I’m very surprised how well this was made, also love how surprising dark it was for such a vibrant comic. Starscream is a menace!
Reminds me of the first Season of Transformers Prime, where Starscream was the leader of the Decepticons till Megatron came back towards the end
All my Transformers knowledge comes from the 80’s cartoon. The friendship between Jetfire and Starscream was established in the cartoon.
Same here. Especially the episode, "Fire in the sky" where they were close colleagues and fellow scientists before the Great War
I found it interesting that Hasbro wanted DWJ to make new designs but he insisted on doing G1 for the run. Glad to see the book is selling out stores and online, second print is already confirmed.
I’m indifferent but it works for me G1 designs are timeless after all. (for anyone interested DWJ is doing a director commentary on this first issue tonight at 10 EST on his youtube channel)
Fun fact, Spike has a brother in the G1 comics named Buster. He also becomes a Headmaster (a process that allows organics to merge with Transformers as their heads) in the series and is partnered with Fortress Maximus

Man!, DWJ art is so "comic booky" but in all the right ways. Its like the energy just pops out from the page.

I'm still making my way through IDW but it is peak TF content so far.

It does leave the question of where Megatron in all this and if what people speculation is to believe the cover of Cobra Commander gun dies look eerily similar to Megatron Gun mode
That will be answered future stories set in this universe way down the line

I really want to see DWJ's take on Lugnut, the character works well with the way he draws action scenes. Though it might take a long time before the non G1 characters appear

Optimus Prime did a ripcord lariat and a German suplex. This is the greatest Transformers comic

Thanks Joel! It reminded me a lot of the first ten or so issues of the original marvel transformers comic, but with modern storytelling and absolutely KILLER art. It also helps that Starscream is my favorite bot so I always love seeing him actually take command of the decepticons

As someone born in 2009 I am actually so sad I never heard of this until now cause unlike most people born in 2009 I grew up with the G1 cartoon of Transformers watching it with my dad I actually have the G1 movie on DvD and I used to watch it nonstop and to now see that someone is pushing the G1 designs but with a modern updated story that actually works just warms my heart
I really loved the Hasbro universe comics so I'm excited for another shared comic universe that has G.I. Joe and transformers
Your wrestling commentary makes me want to check it out.

My only issue is the hair color change with for spike and carly. That should tells you most of the quality of the book in my eyes. As long as it doesn't get senselessly complicated with cybertronian society like last time, it'll be fine.

I grew up with the beast era, "unircron trilogy", the Bay films, and animated so i have 0 attachments to G1. There just seems to be a lot enthusiasm from the people working in these books that makes me really wanna check them out, even the GI Joe stuff has me curious.
Beast Wars has a (subjectively) great 3 volume comic run. I found it surprisingly hilarious while waiting for this. A good retelling of season 1 with a few extra characters

I feel odd about this. It's like a retread of the 80s Marvel Comics Run but, with added shock value. I'm not nostalgic enough for G1 to care about a grittier take on Transformers. I hope other people like it.
It's not gonna follow the original g1 at all, he didn't go for shock value either. Bumblebees death was literally done because hasbro and dwj didn't want bumblebee in the spotlight and instead, wanted cliffjumper. I don't have an attachment to g1, My first transformers was prime but i still really enjoyed the comic.

I'll give this one a pass. IDW went off the deep end with their bizarre fixation on humanising giant alien robots. But at least they didn't re-tread old ground. Next year is the 40th anniversary of G1. There's really no need to go back to it. The franchise surpassed it years ago.
