    This video is a bit like comparing a Rolex to a Casio watch. Two very different products that are purposely built very differently, with the reviewer clearly being a Rolex fan.

    Pebble is limited on iPhone because it is restricted by Apple. This is obviously because Apple wants to sell its Apple Watch. Can't blame them for that, but your comments about how Apple Watch shines in comparison to the Pebble Time Steel When it comes to notifications is a bit unfair considering the restrictions. If you use the Pebble Time on an Android device you will find that there are way more options there. Also, you mentioned in your video that there is not much you can do with the Pebble to respond to messages other than voice. That is actually incorrect Voice commands only work on Android as Apple doesn't allow for it when the Pebble Time is used with iPhone. Also, you didn't point out that Pebble has a much richer eco system and larger number of Apps available than Apple Watch. With that said, I don't own an iPhone but if I did, I probably wouldn't go with Pebble Time it just has so much more options with Android or even BlackBerry or Windows Phones, through third party apps than it does with iPhone.

    • @OneyOzFest182
      @OneyOzFest182 8 років тому +5

      +George Cuervos Agreed. While what +TechDaily said is true, it's still unfair how they worded it. They should be honest and say Apple is restricting Pebble from having notification replies.

    • @TechDaily
      @TechDaily  8 років тому +4

      George Cuervos While it is true that if you use the Pebble with an Android device you will have a much better experience, I wasn't comparing the Pebble Time to an Android Smartwatch on an Android phone. It was a comparison of material, how it functions and how it feels on iOS vs the Apple Watch. If this were a comparison to a Galaxy G or Moto 360 on an Android device, it would certainly be more fair and I could go a lot more in depth. Its just a tough comparison because the Apple Watch is /made/ for IOS and iPhone, while the Pebble just trying to be as relevant as possible given the restrictions.

    • @TechDaily
      @TechDaily  8 років тому +4

      OneyOzFest182 I tried to be as objective as possible in the comparison and just say facts, its hard for me to say "it is this way because Apple is purposely restricting use" because that leads to another whole debate. While it is unfair that Apple may be limiting the Pebble's use, it isn't necessarily unfair for me to say that this feature is missing or lacking in comparison to something else, its just how it is.

    • @geo4525
      @geo4525 8 років тому +12

      Fair enough. I'm not trying to discredit your comparison just noting that some of the shortcomings you mentioned about the Pebble Time have nothing to do with the watch itself but with the restrictions imposed by Apple. A simple mention of that would have made your review more informative. And I'll tell you why, for the uninformed consumer it appears as though the Pebble lacks all these options, it's never clarified that this is only true with iPhone. Nevertheless, I thought it was a good review. Look forward to seeing some more.

      George Cuervos Thanks a lot, and honestly I really appreciate your feedback. It will help with future comparisons for sure. I can't help but think the pebble is a much more a actual watch than the apple watch.
    Less is more.
    I have both right now and i wear both and yes I get weird looks but I really do love the simplicity of the pebble.
    The apple watch feels more like a complicated tech gadget with elements of expensive luxury feel you would get from like a Rolex. So if your already in the market to spend a thousand dollars on a watch why not consider the apple watch.

    Pebble all the way! Pebble is compatible with all of the apps you could want. I like it because it is SIMPLE! All I want in a smart watch is text, call, and email notifications. Pebble does that. If you want twitter, stuff like that, it can do that too. Also, the fact that the Pebble starts at $150 less than Apple is great. Not to mention the fact that Pebble has FIVE YEARS on Apple in terms of watches. Since this is Apple's first watch, it is bound to have problems. The best part is that Pebble's battery lasts a good six days and the Apple lasts a day if your lucky.

    I'm an ASUS Zenwatch owner waiting on a Pebble Time Steel at the moment. The main reasons I'm excited about it are that it seems like a smart watch that actually works like a watch. Between the longer battery life, always on full detail screen, lack of touch screen functionality (i.e. less annoying accidental activations), and a screen that is more easily readable in daylight with a backlight for low light conditions it's easy to see why. I don't really use any but the passive apps on the thing anyway so the more flexible controls that a touch screen offers do little for me too.
    I'm sure for some power users, the Pebble Time Steel is way too restrictive, but for my desires and needs it seems like it will do just fine. That being said, I am very much bemoaning the loss of my Google Now access, but all in all I think it is a fair trade.

