  • Finally spent some time and made a video tutorial showing how to setup and use your Roland SPD-SX as a midi controller for Ableton Live. It's a little bit complicated to get started but this tutorial will give you all the steps you need to take to make it work in Ableton. I've shown everything you need to do besides plugging in the usb cable.
There is a chance you will need to install a driver from Roland to make sure you're up to date for your system. It's very easy to do that though so don't stress it!
I approach this entire video from the worship drummer perspective and trying to set everything up for playing at church. This will work for anyone though so don't be afraid to mess around with it and try it out for whatever your needs are. Also to note, I got the original midi number idea from what Aaron Johnson of River Valley Worship does on the Worship Drummer channel. Really great info from Aaron and he presents all of this a bit better than I do but his video uses the SPD-SX as a midi-mapped controller for Ableton rather than just to control drum racks so the process is a bit different here. I also wanted to show how I use this method to change sounds on the fly and route specific sounds where I need them to go for FOH.
I also made a short video just to show the settings on the Roland SPD-SX, check it out at • SPD-SX Midi Controller...
Please feel free to leave a comment or input on this video. I would love to know what you think and if this method works for you or if you have a different way of setting this up. Also let me know what you would like to see more of in the future please! We want this channel to be a resource for worship drummers and anyone sitting behind the kit.
