Sex for Work: The True Cost of Our Tea - BBC Africa Eye documentary
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лют 2023
- A joint investigation between BBC Africa Eye and Panorama has uncovered widespread sexual abuse on farms which supply some of the UK’s most popular tea brands including PG Tips, Lipton and Sainsbury’s Red Label. Women in Kenya say they’ve been forced into sex by their managers while working on plantations which have been owned for decades by two British companies.

🚨UPDATE 22/02: Police in Kenya have been ordered to open an investigation over allegations of sexual abuse, made in a BBC documentary, at tea plantations which supply some of the biggest British brands. 📖 bbc.in/3XV355e
Glory To God, let's hope justice will prevail & these monster be given lengthy jail terms because they have destroyed so many lives
Real struggle
I bet you, nothing will be done!! the country's leadership runs on sexism, non performing good looking young women get appointments at the expense of professionals. Impunity runs Kenya. Former Migori governor Obado has been accused of Murder and rape and still enjoys close relations with the president, ( possible candidate for civil service appointment), Kiambu governor was accused of raping, impregnating his teenager househelp and refusing to provide adequate help for the child, current agriculture minister has open rape cases. There have been numerous cases among the police raping and even killing women in jail cells.
Wat about corruption in kenya!
Soo sad
Thank you so much Tom Odula for bringing this to light. Thank you!!!

Decades of sexual abuse and we still haven't boycotted these companies? It has taken me over 4 months to fully watch this and it's heart-wrenching in every way. Can BBC do a follow-up of what happened after this expose, we cannot just let such stories die. All women who have suffered under these sexual goons need justice
Right ? Has anything changed for the women
This is so awful
Can you imagine he remained as the Director like nothing happened and was even re-elected. But there's hope, He was stopped from assuming Office by the High Court last week.
The pain of being infected with HIV and being sexually compelled is so deep that some of those victims cant heal. Some people are so cruel but as long as there are bad people also there are good hearted people ,that is what give me hope.
As a Kenyan, the fact that it took BBC, and not a local media house, to uncover this is as insulting as it is disappointing. These sex pests should spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
Kenyan media houses do the same to their workers too.
It is also disappointing that it has been given almost zero exposure in the UK. This should be shown prime time on BBC, instead they show Strictly Come Dancing.
The sex pests are likely related to or connected in some ways to some people in our local media. So such stories cannot be done locally.
Why dont they just be sentense to death.... Shame on you,,, tumbo kubwa kubwa tu ndo wanajua .... ##justiceforteaworkers
media houses are common puppets for manipulation
This disgusts me. The fact that NO ONE in that company is willing to stop this abuse instead putting it on the VICTIM to stop it!! Unbelievable! All of the leads and managers need to be fired!!! Kate you are so brave. You are an amazing woman.
This makes me sick to my stomach. Now where is the feminism movement?
The feminism movement here in USA is more focused on emasculated men, and turn little boy to girlie boy. While there're women suffering around the world.

Oh stop it. Even Oprah could not keep the students from being sexually abused in her school. Let hear you blame her too.
Our world is beyond discombobulated, but we're supposed to bow down and praise tho God who created such problems
What do you think can be done. To end this. A campaign should start.
Katie has massive courage and determination. Fair play to her for ploughing ahead to get the evidence.
I live in America and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been sexually harassed at work. It’s disgusting and it makes you feel dirty. Luckily, I was able to quit my job and move to another job. These women do not have a choice because that is the only job there is there in their village and they have children. It’s heartbreaking 💔.
Africa needs to have their own ME TOO movement and name and shame these men in public.
I don’t drink tea but if I did I would definitely boycott.
naming and shaming doesn't do anything.
in fact for a victim to believe its emotionally equivalent is heart breaking to think the most damning thing about being assaulted was the social shame.
They need to be jailed, not just shamed!

My own mother went through this in the 1970s in Hawaii. She got a job cleaning hotel rooms which is considered a very good job, but the manager changed the requirement for the job that she must have sex with him, so she quit. She eventually found another job that didn't have such requirements.

It's a problem within their culture, that's unfortunately a fact

I Hope that an organisation will step forward and sue the company. For all those who’ve got AIDS from them and who’ve been harassed and abused and that they have to pay compensation

They don't protect women at all. They will say they will follow up forever.
The director should fires all managers and employ new team of managers especially those professionals who have work as seasonal at tea estates and not been confirmed permanent and have qualification to run the sector instead of appoint unqualified personnel whom they end up forgetting the actual business and running up misusing the resources and embarking nepotism and conflict of interest or harassment.

