    When I put it in drive it delay and bang and when it finally drive it says on first gear and would not shift from first gear at all but when I change the gear module it work fine for like a month and all off a sudden the same problem started again i am not a mechanic so when the problem first started I took it to transmission shop but the guys there couldn't find any code and couldn't figure out the issue. After an extensive research that when I luckily found your video so true your systematic explanation I was proudly able to get a used gear module from the junkyard for $40 and replaced it myself through watching your video took me like 2hours but I actually got it to work fine and I was even using the manual selector after a month of working fine it started the same exact issue. Now am thinking I might have to get another module seen I got this one from the junk yard but being that the is pretty old with 235000 mile 2000 e320 I don't if it wise to spend money on it not knowing if It worth it? I also have to refill the engine oil like every two months not the reason for that either and if it the conductor plate how expensive do you think fixing it might as I think that might be too much of a work to tackle by myself? I am extremely thankful for help

    ty sooooooo much i just bought a e320 and sure enough stopped shifting.....when i took the transmission control module out of its place it was in a pool of oil......i never thought oil would travel up wires get to electrical components.........ive learned alot from ur video sadly in my case both had to be replaced the recognition switch in the shifter and the module but saved me alot of hair pulling lol so thanks for my car and for me still having my hair

      Gary i had a little gold glitter. Wen i took the pan off. And black trans mishion flluid i put a used conductor plate and changed the end cyilanods. Im gona get. A shifter today. 909 496 5574 text me if u can yup it wasent. Shifting. Yea i had a. Grey. And gold. In the pan once i looked. Under the black trans fluid.

    I have the same exact car and I ran into the same problem. I replaced the electrical conductor plate and still same problem. The only thing I haven't replaced is my shifter. It looks like that will solve my problem! Thank you for confirming that for me! I was going nuts for about a year now trying to figure out my problem.

      +Frank Roveccio Im assuming that reverse is ok,trans is full of fluid. Any codes in the trans? Have you checked the trans computer for oil intrusion? Has any water or maybe coffe spilled into the shifter? Gary Thanks for watching

      Yes, reverse works great. I replaced the electrical conductor plate and when I did that I replaced all the fluid, filter and the plug that goes into the Trans. So my Trans works great but when it's cold I get that problem. Like around 50° and colder. And you can tell it's an electrical problem when at night the D for drive doesn't light up but when I shake the shifter knob it will then light up. That's when it starts to work only when it's lit. I've looked into everything else and the only thing I didn't do was replace the shifter assembly. It was just nice to see I wasn't the only person with that problem. For a while everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I told them what was going on lol.

      +Frank Roveccio What you may want to do is access the shifter assembly and check and clean the connections see if that works, the only reason i say that is a new assembly is 500-600 dollars. Next question when i does go into gear does it shift right away, the one i had, had no shift out of first until it warmed up alittle. Gary

      That's a good point. It can't hurt to try to clean it. For my car it didn't matter if the car was warmed up if it was cold outside it would act up and not shift out of first. But once I'm able to get it into drive it shifts beautiful.

      Hello William, sorry about that, on this model Mercedes, the TCM was right under the hood and there are four wires for the range switch, I think like terminals 22 to 26, Do you need wiring info for a Mercedes? if so, I can pull a diagram for you

    Thanks for your video, it is a reallllly awesome demonstration!
    I just bought a 02 C320. The car was a no start issue (was driving fine), I found out that the EIS module is bad, It cannot send signal to starter S terminal. As soon as I send juice through starter fuse, th car runs great.
    But here are two questions about transmission.
    One is the car struck in Park. Personally, I think it might be wrong with the mechanical linkage in Gear Selector Leveler, the dash shows blank gear in the meantime. I put the car in drive by using a screwdriver to push the release button, the car runs, but NO shift.
    Second is no communication with TCM. I plug in the Matco scan tool ( it might don't have a good support with EU cars), I can only read Engine code (shows some wired codes, like No communication with Electronic selector lever module, No communication from N15/3 ETC control unit, Rough road detection) , no communication with transmission, ESC... all about no communication with chassis system.
    May I know is it a bad Gear Selector leveler caused so many problems? Is this part act like a gateway in CAN communication? If the information is missing, the whole transmission will lose communication?
    Please give me a clue, thanks!

      Have you tried unplugging the trans connector to see if the car starts, this is a test. The Gear selector is not a gateway, trans should communicate. Have you looked at the tcm, the oil works it way up the wires into the TCM and may short it out

      The connector that plugs right into the trans, right front of the trans, there are 6 pan bolts, rightside of the trans, top right pan bolt, the connector is above that, there may be a plate covering the connector, as a test just unplug the connector and see if the car starts

      Gary Ferraro Ther person who sold it to me told me it was diagnosed with a bad transmission control module. They drained all the fluids and it's set for a while so it has a dead battery. I need to throw the new battery in and see what codes I get. I'll play with it a little bit this weekend and get my scan tool on it.

      Gary Ferraro hey Gary I have a 2002 E320 base model. Code P0730. Whines when I drive them goes out of gear. Cut it off an back on a and it's fine again for a few minutes.

