The remake is definitely going to fail, translating a manga very closely fails because the original is a manga, not an animation, the changes of the original are because it is making things work for an anime. The remake has no clue what it is doing and is trashy

As someone who did some minor translation work in the past, the most important thing in translation is accuracy to the original. If you alter the meaning from the original, you have failed as a translator.
They’ll just say “You don’t know anything about localization, if we didn’t change this stuff sentences wouldn’t make any sense” like they’ve been doing for the last decade or more.
Failed as a translator, but succeeded as a localiser - we cannot blame a factory worker for turning wheat into wonderbread; that's what American consumers want, even though it lacks flavour or nutritional value.
Making Ranma so accepting of feminine things, especially this early, kills his character which ruins the point. He is a man who has been raised to be super masculine, forced to confront femininity and learn to embrace that side of himself and even thru all that he still considered himself a guy but gains a little insight. Which I think is more progressive than changing his entire personality for a political ideology.

like in dragon ball super, the dub MADE to look like the two saiyans female are a lesbian couple. but in the anime and toriyama's manga, they're not. the relationship is between a boss and minion in a gang. they did this. what makes you think they'll change more details further.
They did the opposite in the original Sailor Moon, Neptune and Uranus were de-lesbianised in the US release at the time. If they did that release today, they would be celebrated instead of hidden lol.

As a little polyglot I thought it would be interesting to go and check this scene in other dubbed languages. This Remake is dubbed in 10 languages (11 if we count the 2 Spanish dubs for Spain and Latin America). Of which I can understand 8: English, both Spanish versions, Italian, French, Portuguese, German and Hungarian. And yeah, in all of them except for English what Ranma says in that scene is the translation of "Who are you calling a girl?/ what about me is a girl?". I checked even some subtitles of other languages that I understand that don't have a dubbed version, like Dutch, Catalan, Korean, Danish, Swedish, Galician and Romanian...always the same translation. So, congratulations to the English speakers. You are leading the world in wokeness 😜
Interesting. The Japanese language with English subtitles is spot on (studied Japanese for a few years). Its literally just the English dub and English dub subtitles that are changed
As far as german dubs/subs are concerned, I can give a little insight. Back in "ye olden days", we used to have terrible dubs and subs and oftentimes they were made by directly translating the english script, which was obviously an already processed localization. Fans back then complained A LOT and when anime/manga started really booming towards the late 90s and early/late 2000s, we started doing more faithful, direct translations from the japanese script. So, while I still don't particularly enjoy dubbed anime, I can at the very least, rest somewhat easy in knowing that the translation will probably not be infested with w o k e. For now.
You guys should report that to the japanese publisher and creator(whos a woman btw) if you can because its localized correctly here in Germany. Here he says "How dare you call me a girl" in german.
Well, its not a localizer's job to translate. That's the translator's job. Localizer's job is to adjust/adapt a translated script into a form the audience you aiming for can understand.

Takahashi is the one who pushed for "bold changes" in Urusei Yatsura (2022) and is likely fully on board with the changes being made to Ranma. She's on record saying that she wants the shows based on her works to be popular with young people, including foreigners.

And he quit the Netflix version before he could even get to the credits of the first episode. If you lose a fan like that, then who is this for?
If you're wondering what he spotted in the original. It was "Mine are bigger" or something like that. And later on Ranma walks in on Akane and she looks down, seeing that Ranma's are indeed bigger. She then gets super mad and slaps him. All of that was completely changed.
She doesn't even look down anymore as well. So even the animation ignores the meaning of the original. Instead now she slaps him because he saw her. But in the original she isn't mad until she looks down at his chest.

I remember decades ago getting fansubs on VHS tape. The fansubs would have intros where it would explain Japanese culture in scenes that will appear to understand the faithful translation instead of changing the dialouge drastically.

For the second scene with Ranma being thrown into the pond, the dub of the original actually had a better translation of the original Japanese compared to the sub you showed. Genma says 女々しいぞ、らんま！ The adjective 女々しい (memeshii) is means something like "weak", "indecisive" or just in general not manly. The word is made up of repeating the word for woman (女, which can be read as "me" in certain contexts) twice, and turning it into an adjective. Genma is literally saying "You're acting/speaking like a woman, Ranma!". Regarding your questions about the Japanese version of the show: I'm watching this show on Netflix in Japan, and I can at least tell you that the version I had was the same that you're watching. As far as I know, there's no other version, so the joke has been lost completely in the remake I think. That said, I do still appreciate this remake. I'm of course watching it in Japanese and I don't have to worry about localizers, and even if some of the jokes from the original are lost even in the Japanese version, I still appreciate the re-visit to a story that I've already experienced in anime and manga, and which I did so many years ago. The animation and overall presentation for the remake is great, and its existence doesn't take away from the existence of the original or the manga. Moreover, it's true that it might be skipping some scenes, but I don't think it's bad to have a version with better pacing, similar to what happened with Urusei Yatsura.
The Japanese dialogue for what Genma says changed in this case. In the remake Genma says: いつまでもしつこいぞらんま, which would translate to something like: you're forever obstinate Ranma.
@@MistyKathrine I know. I'm comparing the sub and dub versions of the original anime, which were showed in the video. The subbed version translated the line as "Be a man, Ranma!", which is not a bad translation but it does obscure the joke a bit.
No, that's actually the opposite of what that means. Trying to make "un-manly" behaviors in men more acceptable is pro-gay, not pro-trans. The trans community has a complicated relationship with feminism, because most trans people WANT to conform to gender stereotypes...just not those of the sex they were born with. (If 2nd-wave feminism's concept of "gender is a social construct" was true, then trans people wouldn't exist at all.) But the line is problematic for Ranma because he's been raised in such a misogynistic environment he would NEVER let himself be seen that way.

The writers of Astérix had, for one of their first albums (Astérix and the Goths), the mispleasure of seeing the album rewritten in the german translation. After that, they started asking another translator to back-translate the localised versions for which they do not speak the language, to see if there is any departure from the original meaning.
I hope every company in Japan starts using A.I. to do their own translations, cheaper, more accurate, and these people need to lose their jobs for this.
This kind of stuff is really good motivation to keep me making ancient Japanese culture and storytelling accessible out of sheer indignation. Ancient cultures were likely less hateful of trans and gay people, but there is a huge difference between tolerance and acceptance. Japanese society has always been fairly tolerant, whereas in the christian and muslim world there are many who believe gay people are an affront to their almighty god, who made them that way so that they may suffer, because that is the work of a truly benevolent and caring creator. And if you ask many people in japan today, they are much more accepting of the right to transition or be married as a gay person than the war crime denying LDP.