I feel your pain. You are my heroines! And may God bless you and show your children a better a world where no one see them as a sex object 🙏
It’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear these women tell their stories. Permanent injury, HIV, work constantly being used to essentially force them to have sex with their supervisors…and the companies who employ them trying to cover their asses while saying it’s not the huge problem that it is. CEOs and other execs and shareholders that don’t give a damn what women on the other side of the world go through, so long as they can make more profits. Shame on all of them, shame on the ones that weren’t investigated in this video, but likely have the same rampant abuse. Shame on companies that don’t care who suffers, so long as they are bringing in more and more profit.
I feel for the men in this video too. They suffer the same painful injuries as the women from working in the fields, and they get tossed aside, made redundant, with no warning in a place with little other jobs available. Profit at the cost of human dignity and lives, that’s what these multinational corporations are all about, and the suffering have no recourse when these people can pay their way out of anything. Until the entire world starts caring more about what happens behind the products they buy, caring about the working conditions for everyone regardless of where they are and what their work is, I’m afraid it won’t change. I really hope a lot of people see this and start demanding action be taken against companies and people like this.
It takes two to tango, it's hard time for the black man to take responsibility of his actions and look after his children.

This is really so painful to swallow,.Kenyan government should take immediate action for the compensation of this innocent workers and the whole management boards brought to books for negligence if the workers and their working conditions and ignorance to their greivances
This is Shocking the sexual harassment these poor women have to endure 💯 Those predators should be bought to Justice I've just boycotted buying Kenya & Lipton's & PG tips this was such a eye-opener for me From New Zealand Praying that things will get better for the woman 💯🙏💕💀
I am still shaken by the fact that some of the managers have been working for 26 years!! Can you imagine 26 years of this atrocities on women? This screams a death bed every time you see tea plantations in Kericho.
Hey how are you doing today…?
When she said she's HIV positive n she lost her marriage..it really broke me
This is disgusting. ... Unfortunately it's happening across several industries in Kenya 🇰🇪.Its sad how people with influence take advantage of poor job seekers!
Thank you for unravelling this ill , I pray that our Kenya prosecution team will take this and use it to bring down this villains
Sometimes it's hard to watch these documentaries because of the brutal truth and evil acts amongst us. But these women are so powerful and courageous. It's not easy to relive constant abuse. Thank you to everyone who brought this to light. I hope the predators are punished to the fullest extent to cause such inhumane pain and hardships.
I've deliberately made my mind to never take any Unilever tea again. It's a noble decision
Me too
That is not very clever, in the long run, you will hurt poor because they depend on those jobs and income.
Ull take it in a htl
Me too
Nooo....we will loose our livelyhood not all are evil
Awesome investigative work Tom. Thank you for exposing these predators, the exploitation of these innocent women workers & girls in Kenya and the multinational tea companies turning a blind eye to the plight of these victims. Hitting the multinationals where it hurts means their bottom line profits #boycottunilever #boycottpgtips #boycottfinlays and yes bring the class action against them for these crimes committed on their watch.
This guy Chebochok was elected director of this Tea zone a few days ago😭😭 he was elected by the farmers. Of course he threatened to fire them if they didn't vote him in. My heart is bleeding for the poor women
My heart bleeds as a father to daughters and a husband. It's disheartening the levels of desperation and mental torture that these managers put the women through just to exploit them sexually in exchange for a job and renewal of contracts. I can imagine the women's anxiety. These predators should face jail time.
I remember another documentary of the same nature. The women were lure into sex trafficking in another country Italy. Many women got pregnant and their children were taken from them. The Europeans were behinds the scenes using the black men and women to lure them in. It is black peoples being used to bemuse The Europeans as well in America take advantage of peoples of colors, Historically.
@Stuart MacPherson France has less than 1% convictions on rape accusations. It is a pandemic, sexual assault. Gang rape has it's own special name in France, tournantes. Look up Samira Bellil - a real martyr. The truth is the world is uncivilized. Human trafficking takes place in every "civilized" country. Women and children disappear everyday in the West. There are few if any countries that are exceptions, and none of those are in "The West". I highly doubt any country is without it. You are using circular logic. Taking responsibility for themselves would involve killing/castrating their attackers - and then they would be put in jail for assault or murder and not believed about being sexually assaulted. The U.S. has decent laws about self-defense but you aren't allowed to have guns in much of Europe. Force multipliers are the real answer, but only if they are allowed to take action without ruining their lives even further. The circle of silence is the biggest issue: not being believed. This is also compounded by the issue of false accusations, especially by women in the West. So it takes a court case for each situation. "Gang grooming" is very common in Europe, sadly.
@Stuart MacPherson France has an accountability issue, and you clearly have a racist issue.
@Stuart MacPherson You just blatantly supported racial segregation and have the gall to blame people from other countries and act like no Frenchman (or woman) has ever committed rape, that rape doesn't exist in Europe on it's own. Your logic is non-existent, and you are projecting your racism onto me. Get a brain, nimrod.
@Stuart MacPherson yes the civilised Europe where child predators are ministers and work in the government. Really acting as if there isn't endemic se#ual harassment and r@pe in Europe. How naive are just that in Europe those ceo. Execs, principals have money to cover up. Alps the issue of sex tourism where by the lovely European gentleman pay to se#ually exploit children in other countries during holidays. Then go back home to their wives and children. Go also look at the amount of normalised se#ual violence in relationships even just in the UK. Predators are not based in one nation or even in one class they are everywhere. In churches, schools. Board rooms, universities etc.
I was on attachment in one of the flower farms in Thika 8 years ago. My supervisor was a man. At that time I didn't understand why he told me never to go to any department by myself, and that I should always notify him in which greenhouse I was. But he probably saved me from a lot of trouble. One time I was excited to drive the truck carrying waste material, I forgot to say where I was going. With me, there were 2 guys, and the dumping area was a bit bushy .on coming back, he asked me where I was, who I was with and if anything had happened..me I was just excitedly telling him how I drove the truck ..the look on his face only relaxed when I said nothing had happened....I was lucky, but maybe someone else wasn't
Thank God for him
@@shirleytatha8189 not too fast 😂. They are probably related or he was returning a favor to his benefactor by protecting her.
@@africanglobalnomad no we are not related..he was just a good person
@@africanglobalnomad there are still good men out here it's quite sad that evil is too normalised that the only thought you had is its a compensated favour,do good and expect nothing in return, that mentality is the same that the perpetrators have
John Chebochok one of the sexual predators captured in this documentary preying on women looking for employment just won the Seat for Director, Ainamoi Zone.
My heart is heavy, really heavy.
How is this guy still in office, actually got a higher level
This documentary MUST be seen by the entire wold! I drink Lipton and I had no idea! I feel dirty knowing something in my cupboard has caused so much pain!
Hello how are you doing.?
Learn British colonial rule: plantations tea is sitting on was forcefully taken by British. Owners murdered, maimed and evicted. Never compensated to date.