    • @woogywips
      @woogywips 8 років тому +2

      Carl Zune Absolutely! Hasn't happened to me once so far and I've had it for over a month now. With my Zenwatch, it happened multiple times a day usually and I had to always be mindful of it. Don't forget, regular wrist watches have been using buttons (some of them far bigger and more protruding) in all three of those places for decades without major complaints that I'm aware of.
      At this point, I'm thrilled with my watch and am much, much happier with physical buttons even with the monumental loss of control versatility.

    As a pebble fan, it's funny to hear you mention the pebble software as not up to standards and then mention all the things that are missing from the apple watch without saying that those are all on the pebble. Also the simple but effective software is a consequence of the battery life which is a better compromise than a touch screen the size of a finger tip that doesn't last 24 hours..

    I have a pebble steel and my coworker has an apple watch. Both of us have had them for more than a year now.
    Well, I swim in the bay with mine several times a week, take it in the shower, the sauna, the hot-tub. In fact I don't even take it off to charge, I just slap the charger to the side of the watch for 30 minutes while I'm working once or twice a week. He has to take his off and charge it every night.
    He goes on endlessly about all his apps, but he never uses them. Really, it's just the glance down to see emails or texts coming in. Maybe a calendar alert now and then.
    What you really really need to think about is "It is a watch. If it weren't a smart watch, what would I look for in a watch?". Accuracy, Durability, Battery Life, Visibility, and Attractiveness.". Then you'd add whatever features you could so your phone would spend as much time in your pocket as possible.
    (and remember, batteries just get worse and worse over time. for those of you who charge your phone twice a day, think carefully about the apple watch)
    I'll always have a smart watch, but I'll always make sure that it has a long battery, a good visibility, pretty tough and waterproof before I start comparing the number of apps or how pretty the animation is.

    At first glance I was confused which device to buy but when I knew about the battery life, I never considered Apple Watch again. All I want is to receive notification, know time and have the basic smartwatch stuff. The 8-10 day battery life of Pebble Steel is a huge turn on. The overall function of the watch outweighs its cons by a lot.

    • @YourConsole
      @YourConsole 8 років тому +4

      +Vacuumer100 sure, but the pebble time steel is waterproof to 30 meters. 30 meters. You may be able to survive a splash on your apple watch, but you can leave your pebble on when you shower, or even go scuba diving with it.

    • @carlzune6626
      @carlzune6626 8 років тому +3

      +Travis Johnson You can shower too with apple watch... and scuba diving really? Because if you happen to go scuba diving you just don't use any watch at all, there are special devices built in the straps of the neoprene equipment who shows more than the hour.
      Is silly to imagine this extreme sport stuff and any kind of average device(smartphone, tablet, laptop, smartwatch).

    • @YourConsole
      @YourConsole 8 років тому +1

      It's not a practical example, I'm making a point. I go swimming with my pebble, and do the dishes, and perhaps *you* say you can shower with an apple watch, but the rating it's given says you shouldn't.
      I generally avoid using my expensive toys in manners their creators specifically say you shouldn't. Perhaps you don't. I know two people with the apple watch, and I've already seen three lost to water damage. And no, I didn't screw up those numbers.

    • @carlzune6626
      @carlzune6626 8 років тому +4

      Do you know that actually apple recommends you, when you spill some sticky liquids accidentally in the watch and the crown gets stuck, to rinse it with tap water without any trouble right?
      Maybe apple isn't recommending to go scuba diving with it, but it says that the watch is water resistant...

    My first smartwatch was the original Pebble then I bought the Sony SW3 (the one with built in GPS and lots of features). As good as the Sony watch is, I still wore the Pebble more due to battery life and not feeling an urge to play with a smartwatch the way one does with a smart phone. I just need notifications and varied watchfaces, a few apps here and there on my smartwatch. I recenty purchased the Pebble Time Steel with stainless steel watch band. For me this is the best thing ever due to the battery life (usually lasts me 9 day) and great looks with a metal band (forget the ugly one used in this review!). I've seen and played with the Apple watch but I feel most people are better off with a Pebble Time Steel.

