Horizontal hive Inspection

- This is an inspection of a horizontal hive. This hive was split on 4/17 and this inspection is to look for a laying queen. We looked last week and didn't see eggs or a queen. We put a frame of eggs and larva in so if they were queenless they could make a queen. No queen cells were started, but still couldn't find a laying queen or eggs/larva. Another frame of eggs larva was placed in the hive and we'll check again in a week.
Very interested in your horizontal hive design. I really liked the brood frames in the centre rather than at one end like other vid examples I've seen. Food for thought! Much appreciated
Blinded by the light.
thank you for the video!
Leo Sharashkin is the fellow you mentioned. His web site is horizontalhive.com
Hello!!!Like from the Crimea!!!Please tell me how many frames this hive is?Thanks
I think it is a 30 or 40, it's a friend's hive.
seems like these long hives wouldnt be good in the winter as heat rises and thats why they put honey obove them to heat it in the winter so they can feed
I'm looking at building a hive like that. How are you managing ventilation in that type of hive?
HELLO, i am in FRANCE, can you give me the dimensions of this hive, thanks you
How is the horizontal hive doing?
How does that do in the winter and where do they store the honey you harvest?
It was a hive of a friend, I know it overwintered fine at least twice.
Alderaan Acres thanks for the quick reply. Is the honey you harvest supposed to be on the two ends? How many frames do the bees put honey on vs how many do you take?
James Roberts that depends on where you are at and what kind of winters you have. I generally take what I can in June and they get the rest. I reevaluate early September, feed if needed and always try to give them a sugar cake.
Top Bar is the only way I will be able to keep bees: 3 herniations in my lumbar and 3 compressions in my neck.....could not work a normal langstroth to save my life....just too heavy!
You might consider a Layens Hive. Less maintenance and you only lift the frames once the hive is set up. No lugging those heavy boxes! Check out horizontalhives.com for more info and plans to make the hive. Pretty easy build if you are a woodworker! Peace