I remember back in the 90s when this was one of my favorite Manga series. I watched all the anime and bought all the comics, in both English and Japanese. The remake is more faithful to the manga, if you want to know if something was cut, you need to compare to the manga, not the old anime. The 80's anime had a lot of extra scenes and filler that do not happen in the original manga. And regarding the dub, I always watch everything in the original audio because they always adapt the dubbing.
So well said! Yes, honestly I'm a massive ranma1/2 fan (and I love the manga) - but I completely understand their choice of translations for the remake! Some of the lines just wouldn't (and shouldn't) work in 2024/2025. If you want the "funny"/ "rude"or the original version, watch the old one or better yet read the manga. Simple as that.
Ranma ½ is my favorite anime/manga. I love the 80's anime but I also like that the remake is being more faithful to the manga. I think we can watch and love both versions. But I recommend the original audio in japanese. 😊
I did that tho. in the manga genma calls ranma 女々しぞい爛漫・ memeshizo is like calling someone little crying girl or sissy. for whining about jusenkyou in other words *you are being a sissy Ranma!* In the new anime he says いつぉまでもしつこいぞ爛漫 -you are always so persistent Ranma! The original anime the scene carried out differently , he says that when throwing ranma, but in the manga and the new anime its after. however the line was the same in the original anime. In the new anime, the events are the same but Genma line was changed.

That's why when Illumi calls Killua and tells him that "family is off-limits", he implies that Alluka is not part of their family, just seeing Ai as another thing. In Japanese, they don't make the honorific about gender, it's about family membership.
@trime1015 Japan likes to be fairly subtle/interpretive and is REALLY into playing with gender roles. Even if the original translation did not say anything outloud, that could still be the main intent for all we know.

The issue is with the dub translation - and the closed captioning of the English dub. Thankfully, the subtitles on Netflix for the English translation when watching in Japanese remain accurate. "Don't talk like a girl in the middle of a fight" from Ryoga. Ranma responds with "Who you callin' a girl?" when getting mad back. No discussion of clothing. So it's not the subtitles in English that are a problem, but the dub and the English (CC) closed captioning for the dub - you'll notice two different options on Netflix. Stick with the English subtitles and you avoid this mess.

Yeah, but the Latin American dub is being criticized due to the fact that Ranma and female Ranma's original dub VA were replaced, despite the fact that they are still active and had demonstrated that they're still capable of sounding kind of like they did more than 20 years ago. Now both Ranmas are both by younger VAs, and I find it a little interesting that both of them are part of the LGBT+ community, Ranma's new VA, Elliot Leguizamo, is openly gay, while female Ranma's new VA, Alicia Vélez, identities as non-binary. Now, I have nothing against them, in fact, I really like Alicia's voice in many other projects, and their female Ranma's performance is fine though not as iconic as Irma Carmona's, while Elliot is not as good as Carlos Hugo Hidalgo or even Luis Daniel Ramírez, and to be fair Elliot got into a bit of controversy when he falsely accused an actor of harassment, but it's seems like a weird coincidence that Ranmas' new VAs are LGBT
@@gods12345 I actually like Alicia's voice, they have voiced plenty of other anime characters like Momo in Dan Da Da (Crunchyroll's dub), Noelle Silva in Black Clover, Foo Fighters in Stone Ocean, Hinata in Tokyo Revengers, Nero Claudius in Fate/Extra, Elizabeth in Seikon no Qwaser, Shiho Shishido in Jitsu wa Watashi wa, among others, and they have done a great. Alicia is also the daughter of Humberto Vélez, best know for being Homer Simpson's voice, and Cony Madera, know for voicing Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid.

I remember reading this manga back in the 1990s. When I looked up who made Ranma 1/2, I was surprised to find that a woman wrote it. I thought, that's cool. Now the left have desecrated this woman's work. Disgraceful.

Makes me very happy that, aside from the Rumic World episode, I have the entirety of the original on DVD. Yep, some of the animation looks cleaner, but the audio is definitely hit or miss. Some of the voice acting is good (Akane’s VA hits the mark most of the time), but most of the time I’m underwhelmed because they’re underwhelming. Not emoting enough, and it took me a moment to remember why. Ranma is a martial-arts-themed slapstick romantic comedy, and the keyword there is “slapstick”. These characters are meant to be exaggerated and a little cartoony, and I think the localiars forgot that more than anything.
One counterpoint on a technicality. The reason the closed caption ([CC]) subtitles match the English dub is because that is the purpose of CC subtitles. CC is for the deaf and hard of hearing, so by the industry standards they must be accurate to the audible dialog and sounds presented so a hearing-impaired viewer gets the same experience as a hearing person who is with them. This doesn’t excuse the junk job by the localizers, but otherwise there is nothing nefarious about the differences in the normal English subtitles and the English [CC] subtitles.

