    So, if the water is within parameters you don't need to do a water change. Even if it may be weeks - I'm thinking about stability being better than change.

    • @Saltwateraquariumdotcom
      @Saltwateraquariumdotcom  4 роки тому +2

      If your tank parameter are within range than not doing a water change will be more stable than introducing new water.

    i got a question that i can't really find the answer too anywhere on youtube. Im thinking about buying a 120 gal tank, I'm gonna invest in a RO/DI unit and make my own water but to start and fill a tank do i throw the ro/di water straight into the tank? or get 4 brute barrels and mix it all together? only reason why i ask is because to do a 20/30 gallon change bi weekly or weekly i don't mind getting buckets for now and walk it upstairs from basement, but to do 4 brutes wouldn't i need to buy 4 pumps to mix the water and 4 heaters? - def could use your help on this! thank you

    • @Saltwateraquariumdotcom

    • @SuperMkl2010
      @SuperMkl2010 4 роки тому

      Evan Dckens I had one and I got rid of it, don’t get me wrong it does work but..... it brings a lot of micro bubbles into your tank, it won’t hurt your fish but looks like dirty, it takes two weeks plus to break in, and the air tube is loud, I try to put filter material for the bubbles but didn’t work, when I took it out there were micro bubles going into my tank but not that many, I didn’t like it, my tank is a 30 gallon, I went to my LFS and the guy gave me a coralife bio cube skimmer it works really good, I have a UA-cam video about the coralife filter with skimmer take a look and you will see what am talking about

    Put a ball valve on that hose. Makes it even easier. 15-25% water change periodically. Remember to turn OFF your auto-top off when you are removing water. Remember to turn it on, AFTER the tank is refilled with new fresh saltwater. Try to stick with same salts all the time.

    Hi Mark,
    Great refresher for those of us who have been away from reef tanks for a while.
    Things I'd like to hear you dig into:
    1) What's available in protein skimmers and what you recommend
    2) Kalkwasser dosing and reactors
    3) Systems setup for monitoring level (minimum setup, standard setup and dream setup)
    4) Lighting - anything better than LEDs or is that the only choice these days?
    5) Circulation - how many pumps, wavemaking, gravity fed surges, etc
    6) Thoughts about species (SPS, soft corals, reef fish)
    7) Hidden systems room - setup of the hidden plumbing, best practices, etc
    8) Plenum, live sand, bare bottom? (should be higher on this list)
    9) Long term issues - salt creep, clogged pipes, hardware replacement
    10) Thoughts on a larger setup - tank stands, aquarium types (glass/acrylic), size issues
    Off the top of my head so probably missing some things, but really looking forward to your insights!

    I'm a little confused. Most other people say not to put more salt in when doing a water change because the salt stays in your tank. You say to mix salt water to put back in? could you explain this please? thanks Love the videos by the way!

    • @Saltwateraquariumdotcom
      @Saltwateraquariumdotcom  3 роки тому

      Sure. When doing a water change, you take saltwater out, put saltwater in. When you are topping off because of evaporation you only use fresh RODI water, not saltwater. If you replace evaporated water with salt water your salinity will climb because the salt in your water do not evaporate.

    If I buy premixed saltwater in a gallon could i just add lil by little from gallon, or do you recommend I por into a big bucket and heatt. The have it on sale premixed on tuesday so much easier to buy mixed. Also I have watched youtubes of 10 gallons no skimmer and they thoroughly clean. Every week. Since thats what i have do I clean walls with a magnet and vacuum sand? or does this get rid of my beneficial bacteria. They also blows rocks and corals with a turkey baster. My lfs said salinty can rage for from 10.24 , 25 and 26 and on hydrometer it shows a greater range of 1020 to even 1028 I believe. Mine is at 10.20 I accidentally got it that way and someone said he always aclimates his fish at that level that they do better then gradually ups it. I am going to gradually bring it up to maybe 1.024 I s that okay? I just finished cycling and have one clown, doing well at .20 salinity but just set up last night.

  • @richardnation3379

    Is there a skimmer on budget build, or just filter? I have a 10 gallon tank. I have an aqua clear 30 gallon filter. I also have a 50 gallon, unopened, I was either going to keep as a spare or should i use the 30 gallon as the spare, and use 50? I dont know how much you should over size. I like the smaller size but I can fit more media in the 50, the 20 pumps 150 gpm and the 50 is 200 gpm. Is it necessary to have phosguard in it? I stared cycling with what came with it. a thick sponge and porous bio balls and carbon pack. I should have started with the purigan, and chemi pure elite and a poly filter. The expesive brand one people use. I did put a mix of matrix with my bioballs. I read purigan could slow cycling time. Should I just gradually switch pieces as to not loose my benficial bateria, if thats the case I should definitely use the 50 since it fits more media. But do u think it is necessary to oversize so much? How long should I wait to add a few corals? I have one fish now plan to get another soon the later a cleaner shrimp, can I add a few corals b4 the shrimp since there is a frag fest we are attending in a week from now, would that be to soon?