    I live in canada, so I don’t really recognize the prices that well, but I know from memory that the pebble time round (I’m planning on getting it really soon) is around $230 at the bottom if you buy it on the website, while the apple watch starts at $630. You don’t need that much in a smart watch, and pebble seems to have all you need. I like apple, but it’s just expensive. Also, could anybody give me suggestions for faces/apps on the pebble time round? I’m gonna get the flame red one for my iphone.

    Pebble is what a smart watch should be in my opinion. Just a quicker way to your notifications so you can spend less time pulling out your phone to look at them. Most importantly your watch should still display time, all the time! FOr me, pebble time has it all, I can respond to messages, I can see my notifications, reminders, I can control my music through it, use navigation and a few other features. Smart watch shouldn't replace your phone, I mean have you ever tried to play with your smart watch for more than 5 minutes? Your whole arm will begin to cramp up because it is in an uncomfortable position. This is IMO where apple and other smartwatches fail, they try to replace your phone with a watch, which is stupid. Why limit yourself to an 1x1inch screen and an uncomfortable position of your hand when you can just use your phone? Also having to charge my phone every night would suck, with Pebble Time Steel I get almost 9 days! I couldn't even imagine having to charge both my phone and my watch every night, it sounds terrible.

    It's really apples and oranges here. I choose to go with the pebble because of simplicity and ruggedness. I can take it camping/kayaking and not worry about getting it wet or the battery dying. It gives me notifications, distance tracker for cycling, and ability to control music. If you want something with way more features and more elegant then the Apple Watch is for you if you don't mind charging it every night. On sale now @250USD is actually a very fair price. Might eventually own both.

I like ability to use this as an alarm clock, and it is perfect as a teacher to be able to get notifications in a lesson that may be important and allow to not have to open my phone. I started with the original pebble *kickstarter edition* had it for years loved it. unfortunately pebble went bankrupt and the so did the software support. i went with what i thought was an upgrade and got the apple watch series 5 watch. what i came to realize is that while apple watches have 99% more features then the pebble watch, the pebble watches 1% feature does it 100% better. i now sold my apple watch and going to get my pebble back even with little to no developer backed support i'd be happier with old reliable. btw e paper displays on smart watches are super underrated.

    Had my Apple Watch just at 12 months and the mic stopped working despite being very gentle on the Watch. It is a "smooth" type of luxury experience and works OK with the iPhone, but it's actually harder to use than Pebble. I find the activity tracking fairly motivating, but the short battery life pretty much ruins the experience. Even with it in airplane mode most the day, I can barely get one exercise in before having to charge it at night. Plus, NO sleep tracking built it. Real bummer considering all the fitness hype around the Watch. Pebble Time has a pretty good sleep tracking approach built in now.
    I know it's personal, but of the two watches in that video the Pebble looks much better to be. It's designed like a watch with normal looking lugs for a band. The Apple Watch sort of looks like a tiny ice cream sandwich perched up on the wrist.
    If the Apple Watch had a week battery life, looked better, tracked sleep, didn't lag so bad and worked on other platforms I'd consider it again...assuming the issue with mics going out is ironed out. Major bummer to pay over $300 bucks for a device that breaks in under a year.
    Apple does have far superior customer service, and immensely deeper pockets, so I fully expect the AW to only improve.
    Please get some watch faces though!

      The Pebble is more affordable, has an exponentially better 10 day battery life, allows you to use any watchband you want, and works with both iOS and Android. The Apple Watch is more compatible, built to a higher standard and offers more features and app support. Both devices have their pros and cons and everyone has their own opinion. I didn't say the Apple Watch was better or that the Pebble is crap. I only compared the features and gave my opinion.

      The Apple Watch is more comparable with iOS than Pebble is. The point of this video was to compare with watches on iOS because those are the only 2 options for iPhone users, Apple Watch or Pebble. This video has nothing to do with Android lol

