basically the way I pulled myself out of poverty wouldn't have worked for me if I was simply born in another state.
According to the marxist progressive left, hard work, dependability, and quality performance are all white colonialism or something like that.
I would love to see another attempt at this type of conservative views conversation, maybe with a local speaker from a conservative political group or materials from conservative politcal platforms. I don't believe there was much representation of actual conservative views, mostly just assumptions or stereotypes. I think that short changed the students in this lecture in being able to understand the perspectives of politically conservative people. Understanding needs to happen in order to have more productive conversations.
He needs to bring Brandon Tatum in for that discussion. Man of color, conservative, ex police officer, and a church goer. Oh, and a trump supporter lol.
@@owenquail1184 and stop segregating students. When he had a discussion on being offended the none of the panelist were white. White people can't be offended now?

Exactly. Liberals trying to tell other liberals what conservatives think is going to be biased and usually wrong. You need to have a conservitive panel of speakers come to your class if you genuinely want to teach your kids about the conservitive perspective, not just reinforce stereotypes.

Not to say that Republican is the same as conservative, however, a higher percentage or Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than did Democrats. I see it as: conservatives want laws and rules applied equally to all citizens. We cannot fix the past, but we can do a better job of living up to the ideals that formed the nation, as detailed in the Constitution.
Republicans fought to free the slaves, Republicans voted to give them rights, Republicans were the first to elect black people into Congress, Republicans ended Jim Crow and separate but equal is equal.
There is absolutely nothing in the entire history of the democrat party that was actually positive for black people or minorities in America.
The Republicans were the friends of the black people back in the day, and still are for the most part I think. It got switched in people's heads somehow. The KKK was basically the police force for the Democratic party.
At that time there was more ideological mixture within the parties. The republicans were not cultural conservatives at that time. Try again

The conclusion that conservatives are missing the experience of being underprivileged is incorrect and the Professor waffles on it, he agrees right after admitting that the majority of Conservatives are not rich or even well off. What Conservatives are missing is the need to blame others for their issues and define themselves by their victimhood. Why would a Conservative teach this class, individuals have responsibility for themselves and their actions and when there are problems beyond yourself you look for solutions.
Simple answer is that he isn't a conservative teacher
"Individuals have responsibility for themselves"
Yes, and one of those responsibilities is to better understand the world and learn how to make better decisions for yourself and society. I would think that a conservative would be happy to facilitate that process.
I think the two students at the front doing most of the talking early on did a good job laying out our values.
I grew up in a single parent family we were dirt poor. I could not afford to go to College when I got out of High School. I went to work. Later in life I was able to go to a Technical College and receive and Associate Degree. Listening to these kids attempt to speak is painful. The "likes", "umms" and inability to formulate a clear thought is extremely telling of how poorly our educational institutions operate and how entertainment and pleasure is prioritized over education at an individual level.

I'm against MOST immigration, at least until the country becomes more stable. Until we can fix a lot of the cultural issues we're experiencing. Then, a slow trickle would be acceptable.
But, unfortunately, it's not fixable at this point. Pandora's box has been opened, and the devils are amongst us. It's all down hill from here, and not in a good way.
@@totallyunmemorable As long as people live, there is hope.
The cultural issues will never get “fixed” because the media deliberately foments cultural issues. It is a strategy by those in power: divide the people so the people don’t turn on the elites in power.
Black Lives Matter didn’t exist until the media began publicizing them after the Occupy Wall Street movement began. Occupy Wall Street was a protest against the elites. To distract people from that movement, the media started highlighting so-called racial injustices like unarmed black men getting targeted by police. This was the birth of BLM and it worked perfectly. The citizens turned on themselves and the Occupy Wall Street movement was forgotten about a week later.
@@totallyunmemorable i don't think it would be a difficult fix. Rather than spending the $160 billion on illegal aliens to remain in the US we just shift that money over into deporting them.

A lot there, from the ones I talk to it's knowledge, common sense, logic, and wisdom.
Conservatives and liberals both have huge blind spots, in my experience.
And don’t get your panties in a wad - he probably did a class critiquing liberalism too.
I don't think conservatives believe everyone starts out equal. The general belief for conservatives is that it doesn't matter where you start, your fate is in your hands.
As a conservative I find your classes really interesting.
As a conservative, I'd like to say that we DO see the barriers that our in our way, externally preventing us from being successful, however we have a fundamentally different view on them. We don't see a barrier and think, "someone of a different sort would've had success, I'm a victim of an unfair system", conservatives think "these are the barriers I'm currently dealing with, it's reality, can't change it from where i am right now, how am i going to overcome them?"
I was living on the streets at 13. I lived in the woods behind my high school in the 8th grade. I have done some horrible things to serve. I'm 51 now, and I have become extremely financially secure all by myself. This is only possible in the United States. Hard work, and the drive to never quit is all you need. Gov handouts do nothing but make it easy for people to give up on themselves.
I'd say we actually have the experience and we realize EVERYONE has a unique experience, it's not what we're missing it's what we have added
I was up until 3am last night watching these classes. What a blessing Sam is to his students. It’s wild to see people’s views on conservatives. I see value in every person and thing I experience/see. I can’t imagine being truly content or happy if I didn’t have my views 😅

Why on earth should it be?!
Growing up we were taught race doesn't matter because we are all created equal.
Whats wrong with these kids!
Conservative views= to save that which is proven over *generations* to be valuable & imperative to overall human success.
Their challenge can be to become too intractable.
Like children, progressive/liberal views are all about creativity & idealism but disconnected from reality or a clear sense of interactions or consequences.
Their challenge is dangerous indulgence.
Conservatives need to appreciate a child's sense of wonder. And Liberals need to respect wisdom & experience.
If you are a young conservative you are heartless, if you are an old liberal you are brainless.