    Great video! today on the way home My 2003 C240 would not down shift or shift at all! When leaving a light I would have to floor it so it would move. When I went to put it in park I had to shut the car off. I found a used shifter control but I'm not 100% thats the problem? Any suggestions? Thank you

      Code was P304 Misfire cylinder #4 would this do anything to the shifting? I took the plastic off so i can unplug the shifting module and it shifted fine for a few stop lights. Then it would not shift. I unplugged and plugged back in and it would work for awhile?

    Hi let me first say thanks for the video was extremely helpful however after I replaced it from a part that I got from the junk yard it drove fine for like a month and the same problem started again I do live Massachusetts very cold here not Shore what is causing the issue and also the car sucking so much oil it a 2000 e320 with 235000 mile any input from you will be greatly appreciated thanks

      Does it have a delay in drive? or not shifting from first? Have you had the car scanned for codes? The conductor plates go bad alot on these cars

    could you use a scan tool at all with 1999 to talk with the electronic gear selector, I know in 2000 they got rid of the range sensor and went to CAN communication, but could you have got any live data with scan tool beside gear of course on this car

    Hey Gary I have a problem and I need ur help 1st the problem I had was is sometimes my transmission will stuck on any gear when I drive it then I have turn the car off and turn it on for it to go back normal I searched a lot on the internet most people said is the conductor plate now I changed the conductor plate and the connecter wire goes into the conductor plate and now it’s not shifting out of the first gear I can go into p and N D fine but it won’t shift up I pulled the tcm Nd it was full of oil I cleaned it Nd drain the oil out of it Nd still not shifting help me blz

      I scanned it those codes came out p0753,p0758,p0763,p00743,p0715 but I have checked the solenoids resident and all of them was good

    3:25 .. I can never tell the difference between ravens and crows. I'm thinking those are crows. Anyone? Anyways .. great vid. I just bought a CLK320 and when I try to accelerate too quickly, it seems to lose power .. like it goes into neutral or something. Sometimes I can verrrry sloooowly accelerate to a higher speed so I can pull over, and sometimes I lose all forward motion altogether. I then have to turn my hazard lights on, stop the car, put it in park, and restart the car. This sometimes gets me a few more miles, sometimes it gives out again right away. Any ideas? I got a great deal on the car (I think) .. engine when running sounds great. Body and paint is perfect .. interior needs minor work but overall excellent.

      I think at that time i was able to purchase just that but i honestly do not remember, i believe the recognition switch was bad or a connection problem

    hi there, I have a 99 ML320. same innards more or less and have same issue with not getting out of first or second when cold out. I have narrowed it down to a bad shifter. My shifter, the selected gear illuminates when the headlights are turned on. I found "D" drive would not illuminate unless i applied a little pressure to the shifter. slightly pushing up or pulling back on the shifter. a little nudge on the shifter, "D" lights up, and drives as should/ expected.

      Do you have a scanner, sometimes you can scan the shift module(which is the shifter itself). Did anyone spill anything in that area like coffee or tea?

      I do have an OBD2 scanner, but it wont do a fancy scan like that. No CEL so it doesnt pick anything up. Took it to a shop with a fancy scanner and they reported no logged codes or issues. No spills I know of. Thanks for the reply.

      I had no codes either, at this point you may have to locate the tcm and pin out the 4 wires like i did on the video to confirm shifter is bad. I had a couple of bad shifters where none of the lights illuminated, also sometimes the shifter wouldnt go past neutral unless i turned car off. Gary

    I have a 2002 ML320 Mercedes SUV. My issue is a hard shift coming to a stop when it goes into first gear. Could it be the same problem you had? I have reset the transmission quite a few times and it seems to help but for not very long.

      If you reset and goes back to same way there is something going on internal. Would you say it's a harsh 2-1 downshift? Do you have winter mode? just wondering if you get same problem in winter mode

    I have a 97 E320 and the car is stuck on the second although I’ve changed the transmission and the transmission computer and the problem hasn’t been fixed but I still didn’t change the trans shifter yet and the trans oil is perfect. What do you think might be the problem ? Please help me

      Any chance of having the car scanned, this may give direction, there may be a code present if the car is in failsafe

    I have 99 E320 that won't shift out of 1st gear. I ran the checks you showed and the gear shifter passed. Van you tell me what to check next the people that checked the car could not get their scanners to read the car. so I need a manualnway yo continue to check if the transmission is bad. Could you share that I would think you would go to the transmission plug and check there but I don't know. please help I don't want to buy a trans and still have the problem. Ricardo.

      Not shifting out of first may be an electrical issue, could be a conductor plate. How is the fluid level? You really need to get it scanned, because even if you find and fix the problem, until the codes are cleared the trans may not shift. Where are you located?

      Also it too far to drive it stuck in 1st gear. The local shop claims I need a trans but they have no scanner to check it. I don't mind replacing it but I want to be sure. Are you saying if i replace it I still have to have a scanner to clear it.

      yes, even if you replace the conductor plate, without clearing the code it still wont shift, any other shops that can scan the car, even if its not a transmission shop?