      +Matt Bird Truth is, despite it may sound a bit retro, physical buttons are way more usable for smartwatches than touchscreens themselves. Differently from smartphones, watches are to be used without having to look at the screen, and buttons are the way to go for a faster approach (for example, controlling your music player).
      I dislike the small size of the Pebble screen, and the huge bezel. However, when it comes to usability in a smartwatch, I don't give a sh*t wether it has an HD Screen or a humble 128x128 pixels screen. I want it to do its job, and the Pebble does it nicely. Overmore, the nature of the screen might not be suitable for playing videos or for pretty fancy animations, but it is much more power efficient and can be seen in direct sun light, all things that you expect from a watch.
      Pebble also wins in the battery department by far. Unlike a smartphone, wearing off and on a watch to charge it is a pain in the ass. The Pebble has not a heart rate monitor, but it is a smart device that focuses on certain population and the heart rate monitor therefore is totally overrated, mostly useless for most people. Get a Fitbit or a Garmin if you are into sport tracking to its full potential.
      The Apple Watch is a fascinating gadget, but people who seek efficiency should, at least nowadays, go for a more reasonable device as the Pebble is.
      And no, don't get me wrong, I can afford the Apple Watch, or the Tag Heuer Connected if I wanted. And I'm writing this in my last generation MacBook Air. So I'm not biased by any of those criteria, I'm just practical.

      Kamjam1000 I compared the devices with an iPhone of course because the Apple Watch is only compatible with the iPhone. I wanted to compared the Apple Watch with the Pebble simply because those are the only 2 smartwatch options for iOS. If I were to do an Android comparison, I could put the Pebble up against any Galaxy Gear, Moto 360, LG Urbane etc. Im not really one for saying a devices wins or loses because everyone has their own opinion. For price, battery life and ease of use the Pebble is miles ahead. But for other features, the Apple Watch (or even a Galaxy Gear Device, Urbane, etc) might come out ahead.

    I think the PTS actually looks better than the Apple Watch however, the Pebble is just too restricted on iOS. I currently have a Pebble Time with my iPhone and whilst Android users get full 100% compatibility, us iOS users are limited to about 75% functionality. Android users get text replies but we don't. Bottom line - if you want a watch with FULL 100% compatibility with iOS ( no other wearable has this either) then Apple Watch is THE only thing out there. THATS why I'm switching to an Apple Watch.

    • @jooelewis

      +coolertuep Apple watch has he potential to be a better smart watch experience but the issue really comes down to the complexity of the software. Combine that with the numerous bugs with the watch software, and the battery life (especially battery life) the pebble has the slight edge. iOS users are kinda screwed until apple leans away from the limitations given to pebble, since pebble on android is a fully fleshed out experience. I think it's very difficult to compare Pebble to Apple watch since they are both very different companies with very philosophies. What's really holding Apple back is that they are not good with day 1 products. This product is a huge step back quality wise that we would expect from Apple. It's not a drastic drop but it's still noticeable. Make the watch affordable, and give it a battery life that can at the very least compete with pebble. Pebble succeeds in its ability to simple and effective.

    • @coolertuep
      @coolertuep 8 років тому

      Joe Lewis you never saw or used the apple watch right?
      Battery life is completly okay. I never went unter 40%. I charge every night, but its really no problem. I dont wear my watch in bed anyways and dont care if i just put it on my desk or on the charging "puk". You wont get any battery problems when you just charge everytime you sleep.
      Even if its not possible, 1,5-2 days in heavily - medium use is also easy possible. When you got down to 1%, it will switch to power safe mode (will last 72+ hours longer but just display time). If you enter power resever mode on 10 %, you get 10+ days of battery.
      The software has no bugs though, not a single one.
      Its also not complicated. Its even easie to use as an iPhone.

    • @jooelewis
      @jooelewis 8 років тому +10

      I owned and used both. Ive used Apple watch from launch till about a month ago and I supported Pebble for all of their kick starters and its the primary wearable I use now. The Apple Watch UI is not as intuitive in comparison to their other products. It has a steep learning curve for those who don't know anything about wearables (which is almost every apple user); I'm not the only one who has this opinion. Overall, the interaction from phone to watch can be extremely slow. Another thing, which people are not understanding, is that charging a watch everyday just is not practical. You want to have all the perks of a watch, which are very fundamental things, while having the versatility of a smart device. A day of battery life is just not acceptable in that price range for a wearable. The battery is so poor because theres so much going on with the device within applications and communication via phone and watch. Apple needs to decide what they want this wearable to be: A companion for your smartphone, or a stand alone device that does not need the phone to communicate with it. The technology is not there right now. Pebble understood that and went the route of a companion. Apple needs to decide what they want this watch to be, and just focus on that. Based on everything the watch is right now, they want it to be a stand alone device, which is fine. They just need to improve the battery life and the overall speed of the device and the UI, but again the technology is not there to give you a extremely extended battery life without making sacrifices elsewhere, which may mean making it an actual stand alone device that does not need a smart phone to function (i.e. communication via iCloud or something) which would be a smart route to go. I can see them ditching BT technology all together and building through iCloud, which obviously has its own set of problems.