I'm conservative. I grew up in low income housing, I had no money growing up, I lived in a poor neighborhood as a minority. It made me fight like hell to get out. You are either a victim or you're not. You have to learn to fight your way out. Being a victim is just deciding or being too lazy to fight for what you want. I'm not rich now, but I'm not poor anymore and I live a good life with a good family. I wouldn't have that if I spent my youth thinking I was a victim and that's why I can't succeed. It becomes a self fulfilled prophecy. Stop looking for something to blame and get inspired to be great. It's not as hard as you might think. Also, if you're starting out in a large major city, get out now. Find some place affordable to start your career. Work your way up, invest in property and keep leveling up whenever you see an opportunity. Get off TikTok and Instagram and build something. Ask for help from family and friends. The army or one is a myth.

I think the most interesting thing I found from this video is that this professor created such a safe space that those students with a conservative viewpoint feel safe enough to speak without immediately being persecuted and kicked out of the school.
Either this video is really old, or this professor is emotionally mature enough to realize that those with differing viewpoints still have value to the discussion.
Most universities would rather just have an echo chamber.

A very important pillar of conservatism, that has been forgotten over the years is to stay the heck out of debt. This goes for the government, corporations, and individuals. If balancing the budget is a requirement, and borrowing is strictly limited, entitlement programs will go away, necessarily. Our government is spending $3 for every $2 collected in taxes. “Traditional values,” and private charity, go along very well with a frugal society.

From reading the comments I'm concluding that most Americans are as self centred as a top. "Conservative" has zero to do with you or your Constitution, it's a political philosophy that spans the world.
When an American professor is lecturing in an American universe it is a pretty good assumption that he is talking about American politics :)
Also the vast majority of "conservatism" that exists outside of the US is still left of the US political center.
The ideology of conservatism is preserving something, yes? In the US the conservatives want to preserve the US constitution, the greatest experiment in individual freedom and liberty that has ever existed in human existence which pulled more people out of poverty in a shorter period of time than ever before in all of human history.

What conservatives are missing is that they believe everyone can move up in the world by "pulling themselves up by their bootstraps" even though we're all dealt a different hand of cards in life meaning our individual opportunities can vary widely.
But effort and not doing stupid things will always help. For example the huge number of single mother households in the black community and the fact that a small percent of the population is responsible for a large ammount of crime. I have been in jail and no one was innocent.
We believe social programs are there to provide the opportunities, but not really utilized often enough. So we are not against social programs, but we are against excuses. Stay in school, get secondary education - that is what is missing. Example- look at Ben Carson - he came from the projects, and he is a surgeon!
We also believe abortion is not a solution - getting rid of a healthy baby is not humane, that baby could be the next genius that cures Type I diabetes or other immune system diseases, or an educator or artist or ballet dancer. There are always going to be unequal outcomes, you cannot make everyone equal, we all have various talents and levels of intelligence and disabilities. No conservative expects a disabled person to not be taken care of, those persons NEED housing and healthcare and assistance, but able and capable people can certainly achieve a stable life and work and a home.
And? Where does the idea come from that equal outcomes are paramount? We live in society where so much is already done. Even those is lower economic echelons have more to access than 99% of humanity ever has.

Can you describe that more concretely? What are the in-group and out-group in this case? The closest I have been able to come up with is the in-group are US citizens, but conservatives have always believed that US citizens must be bound by the law, so I don't really know what this quote is going for.
The conservative approach is to not use government for social engineering. It is for ensuring rights guaranteed under the constitution, such as no discrimination and religious freedom.
Its a bad idea to believe conservative is a western thing. Conservatives are missing the same thing as Liberals. And Libertarians. And Anarchists. The experience from the opposite side of the spectrum. Conservatives have a particular experience that Liberals don't. Liberals have a particular experience that Libertarians don't. Each group is different. What keeps us divided is only discussing differences when we should be talking about similarities. Each group wants essentially to provide for the people they represent. I'm no party on my registration because I don't believe in parties. I am american. I have some conservative beliefs. I also agree on certain liberal beliefs. And certain Libertarian beliefs. I don't believe all answers should be conservative because I'm conservative on certain issues. I also don't believe all answers are liberal because I agree with certain liberal beliefs. I believe each person should have a well balanced belief system. When we start with ourselves, only then can we help the many.