    Hi Gary. What causes a 2 sec. delay in drive and a 3 to 4 sec delay in reverse? The transmission is a Mercedes 722.6. Did change its oil and it did reduce the number of seconds delay. Putting it to drive there is a harsh thud but when I step on the brake while shifting it to drive no hard thud(shift). I need your input on this case. Thank you

      oh yes by the way it has arrived from Ebay. I immediately measured the trans oil and my God, the former owner sure didn't know anything of how to fill up a transmission. It was way over filled. Immediately I drained the old oil, and I was surprised I think it wasn't even an ATF!!!! It didn't smell anything like ATF. I think it was more of an engine oil!!! Any way I filled her up with fresh ATF to the right amount and the improvement on shift was noticeable. The reverse took about 5 to 8 second delay now it was about 3 secs. Shift to drive the harshness is still there though and a delay of 2 second. I think it could still be imporoved because I didn't drain the torque converter of its oil. So I will do a second oil change. But Gary my question what other factors that would cause delays in shift? Solenoids? Piston valves? Thanks

      +EndofUSA Theres nothing common thats applied in foward and reverse on this trans. when you changed the oil, did you change the filter too? In drive the B2 clutch is applied and in reverse the B3 clutch is applied. When the car heats up does it still delay?

      +Gary Ferraro thank for your reply. Well I didn't change the oil in the torque converter and didn't change the filter yet. As I was able to start her up she runs but the 3 sec delay in reverse is still there, and the 2 sec delay in drive. There was an improvement when I partly changed the oil. used to be around 8 sec delay in reverse, now only 3 sec delay. But the shift in drive is still a 2 sec. delay. Both delays are there even when the operating temp had already been reached. Drove her for an hour the delays are still there. There are times if I don't step on the brake and simply shift to drive, the shift is hard resulting into a jerk and a thud!!! Any adive you can still give would be a big help!!! Thank you.

      +EndofUSA I would go by way of filter first, see how that goes, being the fact that it got better after an oil change, go with a filter from the dealer(there not that much) at this point i would say either a filter or possible valvebody issue, of course go with the filter first.

    Mine is a Mercedes E240 W211 Chassis M112 engine with the 722.6 gearbox. My car most days when shifting from gear 1 to 2 shifts too hard and at times i am driving at 100km/h and still on gear one when I stop pressing the accelerator the car still raves like am pressing the accelerator..kindly help as I have changed the valve body and the circuit kit 3 times now....the codes am getting are usually stored faults but the car still has an issue shifting from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 1 not forgetting the raving noise it produces

      Description- The signal component Y3/6B1(Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor) And (or) Y3/6S1 (Starter Lockout Contact) Is Implausible
      STATE-STORED
      .....Those are the 2 errors that I keep getting and their state is usually stored, not current and stored,mark you I have changed the valve body and circuit kit 2 times now

    I've got a 95 s420 that won't upshift UNLESS I lift off the gas completely . Can you shed some light on this ?

      This should be a 722.3 trans. This trans has a vacuum modulator and a cable, make sure the cable is hooked up and make sure the vacuum hose did not come off the modulator

    At your first attempt, the temperature of engine coolant was low and therefore no shift. At your second attempt temperature was 80 degree, so it shifts.

      This wouldn't even go into drive right away ether, not the temperature that was ok

      Tcm is small, not many wires, i had my meter to a good ground and on terminals 25,26,27,28

    I've got a 05 ML500 that is stuck in 1st gear. Sunroof left open during rain...mechanic said code says shifter module. Any tips or next step?

      The shifter module is the shifter assembly, that may have to be changed, pretty common. A lot of people spill there drinks and shorts it out

      Used one should work, no programming needed, there are different ones, you may need to give your vin number to get the correct one

    I got a 98 e320. Only has first and reverse. Shifts hard in yo reverse and 1st. Changed shifter didn't fix it any idea?

      Gary Ferraro no stuck just has first and reverse. And. A tranny shop in town said it was shifter so I changed it but still no fix

    When it first started I took to the transmission shop and they found no codes and yes it does have a delay on drive. I haven't look it to the conductor plate yet

    Most of the time it is the plate not the sensors on a Mercedes. You have to program the conductor plate, you get from a junk yard. But you have to wipe the old vin number from the plate.

      +Gary Ferraro Lately I have had issues with the transmission not shifting properly (most noticeable when cold, colder weather). When cold, I reverse from the garage with no issues, but then when I put it into drive it takes several seconds (and sometimes longer) for the tranmission to go into 1st gear (in the mean time if I hit the accelerator, it's like the car is in neutral even though it is in drive). This issue is worse when cold weather outside. When the car warms up and drives for a while the problem goes away. Does the car need transmission fluid? How do you add transmission fluid to this car? It doesn't even have a dip stick! Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated.

      Hook your scan tool up to the ALDL connector, usually under drivers side dash, may be a cover that you have to pull down

    That seems like a very poor design to allow oil to travel by osmosis up the wires and damaged the module. Where is the vaunted German engineering on this?

      You need to replace o-rings on electric connector, then no oil on wires. Germans are ok.