I don't know, as a foreigner who sometimes use subtitles for English movies (especially for the scenes where people are whispering their lines) I get to see some dialogues that are far from what is being said
@@Fenris30Well, no. Localisation is about presenting the intent of the work in a way that the new audience understands, when they wouldn’t have the original. Heavy cultural references for example. Or if a joke revolved around a local politician the localisation might be switching that with a politician from the target audiences country, preserving the idea behind the joke even if the exact details (the politician in question) change. However, just changing things that don’t require changes to be understood is precisely mistranslation.
At this point. Anime/Japanese game localizations feel downright malicious. It's really sad that THESE are the people that handle the media we love. I wish people who love the medium where the translators. This is also why people are resorting to sail the high seas rather than supporting these companies. If they wont put the effort to give us a accurate translation, why should people even bother to open their wallets or even pay full price for it?
Welp, I fully expected this kind of nonsense to happen with the remake, while I wouldn't mind having Ranma's curse, he's ADAMANTLY OPPOSED to the idea of being feminine, and it's utterly disrespectful to the original creator to spin this bs narrative into the 'localisation' of the remake.
It makes complete sense for Ranma to be this defensive about his masculinity, directly because of the conflict between his Jusenkyo Curse, and his upbringing at the hands of his father. He's going to have an extreme reaction to ANY perceived/actual attack on his masculinity, and since that attack took place during physical combat, the end result is an attack out of anger on Ryoga. While I fully disagree with the notion that Ranma's reaction is to be taken as a real-life message, since it's not wrong for a person of one gender to have hobbies/personality trait that don't line up with the traditional norms....it IS very much out-of-character for Ranma to say the line that he did in the 2024 English dub. The English (CC) is the closed-captioned subtitle track, which is SUPPOSED to be a 1:1 to the English dub track, as it's an accommodation for the deaf/hard-of-hearing. If you're going to watch this on Netflix and with the Japanese audio, just make sure you've switched the subtitles to "English", and not "English (CC)". That being said, the vandalization does NOT seem to have affected the actual English subtitles, as "who're you callin' a girl?" would be quite appropriate for Ranma to say. He's a very rough person, not much for social formalities outside of things like combat rituals (if even that), and this line works more effectively in the scene playing out (as Ranma equates Ryoga's insult of a supposed interest to an attack on his very identity). You'd be right in saying that it's not the absolutely most accurate translation, but it still is an effective one. On top of that, the 1989 dub was recorded at a time where the US dubbing industry was really beginning to take their work seriously, getting away from things like Carl Macek's hatchet-job of Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospaeda. Ocean Group may not have been seasoned veterans of dubbing, but they absolutely DID care about the quality of the work they wanted to put out. Later in the first season, there's a nice comedy bit using wordplay (when Ranma's trying to get Akane to remember him after Shampoo hits her with the memory-wipe shampoo). He tries to jog her memory of his name, but she keeps confusing it with other words that end in the "-ma" syllable. When this scene was dubbed and localized, they DID replace all the other words she confused him with to references that were more familiar to an English-speaking audience, but ALL OF THEM began with the "ran-" syllable. This is what a localizer is SUPPOSED to do, and not what they did in the '24 dub.
Something I really liked in the Viz releases from the previous decade. I was confused why Ranma-girl-type/Ranma-chan sounded like a Jersey Girl. Then I noticed that boy-type was voiced to resemble Daniel Laruso (the protagonist of Karate Kid). It may not have been intended in Takahashi's original. But to an American audience, it conveys the masculine nature of the character. Even if you don't catch the impression as such.
Yeah, in japanese there are certain ways to speak that come off as more feminine or masculine (like the presented "I" pronoun for example) which would not be possibly translated into english. So one job of localizers is not just to translate but to give off the intentions of the work, which in this case is that ranma talks in a very masculine way. Its sad that not all modern localizers seem to have great intention when it comes to localizing foreign property
I had to look up that scene of Genma chucking Ranma back into the backyard pond a second time in the manga. Apparently, he does say "You sound like a WOMAN! Were you not prepared to give your life for the sake of your training?!"
sailor moon classic got a new dub that was said to be uncensored and yet they still censored and changed lines. even lines that didn't need to be censored. for instance, in sailor moon r Chibiusa is waiting to get picked up from her swim class and while waiting with one of her classmates he starts to cry bc of the rain and thunder. she then says he shouldn't cry bc he is a boy. they changed it in the new dub to something like "don't worry they'll be here soon" in the following season sailor moon s, when the outer guardians attack Hotaru, Chibiusa jumps in the way to protect her from the blast, in the japanese version Usagi says "CHIBIUSA" you know as a mother would do. it was a closeup on her face wi/ little to no mouth flaps and for some reason they changed it in the dub to "Look out!" liiiike what?? Usagi's daughter is about to be murdered and she just says to look out? such a disappointment. I was so looking forward to it. on top of that the actress who plays Usagi can't even say chibiusa's name without sounding like she's choking on the name.
I served in Japan on my mission and have to this day kept up my Japanese as best as I could. I instantly heard the difference in the two languages and what they meant. I could go into a bit more detail than what was presented in this video, but it's not totally necessary. Woah, Shad speaking Japanese via AI is freaking impressive...like the fact that it doesn't sound like a monotone robo translation like Google Translate or other text-to-speech apps, keeping the intonations. I'm amazed at how far and good AI is getting year by year. I bet you could even use AI to manipulate the video so that the audio also matches the lip movement as well.
This is why I watch fansubs. They don't bastardize anime. And when the anime is available for purchase, I buy it directly from Japan. It costs more, but I'd rather my money go straight to the source than support any of the Western corporations via bunny hopping through their BS distribution, etc.
There's the english subtitle, which remains accurate, and the English (CC) - closed captioning which is supposed ot accurately reflect the dub script. The problem with the localization here is entirely on that dub script.
The german dub is also done by Iyone and interestingly the translations are in line with the original in the first scene. This must be a very american centric localization issue but is certainly not a problem across the entire western world. The second scene that was criticised here is likely not even cut in the japanese original. The remake is vastly closer to the manga, by both panel and dialogue. In the original, the line Genma added before throwing Ranma into the pond is an anime only fabrication. In the remake it is closer to the manga and was left out since it never happened in the manga either. Genma's comment about Ranma 'sounding like a woman' was done after he threw Ranma into the pond. That was however left out in both the english and german version and replaced with something more generic. This is not a remake of the original anime, this is a remake that leans insanely close to the manga. I would expect that this time there will be no fillers and things like the order of when Shampoo appears to be correct. Or anime only characters like Sasuke to not exist. And so far this seems to also apply to anime added lines.
It's funny that while watching this video I checked the fan sub translation and it's actually accurate to the japanese. Meaning the fans translate better and more accurate than pro's
Remaking old anime in general rubs me the wrong way. Japanese media's strength is its ability to push out new content. I don't want rehashes of the stuff I got from twenty years ago. I want new content that only the japanese can provide. As for localizers, they have been butchering mockeries since before I was watching in the '80s. That is one profession I will be glad to see buried by AI.
i started watching anime in the 90s my introduction was sailor moon, i was blessed with watching it in the original japanese with english subtitles, we wouldn't get the dubbed version in the UK untill much later. i went to rewatch years later and found a place to watch it dubbed i started a rewatch and it soon became aparrent that the dub was not faithful in places as i remember a few conversation being different in the sub. so like any curious person (that had half convinced themselves they were mistaken and were mildly loosing their mind) i went and checked the episodes between subs and dubs and to my shock i wasn't going out of my mind the dub was differnt to the sub givng a few conversations an almost completely differnet context so i switched back to the jp voices and en subtitles since then i have always watched anime with japanese voiceover with as close as possible english subtitles as i can get, there were a few things i watced that i even had to go out and find fansubs for as the "official" subtitles were not faithful at all. localisers are hired to do one job translate the original text/voiceover into their native language, but some just cant help themselves and have to project their own personal beliefs into it, then they wonder why a lot of jp studiios are looking at AI as an alternitive . . .screaching about loosing their jobs, all i have to say of the is They should have done their job properly.
Got mixed feelings on this. On one hand, AI can do some nasty stuff to help push malicious mistranslations. On the other hand, it can be used to fight against it. If it gets good enough, the voice acting business will get more competitive because it will cut down on the need for multiple voice actors (especially bilingual ones) or can just replace them outright! Just like any tool, this can be used for good or evil.
I did not think it sounded like Shad at all, other than being in the same vocal range. Shad's voice is characterized by a sort of mellow, fuzzy edging, and the AI missed that entirely.
@@suburbanbanshee I think it was good enough as a proof of concept but yes I agree AI messes up enough that it needs more 'training' from actual people. Been seeing more AI translations in other media and frankly I can't blame them even if I do get a bit annoyed. Overt ideology can ruin good entertainment. You can put a message into entertainment without making it unnatural or cringe.