      +Mo Hamza Guessing you're an apple phone user? That is the point of pebble. They don't strive to be complicated, their aim is simplicity. And, for android users, they have loads of apps. As for your comment about variety, pebble has an entire section on their app devoted to "health and fitness," and under "daily" apps they have apps called maptastic, navigation, xplorer, Nav me, etc. all devoted to navigation. Have fun spending a fortune on a product that is practically a prototype that you will have more problems with than the Pebble.

      @lobsterzworld 8 років тому +2

      +Mo Hamza Look, PT suits Android and AW suits iPhones, plain and simple. It doesn't really matter which watch has the best functionality, what matters is the phone that you have. And I will say that the pebble time steel, which currently runs around $250, feels MUCH nicer than the pebble time or previous models. It has a metal bezel and Gorilla Glass screen, so, personally, I would say it feels much more expensive. I won't disagree that the regular pebble feels cheap.

    I'd say that Pebble is the winner. Not sure I'd have any smart watch, but if I had to to choose, I'd go the Pebble route. No reason to have an expensive item that is supposed to convenience you if you have to charge it every night. Like seriously, wtf is the point of sleep tracking on Apple Watch if its on the night stand charging ...? Having owned and returned the ms band 1 and 2, gear s2, and Moto 360 2, I've realized I don't use them for anything aside from notifications, and that functionality isn't worth the high price and constant charging. The pebble handles the duties of a watch and notification screen better than any other watch, lasts longer, looks great, and is cheaper. Also, good luck using that thing with gloves. Touch screen gloves or not, its wouldn't be convenient. Buttons ftw.

    • @keptkozy
      @keptkozy 8 років тому

      Define works. If its not on my wrist, its not doing its job as a watch and I'd have to pick it up just like my phone. For the apple watch to charge it has to be off your person. Does it function still? Yes. Is it useful while off your body? Absolutely not. It would just be more convenient during that charging period to use my phone. Every minute its off your wrist to charge is a strike against it, and looking at how often its on a charger; well that's a lot of strikes bud. Your argument is invalid.

    • @29kalel
      @29kalel 8 років тому

      clearly by your statement you donot own an apple watch so you are blowing smoke. my watch is not constantly charging I can use 40% of the battery in 16hrs so it is on my arm from the time I am up til bed time and I could go the next day before charging it. stop going off of what other people say and actually use one. and you say define works: I send texts graphics even make phone calls, check emails, check heart rate and activity monitor runs all day long on it and I still get great battery life come home go to the gym and control my playlist while I work out and still get the battery life apple states. and with any wearable if it is not on your wrist what job is it doing? NOTHING MORE THAN JUST TELLING THE TIME

    • @keptkozy
      @keptkozy 8 років тому

      Everything on that list you just mentioned I can do on my pebble. The difference? I might have to charge my steel today. I charged it last Tuesday. Also, I should buy it and try it for myself instead of listening to my 2 friends who had them and returned them for battery life, and my 1 coworker who has mentioned the same thing and says some days he just doesn't ware it because he forgot to charge it that night? Why spend the money? Seriously man, it sounds like you paid a lot of money for a prototype and just really want to defend your purchase. I've had a lot of wearable devices and can honestly say for the first time, I have no complaints. The only thing the apple watch does that mine doesn't is.... drawing little hearts? Umm sending a heartbeat? Psshhhh man I'm reaching here. Oh it does have a sapphire face, I'll say kudos on that. That's about it. I use a smart watch to call Uber, check in on Swarm, get and respond to notifications, control music, send SMS, track sleep, set alarms, check weather, check calendar, and keep scores on ESPN. This fulfills all of that while getting up to 10 days of battery and having flawless sunlight readability.

    • @29kalel

      not defending my purchase I know how to use it to conserve battery power. this device works you have to set it up properly. You should have used the pebble with an Android device. Saying that Pebble doesn't answer notifications is pretty unfair.
    You forgot to mention that the Pebble Time has a 10 days battery, it is waterproof, it has its own SDK for apps creation, the band of steel...
    I'd say that you are not objective at all.