I know this is sad and disgusting to watch
Can't look at my tea the same way, am in Kuwait, Lipton has been my favorite brand and love to hangout at Starbucks after work and weekends
Good to know that these multinational companies operate still knowing about these atrocities. Thank you for exploiting these monsters
This happens right here in the USA too!
When you are young with no education, you are desperate to find a good paying job...
Specially when they think no one will find out about the advances they make to a young woman!
It is sad!
Tom Odula always does a very good job!
My heart broke for the 14 year old who was sexually assaulted and no action was taken 💔😭😭 this is really sickening 😭
What kind of 'men ' are these??
@@sam-fc9ky Worse than Animals.
Sam they are not men sexual predators. I am glad she told her truth.Lipton company need to step up and fire him .Hope she heal from her trauma.🙏
I cringed watching how desperate that Chebochok guy was acting. I am sorry about what that undercover girl had to go through to bring this to light. I am heartbroken for our mothers and sisters. Justice needs to prevail. We need safe working conditions 😢. Indeed, nothing stays hidden forever. Thanks you Tom and BBC.
Oh my it is a real shame to know that a woman looking an honest job and yet go through such abuse
i felt into tears after seeing this. i am raised in tea plantation, and if this is what our parents are going through to raise our school fees, it encourage me to work smart in order to take them out from that hell.
Godspeed brother. You and all of you there.
@@imranzaki3687 thank you,,
Mr Jeremiah has a big job and big house but he's not satisfied. Evil man
I stopped buying Lipton tea years ago for other reasons, but this just proves it to me that i made the right desicion. That last "interview" at the hotel was absolutely horrific. Something needs to change.
I hope the people who ignored those women and the ones who abused them now see their faces on a documentary that people have seen around the world.
Good job Tom, Kate and the entire team. This has to end, my heart goes out to all those women.
As a Kenyan 💔🥺am heartbroken
And guess who owns the tea plantations in Kenya....none other than the British, yet here we have BBC playing good cop bad cop...they even got a Kenyan to do it for them. It is sad that Kenyans can not figure out that their independence does not exist. Without economic and financial independence you Kenyans will continued to be owned by Europeans. Forget about your politicians, they are bought and paid for.
Sipping my home land tea in the cost of people who don’t deserve such treatment not coool
