I took the inaugural flight from Newark to Gothenburg on the same plane's return leg, it was a surreal experience to see Gothenburg for the first time and I'm really glad you have this route now.
I live in Dusseldorf, Germany! And this is the same situation for me… I don’t have family in the US but we go there often! We were soo happy that Delta Airlines continued the nonstop flights to Atlanta last week after not doing so for 3 years! I literally had tears in my eyes ❤
This is incredible and how far you've gone this seems like a present to you and I hope you enjoy it and I hope you will continue making these great honest reviews.
As a half Japanese and Swedish with my fatter's family based in Gothenburg, I know the significance! Though my parents aren't separated, we do go to Gothenburg every summer and every time we all wished that there was a direct flight from Tokyo to Gothenburg. The "pain" of always transiting in Copenhagen (even though one of my fav airport) is not the same as flying direct somewhere like you said! One day maybe we will see a Tokyo - Gothenburg flight, but I do not have my hopes up as we just finally got a Stockholm - Tokyo flight! Happy for you Dan, keep up the good work and all the best!
@@succindallroy1I know ANA was supposed to open a ARN - HND direct flight but unfortunately it got postponed (hopes high it will commence soon!). But I don’t think there is any airline flying direct atm?
Wow! It’s heartening to hear you talk about how the newly inaugurated direct flight from Gothenburg to NYC reminds you of your early flying days as a teenager and the emotional impact it has left. I hope the president of SAS has taken note of the praiseworthy aspects of the flight and plane as well as well as the deficiencies. Stay well
Great video documenting the experience. Having gone back and forth between Gothenburg and Phoenix regularly throughout my childhood, this was a big day in my life. I can only imagine how important it it was for you. I can see myself at 4:21!
Super chuffed for you Daniel! Glad to see your family bond is still so strong despite a whole ocean separating them! I haven’t had the opportunity to fly a narrowbody long haul, but it can’t be that bad. Sure, the available space is noticeably less than a dual-aisle plane, but the way people talk about it, it’s like the widebody is a palace in comparison to a modern narrowbody.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!!! You are by far my favorite aviation youtuber. I love how authentic your videos are - that you always tell the truth, and they have helped me decide what to book. As an avgeek i love watching your videos when the come out. Keep doing what you’re doing!
When I was flying Vietnam Airlines the food came out and I was sitting in the last row in business class. It took 4 hours just to dish out the main course, let alone get everything together. It wasn’t a narrow body either it was an A350! I found that madness, and the A321 seems like a small plane so slow service but it still seemed amazing
Gothenburg's airport reminds me a lot of the pleasant surprise we had when we chose to fly back to US in December directly from Bergen, Norway, rather than from Oslo. Bergen's Flesland Airport had some lovely shops and eateries, a pretty good-sized duty free, and was clean, efficient and crowd-free.
at 10:18 i can tell thats the intrepid museum that i visited recently witch was a long flight infact i was in newyork when you landed!. but also i can see how painful this can be for you
I flew this exact plane, SE-DMO, from CPH-BOS on Thursday! In seat 2A. I was very impressed with SAS - this was my first flight with them since flying to Oslo in business class in 1999.
It was great meeting you at GOT and I noticed that I made a little appearance in your video 😂 Great review and thanks for being so open and candid about how much this nonstop flight means to you! I hope it will be a success for both SAS and GOT and that it will be a daily flight in the future! ✈️💙🇺🇸
As a Kazakh living in the US, I get you. I fly for 24 hours twice a year just to see my home country and then back, I wish we had a nonstop service to the US
I very much know your feel. When I grew up we lived in a city that did have international flights, just not to my dads country - or at least on a regular. I regularly connected via Vienna, Zurich, Munich etc just to get to visit my dad. Go on Dan! Thank you for all your wonderful content :)
Only just seeing this particular segment, but enjoy for a long time Nonstop Dan’s presentation. This one is tremendous in both its content and authenticity. I hope by now he’s a regular on this flight… but he also is many places in the world most of the time. So sweet also that Oscar’s mom and Oscar were with him on the trip.
You're probably not going to get to read this, but you're such an amazing person. After such a hard childhood you still ended up a wonderful human being. You helped me get over my fear of flying by loving planes and luxury. I also lived a childhood of separated parents. Thanks Dan. I'm about to board Polaris Tokyo -> Newark. 777-200.
I agree about traveling between the two vastly different worlds. I still find it hard to believe that I can sit down in an airplane seat, and then, eight hours later, be on the opposite side of the ocean! What would the Vikings and Christopher Columbus say about that? We fly home to Newark Airport via the SAS Airbus A330 which is still a great airplane despite being older. Honestly, I like the widebodies. However, it would be fun to try the A321 transatlantic. I’m guessing that was Newark you landed at. That is my favorite New York City airport.
@NonstopDan I couldn't believe you posted this video on the SAME DAY my wife is (currently) on this exact flight going from Newark to Göteborg. I sent this video to her as she was waiting for her 2nd flight from LAX to EWR. As I type this she is on the flight likely south of Greenland on her way.