That is interesting, I'm watching the anime in French, and I find it funny and a bit sad how much some studios, just do not respect or care about the original material. In French, the dub felt more like a nostalgia throwback because they hired the same actors, that they used for the original show, and you feel the French actors and the translation have heart and care and really love or respect the original series and not try to change or try to turn something that isn't in the original show.
My sister and I grew up watching this (and many other) anime. We actually tracked down the original series on dvd after I came across seasons 4 and 5 at a second hand retail store in October. Didn't know about the remake of it till she informed me of it when I spotted the dvd box sets, and still haven't watched it due to weariness from translation changes like you both pointed out. The art style also seems less, more muted for lack of a better term. Thanks to both you (Shadiversity/Knight's watch) and Metatron for your content.
I think you're still being overly harsh on the Japanese side of this production. Your issue with the "joke" when Genma throws Ranma in the pond doesn't EXIST in the original manga. Ranma is sitting silently when Genma just grabs him to throw him in the water to "explain" their situation. I know the recently Sailor Moon remake is DEFINITELY more faithful to the manga, however it also has pacing issues and other problems because of it. Point being, it's certainly fair to like the original release more, but I don't think it's fair to criticize the Japanese side changes as being "woke".

I’m a huge fan of the original Rurouni Kenshin series (until the third season), but I’m also loving the new remake that has gone back to the original manga source. Some of the changes in the first season feel odd, but those were changes that remove the anime-created characters and story beats.
I agree with both of you, as said in another reply comment, one needs to be clear that the manga is the original and what needs to be compared with when talking about adding or removing.

The sub vs dub war now has a winner. But anime subtitles on Netflix just suck. I don't know why they refuse to buy better made subtitles. I was watching Kakegurui and the male MC greats the female MC calling her "Jabami-san". She then tells him to call her by her first name and he repeats his greeting by calls her "Yumeko-san" this time. In the subs, he calls her Yumeko the first time (because viewers are apparently too stupid to understand that Japanese people call each other by their last name), then she tells him to use her first name, and he calls her Yumeko AGAIN. Do they even proofread?!
For me, it defaulted to the subtitles because I'm normally on Japanese audio. I had to explicitly choose English (CC) to see the botched english dub version.
It's hilarious when the Screenwriters Guild fought so hard against AI only for groups to make a case *for* AI by bastardizing translations for their agenda.
16:00 I was going to say, as someone who has been watching the show English Sub (not the CC version), and as someone who has been on the lookout for this woke crap, I haven't seen anything blatantly woke in the subtitles, much to my relief. Glad I managed to pick the right subs to use. Also, as a long time fan of Ranma 1/2, despite the changes and cuts that are being done, I still will continue watching the remake. I still find it entertaining, some scenes outright making me laugh or emotional where it should. I understand that it is not the same as the original, and honestly, I don't expect it to be. Not completely. It's just another adaptation of a series I love, and I want to continue supporting the overall series as such. And despite some of the bad, there is still a lot of good things in this remake too. For example, I like the Japanese VAs they got for the show, Kuno being a surprising favorite with how he speaks. And the action animation is fluid and snappy. And I even like the comedic sound effect texts that show up, surprisingly. Bottom line, I'm still going to be giving this remake a chance, until something horrendously unforgivable happens. Some woke activists trying to push their agenda on the English side isn't going to drag this down for me.
Hey KnightsWatch: thank you for covering this I think you should ask what Japanese audience thinks about the changes and see if you can warn japan what is happening to the local versions of the shows here in western countries. I think the creators of the original work could possibly force them to change it back to how it was intended? Let us not just whine about it but actually DO something about this. Similar cenroship thing happened with Dragon Quest 3 remake. The creaotr of the DQ series mentioned he is against these changes that were forced upon the western release by the woke mob. I hate these woke activists and wish there was something we can do to punish them for ruining people's work. It is akin to a vandal that is putting graffiti on other people's artwork in a art gallery. It's disgusting! Why can't these people just create their own stories and comics???? Keep making more of these videos. It reminds fans our hobbies are in constant attack. What our goal should be is raise awareness of the problem for the wider topic of free speech. It's NOT ok to change the creator's works like this. What I imagine in future is uncensored editions are made for the fans translated by japan. (sort of like directors cut)) The uncensored versions may even have documentary feature covering the differences of the western version to the original so fans know why it exist. If sales of uncensored edition are high enough over woke tampered version, then it justifies the release of the fixed editions. Since anime is now mainstream today the extra effort is worth it. Younger audiences would not be as familar with older anime so they may not be aware of these subtle woke changes.

I had the impression that English fansubs largely went away a decade ago because official translations have appeared for practically every anime at the same time it came out in Japan. Whereas fansubs thrived prior to that when most anime were not being translated to English either at all or not without months or more delays. So before fansubs let people see things in a timely manner, but now they don't, so most of the point of them is gone.
I am so curious about how they will handle Ranma's reasoning for why he is training before he is allowed to go back home to his mother. Ranma's mother will force Ranma to commit seppuku if he cannot become a "man among men." If she finds out that he changes into a girl, it means death for him. How are they going to translate that?
That’s weird because for me when it’s English subtitles and Japanese dialogue Ranma says “Who are you callin a girl” and when it’s English dialogue with subtitles it says “Who says liking clothes is girlie”
Shad was using the closed caption ([CC]) subtitles (a transcription of the English dialogue for the hearing-impaired) instead of the normal English translation subtitles.
We have already seen AI that can make your eyes seem like they are looking at the camera even when you are looking down reading from a notes sheet, I wonder how long until the AI can not only translate but also match the mouth movements.
I miss the silent pile drivers scene with just the music from when Akane slapped Ranma and Ryouga immediately after the hair incident. It was metaphoric without actually showing or hearing what happened.

I hope people are sending the creator and the japanese animation company this stuff with the japanese explanation of what's going on with these woke activist sub translations. I think they would do something about it if enough overseas viewers complain. Most don't even know they are getting lied to with the subs. If everyone knew this was going on I think most people would agree this is unacceptable to change the source.
Messing up the translation is espescially scummy, people don't have any choice but to trust the translators and they are taken advantage of. I don't want to watch any more anime on streaming services nor anything translated in the past 10 years.

The remake is definitely going to fail, translating a manga very closely fails because the original is a manga, not an animation, the changes of the original are because it is making things work for an anime. The remake has no clue what it is doing and is trashy

Making Ranma so accepting of feminine things, especially this early, kills his character which ruins the point. He is a man who has been raised to be super masculine, forced to confront femininity and learn to embrace that side of himself and even thru all that he still considered himself a guy but gains a little insight. Which I think is more progressive than changing his entire personality for a political ideology.

@@cheeseburgersuperior1874 I know I first truly began to notice issues when I saw a dubbed scene from Aggretsuko. I thought the dialogue seemed off for Japanese office culture so I found the same scene in original audio. Was shocked at how terrible and extreme they changed it.
As a little polyglot I thought it would be interesting to go and check this scene in other dubbed languages. This Remake is dubbed in 10 languages (11 if we count the 2 Spanish dubs for Spain and Latin America). Of which I can understand 8: English, both Spanish versions, Italian, French, Portuguese, German and Hungarian. And yeah, in all of them except for English what Ranma says in that scene is the translation of "Who are you calling a girl?/ what about me is a girl?". I checked even some subtitles of other languages that I understand that don't have a dubbed version, like Dutch, Catalan, Korean, Danish, Swedish, Galician and Romanian...always the same translation.
So, congratulations to the English speakers. You are leading the world in wokeness 😜

Interesting. The Japanese language with English subtitles is spot on (studied Japanese for a few years). Its literally just the English dub and English dub subtitles that are changed

As far as german dubs/subs are concerned, I can give a little insight. Back in "ye olden days", we used to have terrible dubs and subs and oftentimes they were made by directly translating the english script, which was obviously an already processed localization. Fans back then complained A LOT and when anime/manga started really booming towards the late 90s and early/late 2000s, we started doing more faithful, direct translations from the japanese script. So, while I still don't particularly enjoy dubbed anime, I can at the very least, rest somewhat easy in knowing that the translation will probably not be infested with w o k e. For now.

Well, its not a localizer's job to translate. That's the translator's job. Localizer's job is to adjust/adapt a translated script into a form the audience you aiming for can understand.

Takahashi is the one who pushed for "bold changes" in Urusei Yatsura (2022) and is likely fully on board with the changes being made to Ranma. She's on record saying that she wants the shows based on her works to be popular with young people, including foreigners.

My roommate spotted changes in the first episode. He's a massive fan. He has the full collection on VHS/DVD. And he quit the Netflix version before he could even get to the credits of the first episode. If you lose a fan like that, then who is this for?
If you're wondering what he spotted in the original. It was "Mine are bigger" or something like that. And later on Ranma walks in on Akane and she looks down, seeing that Ranma's are indeed bigger. She then gets super mad and slaps him. All of that was completely changed.
She doesn't even look down anymore as well. So even the animation ignores the meaning of the original. Instead now she slaps him because he saw her. But in the original she isn't mad until she looks down at his chest.
I wouldn't watch the new Ranma even if they slapped me in the face with a wad of cash. 🤣

I remember decades ago getting fansubs on VHS tape. The fansubs would have intros where it would explain Japanese culture in scenes that will appear to understand the faithful translation instead of changing the dialouge drastically.

For the second scene with Ranma being thrown into the pond, the dub of the original actually had a better translation of the original Japanese compared to the sub you showed.
Genma says 女々しいぞ、らんま！
The adjective 女々しい (memeshii) is means something like "weak", "indecisive" or just in general not manly. The word is made up of repeating the word for woman (女, which can be read as "me" in certain contexts) twice, and turning it into an adjective. Genma is literally saying "You're acting/speaking like a woman, Ranma!".
Regarding your questions about the Japanese version of the show: I'm watching this show on Netflix in Japan, and I can at least tell you that the version I had was the same that you're watching. As far as I know, there's no other version, so the joke has been lost completely in the remake I think.
That said, I do still appreciate this remake. I'm of course watching it in Japanese and I don't have to worry about localizers, and even if some of the jokes from the original are lost even in the Japanese version, I still appreciate the re-visit to a story that I've already experienced in anime and manga, and which I did so many years ago. The animation and overall presentation for the remake is great, and its existence doesn't take away from the existence of the original or the manga. Moreover, it's true that it might be skipping some scenes, but I don't think it's bad to have a version with better pacing, similar to what happened with Urusei Yatsura.
The Japanese dialogue for what Genma says changed in this case. In the remake Genma says: いつまでもしつこいぞらんま, which would translate to something like: you're forever obstinate Ranma.

The subbed version translated the line as "Be a man, Ranma!", which is not a bad translation but it does obscure the joke a bit.

(If 2nd-wave feminism's concept of "gender is a social construct" was true, then trans people wouldn't exist at all.)
But the line is problematic for Ranma because he's been raised in such a misogynistic environment he would NEVER let himself be seen that way.

The writers of Astérix had, for one of their first albums (Astérix and the Goths), the mispleasure of seeing the album rewritten in the german translation. After that, they started asking another translator to back-translate the localised versions for which they do not speak the language, to see if there is any departure from the original meaning.

Ancient cultures were likely less hateful of trans and gay people, but there is a huge difference between tolerance and acceptance. Japanese society has always been fairly tolerant, whereas in the christian and muslim world there are many who believe gay people are an affront to their almighty god, who made them that way so that they may suffer, because that is the work of a truly benevolent and caring creator. And if you ask many people in japan today, they are much more accepting of the right to transition or be married as a gay person than the war crime denying LDP.