Dan, regarding content, does SAS show the Millennium series such as "The girl with the dragon tattoo" or the crime show "Annika Bengtzon"? Those are my favorite Swedish movies and shows. If those were available, all would be forgiven instantly.
Hobart resident here. Whilst there are direct flights to most Australian capital cities, the majority of flying is via Melbourne or Sydney. This can add up to half a day of travel time. It's so much nicer to have direct flights. Presently there is one international service to Auckland NZ, but it's not daily.
The minute I saw the route launch announcement I thought of you - even without knowing all the story behind it I knew you'd be super glad about this one.
Happy Birthday Dan!! I could be wrong, but, since this flight is an inaugural flight, it is possible that the meal service could be longer than usual, and it probably didn’t help since the galley is smaller.
Awesome video! I took the EWR-GOT flight the day before you uploaded this! Also, the blonde FA on the left side of the group photo at 2:37 worked my flight and was amazing.
Happy birthday!!!! I can't tell you how much I related to your secondary city comments. A few years after my parents divorced we moved to Dallas, TX and my dad lived in Erie, PA. Not as severe as your distance but I would've been so nice to have a direct. Keep it up!!!
I think a lot of it is symbolic when you've had two homes on different continents for a large part of your life and traveled between them 4 times a year. That said flying is exhausting enough and a single 8h flight is A LOT better than 8h + the connecting flight itself + the 2-3 hour connection...
Dan: please don't say you're still connecting to airplane wifi completely exposed Me: I have the ultimate protection against unsafe airplane wifi, not affording it
DAN I wish you would have shown us the premium economy on the A321 as its unique. SAS did a great job outfitting their A321 since most have only J and Y classes.
Very special review! I’ve seen many SAS planes at Newark, but always to Stockholm/Copenhagen/Oslo. My parents divorced as well, but I was already in college and I couldn’t have cared less. They both remarried happily. I got divorced too, but my children were young, and my ex went to jail - I could write a book about it! I enjoy seeing you and Oskar, although I thought he was South American, not Swedish! Have you heard of the late great opera singer, Birgit Nilsson? I think she was from your part of Sweden!
I totally understand the feeling. I live in a second city, too. Cebu. Although we always had long-haul flights (LAX, Middle East), it’s not as many as Manila has. And we always needed to connect elsewhere. So any announcement of a new destination from my hometown brings joy. And I make sure to support it by flying the route when I have the chance.
Happy birthday Dan. BTW, even though I now live in the US, I was born in Stockholm. We fly back to Sweden via SAS every year and I have dual citizenship.
🎉🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!! Have the best day, and thank you for your honest, enjoyable flight reviews that we know you spend so much time on! I’ve been subscribed for a long time and I always watch your videos! 🎉🎉
The only thing more Swedish would be to have Roxette perform in the lobby! Sadly, I don't know if that would be possible, Marie passed away 3 years ago. It hurt more than I thought because Roxette was what I mostly listened to through my years in university. Rest in peace...
PS: I would love to visit Stockholm but Gothenburg feels a bit closer to me because in university, most of the Swedish students came from there. The rest were from Malmo. I do find it somewhat odd that none were from Stockholm.
Hey Dan, big fan! I must say though as a New Jerseyan, and I know in Europe they love to do this, but stop referring to Newark as New York! I understand Newark is pretty much the 3rd New York airport, but Newark is its own city. Great video otherwise, my parents are divorced too, and I know it changes the course of your life. Narrowbodies across the Atlantic are here to stay, I guess. My friend is a 757 and 767 First Officer for United(based out of Newark), and he mostly flies international on the 767 and domestic on the 757, but some of his 757 flights are to Europe too.
Grattis på födelsedagen Dan, hoppas du hade en riktigt bra dag fylld med godsaker :) Hör av dig ifall du är i Toronto någon gång i framtiden…skulle vara kul och träffas! :D
What a classic, layover in Landvetter, grab some food at Max and go to the crew hotel near the terminal. Passengers were always very nice when flying out from there!

Loved watching this Dan and lovely hearing your story and why the flight is so significant. I also visited GOT last month and it was such a lovely city! Safe travels you guys!❤️
One more comment, I think narrowbody transatlantic flights are the wave to the future. I think the low cost and easy maintenance should be the wave of the future! But, the comfort is a little reduced but it isn't really that bad. I flew on a transatlantic flight from aer lingus on the narrowbody and it wasn't really that bad, so hopefully they can add more comfort for the future.
Slow catering doesn't really bother me all that much on a daytime flight. But on the return if it takes that long, that's problematic, particularly if you don't get a stop at a lounge or somewhere else to grab a bite before departure.
I knew you were half Swede/American but it didn't occur to me your parents were divorced this whole time. My parents divorced when my sister and I were young kids and we would have to fly back and forth 2000 miles across the US to see our dad. We would only get to see him during Christmas and summer break and heading back home always lead to tears at the airport. I feel you man. However, those years growing up, learning the ins and outs of flying, I grew up to love aviation. Also Happy birthday Dan!
I remember when I first moved to USA from Australia, the flight route took about 38 hours door to door. San Francisco to LAX, LAX to Honolulu, Honolulu to Auckland NZ, Auckland to Melbourne, it was brutal. Sometimes an unscheduled stop in Nadi Fiji if Auckland was fogged in, they would pick up fuel from Nadi. On those old United 747, with the communal TV's in the isle, with golf programs.. Ugh. United only recently did SFO to MEL non stop couple of days a week.
I understand you Dan. I am half Portuguese and half Finnish myself and they are two different worlds, I used to travel to Finland every summer and every Christmas with my parents to visit my grandmother in a city called Turku where she used to lived. I grew up in Portugal and lived there my whole life but in 2014 when I was 12 years old we had to move to Finland and it was really difficult for someone who lived in a very warm country to move to a different country which is super cold and getting used to the Finnish culture even though my dad is Finnish, we always spoke English together since I was little. Now I am 22 years old and I speak Finnish fluently and I am used to the country since I have been living here for almost 10 years now, but I still dream about moving back to Portugal someday and I was able to visit Portugal last summer after 5 years and it was such an amazing trip but I felt a bit depressed when I came back to Finland since Portugal and Finland are two completely different worlds. But I am so blessed to be half Portuguese and half Finnish and being able to speak both languages fluently. Great video! Mahtavaa video! Ótimo video! 😊😊👍👍😸😸
Happy Birthday, Dan!🎉🎉 Looks like you had a pretty incredible flight. I'm so happy for you! Oskar's mom is so cute. Did she have lots of fun flying business class? I understand how you feel about connecting flights from your home airport. It's the same way at my local airport. Even when I go to a bigger airport, like Syracuse(yes, I live in NY, but in Central Upstate, 5 hrs. W of the City) I still can't get a nonstop flight, unless I happen to be flying to ATL. Happy Birthday again, Dan, and here's to many more years of the Nonstop Dan Channel! Love to Oskar, too!
Happy birthday, Dan!!!🎉 Hope you have a good one! If you think Gotheberg is isolated, try Montevideo, Uruguay.... it's far far far away from everywhere!!! 😅
I visited new york for the first time in my life. It was also the first ever flight I had taken. It was onboard a delta flight from Amsterdam. Visited the US for love and spend a few days in NYC before going on. I LOVE New York. It's so diverse, you see so many different people and even though the entire new York metropolitan area houses almost as many people as there are in the entirety of The Netherlands it's still really beautiful as well! Does this flight still operate from your home town to New York? If so I really hope you'll be able to take it often so you can maybe see your dad if you both still have good contact.
Great video. My son and I live in Gothenburg for many years, and his mom in California. He made the flight 2-3 times a year. Your story sounds familiar. So cool SAS has SE US mon stop now. Still waiting for GOT - > SFO nonstop 😁 Great video
Happy Birthday, Dan! What a lovely gift you gave yourself! Better late than never! I am enjoying this review. Your meal sounds great, even the delay seemed okay. I am so glad you did this.
I live in Glasgow, and I guess the difference between Gothenburg and Glasgow is that Glasgow is a much more *connected* airport. I can take flights with Emirates, Air Transat, and TUI. It's also the largest city in Scotland, although Edinburgh seems to have an insane amount of long-haul flights for it's size. I'm still waiting for the day I actually do fly long-haul out of either Glasgow or Edinburgh though.

Finally, you truly are Nonstop Dan.
I flew the same seating configuration on TAP Portugal‘s A321lr between Frankfurt and Lisbon which was my best European business class flight ever.
Loved watching this Dan and lovely hearing your story and why the flight is so significant. I also visited GOT last month and it was such a lovely city! Safe travels you guys!❤️
HAPPY BIRTHDAAAAY DAAAAAN!!!!
I guess with the A321LR they can operate a profitable flight from there to NYC
HOPE YOU HAD A FANTASTIC BIRTHDAY DAN😂.
That grated metal on the air intake looks beutiful
*Ahhhh yes, the long awaited flight to/from Gothenburg!*
Happy Birthday "Handsome Dan"🎉😊🍰.
Happy Birthday, Dan 💐🎂🍾 wishing you all the best.
I'm so stoked for you, Dan (and Oskar and his Mom).
SAS is returning to Bangkok too! Thank you for the nice & informative video
Those vegan meals look absolutely fire 😍
Great video.
My son and I live in Gothenburg for many years, and his mom in California. He made the flight 2-3 times a year.
Your story sounds familiar.
So cool SAS has SE US mon stop now.
Still waiting for GOT - > SFO nonstop 😁
Great video
Happy b-day Dan!❤🎉
This video was so sweet. I loved it
Happy Birthday, Dan!