The remake is more faithful to the manga, if you want to know if something was cut, you need to compare to the manga, not the old anime. The 80's anime had a lot of extra scenes and filler that do not happen in the original manga. And regarding the dub, I always watch everything in the original audio because they always adapt the dubbing.
So well said! Yes, honestly I'm a massive ranma1/2 fan (and I love the manga) - but I completely understand their choice of translations for the remake! Some of the lines just wouldn't (and shouldn't) work in 2024/2025. If you want the "funny"/ "rude"or the original version, watch the old one or better yet read the manga. Simple as that.
Ranma ½ is my favorite anime/manga. I love the 80's anime but I also like that the remake is being more faithful to the manga. I think we can watch and love both versions. But I recommend the original audio in japanese. 😊

That's why when Illumi calls Killua and tells him that "family is off-limits", he implies that Alluka is not part of their family, just seeing Ai as another thing. In Japanese, they don't make the honorific about gender, it's about family membership.
@trime1015 Japan likes to be fairly subtle/interpretive and is REALLY into playing with gender roles. Even if the original translation did not say anything outloud, that could still be the main intent for all we know.

However, it is entirely different from what "the west" understands of the politics surrounding gender dysphoria. Thankfully, the subtitles on Netflix for the English translation when watching in Japanese remain accurate.

So it's not the subtitles in English that are a problem, but the dub and the English (CC) closed captioning for the dub - you'll notice two different options on Netflix. Stick with the English subtitles and you avoid this mess.

Yeah, but the Latin American dub is being criticized due to the fact that Ranma and female Ranma's original dub VA were replaced, despite the fact that they are still active and had demonstrated that they're still capable of sounding kind of like they did more than 20 years ago. Now both Ranmas are both by younger VAs, and I find it a little interesting that both of them are part of the LGBT+ community, Ranma's new VA, Elliot Leguizamo, is openly gay, while female Ranma's new VA, Alicia Vélez, identities as non-binary. Now, I have nothing against them, in fact, I really like Alicia's voice in many other projects, and their female Ranma's performance is fine though not as iconic as Irma Carmona's, while Elliot is not as good as Carlos Hugo Hidalgo or even Luis Daniel Ramírez, and to be fair Elliot got into a bit of controversy when he falsely accused an actor of harassment, but it's seems like a weird coincidence that Ranmas' new VAs are LGBT

Alicia is also the daughter of Humberto Vélez, best know for being Homer Simpson's voice, and Cony Madera, know for voicing Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid.

Yep, some of the animation looks cleaner, but the audio is definitely hit or miss. Some of the voice acting is good (Akane’s VA hits the mark most of the time), but most of the time I’m underwhelmed because they’re underwhelming. Not emoting enough, and it took me a moment to remember why.
Ranma is a martial-arts-themed slapstick romantic comedy, and the keyword there is “slapstick”. These characters are meant to be exaggerated and a little cartoony, and I think the localiars forgot that more than anything.
One counterpoint on a technicality. The reason the closed caption ([CC]) subtitles match the English dub is because that is the purpose of CC subtitles. CC is for the deaf and hard of hearing, so by the industry standards they must be accurate to the audible dialog and sounds presented so a hearing-impaired viewer gets the same experience as a hearing person who is with them.
This doesn’t excuse the junk job by the localizers, but otherwise there is nothing nefarious about the differences in the normal English subtitles and the English [CC] subtitles.

I don't know, as a foreigner who sometimes use subtitles for English movies (especially for the scenes where people are whispering their lines) I get to see some dialogues that are far from what is being said
@@Fenris30Well, no. Localisation is about presenting the intent of the work in a way that the new audience understands, when they wouldn’t have the original. Heavy cultural references for example. Or if a joke revolved around a local politician the localisation might be switching that with a politician from the target audiences country, preserving the idea behind the joke even if the exact details (the politician in question) change. However, just changing things that don’t require changes to be understood is precisely mistranslation.
At this point. Anime/Japanese game localizations feel downright malicious. It's really sad that THESE are the people that handle the media we love. I wish people who love the medium where the translators.
This is also why people are resorting to sail the high seas rather than supporting these companies. If they wont put the effort to give us a accurate translation, why should people even bother to open their wallets or even pay full price for it?

Welp, I fully expected this kind of nonsense to happen with the remake, while I wouldn't mind having Ranma's curse, he's ADAMANTLY OPPOSED to the idea of being feminine, and it's utterly disrespectful to the original creator to spin this bs narrative into the 'localisation' of the remake.

It makes complete sense for Ranma to be this defensive about his masculinity, directly because of the conflict between his Jusenkyo Curse, and his upbringing at the hands of his father. He's going to have an extreme reaction to ANY perceived/actual attack on his masculinity, and since that attack took place during physical combat, the end result is an attack out of anger on Ryoga.
While I fully disagree with the notion that Ranma's reaction is to be taken as a real-life message, since it's not wrong for a person of one gender to have hobbies/personality trait that don't line up with the traditional norms....it IS very much out-of-character for Ranma to say the line that he did in the 2024 English dub.
The English (CC) is the closed-captioned subtitle track, which is SUPPOSED to be a 1:1 to the English dub track, as it's an accommodation for the deaf/hard-of-hearing. If you're going to watch this on Netflix and with the Japanese audio, just make sure you've switched the subtitles to "English", and not "English (CC)".
That being said, the vandalization does NOT seem to have affected the actual English subtitles, as "who're you callin' a girl?" would be quite appropriate for Ranma to say. He's a very rough person, not much for social formalities outside of things like combat rituals (if even that), and this line works more effectively in the scene playing out (as Ranma equates Ryoga's insult of a supposed interest to an attack on his very identity). You'd be right in saying that it's not the absolutely most accurate translation, but it still is an effective one. On top of that, the 1989 dub was recorded at a time where the US dubbing industry was really beginning to take their work seriously, getting away from things like Carl Macek's hatchet-job of Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospaeda. Ocean Group may not have been seasoned veterans of dubbing, but they absolutely DID care about the quality of the work they wanted to put out. Later in the first season, there's a nice comedy bit using wordplay (when Ranma's trying to get Akane to remember him after Shampoo hits her with the memory-wipe shampoo). He tries to jog her memory of his name, but she keeps confusing it with other words that end in the "-ma" syllable. When this scene was dubbed and localized, they DID replace all the other words she confused him with to references that were more familiar to an English-speaking audience, but ALL OF THEM began with the "ran-" syllable. This is what a localizer is SUPPOSED to do, and not what they did in the '24 dub.

Something I really liked in the Viz releases from the previous decade. I was confused why Ranma-girl-type/Ranma-chan sounded like a Jersey Girl. Then I noticed that boy-type was voiced to resemble Daniel Laruso (the protagonist of Karate Kid). It may not have been intended in Takahashi's original. But to an American audience, it conveys the masculine nature of the character. Even if you don't catch the impression as such.
Yeah, in japanese there are certain ways to speak that come off as more feminine or masculine (like the presented "I" pronoun for example) which would not be possibly translated into english. So one job of localizers is not just to translate but to give off the intentions of the work, which in this case is that ranma talks in a very masculine way. Its sad that not all modern localizers seem to have great intention when it comes to localizing foreign property
I just checked the Norwegian subs in the new version, and THANKFULLY they are PROPERLY translated

I had to look up that scene of Genma chucking Ranma back into the backyard pond a second time in the manga. Apparently, he does say "You sound like a WOMAN! Were you not prepared to give your life for the sake of your training?!"
sailor moon classic got a new dub that was said to be uncensored and yet they still censored and changed lines. even lines that didn't need to be censored. for instance, in sailor moon r Chibiusa is waiting to get picked up from her swim class and while waiting with one of her classmates he starts to cry bc of the rain and thunder. she then says he shouldn't cry bc he is a boy. they changed it in the new dub to something like "don't worry they'll be here soon" in the following season sailor moon s, when the outer guardians attack Hotaru, Chibiusa jumps in the way to protect her from the blast, in the japanese version Usagi says "CHIBIUSA" you know as a mother would do. it was a closeup on her face wi/ little to no mouth flaps and for some reason they changed it in the dub to "Look out!" liiiike what?? Usagi's daughter is about to be murdered and she just says to look out? such a disappointment. I was so looking forward to it. on top of that the actress who plays Usagi can't even say chibiusa's name without sounding like she's choking on the name.

I served in Japan on my mission and have to this day kept up my Japanese as best as I could. I instantly heard the difference in the two languages and what they meant. I could go into a bit more detail than what was presented in this video, but it's not totally necessary. What matters is that the translators were wilfully incorrect and should be held accountable for it.
Woah, Shad speaking Japanese via AI is freaking impressive...like the fact that it doesn't sound like a monotone robo translation like Google Translate or other text-to-speech apps, keeping the intonations. I'm amazed at how far and good AI is getting year by year. I bet you could even use AI to manipulate the video so that the audio also matches the lip movement as well.
This is why I watch fansubs. They don't bastardize anime. And when the anime is available for purchase, I buy it directly from Japan. It costs more, but I'd rather my money go straight to the source than support any of the Western corporations via bunny hopping through their BS distribution, etc.

There's the english subtitle, which remains accurate, and the English (CC) - closed captioning which is supposed ot accurately reflect the dub script. The problem with the localization here is entirely on that dub script.
The german dub is also done by Iyone and interestingly the translations are in line with the original in the first scene. This must be a very american centric localization issue but is certainly not a problem across the entire western world.
The second scene that was criticised here is likely not even cut in the japanese original. The remake is vastly closer to the manga, by both panel and dialogue. In the original, the line Genma added before throwing Ranma into the pond is an anime only fabrication. In the remake it is closer to the manga and was left out since it never happened in the manga either. Genma's comment about Ranma 'sounding like a woman' was done after he threw Ranma into the pond. That was however left out in both the english and german version and replaced with something more generic.
This is not a remake of the original anime, this is a remake that leans insanely close to the manga. I would expect that this time there will be no fillers and things like the order of when Shampoo appears to be correct. Or anime only characters like Sasuke to not exist. And so far this seems to also apply to anime added lines.

Remaking old anime in general rubs me the wrong way. Japanese media's strength is its ability to push out new content. I don't want rehashes of the stuff I got from twenty years ago. I want new content that only the japanese can provide. As for localizers, they have been butchering mockeries since before I was watching in the '80s. That is one profession I will be glad to see buried by AI.
i started watching anime in the 90s my introduction was sailor moon, i was blessed with watching it in the original japanese with english subtitles, we wouldn't get the dubbed version in the UK untill much later. i went to rewatch years later and found a place to watch it dubbed i started a rewatch and it soon became aparrent that the dub was not faithful in places as i remember a few conversation being different in the sub.
so like any curious person (that had half convinced themselves they were mistaken and were mildly loosing their mind) i went and checked the episodes between subs and dubs and to my shock i wasn't going out of my mind the dub was differnt to the sub givng a few conversations an almost completely differnet context so i switched back to the jp voices and en subtitles
since then i have always watched anime with japanese voiceover with as close as possible english subtitles as i can get, there were a few things i watced that i even had to go out and find fansubs for as the "official" subtitles were not faithful at all.
localisers are hired to do one job translate the original text/voiceover into their native language, but some just cant help themselves and have to project their own personal beliefs into it, then they wonder why a lot of jp studiios are looking at AI as an alternitive . . .screaching about loosing their jobs, all i have to say of the is They should have done their job properly.

Got mixed feelings on this. On one hand, AI can do some nasty stuff to help push malicious mistranslations. On the other hand, it can be used to fight against it. If it gets good enough, the voice acting business will get more competitive because it will cut down on the need for multiple voice actors (especially bilingual ones) or can just replace them outright! Just like any tool, this can be used for good or evil.
I did not think it sounded like Shad at all, other than being in the same vocal range.
Shad's voice is characterized by a sort of mellow, fuzzy edging, and the AI missed that entirely.

Been seeing more AI translations in other media and frankly I can't blame them even if I do get a bit annoyed. Overt ideology can ruin good entertainment. You can put a message into entertainment without making it unnatural or cringe.

That is interesting, I'm watching the anime in French, and I find it funny and a bit sad how much some studios, just do not respect or care about the original material. In French, the dub felt more like a nostalgia throwback because they hired the same actors, that they used for the original show, and you feel the French actors and the translation have heart and care and really love or respect the original series and not try to change or try to turn something that isn't in the original show.
Must be a US problem. I'm watching from canada and this scene has the proper translated subs of Ranma saying "who are you calling a girlie"
I'm now thankful that I have grit my teeth and learned Japanese on my own.
My sister and I grew up watching this (and many other) anime. We actually tracked down the original series on dvd after I came across seasons 4 and 5 at a second hand retail store in October. Didn't know about the remake of it till she informed me of it when I spotted the dvd box sets, and still haven't watched it due to weariness from translation changes like you both pointed out. The art style also seems less, more muted for lack of a better term. Thanks to both you (Shadiversity/Knight's watch) and Metatron for your content.

I think you're still being overly harsh on the Japanese side of this production. Your issue with the "joke" when Genma throws Ranma in the pond doesn't EXIST in the original manga. Ranma is sitting silently when Genma just grabs him to throw him in the water to "explain" their situation. I know the recently Sailor Moon remake is DEFINITELY more faithful to the manga, however it also has pacing issues and other problems because of it. Point being, it's certainly fair to like the original release more, but I don't think it's fair to criticize the Japanese side changes as being "woke".

I’m a huge fan of the original Rurouni Kenshin series (until the third season), but I’m also loving the new remake that has gone back to the original manga source. Some of the changes in the first season feel odd, but those were changes that remove the anime-created characters and story beats.
I agree with both of you, as said in another reply comment, one needs to be clear that the manga is the original and what needs to be compared with when talking about adding or removing.
This is why I kept saying a remake of Ranma 1/2 wouldn't work nowadays

The sub vs dub war now has a winner. But anime subtitles on Netflix just suck. I don't know why they refuse to buy better made subtitles. I was watching Kakegurui and the male MC greats the female MC calling her "Jabami-san". She then tells him to call her by her first name and he repeats his greeting by calls her "Yumeko-san" this time. In the subs, he calls her Yumeko the first time (because viewers are apparently too stupid to understand that Japanese people call each other by their last name), then she tells him to use her first name, and he calls her Yumeko AGAIN. Do they even proofread?!

16:00 I was going to say, as someone who has been watching the show English Sub (not the CC version), and as someone who has been on the lookout for this woke crap, I haven't seen anything blatantly woke in the subtitles, much to my relief. Glad I managed to pick the right subs to use.
Also, as a long time fan of Ranma 1/2, despite the changes and cuts that are being done, I still will continue watching the remake. I still find it entertaining, some scenes outright making me laugh or emotional where it should. I understand that it is not the same as the original, and honestly, I don't expect it to be. Not completely. It's just another adaptation of a series I love, and I want to continue supporting the overall series as such.
And despite some of the bad, there is still a lot of good things in this remake too. For example, I like the Japanese VAs they got for the show, Kuno being a surprising favorite with how he speaks. And the action animation is fluid and snappy. And I even like the comedic sound effect texts that show up, surprisingly.
Bottom line, I'm still going to be giving this remake a chance, until something horrendously unforgivable happens. Some woke activists trying to push their agenda on the English side isn't going to drag this down for me.
Hey KnightsWatch: thank you for covering this I think you should ask what Japanese audience thinks about the changes and see if you can warn japan what is happening to the local versions of the shows here in western countries. I think the creators of the original work could possibly force them to change it back to how it was intended? Let us not just whine about it but actually DO something about this. Similar cenroship thing happened with Dragon Quest 3 remake. The creaotr of the DQ series mentioned he is against these changes that were forced upon the western release by the woke mob. I hate these woke activists and wish there was something we can do to punish them for ruining people's work. It is akin to a vandal that is putting graffiti on other people's artwork in a art gallery. It's disgusting! Why can't these people just create their own stories and comics????
Keep making more of these videos. It reminds fans our hobbies are in constant attack. What our goal should be is raise awareness of the problem for the wider topic of free speech. It's NOT ok to change the creator's works like this. What I imagine in future is uncensored editions are made for the fans translated by japan. (sort of like directors cut)) The uncensored versions may even have documentary feature covering the differences of the western version to the original so fans know why it exist. If sales of uncensored edition are high enough over woke tampered version, then it justifies the release of the fixed editions. Since anime is now mainstream today the extra effort is worth it. Younger audiences would not be as familar with older anime so they may not be aware of these subtle woke changes.

This is why you dont watch dubs, ever since day 1 they were censoring and changing shit, you always go with a sub or fansub and, if you are watching in an english speaking country especially america pirate it, and if you want to show support to the mangaka and the team behind the anime/manga buy merch, ive heard it's a much better way to support them than throwing money at netfux or crunchyroll

I had the impression that English fansubs largely went away a decade ago because official translations have appeared for practically every anime at the same time it came out in Japan. Whereas fansubs thrived prior to that when most anime were not being translated to English either at all or not without months or more delays. So before fansubs let people see things in a timely manner, but now they don't, so most of the point of them is gone.
I am so curious about how they will handle Ranma's reasoning for why he is training before he is allowed to go back home to his mother. Ranma's mother will force Ranma to commit seppuku if he cannot become a "man among men." If she finds out that he changes into a girl, it means death for him. How are they going to translate that?
That’s weird because for me when it’s English subtitles and Japanese dialogue Ranma says “Who are you callin a girl” and when it’s English dialogue with subtitles it says “Who says liking clothes is girlie”
Shad was using the closed caption ([CC]) subtitles (a transcription of the English dialogue for the hearing-impaired) instead of the normal English translation subtitles.
We have already seen AI that can make your eyes seem like they are looking at the camera even when you are looking down reading from a notes sheet,
I wonder how long until the AI can not only translate but also match the mouth movements.
I gave up on the remake after episode 3. There was too much cut and it was almost always character development moments. The original is better.
It follows the Manga, nothing was cut if anything the OG anime added stupid filler in thr Episodes with terrible pacing

For someone like myself that does not speak Japanese but respect the language for it's complexity I appreciate Metatron for educating us on what and how the lines were being said. I hope people are sending the creator and the japanese animation company this stuff with the japanese explanation of what's going on with these woke activist sub translations. I think they would do something about it if enough overseas viewers complain. Most don't even know they are getting lied to with the subs. If everyone knew this was going on I think most people would agree this is unacceptable to change the source.
Messing up the translation is espescially scummy, people don't have any choice but to trust the translators and they are taken advantage of. I don't want to watch any more anime on streaming services nor anything translated in the past 10 years.

That's why I torrented the *original* to watch instead in case streaming services suddenly *delist* it to make the remake the *only* legal option. Which's tyrannical bullshit because I absolutely *agree* that this remake (at least if it *is* different from the version available in Japan), is *unnecessary* , & a *bastardization* that only exists to please the non-existent "mOderN aUdiENcE". That's why I *too* am happy that anime studios are getting into AI translation; at least the AI can actually be trusted to do its job *properly* .
& you're absolutely *right* that people of each sex who *haven't* been brainwashed by the woke cult see it as insulting to be told they're being like the *opposite* sex; guys don't like being told they're being like a girl, & vice versa.
